Events: sharing and syncing

I have been hesitant to use iPhoto in the past. Seams much easier just to have a folder in finder. But there are a few perks with using it, so I've decided to go a head and use it. Especially having multiple Macs in the family, the wife wants to see my photos. I figured it would be easy just to turn on the sharing. Also, I have a MBP, so having the photos being available in front row as well! And then there's the iPods and the iPhones.
I finally made the jump from iLife '06 to '08, and drug 240 folders into iPhoto 08. It did a pretty good job with creating events for each folder, with the proper names.
I thought everything was going to be cool until I tried looking at the Photos through Front Row, and you cant' see events in front row. What's the deal? I can only see albums. Same for syncing with iPods/iPhones, same for sharing Photos across a network. You can only see albums, and not events.
I didn't really have a lot of albums. I have a few when I "thought" I was going to use iPhoto before. I found out you can't drag a set of folders to the albums and have it create an album for each folder. I started doing it one by one and gave up. Too tedious!
Anyone know if Apple is going to fix this? If not, I'd like to have each of my events be an albums, but it seams like you have to do ONE event at a time. I tried dragging all my folders at once into the albums, but it would make one big album. Same for events. I want a separate album for each event (or folder on my drive).
Is there any way to automate this process in iLife 08? Or do I have to manually create an album for each event/folder? Or will Apple decide to support events in all the other avenues you use to use "albums" for.

I don't believe rolls were viewable in Front Row either. It's just the nature of the beast. I guess Apple thinks users will be selective of what they put into albums for viewing thru Front Row.
If you want to create an album of each event just drag the event into the left hand pane. An album with the same name as the event will be created. With albums you can better sort the photos into the viewing order than in Events which lack manual sorting.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • HT4759 Question re calendar sharing and syncing

I am currently using Google Drive, Google Calendars and a windowns operating system, Intewrnet Explorer for emails . Can I sync and share my google calendars with the ipad using icloud?

    Hi Darren,
Sorry no one was able to help you. Not sure I can but I'll try
    1) Try AppleCare if you can. They might help though I doubt it.
    2) If you are near an Apple Store of dealer they might be able to help.
    3) You might try to find a local or inline user group.
    4) Look at the top of this iCal list as a topic regarding sharing is happening and it might lead to leads about how to lock some calendars.
    5) Unless you have a backup, I doubt you'll be able to recover what has been deleted.
    6) Shoot your question by the ical forum (or maybe the OSX forum)at macosxhints: http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=43128
Bear in mind, iCal isn't really designed to be a mission critical (at this point) so I don't think I'd run my business on it if I wasn't a very capable user.
You'll want to let folks know what version of OSX and iCal you are running as things have changed.
Some of us on this list are trying to better understand how iCal works so maybe we'll be able to offer you some help later. You might try tracking down the various iCal files and see what you can do (do this under a different user for experimenting). The locations depend on what version you are running. You might be able to "lock" some aspects.
You might also want to consider a more robust application for your needs.
And your folks might need some more training or more help than you can give them.

  • ICal sharing and syncing

My wife keeps the family calendar in iCal, and I'm trying to be able to share in that information. It's harder than you might think. Before I had .Mac, I published my wife's calendar through iCalX, and subscribed to it on my Mac. Her calendar was read only, and it didn't share my calendar at all, but otherwise It worked okay. The big downside to this arrangement was updating. She had to be the one to take charge of the pubishing of her calendar, and she could either publish the calendar 'after each change' or 'manually'. 'After each change' took too long if there were server problems on iCalX (which there oftren were), and that quickly frustrated her, so she stopped, and she never remembered to publish it manually, so I had to remember to update her calendar from her computer. Very awkward.
Then I got .Mac. I tried publishing her calendar through .Mac, but found out that there was no password protection (unlike iCalX), and I didn't want everyone to read the calendar, so that was out. I only wanted to share between us. Clearly, publishing was designed to share calendar information with the world, not internally between families.
I finally found what I thought was the perfect solution. I used my .Mac account to sync my calendars, email, bookmarks, etc. Then I had my wife use my .Mac account to sync just the calendar portion (she obviously doesn't want to sync my bookmarks or email). Then when I synced my Mac, everything worked well. Plus, it shared my calendar with her as well. All done automatically when .Mac syncs. Perfect, I thought. I'm not sure that this was necessarily how .Mac was designed, but it seemed to work okay for us.
Then my wife got a laptop to go along with her desktop Mac. "How do I keep things in sync between these two machines?" she says. "Well, I guess you'll have to get your own .Mac account because that's what it's designed for", I reply. However, it dawned on me that if she got her own .Mac account, and used that to sync between her two machines, we would be unable to continue our existing arrangement. OS X seems to allow you to sign in to only one .Mac account at a time.
This strikes me as a pretty common thing to want to do. I'm sure others have struggled with this question. Perhaps I need to set up some sort of server solution? Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks in advance.
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi there...As far as i know, you can only sync from one computer. Example:- if you sync your ical to other machines eg. wifes laptop, kids etc, from then on it must be you syncing on your machine with the family with one account. The minute someone else does it from another machine, the previous entries will be erased.
In short, use one computer to sync.
    Good Luck!!!

