Every effect must be rendered?

Been combing the forums for some time looking for an answer.
I've captured about 10 mins of HD footage from my HDR-FX7. I can drop my clips right in the time line with no rendering needed; however, any effect added needs to be rendered, even something as simple as a border. Naturally this is creating a great deal of frustration and I'm ready to go back to Vegas...
This seems so basic, but I don't know what to do.

Trust me, everyone goes through this stage of frustration, you just need to get over it and accept that some of these things need to be tolerated to get the advanced capabilities Final Cut gives you. As to your second question, FCE doesn't work with MP3 files. You should first convert it to AIFF.
Look over this link and see if it helps you at all with this process:

  • After Effects crashes when rendering to H264

    Hi,
On one of my computers, After Effects Crashes when rendering to H264. It always chrashes when doing the last frame of a clip. I think its when muxxing the m4a and the m4v together...
Does anyone have a solution? maybe there is some odd codec trash going on?
    Thanks in advance!

In every version of AE that has been capable of exporting h.264 the quality has been significantly lower than exporting with an app that gives you the option of multi-pass rendering. This has always been true for MPEG codecs that use inter frame (temporal) compression. You just can't get the same quality without multi pass compression. This goes back to the first use of MPEG streams.
AE CS6 may have H.264 encoding broken internally, but any pro has never used AE to render highly compressed delivery codecs because AE was never designed to be the right tool for the job.

  • 'project must be rendered before it can be encoded'

Why do I always get the message 'project must be rendered before it can be encoded' when I try to export using quicktime conversion to product an mpeg2 for DVD Studio Pro?

Beeeeeecause the project must be rendered before it can be encoded.
Based on my experience, this is the workflow you should use for going from Final Cut Pro to DVD:
    1. Finish your project. You'd be amazed how many people forget this step.
    2. Export a QuickTime reference movie. That is to say, do "Export" then "QuickTime Movie," but leave the "make self-contained" box unchecked.
    3. Drop the resulting QuickTime onto Compressor.
    4. Select one of the DVD encoding presets, based on the length of your material. Use one of these:
    DVD: Best Quality 150 minutes
    DVD: Best Quality 120 minutes
    DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes
    5. The encode will go as fast as it can, depending on how you set up Compressor. If you're using eight processors, it'll go pretty darned fast.
    6. Drop the resulting ".m2v" and ".ac3" files onto the "assets" window in DVD Studio Pro. Place them on a track, and finish your DVD just like you would under any other circumstances.

Hi everyone, I'm the one from the example above posted by @frankensinatra and I can confirm having the same problem.
But I want to add something. The problem is not only related to black and white but to every picture, and it can be worse or not depending on the range of colors involved. Apparently, there is a shift between some RGB value that is going to remove some green producing a magenta look.
I've started contacting some developer about this problem and some of them is trying to understand what's going on.
In my case, the problem came up when I bought the new iPad mini Retina. I didn't have this problem with the previous iPad mini. Same OS for both devices.
The photo you see in the link above is a perfect example of what happens just going from one app to another and saving to the camera roll. In that case, the situation doesn't change if I send that picture from within the app by email, or to another app using the "open in..." feature. It keeps being purple. And the problem can be reproduced all the time.
Have some of you noticed the same?

  • "movie must be rendered before it can be encoded"

    Hey all...
I'm trying to export to mpeg2 or otherwise to Quicktime so I can burn a dvd.
Now with the first I get the message that "this movie must be rendered before it can be encoded"
in QT conversion with mpeg2 selected. There are no red lines indicating a rendering need.
I didn't have this problem when I first exported but when I added a mp3 file it started
    acting this way.
Can somebody please let me know what the heck i'm now doing wrong?
    Thanks!
    Ann

Red is only one type of render set. There are many others. Make sure full is checked on in Render All and then press Opt-R.
It would be good to know what versions of the software, QuickTime and OS you're using. MPEG-2 export is no longer available in FCP.
Compressed audio like MP3 should not be used in Final Cut.

