Everio cameras and imovie

Can anyone tell me if there is a way of using my JVC everio video camera with imovieHD ? When i connect it to my mac it says there is no camera attached. Has anyone elso bought this potentially very annoying peice of the future of video and had success with it?????

Since your camera doesn't record to tape or DVD, but instead to a 4GB Microdrive, movies are saved in MPEG-2 format.
In order to use these in iMovie you will need to convert them.

  • New problem with camera and imovie 08

i have two questions already posted about my camera not being found by imovie 08 except that it did it the first time and wouldn't any time after that.
well here's the new problem. as i'm sitting here trying to find some other post that could help me with my dilemna imovie opens and shows my impost screen but says "communication error". with my first joy and imovie working again came confusion about this error. the error makes it so i cannot import video because the next "error" that comes up says my camera is disconnected or off but even this is farther than i've gotten in weeks. i don't know what this error means and i still can't import video. anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this?

    Hi
    Test another FW-Cable.
Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
Toogle in iMovie pref: Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape:
Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Exchange formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)
    What Camcorder ?
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    Using WHAT ? :
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? (Others don't count)
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into
    this and have a re-try.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

    connect camera, on, playback, fw-connected...

  • Time differences between camera and iMovie

    Hi,
When I import footage from my Mini-DV camera into iMovie I am seeing a difference between the time displayed on the tape and time displayed in iMovie. The camera says 48 seconds while iMovie says 44 seconds. I thought that it might be related to the framerate of the video in iMovie, but I have changed this to 25 fps which matches the video camera and am still seeing a different time. The framerate needs to be perfect as the footage is going to be shown side-by-side with a animated graph which builds with time.
Does anyone have any idea what could cause this time difference?
    Thanks

< scratching head > we had something about a NTSC/PAL issue.. hmm.. ?
if possible, open an existing PAL project (window titles says DV-PAL), save it under a diff. name, import into that project, delete the not wanted parts..
another option is, quit iMovie, delete ~/Library/Preferences any com.apple.iMovie.plist file.. relaunch iM.. that 'resets' iM... sometimes, it starts to stumble..

  • Hard Drive Cameras and Imovie

I recently had to buy a camera out of urgency as I was on vacation and mine broke and saw the Sony models that use a hard drive instead of tapes or dvd. I became quite interested in them but the lack of information regarding Imovie made go with another mini dv camera. I'm still interested in buying a hard drive camera so my question is, if and how to transfer the files from the camera to imovie. I understand but I'm not sure the movie files are in mpeg 2.
    Mike

rumors are not allowed here, but...
firewire connected devices allow iM to "share"/export processed projects - that is actual the ONLY way to store HiDef content in HiDefquality on some delivery media...
BluRay isn't natively supported (yet) by Apple, even ProMacs lack of a BluRay Superdrive II ...
and, usb2 connected devices need model-specific drivers.. the manufacturer don't support a standard protocol (yet), "drivers" are outside Apple's mantra "simple&convenient"...
    so, as long as we don't have a delivery-media for HiDef, OR a harddrive-corder standard, I would say ..... :-/ ???

  • New Cam and iMovie

I have just connected my new JVC GZ-HD3 Camcorder and cannot put clips in to iMovie. In fact iMovie does not open up when I connect. All the literature says the cam is fully compatible with MAC but I might need to go to college to operate it. Can anybody help please?

At last and thanks to the kind help of tilman, b roger and Klaus1 and the JVC support team I can now download my clips from my GZ-HD3 to my iMac. First I went in to iPhoto, chose 'preferences' then 'general' then 'connecting'. In here I changed the setting of open with 'No Application'. I then threw out old HD6 pkg and downloaded it again and installed it. I then went to the JVC site and downloaded the QuickTime patch in zip form (different from the Apple one) and installed that. I now do not open iMovie to get clips. I go to my Applications folder and open HD6 which has an icon of a film makers clipboard. In here I choose 'file' 'import movies' and then point to my .TOD files. I have actually just messed about and made a silly clip with edits. This is as far as I've got as I will need to read the instructions for editing and stuff for HD6. Thank you kind and patient people.

  • Using NTSC Handycam tape on Pal system (camera and iMovie)

    Greetings,
I got a friend's miniDV tapes that he recorded on a NTSC Handycam. I want to use them with my PAL Handycam to make an iMovie. I was surprised that they play well on my Pal Handycam and I can send them to a PAL TV set. However, when I try to send clips to iMovie I get a message that says I am sending half-frames. Some adjustments were recommended which did not improve the situation. I do not have a NTSC Handycam available to use. I am not sure if this is an iMovie or a Handycam question. Thank you for any help you can give.