  • Our team cannot see shared and sync'd files in our Creative Cloud account.  How can we fix this?

The team members are logged in, have loaded a test file in the Creative Cloud Files directory, uploaded them to the Cloud and made the files public, but we cannot see them in the web browser under "Creative Cloud Files".
The files seem to be there because we can send an email with a link to the files and can see them through the linke, just not in the browser.
What might we be doing wrong?

Folder sharing is not available yet. It is being worked on.
So currently a file is owned by one Adobe ID. That Adobe ID can create a public sharing link to that file. Anyone can access this link whether or not they are signed in with an Adobe ID.

  • Windows : Syncing photos Events, Faces and Places from Phtoshop Elements 8

    Hi everyone,
I buy an iPad yesturday and i try to sync my photos.
I'm a PC user (windows 7 x64) so I try to use Photoshop Elements 8 in order to sync my photo with iTunes as describe in the iTunes manual.
Unfortunatly, I can sync the photo albums only ... but I can't sync events, faces and places information...
Is it normal ? Doesn't PSE 8 support the syncing of these information ??
If this is correct, is there an issue to have a full support in iPad Photo or do you know some app able to sync this ?
Thanks for your replies and excuse my english!
    Mathieu from France.

Your English is better than my French.
For the folders syncing with windows pc's Photo albums:
    1) Create a master sync folder on your pc with no photo files at the root level of the folder.
    2) Create sub-folders within the master sync folder with the subfolders named what you want the ipad's photo albums to be named.
    3) Place the photo files you want to sync in the appropriate subfolder within the master sync folder.
    4) In itunes on the photos tab, select the master folder as the sync folder.
    5) After syncing, each subfolder will be an album on the ipad with the proper photos contained there-in.
For the Places; The ipad should display Places information for any photo with geotagging data. This is stored with the photo in the metadata. It is the Lat/Long of the photo. This info must be included on the photo file before syncing.
For the Events, I use separate folders within the master sync folder for each event. (see above).
I am not sure how Events and Faces works with PSE8 or if the method PSE8 uses is compatable with the ipad. iPhoto on a mac works for events and faces on the ipad, based on posts I have read here.

  • HT201301 After file sharing, if a new iTunes account is added to the device and synced, will the shared files be deleted?

My company would like to give out iPads to contest winners and have company owned "propoganda" loaded onto the iPad for the winners to view. Most likely videos, word documents and possibly more. I have a couple of questions about that.
Without building a file sharing app ourselves what apps are the best for file sharing through iTunes?
If we load files onto a device using our iTunes Account, then hand it over to the winner and they put their iTunes account on the device and sync it, will the files we pre-loaded be erased?
If so, are there any other solutions to accomplish this task?
Thank you for any help you can provide!

Syncing with your computer will delete data from his phone but you should be able to restore his backup.
    iOS: How to back up
However, he won't be able to play music purchased under a different iTunes account than the one his phone is signed into.  He can change the account to yours, but any apps he purchased under his account will no longer update, and any purchases he makes will go on your account.

Hello, Mathieu. I think that is normal. From the ipad user guide:
Photos organizes collections by Albums, Events, Faces, and Places. Places uses the location information encoded within each photo, and not all photos may have this information. Events and Faces must first be configured in iPhoto or Aperture on a Mac, then synced to iPad.

My Outlook/iCloud calendar invites to others appear to work on my end and sync with my PC and mobile, but when other people "accept" the invite, it will not populate/add in to their calendar. How can I fix this without turning off iCloud?
I am at a new office that uses Outlook (not Outlook Exchange) which does not sync with my mobile... I just got iCloud set up on my PC to sync my contacts, calendar, reminders, etc... The sync worked (not without flaws, but the other issues seem solvable... I think), so that i can now see all my appointments on both my phone and on my PC. The problem I am having is that iCloud moved all of my calendar items from Outlook into iCloud calendar and now when I send out meeting/calendar invites the recipients may accept them, but the meeting does not get added to their calendar. This is a huge problem and may mean that i need to turn off iCloud.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks!

