Events management in iPhoto 2008.

Dear members:
After the upgrade to iPhoto 2008 with the new Events feature I noticed that the way the application organized the Events is less than ideal for my needs. I want to overide iPhoto and create my Events manually based on my own needs.
Question: How can I clear ALL events in iPhoto and start over ? I wish to reset ALL events so that there are none and then begin to create than from my Library. How can I delete the existing events and start over ?
Thank you in advance for your help,
Joseph

Are you wanting to just change the order of your current Events? The events are time based so you would have to change the time frame of the events with the Photos->Batch Change menu option so they fit in the order you would like. Select the event and all it's photos and change the date as I mentioned using the checkbox to add one minute between photos. That will put that event in the order of events determined by the date you selected.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Issue with recent "iPhoto Videos" not showing up in "Event Manager"

It has been awhile since I used iMovie '11 on my MacBook Pro with Retina Display.  I believe the last time I used it was in September or October of last year (2012) as most of my editing I have been doing on the iMovie iOS app as it has been sufficient for the majority of my needs.  I was running low on storage on my iPhone this past weekend and so transferred off all my videos to iPhoto.
I had need to edit some of the clips I transferred off and imported in iPhoto yesterday and so went to iMovie on the Mac to do so.  It had to process the new files and then it upgraded the thumbnails to high resolution images and it was then I noticed that it did not recognize any movies after September of 2012 in the "iPhoto Videos" section of the "Event Manager."  I was able to go into iPhoto and locate the more current videos to insure they were there and that they worked (I was worried at first they did not transfer off and just deleted or were corrupt in some manner).  I have tried restarting iMovie, rebooting the Mac, etc. and nothing seems to work.  Oddly enough, I can manually import the iPhoto files and iMovie finds them that way and they do work when manually imported.  For whatever reason they just do not appear in the "iPhoto Videos" section of the "Event Manager."  I am hoping someone here has an idea on why the Mac seemingly decided to stop recognizing videos after a certain date (September 2012 as is the case here) and how I can go about resolving the issue.

    Hi Folks,
Your iPhoto access in other programs such as iMovie depend on ~/library/preferences/com.apple.iApps.plist. Whenever you add new videos to iPhoto and close iPhoto, this file gets updated. If corrupted, pull the plist, open iPhoto and a new movie and then quit. See if iMovie picks it up.
As long as you have the latest dot release, I believe you should be fine in compatibility.

I had this problem and this fixed it. The problem started for me right after I upgraded iPhoto 9.4.1 to 9.4.2. I had to quit both apps, remove the plist file, launch iPhoto, then quit iPhoto, then launch iMovie... then iMovie asked about thumnails for videos and the iPhoto videos were back in iMovie.

  • How can I view my photos in "Events" like in iPhoto? How can I create events?  I have 55,000 photos and 1700 events so the only way I can possibly manage my photos is using events that are one slide in size.

I have 55,000 images organized into about 1700 events. The only reasonable way to view my library is using events in iPhoto where each event has one image That still leaves 1700 images to sort through but that is a lot easier than 55,000 images.  In the side bar is a folder with "iPhoto Events" but those views still show all of the slides.  How can I create events and view my photos as events as in iPhoto?  Events are critical for large libraries and has been my primary way to sort images.
    Thanks!

I had a problem a couple of months ago when iPhotos suddenly rearranged the order of my Events (Why won't iPhoto let me arrange my photos?) .  I was told "Use albums not events - events are not a good way to organize - albums and folder are designed for organisation and are very flexible".
Haha!  I should have paid attention and read between the lines!  My iPhotos were highly organised groupings - not according to date but the way I wanted them - and it was so easy to do!  I see now that if I had them all in albums, as per the Apple Apologist suggestion, I wouldn't have this unholy mess I have been left with just to make iPhone & iCloud users happy.  I am now going through Photos and making Albums (of what used to be in my Events)  ... maybe I'll get this finished before they do another non user friendly update!

