Ever seen this display problem? (pictures inside)

After playing Team Fortress 2 in Windows XP off Boot Camp for an hour or two, I restart my computer back into OSX to find my screen looking like this:
http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/6320/0830091006.jpg
When it should look like this:
http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/5779/0830091007.jpg
It is fixed by resetting the PRAM on restart (holding, alt + apple key + P + R before apple icon appears on start up.) It goes away every time... but I'd like for it to never happen because I feel like resetting my PRAM once every few days is not good for my Macbook Pro.
I looked through the display anomalies thread, but could not find any pictures of people's display problems looking like mine. Although, I think it may have to do with what was plaguing other people... which is overheating?

I think I found something similar:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7210908#7210908
The anomaly there looks very similar, and the cure seems to be to reset the PRAM. Something you have already figured out to do.
If you had the later graphics chip, you would be covered by this program:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
However, there is no such program for your graphics chip as far as I know.
There were some speculations that the problem was worse in some versions of Leopard than in others, but I think nothing was ever definitive. Heat could be a factor if you had just finished a processor intensive activity like a game. Have you tried letting the Mac cool down before restarting in Mac OS X?
A true graphics chip problem should affect both Windows and Mac OS X, and this one seems to just affect Mac OS X for some reason. So my guess is that the chip itself is OK.
Don't know if this is much help, but you're not alone.
Good luck!

  • Has anyone seen this display problem?

I even changed my video card and still had the same issue? has anyone seen this or know how to fix this issue?
I tried to show a screen capture but didnt have any luck but the issue is alot of my icons are showing pink lines on them and when in certain application and safari the pictures are showing up all pixelated with pink and green pixels instead of displaying the correct image? is it possible the AGP slot is bad? i just upgraded to 10.5.8 hoping to correct the problem but no luck. Also this is a Power PC 1.8 ghz.
    Thank You

I wasn't notified that you asked me a question or that there was a new post on this topic. I should have been, that bugs me.
    Anyhow... Mr. Ah
The problem that some people, mostly with a certain video card, were having was when they updated from 10.5.4 to 10.5.5. For many of them the problem went away when they went through the hassle of reverting back to 10.5.4.
Did you +just recently+ update to 10.5.5? If you have, then their fix is for you too, going back to 10.5.4. If you have had 10.5.5 installed for a while now, and this just started happening, chances are good that it is your video card, or perhaps something affecting it like dust and dirt like DP says above.
If you have another start up drive, firewire or internal, and you had enough space on it you might consider installing a previous OS 10.5 on there and start up from it. If the problem went away you would know it's 10.5.5. Perhaps even if you started up from your OS disc the problem might go away and again you'd know it was 10.5.5. Apple was made aware of the problem on some machines and said they were going to come out with a fix, but I don't think they ever did.
Post back and say what the situation is, especially if you just recently updated to 10.5.5.
And post back with what kind of G5 you have, look in the "About this Mac" window.
Your card may be dying, but on the other hand it might be as easy as pulling it out, blowing it out, and putting the card back in again.

  • Has Anyone Seen This Display Problem Before?

This is a picture of the display from my sister's Power Mac G5. She installed 10.5.5 from the software update today. She said she was editing a document in Pages and all of a sudden it displayed this weird color pattern.

The Mac is a Power Mac G5 late 2003 dual 2.0 GHz with an ATI X800 XT 256MB Graphics card.

  • Anyone Ever Seen This Before?

    Hello,
Has anyone ever seen this before: http://digitalmarketing1.com/MacErrorPicture.jpg
Running an IMac Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz, Microsoft Entourage 2004 for Mac v 11.3.6.
Opened Entourage and selected some of the tons of spam > hit Delete and there you have it! Wasn't really sure how to answer this one! It was like a Bill Gates trick question for Mac users. I had to have someone else come in the office to make sure I wasn't having a stroke or something.
I did eventually select the highlighted button after a coin flip, but to no avail. Nothing happened. Selected the other button then thinking that MUST be the right answer! Nothing...
Finally, an end task was the right answer. Seems to have gone away for now, but Entourage still crashes quite often. Rebuilt email, repaired permissions, etc. Nothing appears to be wrong, but clearly something was amiss.
    Any ideas?

An unexpected exception has been detected in native
    code outside the VM.
    Unexpected Signal : EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION
    occurred at PC=0x92150b9
    Function name=(N/A)
I get this error when I call the same native function
twice.Yes, many people have seen it many times when doing JNI.
    The usual reasons;
-In the vast majority of cases (think 99.9%) there is a bug in the C/C++ code that does JNI. As usual a pointer is the problem.
-Very, very rarely there might be a problem with something else. Like the jvm or a third party library.

