Ever since snow leopard my external drive keeps disconnecting

i love airport base station extreme- it worked well for years. i get snow leopard (which is also great), but- now my external keeps disconnecting. i have it partitioned for time machine as well. but now it keeps disconnecting after five or six minutes. any help?

I am experiencing the same issue. I lost a complete hard drive volume due to this situation. About 2 years of data down the tubes and unrecoverable through Drive Mechanic 3 and other sources.
Please Apple, look into this as I am about ready to downgrade back to Leopard to prevent this. I thought it was my firewire enclosure but it turns out it is doing it with my USB mounted drives as well.
Both drives have been plugged in to external power by the wall plug and not bus powered so that would not be a cause for them to disconnect in terms of the bus powering them down.

  • Why can't brand new MacBookPro9,1 (OEM Mountain-Lion) boot from Snow Leopard on external drive, or internal partition?

Why can't brand new MacBookPro9,1 (OEM Mountain-Lion) boot from Snow Leopard on external drive, or internal partition?
Is this because of hardware changes? Or firmware changes? Or is it just and Apple Inc. administrative fiat?

@Steve Holton: Sorry Steve, but you're wrong about that one . I'm using 10.8 (purchased and downloaded) on the internal HD of this MBP8,3 (2.2 GHz, 17"), and I am also able to boot into 10.7.4 and 10.6.8 from external FW800 partitions.
However, I DO have problems with my MBP9,1. It came with 10.7.4 installed and ran fine. Then I purchased and installed 10.8. It ran fine but could no longer boot from 10.7.4 on an external partition. I then reinstalled 10.7.4 on the internal HD and discovered that it is still unable to boot (even 10.7.4) from an external FW800 partition.
One of Apple's Senior Support Advisors has done some remote troubleshooting but the case is still open and unresolved. An earlier Apple Support case suggested that when, I installed the downloaded copy of 10.8, there had been a "firmware update" (behind the scenes) that is now causing the problems with booting from my external partition(s). This apparently is "a bug": it is not what is supposed to happen.
So - I believe - "the problem" really has nothing to do with hardware capability. It is strictly about Apple's strategy for "managing its future customer base". If you don't like it - use something else - I am seriously considering Ubuntu as an alternative.
If there's a hidden caveat in all this it's probably "Read Appple's Licence Agreement VERY Carefully".

  • Can't Install Snow Leopard on external drive

    Hey Mac Addicts,
I'm trying to install Snow Leopard on an external drive (Lacie Triple Rugged, FW800 USB3.0)  but keep on getting "Installation failed, can't copy the support files.
My drive is partioned in to 5x100GB partitions, GUID partition scheme. I boot from my installation disk, choose my partition and hit install. The DVD spins and spins and eventually give me a failure. I've tried not installing the custom options (Quicktime 7, Rosetta and have even unchecked X11) but still get the same.
The MacBook Pro I'm trying this from is running 10.6.8 and previous successful attempts at doing this were from 10.6.4, I'm thinking this is the issue, but would rather not have to clean install my machine and try again.
If anybody has any idea's that'll be marvellous, as I am a little confused and lost, especially as I've done this before.
All the best and thanks in advance.
    BigMik

    Two things,
    1: Use FIrewire
2: Use Disk Utility to first Erase with Security Option Zero All Data, the entire drive, then setup the partitions
3: If it doesn't work, then increase the size of the 10.6 parittion or reducing the partitions until it works.
4: Also do all this from the Disk Utility on the internal drive, then try again from the 10.6 install disk. Apple might have pulled something.
Also you can clone your present OS X 10.6 partition using the donationware Carbon Copy Cloner, however the external partition needs to be large enough for all the contents (recommended)

  • Can't boot snow leopard from external drive

I have a copy of snow leopard installed on a separate usb hard drive which I use to run some PowerPC programmes under rosetta. I can attach this USB drive to my Mac Pro and also to an Intel Macbook and choose to start up on this external drive without any issues. However when I try restarting my new 2011 iMac on this external usb drive the machine crashes every time with a kernal panic. Is this problem unique to me or does everyone else have this issue with new iMacs. Mine is a 27" 3.4ghz i& with 12ghb ram installed running 10.72. Is their soemthing I can do to resolve this problem?