  • JVC GY-HM100 camera and imovie

this camera records same format as final cut pro a .mov file. Does this mean it will also work with imovie without any conversion?

Do you know the native file format for imovie 09? if FCP is .mov MPEG2 long GOP.
FCP does NOT work natively with MPEG-2, which is a delivery codec. For iMovie info, post your questions in the iMovie forums.

  • I'm trying to upload videos from my Sony HDR-CX550 camera and the files that contain the video (.cpi or .mts) are all grayed out on iMovie. I've been able to upload footage before onto Apple computers but now it doesn't seem to be working. Suggestions?

I've tried many different options including calling Apple Customer Support and talking to them for over an hour troubleshooting the issue. They couldn't do anything. I also called Sony who failed as well. Somebody please help me out. Thanks!

    Hello whatif95,
Sorry to hear that you are having trouble importing video from your Sony HDR-CX550.  I found an article that provides some information specific to your camera and iMovie '09:
iMovie: Importing both HD and SD content with Sony HDR series cameras
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1793
For versions previous to iMovie ’11 v9.0.1, including iMovie ’08, ’09, and ’11 (v9.0 only):
To import the AVCHD content from the camera when MPEG-2 content has also been recorded, you must first import and erase the MPEG-2 content from the camera. You should then be able to import the AVCHD content.
    I hope this helps!
    Best,
    Sheila M.

  • Web cameras and photo booth

I just picked up a Creative Live ! Cam video IM Pro.
The device is UVC complaint. However it will quit occasionally while in photo booth and I will need to unplug/plug from the usb port to get it operating again. This web cam stuff is all new to me. Can I use this device to record into Imovie ? I'm running 10.5.2on a mac pro.
    Thanks

    You're welcome, joe musich
what can I do with the camera I've got with imovie ?
    Nothing directly with iMovie.
As shown in this Apple kBase article, you need an external (Firewire) iSight or other "IIDC" webcam for recording directly into iMovie with any external webcam. All IIDC webcams connect via Firewire, so no external USB webcam will work to record directly into iMovie.
You can work around this limitation by recording video clips with an application that can use USB webcams like QuickTime Pro. Then import the saved clip into iMovie for editing.
FYI, the built-in iSights in many current Mac models are the only USB webcams that work and allow live monitoring of what is being recorded directly with iMovie. EVERY external USB camera, whether camcorder or webcam, would need to record the video first and import that into iMovie for editing.
Will I be able to see live action form the camera in imovie ?
No, not with your external USB cam and iMovie. Using QT Pro or another app that can record directly from your USB webcam, you will be able to monitor the video action in that app.
Or do I have to import something I capture with the camera ?
Yes, when using your USB webcam and trying to edit with iMovie. To get video from your (or any) external USB cam into iMovie, you must import a previously saved compatible file.
Please let us know if you need any other info before you can mark this topic "Answered."
    Cheers,

  • MPEG-2 and iMovie 5.0.2

My OS is Tiger 10.4.3 and I have iMovie 5.0.2. I am looking into getting a digital hardrvive camcorder (JCV Evario series) that records in MPEG-2 video. I want to learn if iMovie 5.0.2 is compatable with MPEG-2 video?
    Thanks, LF

100% agreement on that fact. DV as a source is much better than using MPEG-2. I was merely pointing out an option for that particular camera and iMovie. I wouldn't own it if they gave me $100 to use it and shipped me the camera at no charge. I will also not purchase any that use proprietary compressions schemes (hear me Sony?).

  • Everio HDD, Footage from Camera to Imovie?

Have any of you guys dealt with the new (to me) Everio HDD camera? If so how do you get the footage over to Imovie? I uploaded the software on to the computer. The directions arent to clear to me so if you guys can help me out that'd be great.
    Thanks in advance! NomeNative

Bought one of these myself and I have had it for about a week.
I couldn't get the included software to work at all - it reported "A necessary Library is missing" - the helpdesk was useless.
Anyway searched the WWW and the consensus seems to be the included Mac software is poor and some users report that it renders the pictures badly (but maybe they used it incorrectly).
Of course, you want to convert without loss of quality. My Web searches indicated you get the best results by using "Mpeg Streamclip" which is a free download, but you also need Apple's "MPEG-2 playback" which is $19.99 (or 14.99GBP for me) - inc. taxes, no delivery charges - you download it.
    That worked great for me.
Here are the notes I made for myself:
FastImport of Everio Files to iMovie
    1. Create a New iMovie Project for DV (this matches the Everio quality)
    2. Create an alias of the Media component of the iMovie Project
    in the Movies folder
    3. Use MPEG Streamclip Batch Convert files to DV (DV25) 720 x 756 aspect ration 4:3 (16.9 ?) deinterlace at Zoom 100% X/Y=1 Center 0,0 (not selecting FrameBlending/BetterDownscaling/RsampleAudio/SplitDV/Cropping), putting (via an alias) the results in the Media component of the iMovie Project
    4. Close the iMovie project and re-open it - iMovie should then report the DV files are in the iMovie trash.
    5. Move (drag) the files from the iMovie trash to the timeline or clips.
    6. Save the iMovie project!!
This method avoids re-encoding the files twice. This is almost as good as iMovie supporting the .MOD (that is MPEG2) format. Otherwise if you create the .DV files first and then reimport them into iMovie
I am not sure the deinterlace is needed, but seems to avoid jaggies on individual frames - though I think it increases (doubles?) the .DV file sizes.
    Other things worh noting.
The 4:3 Movies from the camcorder are 768 x 756, but the 'DV' setting says 720. Dont be fooled by this: the re-encoded Movie is 'DV, 720 x 576 (768 x 576), Millions DV, Stereo, 48.000 kHz' with 768 x 576 pixels (Actual).
You can change the extension to the .MOD files to an MPEG-2 Playback File Type (.mpg, .mpeg, .vob(2), .vro, .m2v, .m2a, or .m2s) and open the files in QuickTime Player, but in that case you seem to loose the sound (at least I didn't get to to work). MPEG Streamclip produces a .DV file with the sound included.
Summary: I can't understand the reports of poor video quality for these cameras - it seems very good to me. Maybe there is an issue with the software supplied which then ruins what the camera captured. JVC would best advised to ship software that allows import into iMovie without loss of quality.

  • Unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie, camera not recognized.

I am unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie.
I have been dealing with this problem for quite a while now, and I think I have tried everything posted on these forums regarding this issue. I have been to the Quicktime, iMovie, and this FCP forum looking for the solution. Hopefully someone has a suggestion that I have missed or have not tried yet. I have a Powerbook G4 running OSX Tiger 10.4. I am running Quicktime 7.04, and FCP 4.5.
My problem is this… I am unable to capture from my Canon ZR-200 Mini DV camera, using Final Cut Pro, iMovie and also Quicktime. FCP says no camera recognized. iMovie says no camera attached, and Quicktime says no recording device found. In FCP, I am using the Firewire Basic setting, and NTSC DV settings. I have captured in FCP with the same camera several times in the past. I think the problem started when I upgraded to OSX 10.4, or one of the Quicktime upgrades.
    Here are the details…
    - Camera is connect via Firewire. I have tried the built in ports, as well as a Firewire Carbus card.
    - OSX recognizes the Canon ZR-200 in the System Profiler, so I know the computer sees the camera.
    - I have tried the camera on a Windows XP machine, and capture works perfectly, so I know the camera is functioning properly in VTR mode.
    - Deleted my FCP pref’s using FCP Rescue.
    - Deleted the Quicktime receipts, and re-installed Quicktime 7.04
    - Reverted back to Quicktime 7.01
    - Set the audio to 44.1 in the the Audio MIDI setup in the Utilities folder
    - Tried the “GarageBand” fix, opening the programing, playing a few notes and closing.
    - I have installed Quicktime using the program “Yank” to completely delete Quicktime and re-install.
I may have tried more solutions, but these are the fixes that I can recall.
If anyone has any others suggestions, it would be much appreciated.
    Brent

  • I have the new macbook pro from late 2011. when i try plugging my cannon gl2 into the mac via firewire 800 it does not show up in iMovie as an option to import from. i even have gone into my settings on the camera and changed it to vcr.

I have the new MacBook Pro from late 2011. "the one before the new ritina display" i have a cannon gl2 video camera which is mini dv. when i plug it into my mac via firwire 800 it does not show up in the iMovie. i have set the settings on the camera to vcr mode and changed it to av->dv out. when i click on the import from camera on imovie it doesnt even show my camera in it. it just gives me the option to import video from my facetime camera. the camera is turned on the wires are connected i know for fact that its a firewire and not a usb. i know what they each look like. i bought the firewire cable and it was marked down cause it was an opened and used item. would it be possible that it could be deffected and if that is not the reason what other options do i have?

I would say that odds are high that you have a bad cable. Maybe that is why they returned it.
I would suggest trying a different firewire cable.
You can find Firewire cables inexpensively at monoprice.com. You need a 4 pin to 9 pin firewire cable.
    Here is a link.
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10301
    Other things to check:
Is your camera plugged in to wall power (not to batteries only). Must be hooked to an AC power source to import.
