Ever restore an old Mac (Core Duo) to a new mac (Core 2 Duo)?

I recently sold my old first gen MBP and bought a new MBP. It should arrive Thursday. Now, the question I have is, can I just use the System Restore feature from the System Disc to restore all my applications from my Time Machine backup(notably, Adobe CS, MS Office, iWork), or will there be any issues with the fact that the old Mac was 32 bit, and the new one is 64? Will there be any other issues, like with Creative Suite, for example, and it's registration? Doing that the first time was a pain in the backside. I am not looking forward to digging these disks out of storage (have moved twice since I installed all of this, so it is SERIOUSLY buried in a mountain of junk) and doing it again. I really need to buy the newer versions of these apps, but after putting out 3k for the laptop, my wife will kill me if I spend another $1000). Has anyone done this? Any advice? I am thinking of trying it, see how it works, and if it goes poorly, start from scratch.
Cheers

New MacBook Pro arrived today. I tried to use the Time Machine back up directly attached to the mac via USB, and it failed over and over. It recognized it was a time machine back up, but still failed with the message "Not a valid Time Machine Backup". I finally skipped the restore, set up the mac, then used the Migration Assistant to do the same thing, and this time it worked like a charm. Everything, including Photoshop, worked great, EXCEPT, that I forgot to de-authorize my old iTunes account, and some iPhone apps didn't want to move to the mac. They run fine on the iPhone still tho.

  • Restoring an old Mac mini

I recently purchased an old (as in old enough to have a PowerPC processor) Mac mini from an auction online, I'm not sure specifically what model it is. I'm wondering if it's possible to restore it to it's factory settings without any install disks, as none were included with the purchase. The computer came with all the previous owners data, and I'm thinking the easiest way to really make the computer mine is to restore it. Is there anybody around who can help me out?
    Any help much appreciated,
    from a huge Mac newbie

You can call Apple support (in the US 800-275-2273) see if they still have the original OS X disks that shipped with your mini. They would be include OS X Tiger 10.4, and would include the iLife programs.  One reason to get these is that they include the Apple hardware test, which isn't available elsewhere. A similar test program is TechTool Pro which does testing, and more.
The lastest operating system your mini can run is OS X 10.5 Leopard, which Apple no longer sells. In the US, one source of unopened Apple software is http://www.hardcoremac.com . If you buy the operating system, it will not include the iLife programs, which would need to be bought separately.

  • Getting a New Macbook, will restoring from Old Mac make it slow??

    Hello!
Ive had my Macbook since early 08 and am finally going to get a new one! This one is quite slow, it takes forever to "think", the rainbow ball is spins a lot. I currently use time machine to back up my macbook, and have a few questions: If I load my current hd onto the new Macbook, will it be slow like this one? Once I get a new macbook, I will erase the content on this one, will it still be slow? It has a new, large hard drive, so Im not sure why its so slow! Is this the processor slowing down? Im not too computer savvy
    Thank you!

Read this and choose what you think serves your interests best:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/Setup.html
It is best to reinstall non Apple applications later.  You should be able to install a new OS at anytime you choose without any affect in your data.  With that said, always have a backup.
    Ciao.

  • How do you restore your old iphone 4 contacts to your new iphone 4?

I recently brought my old iphone 4 to the apple store for hardware repair and they simply gave me a new one. I backed up my old iphone4 settings into itunes but when I plugged in my new iphone 4 into itunes, it asked me to register a new phone. Are my contacts forever lost? Was there not suppose to be a restore from backup option?

  • Cant restore my old IPAD data on to my new IPAD

    Hi All,
Just got a new IPAD 3 in the post because my old one was having problems with the home button. My iCloud backups are all up to date, on new IPAD 3 i did the initial setup and chose to restore from iCloud backup and it says no backups available.
I have since set the ipad up as a new device, gone into iCloud settings and I can see my old backup listed.
How do I restore the backup on to my new IPAD????
    Dave

First be sure that the new iPad is running the same or higher level of iOS as the one you backed up.  If it's running a lower iOS you won't be able to restore to the backup.  Then go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Erase All Content and Settings, go back through the setup screens on the iPad, and when given the option, choose Restore to iCloud Backup.  You may want to be sure it's connected to your charger as this will take some time to complete.

When I try to restore my old Mac, which I am preparing to sell, using the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Install DVD (OS X 10.6.8), I hear the optical disc drive spin up and down, then the disc is ejected.  This is the same thing that happens with its original OS X Install DVD, which was OS X 10.4.9.

  • All of my extensions, and add-ons were deleted overnight. I can't find an old firefox data folder to restore my old profile

Firefox deleted all of my extensions and add-ons overnight. None of the fixes I've found work, I need help restoring my old profile

Did you only lose the extension or did you lose other personal data and settings as well?
You would normally only lose the extensions if you create a new profile folder, either via a reset/refresh or possibly because of problems with the profiles.ini file.
With a reset you would have an "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop.

I only lost the extensions. I left the PC on to do a steam download overnight. When I woke up and opened up the browser it was in base mode. All of my tabs, saved data were present. I looked for the Old Firefox Data folder then, but it isn't there.

