Events in iPhoto 11 no longer sorted by date

Ever since November 3, 2012, added events in my iPhoto Library have not been added to the end, but to the top of the list of Events and further down. In April 2013, the Events began to be added from the top of the list again. The whole library becomes more and more messy. On the other hand, once I choose to view the photos by clicking the Photos library in the menu bar to the left of the iPhoto  window, the photos align in the perfect order by date of shooting them.
However, I prefer to browse through my images in iPhoto using the Events view which is faster. I want to put it back in the old order — by date of the making of the photo — but that seems in vain.
I have tried (since the occurrence of the problem):
To upgrade to the newest version of  iPhoto. Currently, I'm using iPhoto '11 (version 9.5 [902.7]) of 2013.
To upgrade to the newest version of the operating system. Currently, I'm using OS X version 10.9 (Mavericks) of 2013
To change hardware. I used to have MacBook 13'' (mid-2007). Currently, I have a MacBook Pro with a 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7

Uh-uh, I think there is an answer on page https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4565337.
The solution provided by LarryHN is:
In the Events view, go to Menu > View > Sort events. In the roll-down menu, select By date.
Repeat it, if you also want to choose between Ascending or Descending sorting order.
Sorry to have bothered you all.

  • Photo Library on iPhone no longer sorted by date (oldest to newest).

My photo library on my iPhone was sorted by date (oldest to newest) and since upgrading to iOS 5.0 it is no longer sorted this way.  My specific events are still sorted that way, but when I view the entire library under "Photo Library" they are scattered and I can't find any pattern as to how they are sorted.
I went to Aperture which I use for my photo organization and under the Photos section where I see all my pictures they are sorted oldest to newest there.  I have tried unsyncing photos to my phone and then resyncing, but that didn't work.  It worked fine before iOS 5.0 and I was using Aperture then too.
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • YouTube Subscription: No longer sorted by date

I have a lot of YouTube areas I visited with subscriptions. For example I view GoogleTech Talks regularly.
Before the last Apple TV update the videos within any group of videos, such As GoogleTech Talks, were sorted by date with the latest videos at the top of the list.
Now the videos seem to appear randomly. Now I have to do a search but that is not very reliable or convenient.
Is there a way around this or is it a "bug/feature"?
It is almost unsuable now as a YouTube video viewer,
    Thanks..Dave

This should be fixed with 4.2.2 released today.  I have not tested it yet.

  • IPhoto Originals File now by Date and not Event - why?

Ever since I upgraded to iPhoto 09, I realized the original file structure in the iPhoto Library has changed back to Dates, rather than by Events, even though all my photos belong in a non-date event. This is the same as Iphoto 06. I got used to the Event structure in iPhoto 08.
All my previous events are still intact, but I have this problem for my new pics where if I put them in an event, the original file structure would be sorted by date. This is very annoying if I want to send an event to someone or if I'm using Front Row/Boxee to view a particular event. Does anyone have the same issue? I thought if I put a photo into an event, it would automatically update in the file structure immediately as well.
As you can see below, some files are sorted by Events and some files are sorted by Dates:

Is there anyway I can have this file organised by Events and not Dates?
    No.
The strict link between the Events in the iPhoto Window and the folders in the Finder was broken with iPhoto 09 and no one outside of Apple knows why.
However, it shouldn't matter, because you ahould not be accessing the files inside the iPhoto Package File anyway - bluntly it's not a supported way of accessing the files.
Make Albums of the photos to view in other apps.
    fwiw:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • View pics as list of events in iPhoto

I was searching and found this in another post, so wanted to share, with 1 small correction.   If you want to view your Events as a list instead of the default thumbnail view, you can switch to the Photos view (instead of Event view) with event titles turned on and all events collapsed.   Use option+command keys and click on the collapse triangle of any event to expand/collapse all events at once.
Only problem is: I don't see a sort by Event Title (Apple, take note for the next release?)...unless someone knows another way.   The events will have to be sorted by date or photo title.     Below is a sample.   Hope someone finds this useful

The free version will only let you copy 10 photos or less at a time. IMO iPhoto Library Manager is well worth the money as it can let you manage multiple libraries so efficiently.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • My photos not sorted by date in photos

my photos are no longer sorted by date after change to photos when viewed in all photos. Also how do you change the order from oldest to newest down the screen. An option for black background would be nice.

