Every app (incl system/finder) becomes non responsive on right click.

Hello,
I have a mac pro 2008 and have the recurring problem that occasionally after booting up my system everything that I right-click becomes unresponsive (activity monitor says the app is 'not responding') and I get the little apple beachball animation.
This happens with every app i right-click, for example right-clicking the desktop = Finder unresponsive, same happens with Mail, Firefox, Safari, iTunes, Tweetie for Mac, any app i run.
Also bizarre is the fact that while the one app is unresponsive the rest of the system continues to work as expected, for example Finder is unresponsive but I can still switch spaces, surf the net, listen to iTunes...
A reboot usually fixes this but it is still annoying to get this rather frequent error.
Do you guys have any ideas whatsoever what this could be and how i could fix it?
PS: Hard drives have all been verified, permissions have been repaired and no errors whatsoever in those processes have been found.
The bootdrive also has 61% free space (1TB drive) and has recently been defragmented (the issue happend before the defrag as well so that is not the cause).
A hardware test ('d' key pressed during boot) has also found no errors.
Thanks in advance,
and thanks for reading.
Kindest regards,
Jannis

Hi carolyn,
Thanks for your response.
I actually just installed a new mouse.
It happend while I was using the Logitech MX1000 and it continues to happen with my brand new Logitech RX Revolution that I just installed a couple of days ago..
So either it is a gernally Logitech related issue or independant of the mouse.
Thanks again either way!
Kindest regards,
Jannis
PS: i also switched ports but that made no difference unfortunately.

  • My Ipad 2 no longer displays anything. It may come on for a few seconds, but then half of the screen goes completely black, and the system becomes non responsive to all bottons. At other times all four sides of the display becomes black, about 1/4 inch.

Can anyone help me on this one? I got my IPAD 2 in June 2011. It never gave problems until a few days ago. It began to "hang", becoming non-responsive to all buttons. Then just yesterday morning, it went totally black. The display no longer displays. The Battery was charged 96%. I tried the power adapter, but had the same result. I tried the resetting, holding the two buttons for 10 seconds or more but no result. I have already restored it to the factory setting,(via my PC) and put back my apps etc. But after all this I still cannot see anything on the screen.
I know it is still working, because from time to timer I hear the message alerts, and other sounds.
    Waht is the likely solution?

    Try a Reset...
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.
If no joy... Try a Restore...
1: Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
2: If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane.
3: If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try using the steps in this article to force the device into recovery mode.

I have a large collection of books and music. My ipod will sync everything without a problem. Every time I try to sync my iPad it freezes and becomes non-responsive after every file. I'll get one file on there and then have to keep clicking to get itunes to respond again. What is up with this?

  • Address Book becoming non-responsive

I have taken the I-mac (Lion 10.75) to the genius bar 3 times because the Address book program becomes non responsive after I spend some trying to clean up duplicate addresses (merging them) and updating information.    The first time they said to remove one of the Address book preferences, then the last time, after re-installing trhe operating system, they said to remove ALL the preferrences if it happened again.   It did, and I did, but it did not work.   Specifically, the adress book will not search by name and continues to download duplicate adresses from some mysterious place that is not I-Cloud because the addresse are (mostly) in order on the Cloud.
Does anybody have a fix?  Or a recommendation for another address book program that I can synch between I-Mac, I phone and tablets?

Note: These instructions are for OS X 10.8 or later. In OS X 10.7, the procedure is the same, but the application is named "Address Book" instead of "Contacts."
    Step 1
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBookSourceSync
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. Log out, log back in, and test. If there's no change, go to the next step.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 2
    A. If you use iCloud, uncheck the box marked Contacts in the iCloud preference pane. Press return to confirm, or click  Keep on Mac in the dialog that opens.
    B. From the list of groups on the left side of the Contacts window, select All On My Mac. If that group doesn't exist or is empty, skip this step. Otherwise, from the menu bar, select
File ▹ Export ▹ Export vCard
Save the exported contacts to the Desktop.
    C. Quit Contacts. Triple-click the text on the line below on this page to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V), and press return.
A Finder window will open with a folder selected. Move the selected folder to the Desktop, leaving the window open for now.
    D. Launch Contacts. Your contacts will be gone. If you took Step 2, then double-click the file you created in that step and confirm that you want to import from it. Your contacts will reappear.
    E. Re-enable Contacts in the iCloud preference pane, if you disabled it. Test. If the issue is resolved, delete the AddressBook folder and the vCard file on the Desktop and close the open folder window.
Otherwise, quit Contacts again and put the AddressBook folder back where it was, overwriting the newer one that will have been created in its place. Post your results.