I am replying to my own post here as I seem to have fixed the problem.
I do have some calendars that are shared. Some of those are shared with users who have time zone support turned on. So i activated time zone support on my iphone, then deleted my icloud subscription. I then signed in to icloud again and voila... problem solved.
It is a weird one as the other calendar views were always fine and when you opened an event that appeared in the wrong day (on list view), the correct date of the event was shown in the information...
one more bug in a complicated system I guess

  • Ical bug: updates to outlook events with iCloud sync do not work

I have a bug that needs to be submitted to Apple Developers. I am not sure that this is the correct forum, but here goes.
I have a calendar that syncs from my Mac to iCloud. If I get a calendar invite from someone using outlook, everything works fine. I accept the invite and it is added to ical (6) and syncs with the iCloud calendar.
Now if I get an update to the invite - especially a change of time, the local version on my mac updates to the changed event. Up to now everything is fine, but as soon as iCal syncs with iCloud, the iCloud server thinks that I am trying to change an event that someone else is the organiser of. It then disallows the update. This in turn pops an error up on my mac - 'The server responded: “403” to operation CalDAVWriteEntityQueueableOperation'.
I have looked for workarounds/fixes but believe that none exist and that this is a core bug with iCal/iCloud sync and the way it tries to prevent updates to meetings organised by another party.

    Hello vmepani
maybe I can suggest to you a way to circumvent the problem.
Why are you keeping a local Calendar copy under "my Mac"?
I do have my calendar shared through iCloud between my Mac Mountain Lion, the iPhone and the iPad (both alread IOS7) but don't need to keep any local copy of it in neither device. Anyway I'm able to see the calendar on each device even if I'm offline.
That's way I never had the problem you mentioned.
Not sure if this would work for you as well.
    cheers

My wife bought an iPad Air and synced contact from our PC (Outlook), now all our contacts in Outlook have gone and we have to go to iCloud to get them, and even then they are a bit jumbled. How do I get my data back onto my PC?

If you can see the iCloud contacts in Outlook, you can copy them back to your PC by selecting all the contacts (click one, then press Control-A), then drag and drop the selected contacts to Contacts under My Contacts on the left sidebar of Outlook.
If you want to copy your calendar back to Outlook, select your iCloud calendar on the left sidebar of Outlook, switch to the list view (select View from the ribbon, then click Change View>List), select your events (click on a single event, then press Control-A), then control drag and drop them to Calendar under My Calendars on the left sidebar.
Then you can sign out of iCloud on the iCloud control panel and your local copies will still be there.  If you want to add your iCloud email account back to iCloud, you can do this with these settings: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4864.

  • Setting up Brand New iPad 2 - iTunes Sharing and Getting Files from old iTunes Account

Greetings.  I recently purchased an iPad 2 (convert after 20 years of PC use) and have been waiting to set it up until I knew the proper way to proceed.  I have multiple questions and am hoping those of you with more Apple experience can help out a convert .
I would like to set it up with a new iTunes account so when my wife gets her iPad 2 next year we can share apps and movies we buy on iTunes.  Do you always have to sync your iPad to your PC to get your latest purchases or can you do that via the wireless connection directly on the iPad after the initial set-up?
That said, if one of us buys an app/movie, will we both have to carry it on our iPads or will they store remotely on iTunes or on our PCs?  I'm just concerned about maxing out the storage space on the iPad.  Do the purchases need to occur on your PC vs. the iPad itself for both to have the app/movie access?
I've also read about iCloud issues and syncing all calendar/contact/etc. accounts if two iPads are set-up with the same Apple ID.  What's the best way to initially configure the iPads so that you avoid this headache in the future?
Once I get all this settled and get a new iTunes shared account working, is there any way to get the movies I have in both of our old iTunes accounts into the new shared iTunes account?  Can I simply drop them on a jump drive from one PC and place them into an appropriate folder on the new PC that the iPad sync's to if it does in fact need to sync?
Again, appreciate all the help and sorry for all of the confusion and multiple thoughts.  I would just like to set this thing up once and for all the right way.
    Thanks again

1, you can (re-)download a lot of purchases directly on the iPad without having to connect to your computer - apps and ibooks can be re-downloaded (as long as they remain available), music can be re-downloaded in some countries; tv shows can currently only be re-downloaded in the US. Re-downloading
2, films are a one-time only download, so you can either download it on your computer's iTunes and sync it to your device(s), or if you download it directly on the iPad you will need to then copy it to your computer's iTunes (connect the iPad and do File > Transfer Purchases) so that you can make a backup and copy it to your other iPods, iPads etc.
3, I haven't had any problems with iCloud, but then I don't share my account so it's only my account and contacts on my iPad and iPhone.
4, you can authorise your old accounts on your computer's iTunes (Store > Authorise This Computer) and copy the films onto it : File > Add File To Library - you can't copy or transfer content to a different account (nor can you combine accounts), they will remain tied to the original account
The iPad's manual has some info about syncing and each of the built-in apps (the iBooks app is covered in the manual though it isn't pre-installed, but you can download it for free from the store) - the manual can be downloaded from here http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad

No it's not stealing. They have an allowance that you can share with so many computers/devices. You'll have to authorize her computer to play/use anything bought on your acct. You can do this under the Store menu at top when iTunes is open on her computer.
As far as getting it all on her computer....I think but I am not sure (because I don't use the feature) but I think if you turn on Home Sharing in iTunes it may copy the music to her computer. I don't know maybe it just streams it. If nothing else you can sign into your acct on her computer and download it all to her computer from the cloud. Not sure exactly how to go about that, I haven't had to do that yet. I wonder if once you authorize her computer and then set it up for automatic downloads (under Edit>Preferences>Store) if everything would download. Sorry I'm not much help on that.