The problems reported here occurred right after updating to iOS according to the users as TD mentioned.
It's a compatibility problem between iPhoto and iOS6 that the only workaround would be to possibly batch change the date of the photos in iPhoto . Therefore we'll have to wait for it to be fixed with either an iPhoto update or an iOS update, which ever Apple feels is the proper item to to be changed.
If they update iPhoto first (which is probably what they'll do) it'll be called an iPhoto problem.

  • IPhoto does NOT sort 'By title'. Please advise

In the left pane Library-Photo view is selected.
In the menu "View->Sort Photos->By Title" is selected.
However, iPhoto sorts  photos by date, not by title.
    Any advise?
    I use 10.8 OS and 9.3.2 iPhoto.

    @Old Toad,
I am already sorting Events by Title unter 'Events' section. I wanted to have events as it as a list, not as thumbnails.
That is why I was trying to sort them in 'Photos' section, where they are shown as Text.
I have many events. And I wanted to structure them well, if i were to switch to iPhoto. As I see now, iPhoto does not have many useful library management features. So I am going to stick to Lightroom and Bridge (though I don't need so much editing power).
    @Terence Devlin,
I checked Aperture on my friend's computer (it *****, that apple is not giving trial versions).
It does not offer exactly what I was looking for.
But the Projects (aka 'Events' in iPhoto) can be sorted and put in folders (in the left panel). And it is displayed as a list (not thumbnails). This can't be done with iPhoto.
Morover, the Aperture has a much better search by keywords selection than iPhoto.
To pay 80 USD to try using Aperture. I really don't know. If there were a trial available....
I better stick to what I know works - Lightroom and Bridge.

  • Iphoto recent upgrade - all Events gone. Photos there, sorted only by date. No events

Since the recent upgrade, the new iPhoto has eliminated all Events. The photos are there (I think they all are, but not sure) but there are no events, the photos are all just sorted by date (no titles/events). I had just finished organizing all Events days before the upgrade.
    Not happy with this upgrade.

    KEY WORDS: "until it's resolved"
Rest assured, the new Photos lack of ability to automatically add new photos as "Events" will be resolved in much the same way that many unwanted, unneeded, and for some users, workflow-crippling changes to Apple operating systems and related software are ever resolved:
    1. Apple will do nothing. If few people complain through the proper channels via Feedback, the product will remain as is, and users will either eventually adapt to the new organizing schemes, or will find and use another product that better fit our ways of thinking, manipulating, and organizing our digital images, all shaped by our existing libraries of images that were in iPhoto.
    -OR-
    2. If enough authentic and specific complaints (in the low millions, at least) are sent promptly and directly to Apple via Feedback, and if the complaints are precise and persistent, and continue relentlessly over a period of years, then some similar capability MIGHT be added later, in some future update, in a couple of years.  (Think OS X 10.13.1, "Ellis Island" or whatever geographic icon that future iteration might be named after. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to import their digital images directly into "Events" once again…)
(There are of course many other possible scenarios, none of which involve returning iPhoto to the marketplace, nor "fixing" Photos to be like iPhoto was.)
    Not complaining*, simply explaining.
*Because registering outrage and frustration by complaining here in Apple Support Communities does absolutely nothing to ever resolve any issue with Apple. This is a only a user community that Apple allows to exist at it's pleasure. Apple does not officially monitor or ever officially respond to feedback here, and the moderators do not tolerate rants.

  • When I try to sync my photos on iphone using itunes, some events are incomplete on my iphone and they are all randomly placed instead of being sorted by date like on my iphoto. Help?

Using the latest Iphoto and Iphone5 software. I try to sync all my photos on my iphone and for some reasons, when they appear on my iphone, some events (when i go to events from mac) are incomplete (photos missing in some events) and randomly presented as opposed to being sorted by date like they are on my iphoto on my mac. This also happens on trying to sync my ipad... Solution anyone?

    Hey there vtec99,
It sounds like you are syncing photos from iPhoto on your computer but not all the photos you set to sync are actually coming over, and they are disorganized. Based on what you are describing, I would recommend deleting the iPod Photo cache which stores picture information that iTunes uses to sync photos from your iPhoto library. The following article will help you do that:
iTunes: Understanding the iPod Photo Cache folder
When you use iTunes to sync photos to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod, iTunes creates a folder called iPod Photo Cache. The iPod Photo Cache stores photos that are optimized for display on your device. The location of this folder depends on the syncing options you select. In iTunes, if you change the selection in the Sync Photos From menu, a new iPod Photo Cache folder will be created (and the previous folder will remain).
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • How do you sort your Photostream Events in iPhoto?

