Event-driven data logging

I want to save the data from the DAQ - Card just in case a pre-defined event (measured Value out of tolerance) occured. In that case, I want to have a File with Data 1 min before the event und 1 Minute after the event.
I tried to find examples, but I coud not find anything.
Thanks for your help
Marcel Jahn

Hi Marcel:
What you need to do is collect your data in a recirculating buffer at least two minutes long...and then have it DUMP everything UNLESS there's an interesting event. Obviously, there's no way to know ahead of time when something interesting is going to happen, so this is the standard way of performing this function. Look at the Buffered Data acquisition examples. You will have to modify them to the length of buffering you need.
Hope this helps a bit.

  • Using event risen to log data into citadel

    Hi all,
I have an HMI application in LV & DS 8 reads My OPC items, and log data, alarms and events into citadel. Knowing Citadel is event-driven, I want to use this event to distinguish a change in database and update my Historical Alarm & Even List in the HMI front panel instead of ever polling the database.
    I really appreciate any help.

Can you post more information on what you are doing? I haven't done much with Citadel but I thought that it is aimed at logging data as it changes, i.e. all of the data logged in there will be different else it wouldn't have been logged in the first place?!
There are block diagram functions that allow you to read the traces back and this is all you need. Check out the examples that come with the DSC module.
Let me know if I can help you further.

  • Periodic reading data with event driven programming

    Hi all
I want to read data from a device periodically, for example every 2 seconds.
but I want to use event driven programming in order to response user events.
now I don't know how to do this......!!
maybe I should use timed loop or timed sequence structure
if I use this structures, should I use then inside the while loop or outside the while loop( I mean the while loop that contains the event cases)?
please help me and accept my thanks....

You ned to run these in two separate loops. Look at the Producer/Consumer template. Put a two second time-out on the Dequeue Element and you have a loop that will run every two seconds. The loop should also handle information from the event structure.
Separate loops is the best way of handling this.

  • Dumping the data to XML file (Event driven )

    Hi ,
Can anybody help me on this requirement .
Whenever there is an updation or change in the HR Master data like insertion of new personnel number or deletion of personnel number then I need to dump the data to XML file . That means I need to make it event driven.
Will it be possible programmatically ?
    Please give me your inputs.
    Best Regards

    Hi Bhagat,
isn't it possible to use change pointers for this?
Then in partner profile use an XML file port and it should be done!
Probably this blog could help you:

  • New version of the LabHSM Toolkit for Complex Event-Driven Development is Now Available!

A new version of the unique toolkit is now available for download. As announced earlier, LabHSM makes it possible to easily create and then maintain complex event-driven applications in LabVIEW as a collection of HSM-driven active object VIs using a higher level of abstraction and agile software development methodologies. These active object VIs are created based on a universal Hierarchical State Machine ( HSM or statechart ) template. Therefore, all your code looks similar regardless of its functionality!
So, what’s new in version 1.1?
    • "No hands" block diagram modifications! Version 1.1 actually creates, renames, and removes actions on the block diagram as you define, rename, and remove them in the editor! (No, it can't fill in all the details for you, but it can do some, if you think ahead, by replicating similar actions.)
    • Two new screens, Events Usage and Actions Usage, (available in licensed copies only) clearly show where (in which state(s)/transition(s)) and how (is it an entry action, exit action or event handling action?) a particular event or action is used. Moreover, if after selecting an instance on the list, the Go To button is pressed, it makes the main screen jump to respective location in the HSM structure. In the case of Actions Usage screen, the respective action is also displayed on the block diagram. Thus, these screens provide two more different cross-sections of the HSM data set and two additional ways to navigate it – now along the Actions and Events dimensions too instead of just the state tree in the first version.
    • Version 1.1 can duplicate events or actions, which helps when you've got several that are similar. Changes in the events and actions lists are reflected immediately on the main screen and on the block diagram (which solves the previous problem of deleting a renamed event or action when it's still in use).
    • The Events and Actions List Editors are no longer modal and neither are the Events and Actions Usage screens, so you can have all the panels and the block diagram visible and move freely among them as you build your HSM (a good argument for an even larger monitor).
    • When you save an HSM file, version 1.1 automatically adds the .hsm extension if you leave it out and it remembers the last directory you used.
    • The Loaded VIs utility now can open and close block diagrams (if they are not protected with a password) and display only VIs with modal front panels, if desired—useful for quickly finding and closing accidentally opened (e.g., from the hierarchy window) modal VIs. Make a modal version of this utility and keep it on the Desktop for this purpose.
    • A new example of a simple hierarchical state machine and two more excellent tutorials from Paul F. Sullivan (SULLutions.com) are included into the package. The tutorials are also available online. The overview article has also been extended.
As before, the LabHSM toolkit is available for UNLIMITED PERIOD trial. Please visit http://www.labhsm.com for details and download. The site also contains references which you may want to check to learn more about hierarchical state machines and active object computing.