What version of X are you running?
Here is how to find out what version of Mac OS you are running:
Click on the blue apple in the upper left hand of the screen.
    click on this icon
Click on the first line, "About This Mac"
Most of these are numbers & that's what we want.
What version & Processor do you have?

  • Every application must have exactly one instance of UIApplication...

    From documentation...
""Every application must have exactly one instance of UIApplication (or a subclass of UIApplication )" .. none of the templates in the SDK create an app with an UIApplication instance or subclass that I can tell."
Yet, in all three sample templates I can't find any instance or subclass of UIApplication.
Creating a new Cocoa Touch Toolbar Project...the closest thing is:
    @interface Untitled2AppDelegate : NSObject <UIApplicationDelegate> {...}
Does using the <UIApplicationDelegate> ake the NSObject an instance or subclass of UIApplication? Why not use
    @interface Untitled2AppDelegate : UIApplication {...}

Check the main.m file. It should have a line something like this in it:
    int retVal = UIApplicationMain(argc, argv, nil, @"Untitled2AppDelegate");
The UIApplicationMain function is creating a UIApplication instance internally and setting its UIApplicationDelegate to your custom delegate.
The 3rd parameter specifies the name of the UIApplication class you want to use. Passing nil defaults to the normal UIApplication class, but if you needed to use a custom class derived from UIApplication, you could pass its name in there. More than likely, though, the UIApplicationDelegate interface gives you access to everything you need.

  • Unwanted strobe effect showing on rendered clips - Adobe CC 2014

I'll try and describe the issue as best as possible - I haven't been able to find any similar issues by googling or on forums.
As a bit of information about the project it's adobe CC 2014 with a mix of c100, c300, Gopro and various other footage so a mix of .MTS, .MXS and Mp4 files. All stored and edited from external hardrive via USB 3.
I started out by having red frames appear when I scrubbed through footage on the timeline, and then they appeared in the actual exported file - which from googling seemed to an issue with media encoder not being able to render the source clip properly.
As part of the fix which seemed to work to get rid of the red frames I moved the media cache files from their default location users>library>applicationsupoprt>adobe>common to a render folder which I created on the external hardrive. To be specific I manually deleted media cache and media cache files then created the folder on the external drive and directed adobe to put the files there. That got rid of the red frames but a few days and a different project later I started getting a strobe like effect where every other frame on a few (seemingly random) clips is black, except for the top left corner which shows the image in part. When the footage is unrendered (red on timeline) it plays back fine. When it's rendered the strobe effect happens everytime on playback and with export. All clips it happens to are c300 clips, but there are plenty of c300 clips in the timeline it doesn't happen to. All clips have the same effects on them.
I've made all clips offline, and reconnected media. I've uninstalled and reinstalled adobe CC desktop and all apps about 3 times and used Adobe cleaner to get rid of files then reinstalled. Nothing seems to work. I have noticed that even though the media cache files are redirected to the external drive now, it still creates a media cache folder in the default location and puts some render files there. Perhaps it's something to do with these duplicate render files???
    Hope that makes some sense.
    Anyone else had this happen?
Any help/advice would be much appreciated. It's for a TVC and needs to be delivered next week.

Thanks Simon, I think you're right.
I seem to have narowed ig down to being a combination of the 'warp stabilisation' effect plus a vignette (made from black video and 'circle' effect).
Whenever these effects are both on, and the clips are rendered I get the strobe effect, but if one or the other is off I don't anymore.
At least I can export the edit with warp stabilisation effect, and then add the vignette to the exported clip - not ideal but a work around.
    Hope it get's fixed soon.

  • After Effects error when rendering

"After Effects error: Rendering error while writing file "file_name". An output module failed. The file maybe damaged or corrupted (-1610153464)"
file rendered successfully in draft and poor quality but this error is when best quality.
Tried saving into different location, rendered but the finished film kept stopping every 2 seconds and took 7GB of space. The film is meant to be 55 seconds long.