I have now solved the problem of being able to boot from either Snow Leopard or Lion on a new Mid 2011 iMac. This is how I did it.
    1. Attach an external USB drive to an earlier Mac or borrow one from a friend. In my case I used my 2009 Unibody Macbook (which has Lion installed on it but does allow you to install Snow Leopard on an attached device) Put the Snow Leopard install disc in this machine and tell it to install Snow Leopard on your attached USB Drive.
    2. Start up the Macbook (or whatever machine you are using) and get it to restart on the attached USB drive so that it boots up in Snow Leopard. Then when Snow Leopard is up and running on the attached external drive, do a software update to bring it up to 10.68 (the current version). This step is important as I found that if I plugged in the external USB drive into the iMac with only operating system 10.6 installed it would cause a kernal panic on start up when I choose to start up on the external USB drive.
    3. With Snow Leopard updated to system 10.68 you can now plug it into your iMac and restart the iMac booting into Snow Leopard from the external USB drive. You do this by either going to System Preferences>Startup disk and choosing the external drive, or by holding down the option key when you restart your Mac and choosing the external USB drive.
    4. The next step is to make your iMac dual boot now that you know it can run Snow Leopard successfully from an external USB drive. To do this, go into Utilities>Disk Utility and select your main drive. Select the main disk (with Lion on it)  and then choose Partition and choose 2 Partitions. Drag the first partition bundary line down to make the second partition size as small as possible. In my case I had a stock 1TB drive and the smallest partition size it would allow me was 70gb. Create the second partition (assuming you have spare space on your drive to allow this to happen). This will then create a second hard drive icon on your desktop. I renamed mine "Snow Leopard startup".
    5. Download the free (and excellent) utility Carbon Copy Cloner and use it to copy your Snow Leopard operating sytem from your attached USB external drive to your new partition.
    6. That's it! Now you can choose to start up your iMac from either Lion or Snow Leopard using either method mentioned in 3 above.
    7. As a final step I suggest your install your Rosetta only programmes in your new Snow Leopard partition so that you can access them easily and keep them all together.

  • Cannot install Snow Leopard onto external drive

I'm attempting to install Snow Leopard on a second drive, an external bare drive in an Icy Dock enclosure connected to a MacPro (running 10.6.6) via serial port. Apple Disc Utility confirms that the external drive (a Seagate 325gb) has a partition map scheme GUID Partition Table. SMART Status is not supported. Connection Bus reads as SCSI but it's connected with a serial cable.
I'm able to perform the first part of the install by selecting the external drive but when I have to restart and complete the install from the original Snow Leopard disc (10.6), the external drive no longer shows up. I've tried several times and have restarted the Icy Dock external drive enclosure.
    Any ideas? Thank you.

Not necessarily. Use a backup utility so that you can deselect all the data from within your Home folder as well as third-party applications in order to create a bootable disk but without some of the excess. Any of the following should be suitable:
    Backup Software Recommendations
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup

  • Installing OS X Snow Leopard on External Drive Error

    Hey,
I recently upgraded my Late 2010 MBP to OS X Lion and am trying to install OS X Snow Leopard onto an external hard drive and keep getting a strange error message.
You can't use this version of the application Install Mac OS X with this version of Mac OS X.
You have install Mac OS X 23.1
I'm using a Snow Leopard disk which I got from Apple.
Any thoughts on how I can get around this?

    Had no luck,
Mac just sat loading for a few minutes and kept getting the "Your computer needs to restart. Hold down the power button" message.
    Any other thoughts?
Disk is clean, no scratches and opens up perfectly in Finder.

