Every document should have a unique number.

The layout of SDN and service.sap.com changes seemingly daily.  The location of documents changes to an extent that it is often not possible to find things any more.  Many documents refer to other documents that no longer exist or at a location that no longer exists.
The search functionality yields 'creative' results many times.
This could be easily rectified by giving each document a unique number.  This way, all documentation would only have to have a reference (e.g. See document 123456789.99) so that we could always find what we want.
Some smarts could be applied to the document number format.
E.g. XXX99999999.999, where XXX identifies the type of document, 99999999 is the document number, and the .999 is the version number.
Some examples,
SNO000012345.027  would be version 27 of SAP Note 12345
SNO000012345.999 would be the latest version of that document - this is important.  Can you imagine how easy it could be to find a document?  In the search field you just type the document number with a version of .999 and you would be guaranteed to find the latest version of that document!
The potential time and money saved for SAP and customers would be enormous.

Hello Martin,
Thank you very much for your response.  It is gratifying to know that the appropriate people read and respond to our comments.
It is true that only the latest version of a document is available on the Service Marketplace.  However it is very typical for me (and I assume others) to have my own copy of a document.  For example, instructions on performing some technical task.
When I next want to perform that task I might check to see if there is a newer version of that document.  I frequently encounter the situation where the structure of the service marketplace has changed and I can spend considerable time trying to find the location of that document.  I used to keep instructions on where to find particular documents but I gave up because the locations seem to change more quickly than I can keep up with.
Another common situation I encounter is when one SAP document refers to another document, with navigation instructions for the Service Marketplace.  However, again, due to the dynamic nature of the layout of the site the instructions are no longer valid.
SAP also frequently change the names of products.  e.g. Solution Manager 4.0 is now known as Solution Manager 7.0.  Netweaver 2004s has become Netweaver 7.0.  This can make searching difficult as I may be searching for product 'X', but unknown to me it has become product 'Y'.
These situations, combined with the sometimes slow speed of the Service Marketplace can result in much wasted time trying to find a document.  Again, please imagine being able just type in a document number and instantly be presented with that document?  Across the large number of users this would save many, many hours.
Do you ever trace the usage of the site?  If others are like me you would see that we spend a long time navigating in many directions trying to find the desired document.  A short method like I describe would remove a considerable burden from the site if people could instantly find what they want.
The search engine has improved immeasurably over recent years but it still can be frustrating at times searching by keywords alone.
Thanks for posting the URL shortcut for SAP Notes.  I have been using something like this.  Is this publicised at all?  I think many people would find it useful.
Cheers.

  • Check if a generated document can have a unique bar code for tracking.

Is it possible to check if a generated document can have a unique bar code for tracking?......We r using the Adobe Central Output Server 5.5 version on windows xp........

I know of nothing built into the software that is specifically for the purpose of generating a unique value.
External of the server there are a couple things that might work.
    1) The source of the data file could create a field in the file that contains a unique value that would be the value for the bar code field. For example, the source program could access a database (Access, SQL, whatever) and grab a numeric field for the value while incrementing the field for the next time. If it isn't practical for the source program to do this, then a "custom agent" could be written that would run prior to printing the form that would do this database access and add the field to the data file before passing it on to the print agent.
    2) You could reference the built-in date & time variables (see the Print Agent manual for $date & $time) to use as the value for the variable to be the value for the bar code field. Depending on how long your print job takes to process you could use the time variable that includes the hundredths of a second or not. For example, having the following in the data file:
    b ^field UniqueBarcode
    b @$date1.@$time3.
would result in a value of
    b 05021506511429
for the year (05), month (02), day (15), hour (06), minute (51), second (14), and hundredths (29) of the date & time I typed this in. If you wanted the millenium & century you could just hard-code it by placing "20" in front of the @$date1. reference. Of course, depending on the particular bar code you use, a 14 or 16 digit bar code could be too long for what you want.
One caution with this method, though. If your Central server is set up for processing multiple instances of Central, it would be possible to get duplicates since two (or more) jobs, running in different instances, could start at the same time.

    Hi;
This isn't something that FormsCentral supports but we do have a "Feature Request" form where you can vote on popular existing ideas or add a new one of your own:

  • Every time I try to open Microsoft Word, every document I have ever written opens up

This problem just started yesterday.  And it isn't because I have a documents open from earlier or because I have the "open at login" box checked.  I'm talking like, every single saved document on my mac just opens up one after another in a frenzy.  Does anyone know how to fix this?