  • New LabHSM Toolkit - Agile development of complex event-driven maintainable LabVIEW applications with active objects / actors based on a universal Hierarchical State Machine / statechart template.

    Dear Fellow LabVIEW programmers:
Most of the systems you deal with are reactive. It means that their
primary function is constant interaction with their environment by
sending and receiving events. But most likely, they can have something
happening inside them too, even when they are not processing messages
received from outside. So, such systems have to continuosly react to
external and internal stimuli. Right? Moreover, most likely, they
consist of subsystems that are reactive too and, in turn, can have
their own "life", to an extent independent from other parts (with
which they still communicate, of course). Reactive (event-driven)
systems are more naturally modeled with active objects. So, why then
should we try to model and code them with GOOP and its passive
    ("dead"!) objects?
"Flat" State Machines have been known for decades to have severe
limitations. It's been more than 20 years since Dr. Harel invented
Hierarchical State Machines (statecharts) to fight those limitations.
Then why does NI still tout the same old good Moore FSM as the
ultimate tool for event-driven programming in LabVIEW in its $995
    State Diagram KIt?
The LabHSM toolkit we are happy to present, makes it possible to
easily create and then maintain complex event-driven applications in
LabVIEW as a collection of HSM-driven active object VIs using a higher
level of abstraction and agile software development methodologies.
These active object VIs are created based on a universal Hierarchical
State Machine ( HSM or statechart ) template. So. all your code looks
    similar regardless of its functionality!
We all love just jump to code, right? However, to be good boys, we
need to do design first. Then implement it in code. If the logic is
modified we need to redo the design first and then redo the code. When
using LabHSM where behavior information is abstracted into a separate
HSM data file editable with a supplied editor, there is no need for
coding separate from design any more. The modified behavior becomes
code automatically as soon as the HSM file is saved. Design is code!
The implementation basically follows Dr. Samek's Quantum Programming
paradigm. (see http://www.quantum-leaps.com). However, as already
mentioned, LabHSM stores the behavior information in a file separate
from the code itself. It also adds state dependent priorities to
events, a separate queue for public events/messages, and, of course,
some LabVIEW specific code like capturing front panel user events and
putting them into the private Events queue. Communication and
instantiation functions are also rather specific for LabVIEW.
It is available for UNLIMITED PERIOD trial. Please visit
http://www.labhsm.com for details and download. The site also contains
references which you may want to check to learn more about
hierarchical state machines and active object computing.