  • Now that I was sent by Microsoft to your download update site to get the latest version 4.0.1, Firefox crashes (becomes non-responsive) before opening any site page I try. When will you fix this problem?

For two weeks I have tried to use your automatic download of the latest version 4.0.1. It would sit there telling me it is trying to connect to the download computer for hours, several times overnight. Then, it became non-responsive and error messages were sent to Microsoft who directed me to your download site. After downloading your latest version several times, the new page would open. After selecting a bookmarked site, it would open (sometimes only partially) but when I tried to scroll down, it would freeze up and become non-responsive, again prompting error messages to Microsoft. They must be getting a kick out of this. I'm running a Gateway 7200S desktop with Microsoft XP and Intel single range Pentium 4 processor. I have been using your Mozilla Firefox as my default browser for several years with much satisfaction. Unfortunately, whatever upgrades were made have rendered it useless for me.

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

  • CS4 becomes non-responsive when I right click

When I go to open a document in CS4 and then try to right click, delete or move files while I'm in the open screen, Photoshop becomes non-responsive and I have to shut it down and restart it, thereby losing any unsaved work. It's been doing it for awhile and I've tried to find a solution, but haven't had any luck. I've deleted my cache and that didn't fix the problem.
    Can anyone help, please?

Check the mouse/driver.  The functions you mention are controlled by the OS even though you are in PS.

  • Server 2008 becomes non-responsive intermittently

    Hi,
    I have a virtual server which becomes non-responsive intermittently. The mstsc command will not give the login window and will push me back to the mstsc login screen ( where we enter the hostname we want to remote into ). If I try to login from Vmware console;
after entering the credentials and hit enter, it will push me back to the login screen again. Then I will be left with one option, which is reset it from console.
Can someone help me here to solve it? Why its happening and what is the resolution ?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi
are there any errors in the event log when this happens? Is this server a domain controller?
When it doesnt respond are you still able to ping the server?
Hope this helps. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.
Yes, see if you can ping both IP and Host name at this point. I have seen this happen in a non domain environment.

  • Middle of browsing or working on word the computer becomes non responsive

Whilst typing on word doucment and move between browser and other windows/tabs unpredictably the macbook stops resonding and a rainbow colour pinwheel starts spinnign for ever needing the computer to be force switched off and restarted. any suggestions what could be wrong.

My computer is a laptop Satellite a665-s6086.  The main video player I use is a VLC player.  However, it also becomes non responsive on websites that stream video.  This could be a random site, but videos from youtube have also caused my computer to become non responsive.  I haven't tried other media players yet.  I am not sure yet about a 2 hour movie.  The other day, I got through a few shows before it started acting up, maybe about 2.5 hours worth of video.
When my computer becomes non responsive, I can't open other programs, and when I try to close open programs, they just freeze and do not shut down.  If i try to close a web browser, I just get the (not responding) note in the tab bar.   You can tell things start to not work when in the middle of a video, the noise kind of makes a gurgle sound I guess.  Its the same sound video makes if I were to accidently bump or shake my computer.  That noise is hard to describe.  the video slows down a little, but usually I can finish watching it.  When i power down my computer, i turn it off using the button and turn it back on.  Everything boots up like normal, and things seem fine until I try watching another video.

  • Is there a way to "Quit" all running apps in dock at the same time verses right-clicking each one individually?

Is there a way to "Quit" all running apps in dock at the same time verses right-clicking each one individually?

IIRC, OPTION-click on the Apple icon on the menu bar and select either Restart or Shutdown. Alternatively,
    Control-Command-Eject
Quit all applications (after giving you a chance to save changes to open documents), then restart the computer
    Control Option-Command-Eject
Quit all applications (after giving you a chance to save changes to open documents), then shut down the computer

  • Mavericks won't install, the button in App Store is blank and non-responsive.

This is extremely frustrating, and I have read every website trying to answer this issue. None of their problems match mine.
I tried to download Mavericks yesterday. It appeared to download as normal, with the icon in launch pad, but the progress bar never moved. I cancelled the download, and tried to restart it. The download button is non-responsive. I've tried going to the store tab, clicking unfinished downloads, and it says all downloads are complete.
When I go to purchases, Mavericks is listed under "other downloads," but the button is solid black with no text, e.g. download or install, and is non-responsive. Clicking the button does nothing.
I have tried using CCleaner to clean the app store's cache, restarting the computer with a full shutdown, quitting and restarting App Store, etc. Nothing works.
If I close and reopen App Store after a full shut down, Mavericks will disappear from the purchases menu. If I go to Mavericks, click "free upgrade," then button changes to "install." When I click install, nothing happens. Mavericks reappears under the purchases menu with its button, again, completely black with no text. The button is non-responsive.
Having a $2,500 Mac, I have to say that I am extraordinarily upset with the shoddy work of Apple over the past few years. For $2,500 I expect the product to work.

