Event Browser: missing in and out points

Saw this question before, but I do not think the corect answer was given.
I select a file in the event browser. Choose an in and out point and add it to my project.
I then select this clip in my project and hit Shift+F. The result is the Event Browser (in Clips List view) showed the entire clip from which my selection was taken,  but does not show the in and out points of my selected clip.
The answer I saw posted said the Event Browser needs to be in Filmstrip View  to see the selected range. While this may be true, I am not sure that is the whole story.
I have been using the video training by Ripple Training and their video clearly shows the in and out point (displayed by a gray box) with list view.  This is how I dscoverd this issue.  I noticed that I could not do what the training video was showing me.

That did the trick. Thanks.

  • Fcp x 10.0.9 I can't select in and out points while importing media, and scrubber won't work in event browser.

I have two problems, and I have already un installed and reinstalled FCP X, and still have the issues.
    1) In the import media window I can no longer select my in and out points to import. Pressing  the "I" and "O" keys, I just get the audible error beep.
    2) in the event browser I can select the in and out points, but it will no longer scrub through the clip with the cursor.
I do have OSX Mavericks installed, but the issue was prior to the install.

Tom, perhaps I used the wrong terminology, skimming not scrubbing. In the event browser on the thumbnails of my clips, I recall being able to skim to a point and then select the in and out points. It apparently is solved. I guess the reinstall fixed it. Well like taking your car to a mechanic its not making the clicking sound now.
As far as the import. I think  by your response you solved the problem. I can select the in and out point when I import from a camera or my iphone, but I did not realize you could not select the in and out points from a video file already on my hard drive.
I appreciate your responce, and have a great day.

  • Cant set in and out point on browser in fullscreen mode

    Hi
I would like to make a 3 point edit using the brownser on fullscreen mode on FCPX.
    Someone now how?

    Thx for the answer.
    No, without Dual monitor.
I selected all my clips and transform they on a Compound Clip on the Browser.
Then I toggle to Fullscreen mode, because I believe that I could just play my clips and create In and Out points and insert they in the timeline on the fly.
Even if the clip is a standalone clip I cant make in and outs while on fullscreen mode, actually any key I press I hear the ''thu'' sound.

  • Video stutters when setting range in and out points within browser

While playing back video and using the "I" and "O" keys to set range in and out points, the video stutters every time I press either key.
Footage is Apple ProRes 422 1080p23.98 and 720p59.94 (problem is more noticeable with 59.94 footage). Playback quality is set to "Better Performance"
    FCPX 10.1.3
    OSX 10.9.5
    Mac Pro (Late 2013)
    3 GHz 8-Core
    32GB RAM
    Dual AMD FirePro D700
Project stored on 7200rpm eSata drive via GbE

Yes that's exactly right. As I'm going through selecting ranges to mark with a keyword tag, the video pauses for a split second (and skips a few frames) every time I use the "I" or "O" keys. As I tend to tag multiple sections within each clip I like to mark my ranges and tag them on the fly while the clip is still playing.

  • Can clips retain last playhead position and in and out points like v7?

Is there a setting that will enable the clips to retain the last playhead position and in and out points so that I don't have to find the place I left off at every time I go to that Clip? Basically how FCP 7 worked.
    Vince

This is another area that's lacking in this great application, I'm afraid - but there are ways to keep the 'in and out' points at least.
When you have marked them you simply press 'F' to mark your selection as a favourite. Then if you click the green bar that appears, your selection will immediately be highlighted.
Alternatively, add keywords to your selection - then when you click the keyword collection in the event browser, the clips will be displayed, already trimmed.
A third way is to trim away the unwnated footage in your clip. Lets say you have a long clip and you want to make multiple clips from it. You don't want the first three seconds of the clip and you also don't want the last one second . . . (follow this carefully - it works)!
Move the playhead to your IN point and press the 'O' key (yes the 'O' key).
Now press the backspace key and your clip is trimmed to the 'in' point. Now scroll to the out point and press the 'I' key (that's right). Move the playhead to the 'in' point of your next clip and press 'O'.
Press Backspace and your clip stands on its own for all time.
(You can even mark one frame 'Out' and the very next frame 'In' and this will work - you don't lose any frames).
Sorry I can't help you with retaining the playhead position.

  • Removing between and in and out point in the timeline

I don't usually post on forums but this has got me quite perplexed:
How do you remove a chunk of media between and in and out point in the FCPX timeline?
It's can't be as hard as it seems to do this task that you have to do all the time. I have a 2 hour 3 camera shoot and I want to remove quite a few 2, 3 minute chucks all through the show. I can't find any way to easily remove these chunks. I know there's no real in and out point in the FCPX timeline anymore but there HAS to be some way to easily remove all the video and audio between two points !!!
I feel really dumb! The answer can't be to make a compound clip as that sure is a pain just to remove something from the timeline. And to blade each individual track means I have to blade at least 8 or 12 things just to remove it!
I have to be missing something. Thanks for any input.