You are using the default Animation codec which is the default codec. You should really study up on rendering and formats. I'm guessing that your connection to the external drive had some data rate problems or started dropping bits. Try another cable or render to your boot drive. You've scaled your latest screenshots to the point where they are very difficult to read, but it looks like everything else is normal except that your top screenshot shows the only footage in the shot looks like it came from a GoPro and your composition frame rate in the Render Settings is showing up as 24. It's not likely that that is the actual frame rate of the footage. Select the footage in the composition in the Project Panel and check out the frame rate. If it is 59.94 then your comp should either be 29.97 or 59.94. Because of the size I suspect that the frame rate is not 24 but 23.976.
This probably did not cause your problem but frame rates are important to understand and use properly.

  • Horrible final video quality in After Effects CS6 when rendering a 1920x1080 video with H.264 format

I've been using After Effects CS6 on my Macbook Pro for over a year now with no issues. However, today when I exported a video to be rendered in 1920x1080p with H.264 format, I got the worst quality final video I've ever seen. I filmed my video files in 1920x1080p (like usual), and I clicked all the same buttons I normally do to export a video, but every HQ video I try to export looks horrible. I haven't clicked any crazy buttons or anything out of the ordinary.
I always export a video following this sequence:
File > Export > Add to Render Queue > Lossless > H.264 (quality format) > video output (make sure it's checked) > audio output (make sure it's checked) > OK > Output to Desktop
My render settings are always set as "best settings" including "full" resolution and "best" quality.
Now, when I click H.264, a "settings mismatch" pops up and says:
"Warning: Output file will be resized from 1920x1080 (1.00 PAR) to 320x1080 (6.00 PAR) to meet format constraints"
The rendering quality and playback quality within After Effects is great, but once the video is exported, it is horrible.
PLEASE HELP?! I have deadlines I need to meet!

Use the H.264 encoding presets in Adobe Media Encoder.
The H.264 export features in After Effects have been removed in later versions because of numerous problems.

  • After Effects CC slow renders on iMac (low CPU Usage?)

    Hi,
i have an fully specced late 2013 27" iMac for working with the Creative Cloud Programms. At the moment i only have 8GB installed because of problems with my 32 GB Ram kit. I have an internal SSD for the OS and Programms, an 256GB USB3 SSD for Chache Files and a Raid 0 for my Source Files.
I am now rendering an 7min long movie shot on an Red Epic in 5K and 4K to an ProRes422HQ 1080p File out of After Effect. I mainly used the "Levels" Effect and an Plug-In called "Film Convert". No crazy animations or effects. My Render time is about 18 hours (it`s nearly finished, so this are no wrong calculations by AE).
Are this normal render times that should be expected when working with such large source files?
What makes me wonder is that the Activity Monitor show only bout 40% CPU Usage (see attached screenshot), shouldn`t that be maxed out?
I have to render out a few more similar clips, so optimizing this would be great.
Thanks a lot for the help!

    Hi,
thanks  a lot for your answers!
I was too thinking about the HDD setup but i think mine is pretty decent. My source footage is on an 3 HDD Raid-0 with 550 MB/s read and write, i have an 250 GB Scratch/Chache SSD in an USB 3 UASP enclosure thats around 400 MB/s read and write and my project files are on an external USB 2 drive (will change to USB 3 soon). Only thing is that i am outputting my files to the Scratch/Chache SSD right now because i am still waiting for my USB 3 "Output" drive. But i don`t think the Chache is beeing used while rendering, or could that be the mistake?
The GPU is this one: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB and should be ok i think.
I hope my new 32GB Ram kit arrives soon, so i can test if more RAM helps.
I have an 4K HD (Quad 1080p) Composition which contains mostly 4K HD source footage mixed with some downscaled 5K HD shots and some upscaled 2K HD Shots. The comp is mainly a simply edit from premiere with a Levels effect on every clip and the 3rd party film convert plugin plus an Unsharp Mask on the whole comp on adjustment layers. I tried turning those off too but it wasn`t speeding up much the rendering. I have no Ray-traced comp.
I left the Render Settings to "Best Settings" for the final rendering. Altough for preview purposes i was putting the resolution to "quater" in the Render Settings and it took only about 30min for the whole comp to render.
In the Output Module i was chosing ProRes422HQ as a codec and 1920x1080 as output resolution.
The 4K and 5K shots are looking pretty good when rendering with the Render Settings turned to "quater" resolution but the 2K shot are looking terrible then. Could the long render time be a problem with how after effects handels the de-bayering of the R3D Files?