  • Iphoto 2008

    Hello.
I went to download a photo from my hard drive to the internet and usually I can do this but today I receive a message
INSTALL IPHOTO 5 OR LATER TO SEE PHOTO'S IN THIS LIBRARY
I have IPHOTO 2008, so some how IPHOTO has disappeared it's not in my library...where did it go?
    Can anyone help me?
    I really appreciate your time.
    Thanks.

Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • How do i manage 1 iphoto library on 2 external drives?

I'm trying to find the most efficient way to manage 1 iphoto library across 2 external drives. In case one of my external drives dies, I'll have a backup.
I know how to copy my iphoto library onto another drive, but my question is how to manage the 2 drives when i add photos/videos to them from my iphone.
Currently, I import photos/vids from iphone onto 1 drive. Then unmount the external drive and hook up another drive. I direct iphoto to use the new drive as it's library and then import the photos/vids again onto the second drive. I make sure the event is named the same, so I have the same iphoto setup across both drives. Then i delete the photos/vids from my iphone.
Is there a more efficient way to do this? Or software that can do this in one step?
Thanks in advance for any help!

You want to have a backup of your working library on your MacBook Pro on each of two external HDs, correct?
If yes then use a backup application like Synk or Synk Pro that can incrementally backup the library, i.e. copy only those new of modified files.  If you go to MacUpdate.com and do a search for "backup" you'll get a list of potential candidates.
Then all you need to do is connect EHD#1 and run the backup app to update the library then connect EHD#2 and do the same.  It only takes several seconds to make the incremental backup.  Synk Pro can be configured to automically start the backup when the external drives are connected.  I'm not sure but believe some of the other backup apps could do the same.

  • Moving events from one iPhoto library to another

I want to move some events from one iPhoto library to another.  Does anyone know that this is possible and if so, how do I do it?

iPhoto cannot do it . The full version of iPhoto Library Manager can transfer events between libraries, or Aperture can do this.
You can download iPhoto Library Manager here:  iPhoto Library Manager
If you want to save the money for additional tools, doit manually:
Export the photos from each event you want to transfer to a folder.
Import the folders with images to your other iPhoto library.
You have to make up your mind, if you want to move the original files to your other library or the edited versions.  Only exporting the original files instead of the edited files will preserve the full quality. Actually, you want to export both. Using iPhoto library Manager will ensure, that both will be transferred and paired as one photo.

  • What is the best way to manage my iPhoto, which is taking up too much space on my MacBook Pro?

What is the best way to manage my iPhoto, which is taking up too much space on my MacBook Pro?
Specifically, I'd like to keep some of my favorite pictures on the laptop while moving the rest to an external hard drive. Is there a way to tag just a few pictures inside an event/album as "favorite", while storing the rest in an EHD, but still keep them connected to the same event/album? I'd like to have just the favorite pictures on the laptop, but when I have the EHD connected,  be able to view all my pictures in the same place, and not have to browse through separate hard drives. Ideally, whether or not a picture is designated as "favorite" will determine where it resides.
    Is this at all possible?
I have only 7 GB left on my HD and I'm desperately needing a solution!
    Thanks!

You need two libraries to do this. One on the external with all your Photos. One on the internal with a subset - your favourites. You do it this way to make backing up easier - that is, back up the library with everything, so you're only backing up one.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events/albums/photos you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

  • Events View in iPhoto '08

When I go to the Events view in iPhoto '08 about half of my events groups do not show the key photos. Similarly, when you drag the mouse across the front of the event window in some instances no photos appear, in others only half appear and the rest do not. However, when double clicking on the event all photos show in the file. How can I fix this? Why does it do that? Thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The reason iPhoto won't let you select the Library is because it does not see a valid Library there. This means that your database has been damaged.

  • Sometimes after creating an event folder on iPhoto, all my pictures in that event will be gone the next time I open iPhoto. Why is this happening? Is there a way to retrieve the missing photos?

Sometimes after creating an event folder on iPhoto, all my pictures in that event will be gone the next time I open iPhoto. Why is this happening? Is there a way to retrieve the missing photos?
Most events I make on iphoto will still be there the next time I open iPhoto, while other event FOLDERS will be there, but pictures in it gone.

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