I am not sure this will work or not. But give it a try.
System Preference > Personal/General > Number of recent items section
Uncheck the box left of "Number of recent items" at the bottom of the section.
    Hope this helps.

  • I want to create an ePub2 document should have a proper view in IPAD

I created a ePub document as per the standard epub2 format but it is not to good to view in IPAD. IF i view it in ADE or kindle it is good to look but in IPAD the inline images are even placed in their position. So please anybody help me to built an epub2 document which can be viewed good in both IPAD and ADE. I wanta help that whether any script or code to be added in the EPUB document to make it viewed properly in the book format.

    Hi Gopal,
Do check your META-INF folder. It should contain "com.apple.ibooks.display-options.xml" which will make the view same as you do it on ADE.
I know my answer was too late. Please let me know if you had already solved the issue and what was the solution you figured out.

  • Each Virtual Copy should have a unique identifying suffix (e.g. vc1, vc2, vc3 etc)

This is particularly handy when you're working with several copies in views other than Grid. For example, in "Survey View" you cannot tell one from the other. In fact, you cannot tell which is the original. Same goes for Loop View in Develop - there's no name indicating original or v copy.
    Joe

Renaming the file doesn't make sense for a virtual copy since it is just another take on the same underlying file. I'm not sure that file renaming would avoid confusion. A VC-specific suffix might not be a bad idea, though.
However, why wait? You can already add comments to specific virtual copies using metadata. My personal solution was to add the IPTC "Job Qualifer" (part of the workflow group) field to my metadata panel so that I don't have to go to "All" to see it. I can then add a comment to it for any virtual copy that I feel requires a comment. Of course, you can use any IPTC field that makes sense to you.
You can create your own metadata panel layouts here:

    Hi,
You can provide links for KM documents and provide anonymous access to KM documents by setting read permissions to everyone. One such example is in this blog. Check out at the end.

  • Can anybody tell me how do I change the download location on the firefox for android browser. The download are filling my tablets memory? Every browser should

Every browser should have a download directory. And no I do not want to use dolphin or any other browser.

I tried this and it didn't work. There was no setting in \about:config for "browser.download.dir" so I added it as a string and set it to my phone's extSdCard, restarted firefox, tried another download, but it still went to the old location. Any ideas?

  • How to assign a unique number to the name column of a document set?

How can I assign a unique number to the name column of a document set preferably with workflows? (Perhaps this number can increase by one each time a new document set is created)
When a user attempts to create a new document set, this unique number should be already there as the name of the document set.
(However, It seems that access and edit the Name column is more tricky than the other columns)

    Hi,
To use document ID instead of Name column, you can
Modify View and hide Name column. Then make Document ID to display at the left column.
By default, document ID will be assigned to both document items and document sets. You may
experience delay before you can see document ID assigned to existing document items and document sets because the scheduled document ID assignment timer jobs haven't finished yet.

  • My computer froze so i restarted it, and now that its back on every document i'v worked on has popped up on my desktop and will not exit. what should i do?

my computer froze so i restarted it, and now thats its back on every document i've work on has popped up on the desk top and wont exit. what sould i do?
it is a macbook pro, OS X mountain lion 10.8.2, i can open new windows and exit them but not all the pop ups

Start from your recovery system. OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion includes a built in set of utilities in the Recovery System. Restart your Mac and hold down the Command key and the R key (Command-R), and keep holding them until the Apple icon appears, indicating that your Mac is starting up. After the Recovery System is finished starting up, you should see a desktop with a OS X menu bar and a "Mac OS X Utilities" application window. Note: If you see a login window or your own desktop and icons, it is possible that you didn't hold Command-R early enough. Restart and try again.
When your computer finishes starting up, choose Disk Utility from the Utilities window.
Click the First Aid tab. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    Select your OS X volume.
Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

  • How Can I Print A Unique Number on a Series of PDF documents?

I have a weird question that I could not find an answer for via search previous questions. I essentaily have a PDF flyer that I want to print X copies of (where as X is a number, 50, 150, whateve amount I need at the moment). I want to have a unqiue number printed on each copy (sort of like a serial number). So Copy 1 would have a number of  909, copy 2 would have a new numbe,r say 910. The unique number could be random or in series (not important which). I'm wondering if this is possible within Adobe Acrobat X or InDesign CS5?

Yes, it's possible with Acrobat, but it requires a bit of scripting. You'll
    need to set up:
    - A print-only text field
    - A script that will launch before the file is printed and update that
field (either by incrementing it or by giving it a random value)
    - A script that sends the same file X times to the printer (you can't just
print X copies, because then the field won't update)
