Events vs projects files---am i using twice the hard drive space?

If i have a movie in events file...then move it to projects file, does it utilize twice as much hard drive space becuase there are two movies--one in each file?

An iMovie project is a text file in hexadecimal that contains instructions for creating your edited movie. The movie is created when you use the SHARE menu by running the instructions in the project.
The project instructions will reference the actual video files which are contained in the Events. So if you delete your Event files, your projects will no longer have anything to reference, and they will no longer work.
So the answer is, no, there is not a duplicate created when you drag a clip to a project.
This has several advantages. You can use an Event in multiple projects without duplicating space. You can make edits, color correction, etc, and none of this is destructive to the original footage.

Hi - I'm having the same problem with freeing up space on the HD. If I can't free space if I'm using any part of the clip, how can I split up the clips so that I can discard the part I won't use? This is crazy! I have only 4 GB of free space left!
Also, I've tried to transfer the project file to my external HD but I keep getting an error saying I can't transfer it. I've been told this is because I don't have enough space on the HD for the transfer. I tried a similar transfer with another computer with plenty of HD space but the same error occurred. Is there a way to break up the project file into small pieces for the transfer (I'm thinking the whole movie file is just too big)?
    Thanks for any info!

Do I need to use all the hard drive for time machine or can I partition it

You cannot partition a TC disk.
See pondini about mixing data and backups.. but remember this.. the TC has no way to back itself up and TM cannot backup files on the TC. Anything not backed up on the TC will be lost at some future point.

Id choose the I5 yes, depends on what your usage is going to be,
....your question about "128 gig being enough" begs the question for IDEALIZED USE of your macbook AIr
In the case of a Macbook Air with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace.  You should never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’.
*Generally, unless you NEED the data at least once every few weeks or once a month,...it really does'nt NEED to be on the SSD of your Macbook Air.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their computers internal HD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your macbook has a HD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your computer to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.
Ive got more APPS than any human should have on my 128gig AIR,..(50 or so),....and 10gig of working data, important files etc etc.
Still have 82gig available....... the entire point is that someone shouldnt consider the Air a "storage device" for tons of pics, music, vids, etc.
*Never consider any computer a data storage device at any time under any circumstance, rather a data creation, sending, and manipulation device. Anyone who thinks data is safe on any computer, even copied upon multiple partitions is making a mistake that will, without fail, strike.
For needs of packing around a LOT of "big data" with your Air in its case..., get a nice 1TB HD for $70, or even a 2TB drive not much bigger.

  • If i download my photos into iPhoto does that use up more hard drive space?

If I download my photos into iPhoto does that use up more hard drive space on my mac?

iPhoto and Lightroom are similar apps - although LR is a far more capable app - and that the price it should be, of course. But the two apps are similar in that they both offer
    Photo Management
    Non-Destructive Processing
So, essentially, they both play the same part in the workflow.
    The procedure would be to
Download the images from the camera into the Photo Manager (regardless of which one you choose)
Review and select in the Manager
Trash the unwanted with the Manager
Process the images - that is, in most cases edit them.
It is at this point - and only this point - that Photoshop might come into play. Both of these apps can act as a 'front-end' for Photoshop - after all, they're the Managers. But in truth, if you're using Lightroom then you very likely do not need Photoshop at all, and for anything that does require layers you can use one of the many - much less expensive - alternatives. But I think the common experience is that with Lightroom (like Aperture) the requirement for the sledgehammer that is Photoshop really fades away.
So pick one horse and ride it. Choose between LR and iPhoto. Use it like it's intended. Don't get involved in other necessary apps. Don't review before bringing the photo into the manager - that's what the manager is for.

  • Events and Projects not opening after Restoring from broken Hard drive.

    Hi all!
I have a major problem. After almost 3 months editing 6 projects within the same library the hard drive died. These projects are for a very important client and are worth a lot of time and money. We always backup all the raw material on 3 hard drives so we do have all the raw material, however FCPX for some reason had stopped making backups of the projects after it was updated to 10.1.2.  (The loss of these projects could mean the downfall of my production company.) We had a professional data recovery company recover all the data to a new hard drive without any problem, we can see the libraries and open them, HOWEVER the events and projects within the libraries DO NOT OPEN OR SHOW UP.
I have entered into the library in the finder and everything seems to be there, all the events files show up. But FCPX wont recognize them.
Any help would be much appreciated,
    Thanks, Tom
You can see here that everything is inside the library folder.
But they don't show up in FCPX.
    P.S
Also this file is showing up only after the data was restored.

