Every backup to my Time Capsule is 9+ GB

I have a problem with my Time Capsule (3rd gen) or the Time Machine software on my MacBook Pro 13" running OS/X Lion (10.7.2).
It has worked faultlessly for over a year now, but has recently developed a fault - I'm not sure when this started, but I slowly noticed that it was spending a lot more time than usual doing backups. Every single hourly backup is slightly more than 9 GB in size. This includes times when I have done absolutely nothing on the MacBook since the previous backup.
I guess I could reset the Time capsule to defaults and reformat the disk and start afresh - but I'd prefer to understand what the problem is in case it happens again.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Is there a log file anywhere that will tell me what files get backed up?

You may want to try this to see what files contains the backup :
http://www.macgurulounge.com/see-which-files-time-machine-backed-up/
or
http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20080714124323976
You also have http://www.charlessoft.com/ TimeTracker.
Never tested either os these but it can help determining the content of your backups.
Any Virtual Machines not ignored are backing up their disks every hour ?

At startup hold down the Command+Option/Alt+r keys until you see a globe on the screen. Then use disk utility to partition and format the drive HSF+ and then select Reinstall Mac OS X. whatever version of OS X that originally came on your system will be installed and then you can upgrade back to Mavericks.

How can I copy a time machine backup from one Time Capsule to another ? I bought a 1 Tb Time Capsule to replace my 512Mb Time Capsule. Now, I like to copy my time machine backup from the old Time Capsule to the new one so I can keep using my backup.

  • How do I move time machine backup on filled time capsule to  external disk

TIme machine backups from imac and mbp are currently on 1TB time capsule running out of space.
I want to split the time capsule and move just the imac backups to a new external drive which I want to share with a new macbook air.
The new external drive has been set up with mac OS extended with a GUID partition.
THe instructions  on MAC 101: time machine Mac OS X v10.6: How to transfer your backups from your current hard drive to a new hard drive tell me to drag "backups.backupdb" to a new drive but I can't find it. I have just upgraded to Lion thinking I would find it now but it is still not there. Is this becaue I have both imac and mbp backups on the TIme capsule?  Here is a screen image of my DATA folder. Desktop  seems to be empty. A search for "backups" finds nothing.
EVen if I found backups.backupdb I am not sure whether I should have the external drive connected to the time capsule or the imac to move this file. It will be kept as an external drive connected to the time capsule so I can use it for both the imac and the macbook air.
And I am not sure whether I first need to set up the new drive as the time machine backup drive on the new macbook air or do it after I move the file.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

oops, I just found how to find backups.backupdb by myself, or at least with help from:

  • I am trying to delete a Time Machine backup from a Time Capsule.

I am trying to delete a Time Machine backup from a Time Capsule.  The file is about 400GB and my MacBook has been trying to delete it for 5h now. It still says "deleting" but has not given me a "time remaining" yet. Any idea of what I could do????

You should not attempt to delete backups using the Finder. The result can be a corrupted backup.
I recommend you let it complete, no matter how long it takes. That could be days, if your TC is connected via wireless.
It is not necessary to delete backups, since Time Machine will delete old backups some time after they have been deleted from your source volume. For more information read Apple Support Communities contributor Pondini's explanation here: Should I delete old backups? If so, How?

  • Backup Contents of Time Capsule

    Hi,
I have a 27" imac running mountain lion and 1TB Time Capsule that I backup to.  I want to take periodic backups of my Time Capsule to ensure an extra level of backup
I seem to remember seeing an option under the Airport Utility for backing up a Time Capsule to another HDD from USB but I can't find it now.
Any ideas on how to do this or has this feature been removed?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Mark

The old archive feature was removed.. Apple decided you no longer need it.
But TM in the Mountain Lion can backup to two different locations.. you can use a USB disk plugged occasionally into the computer and backup to that. (This was always possible by changing target for backup but ML has automated it somewhat).
Or you can manually copy the sparsebundle..

When my time machine tries to backup to my time capsule I get the following message"The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Kent’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use. " What do I need to do to fix this?

    Restart the Time Capsule.

  • What is the solution to the following: Backup Failed. The backup on "my Time Capsule" is already in use.

