Every file has staff and everyone "read only" privileges

Just upgraded to SL with a clean install. Copied over all my documents. Now it seems like every single file has staff and everyone read only privileges (in addition to me having read & write).
How can this be? Under System Preferences, Sharing, I have absolutely nothing checked.
Anyone know anything about this? Thanks.

these are standard permissions in both leopard and snow leopard. any new files you create in your home directory will have those permissions.

this has nothing to do with sharing.

Hello mbennjr, if you have problem with update or permissions firefox the better way is to '''download and install the new version'''.
    1. Download a copy of the latest firefox from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
    2. '''Trash''' the current Firefox application to do a clean install.
    3. Install the version that you have downloaded.

  • I updated to snow leopard recently and when i turned on my macbook every file from pictures and music was on my desktop.. are these copies? is there an easy way to put them where they belong like music with itunes, pictures in iphoto and so on

Hi, I updated to snow leopard recently and when I turned my macbook back on icons from every file of pictures and music i have were all over my desktop
how can i get them to all go to their programs like music to itunes, pictures to iphoto,  do I have to do it individually? thanks for any help

If the icons have a black arrow bottom left corner, then the icons are just aliases, not the Application itself. You can move those icons to the Trash.

  • Permit user to administrate Model AND have read-only attributes

This issue concerns SQL Server Master Data Services 2012
I have a scenario where the same user is handling data and doing version management. Now I want to make one attribute in one specific entity read-only as I want to make sure the attribute is never changed.
The problem is, as soon as I set the read-only privilege on the attribute, the user
loses all administrative rights on the entire model. This, of course, includes version management.
I've tried working around the issue by making sure the user has explicit update permissions on both the model and the entity (and all attributes except the one I need read-only). But the result is the same.
    Does anyone know a workaround?

    Hi,
I think if you explicitly grant the update permissions, it should work. According to the MSDN doc. Could you please check if the user belongs to other hierarchy?
When a member belongs to multiple hierarchies
Two or more hierarchies can contain the same member.
•If one hierarchy node is assigned Update permission and another is assigned Read-only, then the members in the node are Read-only.
•If one hierarchy node is assigned Update or Read-only permission and another node is assigned Deny, then the members in the node are not displayed.

  • Permission not granted on files and become Read Only

Even though the files are not marked read only they open that way on any other computer. Has anyone had this problem and how did you resolve it?

  • All of my files in OSX Lion are read only, why?

I've just upgraded to a new Mac Mini which has OSX Lion, Version 10.7.3. I don't use the admin login for security reasons, I'm using a separate user login. When I want to modify a document (delete a document/folder or move a document into a folder) I have to type in the admin login every time. I've looked in the Get Info window of some, and the Sharing and Permissions all say Read Only.
Why are all my files Read Only? Is there a way to make everything in my login Read and Write without manually changing them all individually?

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy – do not type – the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • Error in saving a theme file as it is a read-only file

I work in a large, networked company with lots of workstation security.  I am not a local admin, and the software was installed for me by an admin.  I am trying to change a default in the recording setup, but I get this error everytime I try to change it.  Our tech support has gone through and made sure that the attributes in the whole Captivate directory are not read-only.  I still get the error message.  Ideas?  Thanks!

If you have an issue using the Captivate software that you think is an issue with the software itself you should post in the Captivate forum.

I recommend doublechecking the access status of the file(s) involved.

  • Error when opening XLSX file with Excel 2003 SP3, file does open but in read only mode with temporary name

I am using Excel 2003 SP3 and have the Office 2007 compatibility pack installed.  When I open Office 2007 formatted Excel files (XSLX) directly in Windows Explorer, I receive the following error if I do not have Excel already opened:
"Windows cannot find '<path to file>'.  Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.  To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."
Even though I receive the error, the file does open; however, it opens in Read Only mode with a name such as "Xl0000024.xls".  The number seems to increment up each time it happens.
Now here is the strange part.  If I have Excel already open and try to open the file in Windows Explorer, the file opens fine in Modify mode with no error and with the correct file name.
I Googled the error I was getting and found KB211494.  It says I should uncheck the box in Options on the General tab that says "Ignore other applications", but this box is already unchecked in my case.  Any other ideas?  This is
really frustrating as a small percentage of our company has upgraded to Office 2007 with the rest still on Office 2003.

This may be a file association problem.  To solve that:
    In Windows 7:
    1. Right-click the file,
    2. Select "Open With"
    select [Your Program Here]
    3. Check always use this program.
    In Windows XP:
    1. Locate the file as you have described above
    2. Right click the file
    3. Select Open with from the pop-up menu
    4. Click Choose default program…
    5. Select Excel in the Recommended Programs box
    6. Check Always use the selected program to open this kind of file
    7. Click on OK.
    1.  Make Excel not available from Office 2007 listed under Programs and Features in Control Panel.
    2. Take a registry backup using the steps given here
    3. In the registry editor window expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and navigate to .xls right and delete it.
    4. Exit Registry Editor
    5. Undo Step 1 to make Excel available.
    6.  Restart the computer and verify it the issue is fixed.