The journal files are something that've been generated by the data recovery. It's completely hosed the data base.
I don't know if this will work. Try carefully removing all the journal files. Put them somewhere else in folders with the location where they came from. Also move out the currentversion.flexolibrary file. Hopefully without the flexolibrary file the application will generate a new one.  Then launch the application.
WHy did you continue to operate when there were no backups, without even a hard drive backup?
Wwhat version of the software are you using? 10.1.2?

  • Using the Hard drive space

I want to buy a classic iPod either 80 or 160gb, but my question is my setup. I have a laptop with only a 60gb hard drive with an external 500gb hard drive. Will I be able to use my external drive to house my itunes files so I can use all 160gb?

Of course there is. Rather than another long post, let me just point you to another thread where I talked about this, specifically for someone with a laptop that would use the External drive library when at home and then could switch to a much smaller library on the laptop when out and about.

  • Used G5 minimal hard drive space

Just bought a used G5 single processor with an 80 gig drive but found there's only 50 available even though the only major software on the machine is CS Photoshop and Microsoft Word. Where's my extra drive space and how do I get it back without reformatting (I don't have the original PS CS or MSW disks)?

Hi, Larry, and welcome to the Discussions!
I'd look in the user folder (or user folders, if there are multiple users set up) to see what's in there. Use Get Info to see the folder sizes being used. Likely space hogs might be found in the Movies, Music, and Pictures folders. The Documents folder might also be loaded with junk, including the downloads folder. Also do a Spotlight search for a folder named Previous Systems, which you should look at if there are any, and delete them if you don't need anything there (if you're unsure, back them up to disc). If you don't find large amounts of files to trash, then download and run WhatSize to see what is taking up your space.
Off-topic... I don't know where you got the Mac, but if the admin accounts are active and depending how your Sharing and other preferences are configured, be aware that it's possible that your Mac could be accessible by a third party while it's connected to a modem. Also, if the original owner retained possession of the PS CS and Word software discs, you might look into the legality of using these programs. Most licenses require physical transfer of the original software as part of the agreement.

  • Disk utility used up my hard drive space?

I recently had a hard drive crash and was trying to repair it with disk utilities.  I had the bad drive in an external drive case hooked up to my Macbook Pro via usb.  During the process Disk Utility used about 20 GB of drive space on the internal drive on the laptop.  I'm not sure what it was doing, but as it ran I could watch my available space go down.  When the process was done, it said it couldn't repair the disk.  Now I can't figure out how to get my drive space back in the internal drive of my Macbook Pro.  I have rebooted, repaired permissions and used the Yasu system utility.  There is nothing in the trash to be emptied.  I can't thnk of anything else.  Has anyone else come across this happening?

Use a disk inventory utility like OmniDiskSweeper to find out what is taking the space.

  • HT1338 My itunes keeps telling me i do not have enough access permissions to do anything. I had used all my hard drive space so i deleted some files. i deleted the downloads folder and a few others and this is when this problem occurred. Please help!

I tried changing the permissions and installing a new itunes but nothing is working!

Had the same thing happen to me a few weeks back when I switched computers and migrated.  Here's what worked on my iMac, so maybe it'll work on your iPad, too.  Go to User(your home folder)/Music.  Select/highlight your "Music" folder.  Then do Command-I ("Get Info" from the File menu), click on the padlock icon in the lower right of the new window.  Enter your user password.  Click on your username just above the now-open padlock.  Select "Read & Write" if it's on "Read Only," "Write Only," or "No Access."  Now having your user account with "Read & Write" privileges (it may have been this way already; still do this next step), click on the gear on the bottom-center of that window.  Click on "Apply to all enclosed items."  When the pop-up says "Are you sure?" (or the equivalent), say "yes."  This will grant access privileges to your user account for all the music files inside your music folder--all your iTunes stuff included).  Then you should be good to go.

  • Firefox (7.0.1) was running fine on XP. Then it started using running the hard drive very hard. Even when I tried to close it, Firefox.exe was still up and hogging the hard drive. Had to close the process using Task Manager to get the computer back.

After upgrading to 7.0.1, Firefox worked fine for about a week then the computer became very slow - first the laptop, then, a couple of days later, the desktop. In both cases, it was as described above. Happens every time Firefox is started. Have had to stop using Firefox and go back to Opera and Chrome. Firefox was the default.

  • Firefox is using too much hard drive space

According to my control panel, mozilla firefox is taking 8gb of my hard drive.

I think it is very strange also, but I did end up uninstalling it and reinstalling it on my hdd instead of my ssd. In doing so I free'd up 5gb of hard drive space on my ssd. I have no idea why it would have taken up so much hard drive space in the first place though.