  • Problems w/MS Office 2008 & Google Earth Ever Since Snow Leopard "Upgrade"

I probably should have checked this forum before taking my son's advice to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6. Ever since this upgrade, I've had repeated and frustrating problems with two applications: MS Office 2008 for the Mac and Google Earth for the Mac.
Note that I did an "in-place" upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard, i.e., I inserted the installation DVD into my iMac and then double-clicked on "Install Mac OS X".
Office 2008: Ever since the Snow Leopard upgrade, MS Office 2008 has been crashing. Typically, it's Entourage crashing when a crash does occur because that's the office app that I run 95% of the time. However, whenever Entourage crashes and I try to launch Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, they won't launch either... The icons will bounce a few times in the dock but won't run. (The Entourage crash is the only Office App that actually generates a crash window.) Note that there are two identities configured on my iMac, both of which which use Entourage. The key thing about this situation is that when the Office 2008 crash does occur, restarting the iMac ALWAYS resolves the problem until the next time a crash occurs. I've tried to determine what combination of events, i.e., apps open/being used in either/both identities, etc. is the trigger, but I can't find anything obvious. Sometimes I can use the iMac for a whole day without a crash, but that's unusual. If Entourage is left open in both identities, maybe a couple of days will pass without a crash, but invariably it happens again, and then it's reboot time again. In cases where Entourage is left running (in one or both identities), we will still eventually get a crash in one of them if one of us tries to open a WinWord attachment (with a "Not enough memory to run Word" error). If at that point I close Entourage and try to restart it, it crashes. I've tried everything I could find on the Office for the Mac forums, including deleting duplicate fonts, doing a safe start-up, fixing disk permissions via Disk Utility, zapping the PRAM, turning filing sharing off then on (including deleting everything listed in the Shared Folders section), logging out/logging back in, etc., all to no avail. One of the Office 2008 for the Mac forum contributors suggested that the problem was with my Snow Leopard Install, but then a contributor to another more general Apple forum blames Office for Mac. (This is exactly the sort of finger-pointing exercise that I'd hoped to avoid when I made the plunge from being a long-time Windows user to becoming an OS X user...; - )
Google Earth: This just flat-out WILL NOT RUN ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard. When I try to run it, it bounces in the dock for about a minute then just stops, staying fixed to the dock until I do a Force-Quit. (I don't have it permanently tethered to the dock since I only use it occasionally.) I've tried deleting/reinstalling, including Google Earth's suggestions to remove files from my identity's Google Earth folder in the Library folder, but no dice.
My take on all of this is that despite all of Apple's advertising to the contrary, their OS (including updates to their OS) isn't necessarily as trouble-free/stable as their anti-Windows spots would have you believe. Sorry for this long post, but any help would be much appreciated.

I left my system running all day in 64-bit kernel mode. (I left Entourage running the whole time.) Just now closed Entourage and tried reopening it. Same deal with Google Earth. They both crashed. Here's a screen paste of the entire Microsoft crash log for Entourage:

  • Testing Leopard on External Drive/Keeping Tiger on Internal-Any Problems?

I am currently running Tiger 10.4.11 on my internal HD and I want to install Leopard on an external drive to test it against my applications before I commit to making the switch.
Are there any problems, concerns and/or precautions I need to be aware of or take when installing Leopard to the external drive? I have SuperDuper which has cloned my Tiger drive.
Once I've installed Leopard is there anything I should be aware of when booting Leopard off of the external drive and running my applications on the data that is on my internal HD?
    Thanks

No real issues. Just be sure your external HDD is partitioned with a GUID scheme, not Apple Partition Map (check that in Disk Utility).
    Hope this helps...

  • After upgrade to Snow Leopard, my external drives do not mount...WHY?

I have spent most of this morning trying to find an answer to why my external hard drives are not mounting in 10.6.1. I have never had a problem with these drives (4 firewire drives). Not one of the will mo0nt. They do not show up under Disk Utilities either. these forums never get to the point and this is very frustratiing. I am not new to mac, I have used a mac since 1989 - never have I had a problem like this. And it seems like others are having the same problems to varying degrees. Why is there no clear answers to fix this? HELP? I need to get to my client files.

If they are Firewire, read on.......
Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that didn't work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
If that still didn't get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
A bad internal PRAM battery can also cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work.
    Here's another Fw Faq.