  • I bought a 5 yr old Mac G5 OSx 10.4.11, 2 GHz intel Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB 667 MHz DDR1 SDRAM memory.  It works fine but I can't get Thunderbird, Flash Player or Adobe reader to install -- it shows up on desktop as download but not App folder. Why?

Question:  I bought a 5 yr old Mac G5 OSx 10.4.11, 2 GHz intel Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB 667 MHz DDR1 SDRAM memory.  It works fine but I can't get Thunderbird, Flash Player or Adobe reader to install -- it shows up on desktop as download but not App folder. Why?

The downloads are probably .dmg files (disk images).  You would open the disk image (double-click it) to find the application or an installer.  If it's the application itself, you then drag the application to your Applications folder to "install" it.  If it's an installer, double-click the installer to run the installer that installs the application.
NOTE:  If you iMac is Intel, it's not a PPC G5.

  • How can I create a start up disk for a old intel core duo running 10.5.8.. Computer works fine, but can't find install disk.

How can I create a start up disk for a old intel core duo running 10.5.8.. Computer works fine, but can't find install disk. Want to use internal disk drive or USD flash drive.

Try calling 1-800-676-2775.  Give the serial number and thy *may* still burn you new install disks designed just for the hrdware in your system (for a fee, something like $160 per disk).  *May* is only because they may not burn disks for Leopard anymore.
If they do not burn them for you, you can buy Leopard disks off Amazon or eBay for about $200.
Have you considered Snow Leopard?.  Those disks only cost $19 (single user) or $29 (5-user license) through Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE.

I have Photoshop Elements 10 on a new Mac, using Yosemite 10.1.1 - PE locks up every time I try to sign in. This software was restored to this computer from Time Machine after a theft of my old Mac. How can I fix this? It keeps telling me that there are missing files, too. If I upgrade to Elements 12 or beyond, will this fix the problem?

You can't sign in because there is nothing to sign in to. For PSE 10 the only sign in was to photoshop.com, which has been dead and gone for a year and half. Just skip the sign in. Reinstalling will not change this.
    PSE 8, 9, 10 Can’t Sign In, Error 404 | Barbara's Sort-of-Tech Blog
PSE is locking up because it's looking interminably for the non-existent photoshop.com server.

  • Restore from an old Mac

If I want to restore my files from an old Mac to a new one, do I have to restore everything in my account or could I sellect which files and aplications to copy?
Can I choose, for example to copy only the Mail and iTunes' files or do I have to restore the whole Home account?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Becki ..
You need to "authorize" the Mac.
Launch iTunes on the Mac then from the iTunes menu bar top of your screen click Store > Authorize This Computer.
Now, using the same Apple ID as you used to purchased iTunes media originally, you should be able to sync all your content.

  • Switching an old dual 1.8 to a new mac pro 8 core questions

    hi
Tomorrow i am getting a new Mac Pro 8 core 2.8, the basic model, 2 gigs ram (for now) and the on 320 gig HD. I am not a great mac person, i used my old one for some final cut express stuff and that was about it. so i was wondering if someone could answer these questions for me
    1) will final cut HD load fine on the new one in terms of licenses? in that, will that license or serial number i have used on the old one be ok on the new one?
    - same things for aperture, these are really the only 2 programs i have and really need on the new one, till i move up to final cut full
    2) i have an older "projects" western digital HD with the projects, pics etc on it, can i swap that HD into one of the new slots till i get another newer drive? its sata, but i am not sure what speed?? its probably 3 years old now
    3) what exactly does the new mac pro come with?? in the apple store it really doesn't go into it, i have ilife 05 on my old one, is it worth getting the new one? does it come with things like that?
    4) i mainly do home movie's and video editing on my mac, if i end up with final cut studio 2 i think it is, what is the recommended RAM?
    5) where is the best place to buy more RAM and HD's for the mac? i will need or want 3 more 500 gig min, 7200 speed drives and probably 2-6gigs more ram.
ok, that should confuse me pretty well for a while
    thanks for any help!

    1. As long as the software is not installed on more than one CPU you are not in violation of the software license. You will use the same serial number.
    2. Any SATA drive can be installed in the computer.
    3. New computers come with OS X and iLife pre-installed. Also trial versions of iWork, MS Office, and Quicken's Quick Books.
    4. I would recommend at least 4 GBs of RAM.
    5. You can buy RAM from any online vendor that has the proper type of RAM with the proper heat sinks. Suitable vendors are Data Mem and MacSales.com. Hard drives are available at any number of online vendors such as:
    MacSales.com
    Buy.com
    NewEgg.com

  • Can I still use my "old" Mac after restoring Time Machine backup to a new Mac?

    Hi guys.
Will I still be able to use my old Macbook Pro 2008 (Leopard) after restoring his latest Time Machine backup on a new Macbook Pro 2012 (Lion)?
Using Setup Assistant and transfering data using Time Machine creats the same Account on the new machine that was on the old one. I just don't know how the old machine will react towards his clone. I don't want to make a mess...
    Please let me know.
    Thanks

It should work if the drive is connected directly to your Mac. That is not the same as saying that it will work.
Since Mountain Lion was just released, it might make sense to hold on a few weeks and watch the forums for new and unforeseen issues before you dive in.

First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.