    Thanks Tom.
I'll have between 3 and 6 layers at any point. I've tried command B but the problem with that is it only puts a cut on the primary storyline. It will cut more than that if I select all the layers. By doing that it's like a 5 or 6 step process to delete chunks of media in the timeline. I can't believe there isn't an easier way than that.
But what makes it worse as I have a long piece of audio only media that  is for the whole show. Its a connected clip to the primary storyline. when making edits with command B and then deleting what is between the edits this main audio gets deleted from the edit forward. IT's like this audio becomes a connected clip right after the edit when command B is made. it looks connected to the next clip after the command B but it deletes when I delete the chunk between the command B.
This is so silly that I can't easily delete media from the timeline in this way. It's such a simple thing!

  • In and out point feature not working

I am a teacher at a tech school and I teach Premiere Pro CS5.5  I teach my students how to use the in and out points in the source clip monitor and then to select the button to insert or overwrite that section to the time line.  I also teach them how to use the in and out point in the timeline monitor and then to select the button to lift or extract that section from the time line.  For some reason this works for most of the students, but not for all.  I actually had it happen to my project during a demonstration.  Sometimes the action that you wanted on the timeline will not happen.  The playhead may slide over like it worked, but the clip is not there or the extraction never happened.  I check all the other video tracks to try to see if it is on another track, but it is not.  The fact that it works for some students and not others, makes me think that maybe it has to do with the type of video clip they are working with (similar to the mono/stereo/5.1 differences with audio clips).  I have to be missing something.  Help!

You didn't say Mac or Windows, but my experience on Mac is that some features of Pr 5.5.2 just stop working, and can only be brought back by an app relaunch, a reboot, or by trashing the preferences (Hold option down while launching from the Dock.).
But... some of what you describe could also be caused by not selecting the track selectors in the Timeline panel properly.

  • Video after In and Out points Changed

After opening up a video in the Viewer and setting In and Out points, and dragging it back to the Browser afterwards:
    1. I tried changing the name of the clip that I dragged back to the Browser, though it changed the names of the other clips in the Browser to the same name. Why?
    2. How come when you double-click on the new clip and it shows in the Viewer, it shows the In and Out points as well as the video from the original segment around it. Is this the way it is supposed to be? I thought it was supposed to just display the segment of video starting with the In point and ending with the End point.

    1. do some reading in the manual. Might try making the clip independent.
    2. Yes. I know it may seem weird, but it has some really powerful uses. Double click on a clip in the timeline, it loads in the viewer. You can then change your in and out points in the viewer and they will be reflected in the sequence. (with some limitations). If you want to "isolate" the material between an in and an out, check out "make subclip."
This is very basic fcp stuff. Skim the manuals, explore the menus, you'll figure this stuff out pretty quickly.

  • Can I control the in and out point of a layer with a keyframe?

Hi all, I'm working in a sort of template for a series of mograph videos. Some sort of motion typography work.
The animation is always the same but the only thing that changes is the length of the video (for legibility purposes).
I was wondering if I can control the in and out points of a layer with the keyframes from another layer.
Lets say Layer's A keyframe from slider 1 position in time is the out point (plus/minus an offset would be also great) of layer B.
I've been playing with expressions on a regular basis but I don't really know where and how to write an expression like that or if it's possible.
    Thanks in advance

This should probably be moved to the expression forum then.
I'm not sure I understood the details of your project but here's a basis: you can do that with an expression in the layer's time remapping property. So if you want a layer to start playing at the second keyframe on another layer, you can try something like (writing in my browser, watch for mistakes):
//   The "number" of the keyframe (first, second, third, etc)
    var index = 2;
//   The layer with the keyframes
    var l = {pick-whip the layer with keyframes here};
//   Just a safety, check the layer has at least enough keyframes
    if (l.numKeys >= index)
//   If yes, the new time is the difference between the keyframe's time and the current time
        max(0, l.key(index).time-time);
    else
         //   Doesn't matter, let's return 0
        0;

  • Batch Capture Randomly Changes In and Out Points

I'm editing a documentary on Final Cut Pro 5.0.
Using a SONY DSR-11 firewire deck.
I logged sets of clips and then batch captured them. I DIDN'T select add handles in the batch capture tool. Some clips, as they're captured, change their in and out points. Sometimes by two frames early, sometimes by two frames late, and sometimes not at all. Several clips even stopped captured with an out point twenty seconds earlier than what I'd logged. The result is that I have clips with media start and media end points that are not in what I wanted. There seems to be no rhyme or reason whatsoever to this.
    Any ideas what's going on?
    Many Thanks if you do!