  • Family sharing and iTunes Allowances

My daughter is on family sharing so that she can access music she purchased on my account before she had her own account AND I have created an iTunes allowance for her for new purchases to limit her spending on her account. Should her new purchases come FIRST from her allowance instead of my card? So far all her purchases are being charged to my card. Her allowance does show up on her account, so I know her account has been properly credited with the funds. Is there a better way to give her access to previously purchased music/apps on my account (without giving her access to my credit card)? Thanks for any help you can offer.

    Hi yosemitedoran,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  If I'm understanding your question ... your daughter has two different Apple ID's?  If so, she can't use iTunes Allowances on the Apple ID she is using for Family Sharing.
Start or join a family group using Family Sharing - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201088
    Start a family group
One adult in the family—the family organizer—can set up Family Sharing for the group. When you set up Family Sharing, you'll be asked to confirm that you agree to pay for purchases initiated by the family members you invite and that you have a valid payment method on file. Valid payment methods for setting up Family Sharing include credit cards and debit cards.
Set up and manage iTunes Allowance - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-is/HT201676
If you use Family Sharing and Ask to Buy is enabled for your account, you can't buy iTunes Allowances.
For the Apple ID that is not part of Family Sharing, this is a possible option:
Set up your Apple ID for iCloud and iTunes - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204053
I have purchased music, apps, or books with multiple Apple IDs. How can I get all of this content onto my iOS device?
First, copy all of your purchased content so that it's on the same Mac or PC with iTunes. This computer should be the one you sync your device with.
iTunes for Mac: How to copy purchases between computers
iTunes for Windows: How to copy purchases between computers
Next, authorize your computer to play content with each Apple ID in iTunes. After your computer is authorized for all of your content, it can be synced to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
I hope this information helps ....

  • ICloud with personal email - Calendar Event Sharing

Calendar event sharing seems to be a pain for a lot of people especially because of the new iCloud and even more so if you are a legacy .Me or .Mac user.
First of all if you are a first time iCloud user and you entered your own personal e-mail address as your AppleID - you will not be able to send calendar events.
Calendar events (created from your computer (iCal or iPhone) to your spouse or whomever) have to be sent by Apple.  If Apple does not have a .mac or .me account associated to your iCloud account it doesn't work.  What happens is you can not invite anyone to events and when someone invites you, instead of the calendar event going into your calendar you get the invite as an e-mail message and you have to manually download the ical request.
BRAND NEW iCLOUD USER BUT CAN'T SEND CALENDAR EVENTS
So if you created an iCloud account from scratch with a personal e-mail address, you must go to your system prefs > iCloud, turn on "Mail & Notes" (even if you are not using iCloud e-mailand are using your own) THEN iCloud will ask you to create a new .me email address!  You have to come up with a new email address and it will be associated with your AppleID.  Then you can turn off the Mail & Notes option and now the calendar can send and accept calendar invites.
.ME OR .MAC USER MIGRATION BUT CAN'T SEND CALENDAR EVENTS
When I migrated from my .me account to iCould everything moved fine.  But I soon came to realize that I no longer needed my .me account anymore.  I had a different AppleID than my .me so I figured, now is a good time to stop using my [email protected] account and switch to my personal AppleID '[email protected]' address.  When I deleted my old iCloud account from my computer and added a new one (with my old original appleID) i was then unable to send calendar events.  I realized that Apple has no way to send on my behalf.  I have no email accout with apple.  That is just because your AppleID is an email address doen not mean that Apple can use it to send and recieve email.  * Your AppleID being your persoanl email address does not mean you have created an email account with apple, it means that you have created a Login ID with apple *  Much the same way that Amazon.com can ask you to login and you enter your personal email address to do so.. In both cases they are just using your email as your ID with their system.  SO, if you create an iCloud account from an AppleID that is your primary email address this means that you will also need a email address with Apple's .me or .mac system to send on your behalf, calendar invites.

Only icloud.com email accounts can be used on icloud now.  No personal domains.  You will have to buy a contract at some web/email provider to set up an account with them.
I very much doubt Apple is going to get into the provider business.