Actually, it appears to have started downloading, even the the purchases tab still doesn't reflect it.
Try what I did, typing "sudo nvram boot-args="-x"" (include the quotations around the -x), and then entering your account password.
Reboot the system, which will cause it to do a full reboot (you'll find your mac operates very slowly). Log into your account, then try hitting "free upgrade" and "download" from the Mavericks page in app store (not the purchases tab). It will ask you for your Apple ID and password, then it *should* automatically take you to launch pad.
If the download doesn't seem to be progressing, press the icon in launch pad to pause it. Exit launch pad and scroll down in App Store to 'free apps" on the right side. Click to download one of them, enter your password and Apple ID as usual, and see if it downloads. Once finished, hit the Mavericks icon again to unpause it. It should start then. It's clearly a very large install, so over the past thirty minuites the progress bar has moved roughly a milimeter.

  • Screen becomes non-responsive during calls

    Hello:
I am having an occasional, but seemingly becoming more frequent, problem in which the screen becomes non-functional during calls. My immediate impression is of removing the phone from my ear to end a call and the screen not lighting up. Eventually, after I played with the buttons (which may or may not have really helped) the phone lit up. This has also happened when the phone was ringing, making it impossible to take the call.
I am using the most current firmware, but believe the problem began with an earlier version. It just seems more frequent. I cannot reproduce the problem on demand.
    Ideas? Solutions?
    David

The proximity sensor, which is what tells the phone to turn off the touch screen when the phone is against your face to prevent "cheek dialing", is located just above the ear speaker hole. Do you have a case or anything else on the phone that could possibly be blocking the sensor?

  • IDVD becomes non responsive

I am using iLife 06. I created a movie in iMovie. The movie is 75 minutes long. I then converted it to iDVD. When I click on the burn button in iDVD it starts with no problems. It goes through all the steps until the Burn Process. Then it does nothing. If I open Force Quit from the Apple menu it shows that iDVD is non-responsive. I am using an external hard drive as my internal hard drive is only 60GB. I have burned many DVD's but this is my first with this OS and this version of iLife. I have archived the project as a sugesstion from the help topic and I got the same result. All results in the Project Info are in the green. I also tried to burn in widescreen and standard and I got the same result. Any help in getting this resolved would be appreciated.

It is probably not 'hanging'. Disregard any messages
that iDVD is not responding. It is. Do not force
    quit.
Encoding audio is the slowest part of rendering, and
can take many hours. Great patience, even an
intermittent alternative hobby, is called for.
Wow. I thought the video would take the longest! And then once I thought there was a problem, I got all paranoid and kept checking it and I saw that the little burning icon wasn't spinning so I assumed it was stuck, which made me check the force quit thingy which then apparently lied to me!!! Before when I burned previous copies of this I just went away and didn't check it for a long time so I'm thinking that I never noticed it.
Make sure no other application is running, make sure
you have not set the hard disk to go to sleep and
that the screen saver will not come on. Leave it
overnight, or have a 36 hole game of golf.
The screen saver did come on once so I wonder if that was an issue and I did figure out to stop it from putting itself to sleep... I have 158 GB of free space on the hard drive so I think i'm OK on space! I will try to set it up and LEAVE it alone -- in fact, I will leave the building for a while! You know when it was looking frozen to me it was very rarely making little tiny clicking sounds but so much less than when it was doing the audio that I thought it wasn't working right! That's what happens when we assume, I guess!
Thanks so much for everyone's advice!

  • Keyboard becoming Non-Responsive

I have recently started encountering my keyboard on my early 2008 Macbook Pro becoming un-responsive. Once the keyboard locks up, the trackpad and keypad become totally unresponsive. However, if I push the power button, OSX displays the shutdown option list (so OSX seems to be running OK). I can also use VNC to access the MBP and everything seems ok. However, the only way to resolve this was to reboot the MBP.. This is occurring 5-10 times a day and is very frustrating. This sounds similar to the issues being encountered at the end of 2007 which resulted in a fix from apple... However, when I try to download and install the fix, it says I dont need it....
Anyone have any ideas.... Frustrating to being having these issues on basically new machine....