Well Tyler....I've seen something like your problem before, but i'm afraid i can't be of much help. I saw the problem because it happened to me before, and my iPod needed to be sent into Apple for repair, i believe they need to reconnect the hard drive on it....well hopefully someone here can help you out, because mine was a matter of being sent in.

    Hi pholewinski!
I have a couple of articles for you here that I believe will help you with this issue. The first is an article on advanced troubleshooting, and it can be found here:
    iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3297
If following that article's steps doesn't take care of the issue, you can try the things listed in this article, which is about permissions issues in iTunes:
iTunes: Missing folder or incorrect permissions may prevent authorization

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Have a good one!

  • Has anyone ever seen this error

We just launched a vaccation tracking app with a coldfusion
front end and an access 97 backend (dont ask). The app was tested
for over a month and passed all tests. However we never tested for
volume, or amount of users hitting the app. On the backend, we have
an access table linked to a text file. Again, this tested out
perfectly over the past month. This morning after release to the
entire company of about 2,000 people, users began reporting this
    error:
The text file specification 'EmployeeList Link
Specification6' does not exist. You cannot import, export, or link
    using the specification.
Some users logged in to the app successfully and some
recieved this error. For those that recieved the error, we had them
back out and re-login and then the app worked just fine.
Has anyone ever seen this or have a guess as to what is going
    on?

    Hi,
The right way would be to use a "real" database server.
But you can test if db-caching can improve the issue.
With each <cfquery> you can set a cachedwithin
parameter. Using that should allow you to query the Access db once,
and then have CF keep the query results in memory (for the DB as
    well as the text-file).
You could query the complete database with no filtering this
way, and then filter the data using QueryofQuery to output only
    records for specific users/groups/regions.
You also need to make sure the settings in CF admin are
    configured right for this.
The more often the database content is updated, the slower
    this solution will get though.
    cheers,
    fober
ps. for the cachedwithin parameter in the query set a
timeframe of forever, so the recordset never gets updated, and then
actually execute a new query to update the recordset at the end of
your "save a vacation" or "updated a vacation" functions. This way
the app would only read the db when a real change to the records
    occurred.
But like I said with 2000 users, even that may not be enough
    to get the app performing.

  • New 20" iMac Dual - anyone seen this video problem?

My CTO iMac arrived this morning. Specs are: 20"/2.0/256MBVRAM/2GB/500GB. I migrated everything (files, apps, settings, etc) from my 1.67GHz PB. Shortly after that, I tried Front Row for the first time. Almost immediately, I noticed a problem. Rather than try to explain it, I captured it on video and posted with iWeb. Here's the link:
    http://web.mac.com/jchiusano/iWeb
I haven't seen this anywhere else but in Front Row. I tried playing the same episode of The Office with QT in Full-Screen view and none of those things showed up. General use (browsing, playing with iMovie and iWeb, etc) didn't show the problem either. The lack of it appearing elsewhere would seem to point to an issue specific to Front Row but I haven't been able to play with the system all that extensively as I just got it this morning. I'm hoping it's not a video card problem but it very well could be.
    Any thoughts?
    Jeff

Yep, regular DVD player was fine but playback in Front Row displayed the same issues. I forgot to use the tearing term in my initial post as that describes the behavior accurately. If memory serves me correctly, I have a faint recollection of another Mac having a tearing video issue in the past.
As for this specifc problem, it's almost as if the Front Row overlay interface is the culprit. The reason why I say this is because I tried reproducing the issue a couple of times after separate reboots. In one case, it didn't appear initially when playing that same episode of The Office. However, as soon as I hit the volume button on the remote and the Front Row volume overlay popped up, the tearing problem reappeared. Maybe it's just a Front Row problem after all.

  • Has anyone ever seen this happen to a macbook pro screen before?

I'm going to try and include a pic of this . Suddenly, It seems like the bulb that lights the apple logo on the top of the case has burned through the lcd display, resulting in what looks like a freshly lit kitchen match right in the middle of my screen. This macbook is only 4 months old and will be going back to apple for a screen replacement. The apple tech guy that I spoke with on the phone said that there are no previous records of this occuring before. /Users/john/Pictures/IMG1101.JPG/Users/john/Pictures/IMG1102.JPG

OK... I uploaded photos to photobucket. See if this works

  • Can you diagnosis this display problem?