  • Effects to Premiere Rendering clarification

Guys. I did a premiere pro cs5 project import into AE CS5. THat project had a few avi clips with no effects on them. Now, I applied one simple effect in after effects, to reduce the video noise. Then I rendered the clip by saving it as an avi clip. I then imported that "denoised" clip back into Premiere, and it's messed up. There are black Boxes flickering every few seconds halfway across the screen when I try to play it back in Premiere. Also the render bar in Premiere is now yellow for that denoised clip? Also when I play the avi clip in a media player or vlc pplayer, it plays fine.
What is the best way for me to import a few video clips into After Effects from Premiere, apply an effect or to in AE, then export it back to premiere for further project work? It's just that If I do all my effects in Premiere first, then import whole completed project into AFter Effects, none of my Premiere PLugins work in After Effects. Isn't the whole point of these programs to smoothly transition projects between themselves? I also have encore and usually i would export just to encore. But this messes up my flow of things. What are some of your methodologies for creating a project that has plugins applied from both premeire and AE as well as the final output going to Encore? Thanks

Confusion, confusion! You need to get a few things straight first.
AVI just like MOV is a container format and can contain anything from legacy Windows CoDecs to AVCHD.
You cannot render to some of these formats from AE, since internally they use specific video processing that AE can't provide.
There are no "simple effects" - going AE always results in the footage being fully decoded, transformed to uncompressed RGB color and then the effect is applied.
Re-encoding afterwards happens based on the full RGB data, not the original source.
Hence, all of what you see is probably normal, with the exception of the random black blips. If your Premiere project is set to AVCHD, since there is no way to redner it directly from AE, you will always end up with an intermediary file in anotehr CoDec that requires a second conform in Premiere. It may play realtime, regardless, but then again it may not. Therefore the line is yellow, not green to inform you. The evil blips of black you see are probably due to unsuitable compression settings when outputing from AE. This in turn may lead Premiere to mess up. On the other hand, they could already appear in AE, but you never so them because you didn't run RAM previews or your footage interpretation was wrong, so fields were suppressed. Impossible to tell from your little info.
Isn't the whole point of these programs to smoothly transition projects between themselves?
It is not. Compositing and editing are different workflows. Some of what I said above applies here - different processing pipelines for different priorities and workflows. That doesn't preclude going back and forth, but it's not really the point. Your problem is that you seem to have no masterplan (no offense) and need to adapt your workflow. you need to decide on what to do where and when. Based on your comments, you are doing too much, going too far ahead in Premiere and going to AE too late in the process, so any project conversion can only be a lossy process. There are basically only 2 "good" workflows for removing your noise:
    a) Apply all corrective effects before even beginning to edit, import corrected clips as fianls in Premiere. Downsides:
You may process footage that you never will use later
Duplicate footage = lots of drivespace required
You lose native acceleration in Premiere
    b) Do a proper rough cut - edit the clips, but without transitions and effects, only defining the timing. Allow overlap for adding fades and effects later, open the sequence in AE, do effects, transfer rendered files back to Prmiere, replacing the original unprocessed soursce. finish the whoile piece. Downsides:
Last minute changes will require jumping back to AE
    You may miss footage pieces
Overall composition hard to judge without transitions and audio in AE
So take a pick which to you is the two of the lesser evils. how you get your files across is anotehr matter, but since you didn't provide any details about your current process, I'll settle for a generic "anything from Dynamic Link to Quicktiem fiels wizth lossless compression (Animation, PNG). Feel free to post your follow-up questions on that one.