  • Snow Leopard on External Drive

    Hello guys,
This is an issue that I have and the simplest option to resolve it is the one that I cannot afford for the moment. I'm a Pro Tools user and unfortunately I found out the hard way that the Pro Tools 8 version I have does not work with Mountain Lion which I just installed on my Mac Pro not too long ago. Since I don't use Pro Tools that often, I didn't do the required research before installing 10.8 simply because I'm a graphic designer and photgrapher first. That said, I don't even have an ungrade option. I will have to purchase Pro Tools 11 at $699. Yikes!
So my question is, is it possible to install 10.6 on an external HD and start up my computer from it. If so, can I re-install Pro Tools 8 in that same HD like if it was the internal drive? So I will have my internal drive with 10.8 and the external with 10.6 so I can use Pro Tools 8. Make sense? Will the compter work like if it was operating from the internal drive?
    Thanks,
    Luis

That would be the best solution. Then it should be the same as far as disks go for either operating system.
I had failed to ask about tha earlier. Sorry.

  • Seagate Expansion 2 TB External USB drive keeps disconnecting

    Hi,
I just attached a nearly new Seagate 2 TB Expansion USB external drive to my iMac running Snow Leopard, as a Time Machine drive.
The drive sits idle until Time Machine does a backup. However, the drive keeps disconnecting momentarily - I get the "your drive was not ejected properly" error message, the drive icon disappears for a few seconds, and then the drive reconnects by itself. Happens several times an hour.
Is this a known glitch? Do I need to replace the drive (it's under warranty, but still a bit of a nuisance)?

  • Snow Leopard on external?

I recently loaded Snow Leopard on a 2TB G-Tech external drive, to use as a backup system, but my iMac wouldn't start-up from it. I re-formatted the drive using disk utility (GUID, 1 partition, Mac OS, Extended (Journaled)), re-installed Snow Leopard with the drive connected directly using a firewire 800 connection and the system still doesn't recognize the drive as bootable. I can see the drive. I can see that the system was installed on it, but when I hold the option key down at boot-up, it doesn't show up in the list. And when I configure it as the start-up drive, through system prefs, I just get a grey screen and it won't reboot.
This should be really simple but something is awry, any suggestions?

Thanks for all of your responses. I've explained why CCC or SD are not of interest to me. I have CCC, but I don't need to waste space by copying 500GB to this drive as a clone of my main drive. I would simply like to have a drive with a system on it, in case my main drive ever fails. Then I can switch over to the external and troubleshoot the main drive without having to take it in to Apple. The point of this discussion is, WHY is this disk not bootable? It should have been bootable directly from the box. It should have become bootable after I used disk utility and re-formatted with the GUID partition, but it's not?
Lion is coming and therefore it most likely won't matter in the long run but, I just don't understand why it doesn't work.
I switched back to the firewire 800 cable and I have resumed my ability to copy files to the drive.
Lex, you make a good point regarding partitioning the drive. I may consider partitioning it in the end, as I do intend to run Time Machine on it.

  • Is snow leopard usb backup drive access much much quicker using firewire than with usb 2.0 ?

is snow leopard usb backup drive access much much quicker using firewire than with usb 2.0 ?

I migrated from a USB2 external hard drive (when it failed) to the Firewire 800 and have not looked back.  I also sync from that primary drive to a secondary backup drive (still USB2).  Everything I do with the firewire drive is significantly faster than USB2.

  • My iphone external hard drive keeps disconnecting so it tells me I disconnected improperly. I have changed electric cord directly to outlet and usb also direct, and it still happens.

I store ALL my photos (400 events) on an external 1T hard drive. The hard drive keeps disconnecting so it get a msg telling me I disconnected improperly basically which is a serious no no. I then have to re-start. I have tried connecting directly to the wall outlet, to a super duper surge protector and also have connected the usb (was on a usb port) directly to the computer. But it continues to happen a total nusance. What do I do?

I would first contact  Seagate's tech support for a possible solution. If that doesn't prove successful then I would try a different product or consider building your own.
    Basic Backup
Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    Silver Keeper
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.