I have my photostream photos automatically imported to  iPhoto on my iMac - so I have lots of "events" with names like March 2013 photostream or July 2014 photostream. In each of these events, there are often a whole group of photos that belong together - like a birthday party. There are also some "one off" photos that just one or two shots of something I wanted to photograph (like a couple of pictures of a rainbow, or a picture of a recipe that I like to have on hand so that I can shop for ingredients). I am not sure how these are supposed to be handled. I can leave them all in photostream and add key words to the photos so that I can search for them perhaps (but then I have to manage a lot of key words. I cannot just add a key word "Birthday Party" since I attend many birthday parties. I would have to use a key work like "Bob's 30th birthday party" unless I wasted my search to turn up every picture ever taken at any birthday party!) i can create an event and call it "Bob's 30th birthday party. That seems to work ok - although I'm not sure if I should be doing this. As for the other photos, like the two of the rainbow and the one of the recipe, I don't know what to do with them. I can leave them in photostream with keywords. I can create an entire event called "Recipes" although the range of dates on such a folder might be quite wide since I am always saving recipes, which  means that when my events are sorted by date, my new recipes will appear in an early event along with the very first recipe I ever took a photo of!
I would love to know how others arrange their events . Do you ever create an event based upon a subject (My Cat Missy) even if the photos span a good deal of time? Or do you leave Missy's photos spread over many events depending upon what date you snapped the photo??? Have you ever completely emptied out a monthly photostream event (for example, let's say all your photostream photos for the month were taken at one wedding, so you moved them all into a single event called "Kate's Wedding."
See what I mean? Back in the windows days, when admittedly, I took fewer photos, I would create a folder for each big photo taking event (christmas, weddings, birthdays, a lovely walk in the park) and I would create just one folder with the year "Photos from 2008" to put in all the ones and twos photos that don't really belong with anything else. I also had a single folder with pictures of my cats and one that had photos of recipes. I added to these photos anytime I had a picture of my cat or a recipe to upload.
What does everyone recommend? Sorry for being so long winded. I cannot find any info on "how to sort or manage monthly photostream event photos" so perhaps I am the only one with this issue.

    1. There is no right answer. There is no "should". There is the way that makes sense to you.
    2. You can keyword photos with Birthday party, but also Title them with Bob's 30th, that gives you two ways to search for them
This might give you some ideas:
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 50k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • How do i sort events within events on iPhoto

I have a lot of events that have to do with one main event in iPhoto. I wanted to make one big event that I would click to then open all the specific event folders within it, is there any I can do this?

There is one drawback with huge events. I found that iPhoto and Aperture are a bit slower, if the event size is larger than about 1000 photos. Scrolling the event will take a long time, and smart albums based on that event will take longer to load, because iPhoto will have to search more photos. I prefer to use smart albums and keywords to group related photos and keep the events small - one shoot- one event. The added advantage is, that sorting the events by date will give meaningful results. If an event has photos from several years, the event date does not make much sense for sorting the events.

  • In iPhoto if I select View, then Sort Photos by title, how do I stop it reverting to sorting by date when I close iPhoto and re-open it later?

In iPhoto if I select View, then Sort Photos by title, how do I stop it reverting to sorting by date when I close iPhoto and re-open it later?

In what mode, Events, Photos or in an Album, are you when you select View ➙ Sort ➙ By Title?
As a first fix attempt try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • IPhoto, sort by date is not a true date/time sort

In iPhoto, sort by date is not a true date/time sort.  If you have two cameras with there own naming convention iPhoto sorts filename by date separating the two cameras in the view. Is there a way to sort by DATE&TIME ONLY?

Using two cameras using iPhoto to upload pictures.
Both cameras are set to the correct time and date.
    Connect camera ONE filenames IMGP0101
    By default:
    No event name
    Split events checked
    Select import 12 photos
    Creates events:
    Untitled event December 27, 2013
    In order by time
    Untitled event December 28, 2013
    In order by time
    Untitled event December 29, 2013
    In order by time
    Untitled event December 30, 2013
    Connect camera TWO filenames IMG_1101
    By default:
    No event name
    Split events checked
    Select import 12 photos
    Creates events:
    Untitled event December 28, 2013
    In order by time
    Untitled event December 29, 2013
    In order by time
    Untitled event December 30, 2013
Now I have 2 events for each of December 28, 29 and 30 they are not all under the same event name. My only option is to click and drag the pictures from the second set of events to the first set of events then they are in order.  This is a real pain to do.  There needs to be a way to reset the event dates so all pictures from both cameras end up in the right event date.