  • Best Way to Override 'Everyone - Read Only' using ACLs

Hi, let me first clarify that I'm not an 'official' network administrator, I'm just the only one in a small design office able to attempt to figure this stuff out.
We are needing to upgrade our security in a small office (5-7 users, 1 server running OSX Server 10.4.4).
We've been working great since OSX Server 10.3.x using standard POSIX privileges setup as follows:
    Owner: Our_Server - R/W
    Group: OurGroup - R/W
    Everyone: None
We've been able to share files great as we're all in the same group (OurGroup). No problems.
Unfortunately, we now need to add a higher level of security for some incoming freelance workers. Essentially, we need to give them access to only certain folders UNDER our main Share Point directory. But we need to retain all of the freedom we've always had for the entire Shared directory.
From my understanding, the only way to do this is by using ACL's and a different group for the freelancers. I've setup a TEST directory to try this on. I've almost got it setup to work the way we want, but now am experiencing what I've discovered to be one of the drawbacks of using ACL's - the "Inherit Permissions from Parent" feature of AFP is no longer an option.
So using this method, new files added by default pick up the standard POSIX permissions, which allow Read access to Everyone. And I have to 'replicate' the behavior of 'Owner' and 'Group' that we had working before using POSIX or the group would end up Read Only.
    - Any way to simulate the inherited permission of 'Everyone: None" using ACLs?
    - Is there an easier/better way to allow access to only certain sub-folders of our main Share Point for a different group (FreelanceGroup)?
    - Any way to do this while keeping our good working POSIX model?
    - What should my POSIX access settings be set now when using ACLs?
    - How dangerous is having 'Everyone: Read Access' really? We have guest access disabled, appropriate firewalls, etc.?
Thanks a lot. I hope I'm approaching this properly. I'm open to any tips. We just need to make sure nothing 'appears' to change too much in the workflow we have grown accustomed to (within reason).

If you haven't already, you may find my ACL Tips post helpful: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1696702
My best advice would be to concentrate on defining ACLs for the groups of users for whom access should be granted (Allow rules). These can define inheritance for newly created files and folders, and you don't have the limit of having to think about just one group and everyone else. Remember that the POSIX "everyone" group is actually "everyone else" - that is, any valid user (guest if guest access is enabled) who does NOT match the owner or who is NOT a member of the POSIX group. The way that POSIX permissions are calculated, the connecting user is always granted ownership if possible, then group membership (primary group first, membership lookup by GID second) if that fails. Failing the two, the everyone else permissions are returned.
Here's an example that highlights the difference:
There is a group called "everyone" - that's actually all users, guests included, if guest access is enabled. This group is NOT the POSIX everyone else field. Rather, if you grant an ACL deny for everyone, then that covers all users, not just those for whom you don't have an ACL defined!
Further, there's an "authed users" group, which is the group of all authenticated users (and it never includes guests, even if guest access is enabled). Like the "everyone" group, membership is calculated by GUID by memberd. So you can thinnk of these two groups as "smart groups."
Since the "smart groups" have membership controlled by memberd and GUID values, it's wise to only use them when defining ACL entries. Neither should be used for the group value of the POSIX group field. Either membership calculation will fail, or the "everyone else" POSIX field may never need to be consulted.
As to the missing "inherit from parent" feature, the story is just the opposite: ACLs actually give you better inheritance than that feature ever did. For example, ACLs each support inheritance with the file_inherit, directory_inherit, only_inherit, and limit_inherit controls. For each entry, you can have a group or single user's ACL entry apply to new child files, new child folders, or both. Further, you can control inheritance on a per-folder level, and manage how deeply that inheritance goes (limit_inherit) or whether the permissions are only inheritable.
For example, your example POSIX group permissions would look like this using two ACLs:
    ourgroup allow readattr,readextattr,readsecurity,list,search,read,execute, write,delete,append,deletechild,add_file,add_subdirectory,writeextattr,writeattr,file_inherit,directoryinherit
Again, my ACL Tips post explains more, and my answer to this post clarifies how new files, copied files, and moved files/folders get their POSIX and ACL permissions: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3188259&#3188259
    Hope this helps!

  • "Everyone - Read Only" doesn't work

I often drag-and-drop, or directly save, PDFs to my Admin user's Drop Box from my Standard User account. As expected, I'm often unable to open these from the Admin account without first modifying permissions.
However, what now takes the biscuit is that even changing permissions often no longer allows me to open the files in the Admin account. Right now, I have two files with two Names in their Permissions list: Standard User and "everyone". Standard is set to Read And Write; Everyone is set to Read Only. However, on double-clicking the file in question I get that infuriating message: "You do not have permission to open the document foo.pdf." Oddly, even setting "everyone" to Read And Write doesn't fix this.
Snow Leopard was a clean install.
Is this just something to endure until Apple gets its thumb out?

that's not "as expected". you should have full read+write privileges for anything dropped into your drop box. something is wrong with permissions on the drop box of your admin account.
log into the admin account and run the following terminal commands to set permissions on the drop box.
    chmod -RN ~/Public/Drop Box
    chmod 733 ~/Public/Drop Box
    chmod +a "`id -un` allow list,addfile,search,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,readsecurity,writesecurity,chown,file_inherit,directoryinherit" ~/Public/Drop Box
from now on you should have read+write right to any future files dropped into your drop box. but *do not* save files there directly. that will not work properly. drag and drop only.

  • My shared files are all set as read only. How do I sort this out?

I am trying to set up our iMac and MacBook so that they share files.
In System Preferences/Sharing I have set the File sharing to ON, I have selected which folders are to be shared and I have set it so that everyone can read and write the files.
In the iMac files when you check various properties NONE are set as read only, however, when the files are access from the MacBook they are all READ ONLY.
What am I doing wrong and how do I sort this out so that I can access files from either computer and amend and save them without having to change file names?
    Please help!!
    Karl

I have had similar problems and have given up trying to use the "everyone" user setting.  Instead, to give shared access to a folder I add specific users and then set their access level.  To add users to a folders sharing profile click on the [+] button at the bottom of the Users column.