  • Failed to query Alarms & Events, alarms not logging

    Hi all,
I've recently run in to an issue with the DSC Alarm & Event logging. I have a number of shared variable libraries all setup to log both data and alarms to Citadel. I've double checked that the library itself is configured for logging data and alarms, as well as all the variables. Using the DSM, I can see all of the active alarms in the system across all libraries, and can receive all alarm change events programmatically.
For some reason, alarms for only one of the libraries are logging, and attempting to query the historical Alarms & Events through MAX throws an error roughly 14 out of 15 times (with no error code or indication of why it fails). I've also attempted to archive the Citadel database, with it failing with an unspecified error (presumably when archiving the alarms side of things, the data archive seemed to work).
Can anyone offer some insight on how to resolve the problem, preferably without data loss? Further, how can I prevent the issue in future?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Thanks for your reply Joey.
Libraries are being deployed using the DSC Deploy Libraries VI. The libraries also have data and alarm logging enabled programmatically. At the moment they're both being logged to the same database.
I can't find the "Read Historical Trend.vi" through the DSC Examples. The article was written in 2005 and I'm using DSC 2012 SP1, so I don't know if things have changed since then. I can view the data through MAX without issue if that's any consolation.
The mdf file is about 60MB, with the entire Citadel database at around 6GB.
The Citadel service is definitely running. I've also attempted restarting it (and the PC itself) but the issue is still present.
It's entirely possible there was a power failure, as this has been during a period of plant commissioning. When I can query the alarms through MAX there's a lot of data up to a certain point (end July), then it's very sporadic after that with only certain variable's alarms being logged.
I attempted another database archive and this time it managed to get all the way through, though the archived database also has the same problems querying alarms and events. So at this point I suspect the mdf/mds files are corrupt in some way.
Using the DSM, I've tried manually pointing the libraries to log alarms to a newly created database but this doesn't seem to work. No alarms or events are logged to the new database, and checking the library properties shows that the alarm database which I configured the library to log to had reverted to the original database. Am I missing something obvious here? Do I need to pre-create some traces in the new database before alarms and events will get logged there?
Given I have managed to make a 'good' archive of the database, I'd like to try just deleting the alarms and events portion of the database and start clean. Is there a correct way to do this? I did find this article, but am unsure if this will work with a potentially corrupted database: http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/9D3A81218264C68686256DE1005D794F If I stop all of the Citadel and SQLServer related services, can I simply delete the mdf/mds files?

  • Plc data logging using Labview

I am trying to communicate with PACSystem RX3i using Labview in order to log
data from PLC. Is this possible?
If it is possible, how could I implement it?

    Hi mber,
Thanks for posting at NI forums. I looked into the supported device & driver plug-in list for NI OPC Servers, and the PACSystem RX3i is supported. To configure the OPC server to communicate with this PLC, you can follow the steps given in this article. In the LabVIEW side, you can configure an I/O server as an OPC client to communicate with the server.
In order to configure the I/O server you will require the Datalogging and Supervisory Control (DSC) module installed for LabVIEW. In the article I just referenced, it shows how to configure bound variables to communicate with the PLC tags to retrieve data. The DSC module installs a Citadel database, so when you are configuring the bound variable, you can choose to log data depending on events, alarms or a historical log. This article describes the data logging options using the DSC module. You can also choose to read and display the data in a VI by dragging the bound variables to the block diagram and then log to a file using logging functions.

  • Run Code Continuously in Event Driven State Machine

Hi there, I was wondering what is the best way to run code continuously in an event driven state machine. Particularly, I am going off the JKI state machine. At the moment I put the code I want to run continuously (acquire from an instrument) in the timeout case of the event structure. When the user presses the button, the event sends the value 0 to the timeout terminal of the event structure (through a shift register). If the user stops the acquisition then the value -1 is sent to the timeout terminal. This is a tip that I took from an article by Mike Porter.
Would it be better to run this process in a separate loop? Is a state machine a bad design choice for running code continuously? I don't like my current solution because if I have another process I'll have to start putting case structures into the timeout case. Also, if the process takes a while then the event structure will take a while to respond.
    Thanks for your input!

    AKA_TG wrote:
Adding to that I believe Preview Queue element to read the data and Lossy  enqueue to transfer the I/O output, especially if the I/O device responds slowly. This should keep your event structure polling along very nicely during I/O calls to the other structure.
I actually prefer to use an User Event to send the data to the main event structure and/or whoever else needs it.  I am not a fan of the lossy enqueue (loss of data).  At that point, I might as well just use a Notifier and/or global variable.

  • Event Driven Programming is withheld from LabVIEW Base.