When I boot up my old MBP the display begins to populate with rectangles and boxes that look as if they consist of video noise. Eventually (sometimes very quickly) it becomes apparent that the shapes are laid out on diagonal lines, and completely occupy the screen.
It is not possible to use the cursor to select icons that are in near or under these shapes. If I attach an external display it too has this issue.
I was running Leopard but I've wiped the hard-drive trying to eliminate variables. No difference.
Happy to send a photo if necessary.
    Thanks!

I have an original MacBook Pro 15" that I bought in August 2006. The EXACT same problem you are experiencing happened to me yesterday. I tried connecting it to external displays too with no luck. Today I took it to a local Mac dealership that has technicians on site to diagnose the problem and hopefully fix it.
Trouble is, given the age of my machine it is out of warranty and if it is the NVIDIA card issue I won't be eligible for a free replacement.
I am waiting for the call from the technician to give me the damage report.
I have used this laptop everyday all day for the last 3 years and had no problems with it. Did you get yours repaired or diagnosed at least?
    Thanks!

  • Any Ozone/Ozonic users ever seen this before?

So I just got an M-Audio Ozonic FireWire Interface/MIDI Controller to use with Logic 7.2. Everything works great except for the following strange problem:
The Ozonic has a total of 4 inputs and 4 outputs cabled like this:
Input 1 = Balanced XLR input - Shure SM58 Mic connected
Input 2 = Balanced TRS 1/4" input - Guitar connected
Input 3 = Unbalanced Line input TRS 1/4" - UNUSED
Input 4= Unbalanced Line Input TRS 1/4" - UNUSED
Outputs 1 & 2 = going to my powered monitors
    Outputs 3 & 4 = UNUSED
Sounds simple, right? Now here's the problem:
With my mic plugged into input 1 and my guitar plugged into input 2, I can clearly HEAR the output of both inputs in my monitors; also, when looking at the M-Audio software mixer or the Ozonic's physical LED's, I can see the mic as INPUT 1 and the guitar as INPUT 2, which matches exactly with how everything is cabled up. I replicated this in the Logic Environment by creating 4 separate Audio Objects - one for each input 1 thru 4 - and setting the output of each to OUTPUT 1-2.
However, inside Logic, a strange thing happens: when I play the MIC plugged into INPUT 1, it shows up in Logic as INPUT 3. Similarly, the Guitar plugged into INPUT 2 shows up in Logic as INPUT 4. When I plug them into Line Inputs 3 & 4, Logic sees them as INPUTS 1 & 2! So for all intents and purposes, the Ozonic seems to be working fine, but for some reason, Logic seems to cross INPUTS 1 & 2 with INPUTS 3 & 4, even though all indicators outside Logic point to the contrary. I've been over the audio setup within my Environment many many times and I can't see any reason why this is happening. It's not a huge deal since all the inputs do work, but it seriously bugs me trying to figure out where the cross-up is.
Has this happened before for any other Ozone/Ozonic users? Or have I got something screwed up in my environment?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Ken
MacBook Pro "LAILA" - 2.16 GHz MBP, 2 GB, 256 MB VRAM, 100 GB/7200 RPM HD   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

First, make sure you have the latest drivers for the Ozonic installed. As of this writing, the latest version is 1.7. It also updates the firmware in Ozonic.
In order to single out the problem, go to Audio/MIDI setup (Applications/Utilities) and set Properties For: to Ozonic Multichannel. You will see two sets of four sliders and mute checkboxes, one of the input and one for the output. Now mute, say, input #2. If the guitar disappears, then the problem is with the environment layer in Logic (make sure you have the Monitor Level knob on the unit turned all the way to the left).

  • Display problem: Hair INSIDE the LCD

not exactly sure how this happened... or if my problem is actually a hair or an uncannily hairlike row of dead pixels, but there is a dark arc in the lower right hand corner of my screen, about 13mm from the right side that wasn't there yesterday.
    I have several questions:
Is such a problem covered under the 1 year warranty of the powerbook?
How does one go about making a warranty claim with apple? (i've never had a single problem with an apple product that i couldn't fix before this)
What is the turnaround rate if apple can in fact fix my problem? (i'm a student and any time without my machine is bad)

This will definitely be covered under warranty as the panel is supposed to be sealed.
Apple can be pretty good about turn around time on these types of repairs. Plan to be without it for a week, including shipping time.