  • After Effects crashes while rendering

    Hi all,
We have been experiencing regular crashes while rendering on 9 different Mac systems.
We would start the render and then, all of a sudden, AE would crash.
Trying to restart, AE hangs at MediaCore initializing.
We actually need to do a hard shutdown to get the machine to reboot.
    So my question is:
Could AE not release the media cache upon crashing thus blocking us to restart the app without having to reboot the machine?
We are running AE in multiproc mode with 4 GB memory allocation, which actually uses 3 procs.
I have tried bringing the memory allocation down to 3 GB on some of the systems, but it doesn't seems to make much difference.
Finally, we do not crash every time we render. It is very random.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Rene

    Hey Todd,
Sorry for the late reply, answers below:
What exact version of After Effects? 12.2.0.52 but we also use CS 5.5 (mainly for the feature where you can send your camera information to C4D, something that is not in the CC version... pitty)
Have you installed the recent updates? This is the latest update...
What operating system? Mac OSX 10.8.5
Tell us about your computer hardware. 2 x 6 cores CPUS, 24 Gb RAM, ATI Radeon HD 5870 GFX, 5 internal drives (4 of them are part of internal hardware raid with internal raid controller)
What versions of drivers for your graphics hardware do you have installed? No CUDA since it is ATI, 01.00.436
Do you have any third-party I/O hardware : AJA Kona 3G with either driver 1.47 or 1.49
What kind(s) of source footage? When telling about your source footage, tell us about the codecs, not just the container types. It is a combination of a bunch of them: Animation codec into .mov wrapper, tga sequences, png files, we render to uncompressed .mov files for air.
If you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)? No, just the beach ball of death...
What were you doing when the problem occurred? They mainly occur when rendering sequences.
Has this ever worked before? It is very intermittent and does not happen every day. Plus, since we are in crunch time, AE is being used 24/7, so that may not help either.
What other software are you running? C4D, Photoshop, Illustrator, both in the CC and CS6 or CS5.5
Do you have any third-party effects or codecs installed? We have sapphire and Knoll lens flare, but crashes happens if we use them or not.
Are you using OpenGL features in After Effects? Not to my knowledge.
Does the problem only happen with your final output, RAM preview, or both? Render
Are you using Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing? Yes we do, most of the machines have it set with 4Gb memory allocation, but others have it set to 3 Gb.
Are you using the ray-traced 3D renderer? No, we are not.
If the problem is with output, give your exact output settings (both render setting and output module settings). Unfortunately, I do not have this as our artists are working and I cannot really stop them as we have things to get out to air for early morning. I will get this info next time we have the issue.
What is the exact sequence of steps that you are taking? Just sending the render out to the queue and starting and it will either crash to desktop or stay there doing nothing.
My biggest concern is why can't we just restart the app. It will always lock up while initializing MediaCore. We have our mediacaches set for 42 Gb on our main bootup drive, which is big enough to handle it. And after the crash, when we try to reboot, the machine will get to the grey Mac screen and just sit there. Have to hard shutdown the machine to have it come back up...
Let me know if you need more info.
    Thanks,
    Rene

  • After Effects - Problems with rendering - please help :(

    Hello everybody,
i am sorry about my bad english, but i hope    you can help me somehow. I pruchased the Productions Pro Premium from Adobe some time ago.
I created some Layers in Photoshop CS4 and  animated them    in After Effects CS4. After that, i rendered a raw file out and imported it    back into After Effects CS4 to save render and preview time. Then the    problems started... my After Effects became laggy and didnt respond for    3-4Seconds. After starting rendering, my PC waited for 10-20 minutes until he    started to render... and longer and later i unchecked the box Write XMP data    in the render settings and the problem has gone. Do you know what i did    wong or why that happens? It has something to do with my losless rendered    .Avis and XMP Metadata... the strange thing is, that this doesnt happens always and with every clips, but maybe there is an anwser for me...
I got a W7 Os and my PC is very strong with    an i7 cpu and 6gbs of ram..
I hope you can help me..