Can anyone give me a good answer why?  Every other programming language in the world has Event Driven Programming (EDP) built in, even free languages.  So when all I wanted was to use LV as a graphical programming language, (hey, that's what the "G" in G-programming stands for) I was disappointed to find that in my undervalued LV Base I can't look for mouse movement, mouse enter, mouse leave, keyboard actions and countless other possibilities that would be standard fare in any other language, unless, I pay over 1200 dollars more for the Full development package.  I know I should have read up on it more before purchasing, and understood what I would be missing out on.  But how was I to know that the fundamental programming function of EDP would be considered on par with Data Acquisition and Signal Processing?  So basically in order to get a complete programming language, I need to spend more than twice the cost of the Base package just to receive the last key component.  And all this because the Evaluation of LV gives you near limitless possibilities, so a new LV programmer gets used to having these tools at his/her disposal, only to yank some of the most critical tools.  So after saying all this, I am pleading for an explanation.  Why isn't there at least some add-on module that would allow a user to install the withheld functionality of EDP to a Base Development package?  Surely making money is the goal of any business, and I won't claim bait and switch here, or any other wrong doing here.  But there is, in my opinion, a marketing misjudgment here.
    -Orion Williams

Unfortunately to upgrade, it would cost me the difference between the base version and the full version.  What I think is in order is an add-on module that will give customers the functionality of EDP, without having to also pay for signal processing, which is clearly a more robust programming tool, that I don't need.  I am hoping to show NI that by withholding EDP from the base version with no upgrade option except paying for the full version, that their customers who come into LV at the base version are getting an undervalued version, and they know it, and that without at the very least, and add-on module for EDP, isolating smaller business and individuals.  I agree that signal processing, data acquisition and EDP are worth an extra 1300 dollars, but I don't agree that EDP on it's own is worth an extra 1300 dollars, but that's the only option that I have at this moment.  My suggestion is to create an add-on module that includes EDP and sell it for 300 dollars, since I know signal processing is a much more complex feature and is worth more of that upgrade price than EDP.  Of course all versions of LV should include EDP, so if that drives the price of LV base up, so be it.  Just don't let anyone else be fooled into thinking they are buying a Graphical Programming Language unless all the features of a programming language are included at all price points.  Can I get a witness?

  • Oracle CEP and Event Driven Architecture

I am a master student and writing my thesis on adaptive enterprise. An important component in my frameworks is the ability for organisation to response to sudden and unpredictable event.
I have found that Oracle offer the CEP technology, which considered as the corners stone for its SOA suit to achieve SOA 2.0 standards.
I only have very superficial understanding of CEP technology, and would like to learn from you
    1.     Has Oracle leveraged the capability of CEP for BI? Does the information from CEP feed back to BI to facilitate decision making?
    a.     If so, how? Can someone send me a link which elaborates the architecture?
    2.     According to the white paper, CEP is able to anticipate the future event based on existing event, how does it filter the false signal, and how accurate it might predict the future event?
    3.     Does CEP have the capability to distinguish the importance of an event?
    4.     Does CEP help BAM to trace back a particular transaction and identify which part of the service generates a warning signal?
    5.     Has Oracle integrated the Event Driven Architecture with Enterprise Manager yet? I want to know whether Oracle SOA suit support auto orchestration and choreography based on the event identified by CEP.
Thank you very much and I am looking forward for your replies.

Just wanted to add a few additional points. OCEP is a platform for building event-driven applications that encompasses a number of things; including clustering, high-availability, distributed cache integration, monitoring, management, logging, database access, and more. A part of the platform is the event processing engine. Previously, OCEP did embed an event processing engine that was based on Esper, although a lot of custom hardening, performance, and feature enhancements were done. The Esper technology has now been replaced by Oracle's own event processing engine, although the legacy Esper engine is still supported for backward compatibility. The event processing language supported by the new engine is called CQL (Continuous Query Language).
    Hope that helps.

  • Creating Event driven process chain

    Hi all,
In my scenario there are two chains in which
    1. First chain is normal chain, which we are using to
    load business data.
    2. Second chain will contain start variant and one ABAP
program that will call first chain and this second
    chain is event driven.
So can anybody send me relevant documents or
information regarding how to create event? How to
schedule process chain using event? and also how to call
    process chain using ABAP program?
    Thanks & Regards