What is the resolution to the following error message: "Backup Failed. The backup on "Name Time Capsule" is already in use."
    Time Capsule 2nd Generation;
    Mac Book Pro, late 2013, 2GHz Intel Core i7; 8 GB, 1600Mhz DDR3; OS X 10.9.4

Pull the power cord from the TC.. count to 10 slowly.. plug the power cord back into the TC.. voila.. problem fixed.
BUT a gen2 is getting long in the tooth.. get reach for hardware failure.. and this might be the first signs.

Your "profile" is the information in your original post that tells us that you are using OS X (10.6.8).
We will assume that you are using OS X (10.6.8). If you are not sure what OS X you are using.....
Click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen
    Click About This Mac
Post back with the OS X Version number that you see there
In the meantime, please right-click on the Time Machine clock icon on the dock at the bottom of the screen and then click Browse Other Time Machine Disks. Select the other disk if it appears. See if your old backups are there.

  • I can´t see the last backup in my time capsule

I had problems with mi imac, so i decided formating the HD. Before format the HD, i made the backup with the time machine in my time capsule. After that, i made the formating, but now i can´t see the last backup in the time capsule.
Can somebody tell me what to do? Because the last backup that it´s show was made in september 2008 and the last backup i made yesterday may 29,2009

TC does not support scanners.. just printers.. if you have a MFC .. only the printer will work.

  • Can I restore a backup (on a time capsule) from a macbook to a macbook air?

can I restore a backup (on a time capsule) from a macbook to a macbook air?

I've never personally done this, but I'm qute sure you can.  After all, this would be one method of migrating from the MacBook to the MacBook Air (with the assistance of Migration Assistant).

  • Getting OSS Status Error 28 when trying to setup backup drive to time capsule on wife's new macbook air, what is error 28?

Time Capsule--OSS Status Error 28 when attempting to set backup drive to time capsule data drive

It just means it is not available.. I think.. apple doesn't exactly give you a guide to errors.
What OS is on the MBA.. Yosemite??
That would be absolute bog standard problem.
Same as here.. Time Capsule OSStatus error 28
Even with older OS apple introduced some poor networking decisions at lion which have carried through.
    1. Try a simple reboot of the TC.. then try a reboot of the whole network.
    No luck.
    2. Reset the TC to factory and redo the setup from MBA.
Use short names no spaces and pure alphanumeric names and passwords.. nothing more than 20 characters.
Use WPA2 Personal security only and password that conforms to the above.
    No luck
    3. Make sure the wireless is set to IPV6=Link-local only in the MBA.
Tell us if those all fail.

  • How Do I Delete backup data from Time Capsule if have 2 computers on 1 TC?

I have been backing up 2 computers (one desktop/one laptop) to a 1TB Time Capsule. I have now added an external hard drive for the desktop computer and would like to delete that computer's backups from Time Capsule to free up space for the laptop computer. How do I delete the desktop computer's backup data from Time Capsule without disturbing the laptop back ups? Do I drag the desktop computer's backups.backupdb and sparsebundle to trash and empty?
    Thanks.

Thanks though I am still a bit confused as I had read NOT to delete via Finder, but via Disk Utility (erase). Does it make any difference?
You're probably referring to the advice never to change, move, or delete anything inside your backups via the Finder, as that can corrupt them.
A number of folks have tried to delete a single backup that way, and caused all sorts of troubles.
Deleting the entire sparse bundle is ok.

  • Mirror or backup one Airport Time Capsule 2TB to another over the internet?

Hello, is it possible to mirror, or backup, one Airport Time Capsule 2TB to another, at a remote location over the internet?
    Much appreciated.

Copying a backup is actually a poor way to make reliable backups.. because an error creeps into the backup and the copy simply replicates it.
I would use a USB drive plugged directly into the computer, and use a software like CCC to make a bootable clone.. I tell you honestly.. it is just wonderful when you have disk issue in a computer to be able to plug in a hard drive and boot the computer from it. Especially Macs with their hard to reach drives. Changing a drive on a PC laptop or desktop computer is usually trivial. It is far from trivial in a Mac.
Use two USB drives and swap them over to offsite weekly. Then use cloud for incremental in between.. or a combo of the TM .. TM can backup to multiple destinations.