Check to see if your tapes have NDF time code.
If you play a tape with NDF TC using Log & Capture, the current time display will defaut to DF until the tape palys forward long enough for the current time field to update. It is posible to log NDF tapes as DF, in which case the timecode values can be incorrectly re-converted if recapturing.
Also, If you initiate a batch capture from the browser, FCP will default to DF, and not be able to update the TC format to NDF duriing the batch. The workaround here has been to cue up NDF tapes with L&C, and start the batch capture while L&C is still open and showing NDF TC.
However, upon upgrading to FCP5 last year, I found that even observing all these precautions and steps, FCP would still shorten the out point of my captured clips on NDF tapes. I was capturing a feature film that came from the UK, and so the starting time on the master was 10 hours instead of 1 hour. When the DF/NDF error occurred and shortened the out point of my 2-hour clip, it did it by several minutes instead of several seconds, because of the starting TC on the tape. In that case, I wound up adding several minutes to my out point and recapturing the end over again.
I haven't experienced this issue lately, but it comes up every now and then.

  • No mark in and out points at batch capturing

I have created logged clips to my browser window but, noticed that the IN and OUT points say NOT SET.
    Is this normal?
As I create the logged clips for batch capture shouldnt I see the IN and OUT times?

That's normal. When you set In and Out in the Log & Capture window, those points become Media Start and Media End in the Browser. And In and Out are left as Not Set.
The rationale is that once you've captured, you'll review your clips and place In and Out points more precisely. In case you do want to stick with Media Start and Media End as your In and Out, simply load the clip into the viewer and press X on your keyboard - that will set your In and Out (at Media Start & End) for your clip.
Now - you know there had to be one caveat - the only time this is not the case is when you check the box to Add Handles in the Batch Capture dialog. In that case, when FCP captures the clips, it extends the Media Start and Media End by the handle amount and uses the In and Out that you specified during logging as the In & Out for that clip in the Browser.

  • Are in and out points reliable in FCPX?

On a few clips, I have selected the in and out point, and when looking at the selected clip in the keyword collection, see that the last frame is actually one frame into the next scene in the original clip.
This behaviour also appears when skimming footage and sometimes when adding to the project and exporting.
When I select an out point, should I in fact select the previous frame to the one I actually want to be the out point?
Never had this in FCP7 - maybe I am missing something!

I have tried to demonstrate this: http://youtu.be/3uoUeqZh_og
In this demo, the output file and project are ok, but I have had situations where the extra frame is in the output file also. Unfortunately I can't re-produce that just now, but will let you know if I can.

  • Getting rid of in and out points

To slo mo a bunch of clips at one time, I am putting the clips in the timeline, using paste attributes and then transferring them back to the browser to edit into my music video. After completing that step, they already have an in and out point. The in point in the beginning of the clip and the out point at the end of the clip. That means to do a cross dissolve, I have to delete the in and out points. I want to use paste attributes, but I hope I can transfer them back into my browser without the in and out points. Is that possible? Thanks for the help.

Pressing the Option and X keys together will remove In an Out points.
Option is marked "alt" on some keyboards.

  • In and out points

Well I got the new iLife yesterday and I really am not "too depressed" with the new interface an controls. Once I figured out that by holding down the SHIFT KEY while using the mouse helps you with adjusting your in and out points.
Now here is my gripe! Why can't we do like QuickTime, Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Pro, etc and *use the 'I' and 'O' keys to set in and out points* sheesh!!!

    Hi -
In your browser, select all the clips you want to remove the in and out points on, so that they (and only they) are highlighted.
Mouse over to the In Column, and Control-Click on a highlighted in-point from one of any of the highlighted clips. From the drop down menu, choose Clear In. That should clear all your in points on all your highlighted clips.
Now mouse to the Out Column, and do the same, this time choosing Clear Out.
You should be good to go.
    Hope this helps.

  • Cannot delete clips in timeline using in and out points

Can't delete or trim clips clips in the timeline when I use the in and out points. Can't figure out this flaw. Its as if final cut does not recognize the ine in and out points. I 've been using the razor to make edits, but when a come across a flash frames and need in and out points to delete the flashframe, I'm in trouble.
    Thanks

    Hi -
    You are missing a step.
Set the in and out points on the section you want to delete:
Then type Option-A to select the area within the In and Out Point:
Then press the small delete key or Shift+ Regular Delete Key and it will delete the section you've designated with an In and Out and pull up the rest of the edit:
