Every 60 seconds a blip like static comes in my BOSE earphones only when connected to DELL laptop Windows 7. Started about 6 weeks ago.

Al's link to Dr. Smoke is good but what you can try right now is to restart the computer and hold down the shift key when you hear the bong. This will start you up in Safe Mode, you will know you are in that because it will say so on the opening screen. Then restart again and see if you still have the problem.
In safe mode Tiger deletes a number of font caches, if this is your problem it should be gone after starting up again. But if you've turned off any fonts in Font Book you will have to do so again.
Hopefully that will be a quick fix, if not read Dr. Smoke's FAQS. Actually, you should read them even if it does fix it because all that stuff is good to know.

Preview will not print 8.5" x 14", only when the computer feels like it

This problem has gone on for too long and I don't know what else to do. I have flyers that I cannot print because preview refuses to recognize the document size correctly and consistantly, and I have no other program that can print to our copier.
This happens with any PDF that is not 8.5" x 11". Both 8.5" x 14" and 11" x 17" exhibit the same problem. First I open a PDF in Preview, then I change the document size in Page Setup to "US Legal" and scale of 100% (the scale is always wrong because it is automatically resizing the document to fit on 8.5" x 11"). Then I go to print, check under Paper Handling and under Destination Paper Size is says "Use documents paper size: US Letter". This does not change no matter how many times I visit Page Setup and no matter how many times I save and re-save the file.
At random it will recognize the document size as "US Legal", but this happens only when the computer feels like it, at least that's what it seems like because there are no other settings that are different between one file and another that would cause it to print one as Letter and the next one as Legal.
Some PDFs are created in Photoshop, while other are created in Acrobat. I cannot print directly from Acrobat because of some weird problem with our copier; I cannot print from any Adobe CS3 software.
I don't know what to do. Any help is greatly appreciated.

com.apple.print.custompapers.plist didn't exist on my machine, but com.apple.Preview.plist did. I moved it to the desktop as you suggested, opened the files in Preview and this time it worked. Thanks so much!

So what that means is when you have Do Not Disturb turned on, you may have an alert depending on the setting and how you are using your iPhone. So if it is set to Always, then that means that no matter what, your iPhone will not be notified. If it set to Only while the iPhone is locked, then that means that you will not get notification when your iPhone is locked but you will get notifications if your iPhone is being used. Also keep in mind the settings All Calls From can be set to certain contacts like Favorites, Everyone or no one. If you are using Do Not Disturb and you do not need it, then turn it off.

HT5463 In my opinion, when the Silence setting is "only when the device is locked", it contradicts the settings you set above, like Manual. Can someone explain how these settings work together?

Can someone explain how these settings work together? Manual seams to contraduct the SILENCE setting at the bottom of the Do Not Disturb page. It's very confusing.

You should have seen information in the support document that you linked from. It used to be with the first version of Do Not Disturb that it would only function when the device was locked. That changed with iOS 7, and not it can be active all of the time. With it on Manual, it is on, but if you have the device "awake" that you can still receive calls/texts, etc. Sort of like you have the phone awake, so it isn't a problem for you to receive things. If you set the settings for Always, this means you can be doing things on the phone and not be disturbed by anything else. Does that make sense?

Can read sharred variable only when the vi is ran a second time

In an initialization VI, a shared variable is populated with information from a config file. There is no problem here. The variable is written to. However, when I read from the shared variable in a second vi, the variable only appears to have content the second time the vi is open and ran. First time the vi is open an ran, it errors, saying the shared variable is empty. I tried saving the shared variable library, click deploy and even auto deploy on the library and then saving the project, but nothing happens. Any experiences, tips, ideas or handfulls of money that may help?

You have not specified whether you are creating a single-process shared variable or a network published. In both cases, LabVIEW creates the 'client-side' buffer the first time a Shared Variable node
attempts to read from the shared variable. This behavior
results in a value not being read the first time or a slighlty longer time on the initial execution. Try to read the variable at least once outside the loop to 'warm up' and then read inside the loop. Have a look at the following article:

I have to correct something. With type="video/quicktime", Safari 7.0.1 does play the QuickTime VR Panorama, so it's effective for both QuickTime videos and panoramas. But, what I wrote about Firefox and Chrome hasn't changed.
I did get the QuickTIme with a "?" symbol when I tried to play it with Safari 7.0.1, before submitting the question; but maybe that was a side effect of an earlier attempt.

My new DV7 buzzes every few seconds

I just purchased a Pavilion DV7 (product number XE367EA) and something is wrong. Every few seconds it buzzes, like a spasm. It is most noticeable when I watch a video or listen to music. The activity on the screen vibrates for half a second and the speakers make a buzzing sound. Very annoying! How can I solve this problem?

From what you describe, this may be a problem with the integrated sub-woofer - try downloading and reinstalling the IDT sound driver on the link below.

After the installation has completed, restart the notebook.
If the problem still persists, my best guess would be that this is a Hardware issue - as you have only just purchased the notebook, I would strongly recommend returning it to the retailer and getting a replacement; you shouldn't have to be troubleshooting a brand new machine.

Using a timer to do a task every 3 seconds

Hi all,
I have to write a program while uses a time for listening for multicasts every 3 seconds while playing a console-based game and I having trouble writing the timer as it is the first time I have used timers. I was wondering if somebody could give me some help for the timer-side of things :)
I have looked at the documentation for timers, which can be done either using java.util.Timer or java.swing.Timer but I am having some compilation errors. For my project, it would be best if I was using the java.util.Timer as there will be no GUI for my game.

Garbage collection every 60 seconds

I have a problem with the (default) garbage collector doing a needless Full GC every 60 seconds:

Why is it doing this? There is basically no activity in the application, and there is clearly nothing to garbage collect. According to http://java.sun.com/docs/hotspot/gc1.4.2/ the garbage collector only performs a Full GC when the Tenured generation becomes full. However, that is clearly not the case here.
Any hints will be much appreciated.

I am running JDK 1.4.2_04, on both Windows 2000 and Linux.
I am not doing any System.gc() calls.

Here is how to stop your Mac from broadcasting to udp port 8612 every few seconds without using a Terminal WIndow:
Under Utilities (In Applicatiopn Folder) launch the Activity Monitor, then show "All Processes" and find the one named "CIJScannerRegister.app" and hit the Stop Sign (Quit Process).
Then follow this Machintosh HD--->Library-->Image Capture--->Support--->LegacyDeviceDiscoveryHelpers---->then throw "CIJScannerRegister.app" in the trash and empty it.
Bingo...the broadcast stops.

Is there a chance that someone has installed some kind of

Do you have more than two user accounts in the computer, and
if so, is your Admin account only used to update and maintain
the OS X & to install apps for other users? The levels of security
in Mac OS X can be controlled; and such odd port calls if or when
there is no need, are signs that something is not quite right.
Have you looked into the Console utility to see what is causing the
hang at those time intervals you know this has happened? There
are several different logs and reports in there; some won't apply.
Do the children who use the computer, have access to or know the
Admin account's password? A second user, from their account, can
install software and do other things, if that password is available.
I noticed you had a similar post last month that appeared to go without
a reply; now it is locked and can't be replied to anyway. So this issue
has been going on for some time. What may have happened in the past
year or so, to start this issue in that computer? Something, for certain.

What program access hard disk every 30 second?

I have a very loud hard disk. The hard disk make a very short noice every 30 seconds, even for a new boot. Anyway to check which programming access the hard disk repeatly so I can figure out if it's possible to make the machine quiet?

somthing I read about disk flush/sync timings. There is some sort of 'laptop' mode in some kernels that if set will cause the disk to sync after a period of time in order to let APM/ACPI put the drive to sleep.
There may be settings for your filesystem to do the same(!?). I remember old Windoze NT4 had similar problem and was not remedied until Win2k for use on laptops .... yuck, ... I said the W word.

Introduction ------------
A few properties of the Linux vm makes it virtually impossible to attempt to spin down the hard drive in a laptop for a longer period of time (more than a handful of seconds). This means you are lucky if you can even reach the break even point with regards to power consumption, let alone expect any decrease.
One problem is the age time of dirty buffers. Linux uses 30 seconds per default, so if you dirty any data then flusing of that data will commence at most 30 seconds from then. Another is the journal commit interval of journalled file systems such as ext3, which is 5 seconds on a stock kernel. Both of these are tweakable either from proc/sysctl or as mount options though, and thus partly solvable from user space.
The kernel update daemon (kupdated) also runs at specific intervals, flushing old dirty data out. Default is every 5 seconds, this too can be tweaked from sysctl.
So what does the laptop mode patch do? It attempts to fully utilize the hard drive once it has been spun up, flushing the old dirty data out to disk. Instead of flushing just the expired data, it will clean everything. When a read causes the disk to spin up, we kick off this flushing after a few seconds. This means that once the disk spins down again, everything is up to date. That allows longer dirty data and journal expire times.
It follows that you have to set long expire times to get long spin downs. This means you could potentially loose 10 minutes worth of data, if you set a 10 minute expire count instead of just 30 seconds worth. The biggest risk here is undoubtedly running out of battery.
Settings --------
The main knob is /proc/sys/vm/laptop mode. Setting that to 1 switches the vm (and block layer) to laptop mode. Leaving it to 0 makes the kernel work like before. When in laptop mode, you also want to extend the intervals desribed above. See the laptop-mode.sh script for how to do that.
It can happen that the disk still keeps spinning up and you don't quite know why or what causes it. The laptop mode patch has a little helper for that as well, /proc/sys/vm/block-dump. When set to 1, it will dump info to the kernel message buffer about what process caused the io. Be very careful when playing with this setting, it is advisable to shut down syslog first!
Result ------
Using the laptop-mode.sh script with its default settings, I get the full 10 minutes worth of drive spin down. Provided your work load is cached, the disk will only spin up every 10 minutes (well actually, 9 minutes and 55 seconds due to the 5 second delay in flushing dirty data after the last read completes). I can't tell you exactly how much extra battery life you will gain in laptop mode, it will vary greatly on the laptop and workload in question. The only way to know for sure is to try it out. Getting 10% extra battery life is not unrealistic.
Notes -----
Patch only changes journal expire time for ext3. reiserfs uses a hardwire value, should be trivial to adapt though (basically just make it call get_buffer_flushtime() and uses that). I have not looked at other journalling file systems, I'll happily accept patches to rectify that!
