Every link opens a new window even when this should open a new tab

Lately, whenever I click on a link a new window opens (11 happenings of firefox just to get to this page). In options I have selected open new tab instead of new window. Deselecting or reselecting does not change this. Restarting firefox did not help either. Also for some reason if I click the dot button on the keyboard, I get the greater than sign.

This issue can be caused by an extension or plugin that isn't working properly.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See:
* [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
* [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Tabs opening as new windows even when I click open in a new tab

    All of a sudden links that normally opened as new tabs are now opening as new windows. Even when I specifically say open as a new tab it still opens as a new window. I have checked the settings in the tab option so it should be opening them as new tabs. it is highly frustrating!

    Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

    If you have iPhoto '09, you cannot browse or restore seleted items from your backups.  See the pink box in #15 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
    Mail should work, however, per the blue box there.

  • Whenever I open a new window (including when I first open Firefox), the "add-ons update" window pops up. How do I keep this from happening?

    This just started this week.

    Go to the Tools menu and click on Add-ons, then see if there are any add-on updates pending. If so, install the updates.
    If you no longer want to be notified about new add-on updates, you can go to the Update tab in your Firefox Preferences "Advanced" panel and uncheck the Add-ons option. See [[Options window - Advanced panel]] for details.

  • I recently updated to version 5.0, however, when I open up a link in a new window, there is no address in the new window's address bar, just a blank box.

    Hello gogotutu
    In the [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/awesome-bar-find-your-bookmarks-history-and-tabs#os=win7&browser=fx17 Location bar], type [http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config about:config ]and press '''Enter'''.
    The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. Click I'll be careful, I promise!, to continue to the about:config page.
    In the Search field, type [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.link.open_newwindow browser.link.open_newwindow]
    double-click and put as a value '''1''' , click OK to save it.
    do the same with '''browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external''' , again put '''1''' as a value(it is -1 by default).
    check also, always in about:config, the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction] and put as value''' 0''' .

    No; it means that the computer has adware. Click here and follow the instructions, or if there’s a type of adware not covered by them on the computer, these ones. If you're willing to use a tool to remove it(you don't need to, but may find it easier), you can instead run Adware Medic; this link is a direct download.

    The Downloads Window cannot be accessed either.
    This is very annoying. Is this a bug? Or is there a fix.

    If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
    The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
    Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

  • FF cant open a page in a new window, even from rightclick menu and if tried ff cannot exit correctly

    as described above, cant open anything in a new window, even from right click menu.......... open in new tab is not checked in settings.
    also the flash plug in crashes all the time

    I have these problems, as well, but after disabling and re-enabling extensions and plug-ins one by one, it appears these issues are related to the Java Console 6.0.22 extension update. With this extension disabled and the older Java 6.0.20 enabled, I could open a new window and FF could exit correctly even with the updated Java Deployment Toolkit 6.0.220.4 and Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U22 6.0.220.4 plug-ins enabled.
    The question is whether FF is conflicting with the Java Console update or the Java Console update is the true culprit. I'm leaning toward the latter.

  • Tripadvisor opens a window even though option to open tabs is set

    I have the option set to open links in a new tab rather than a new window. This seems to work perfectly except in one situation. Tripadvisor will often open a new window about 'other suitable hotels', always hidden behind the other windows, the only indication being the icon on the task bar. This window opens of its own accord, not directly due to my actions, at least not because I have clicked a link. If I don't spot the task bar icon and close the main Firefox window first then the Tripadvisor window becomes the default and loads at the next startup. Thankfully I can find all my other tabs under recently closed windows, but it's a hassle.
    How does Tripadvisor cause this to happen, in contradiction to the options, and when everything else seems to follow the setting? Is it because it 'opens itself'? Can it be stopped?

    By default, Firefox diverts most links that open in new windows, and automatic pop-up windows, to a new tab. However, if the pop-up specifies its size or modifies what toolbars are displayed, Firefox defers to the site so that in case it's a dialog related to the page, it will display as intended.
    You can force Firefox to treat ALL pop-up windows the same, whether they have these special feature or not. Doing that requires a visit to the about:config preferences editor. Apologies for what will seem like excess detail, but there are 3 related settings so I want to list them together.
    In a new tab, type or paste <strong>about:config</strong> and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    In the filter box, type or paste <strong>link.o</strong> and pause while the list is filtered.
    Double click these to modify the values as desired (especially the second one):
    <strong>(A) browser.link.open_newwindow</strong>
    '''3 = divert new window to a new tab''' (<u>default</u>) (checked*)<br>
    2 = allow link to open a new window (unchecked*)<br>
    1 = force new window into same tab
    <strong>*</strong> First checkbox in Options &gt; Tabs
    <strong>(B) browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction</strong> - for links in Firefox tabs
    <strong>0 = apply the setting under (A) to ALL new windows (even script windows)</strong><br>
    2 = apply the setting under (A) to normal windows, but NOT to script windows with features (<u>default</u>)<br>
    1 = override the setting under (A) and always use new windows
    <strong>(C) browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external</strong> - for links in other programs
    <strong>-1 = apply the setting under (A) to external links</strong> (<u>default</u>)<br>
    3 = open external links in a <u>new tab</u> in the last active window<br>
    2 = open external links in a <u>new window</u><br>
    1 = open external links in the <u>last active tab</u> replacing the current page
    Can you tame those popups?

  • Whenever I launch a new Google window, Google immediately re-opens all other windows I happen to have open but minimized. I then have to either close or re-minimize each window, one at a time. What a pain!!

    Just to address the last point: check your History menu to see whether you have the Restore Previous Session option and use that if you can. If that is grayed out or doesn't restore everything, check the Recently Closed Windows and Recently Closed Tabs lists for other pages.
    The unwanted window may be generated by an add-on. Try disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
    In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable.
    Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    Any improvement?
    Here are some other things to check:
    (1) user.js file that changes Firefox startup behavior and overrides your preferences. This article describes how to track that down and delete it if you have one: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]].
    (2) Possible hijacked shortcut. Check the "target" of the desktop icon you use to start Firefox to see whether it lists the unwanted page. To do that:
    right-click the icon > Properties > Shortcut tab
    For 64-bit Windows 7, the Target should be no more and no less than this:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
    (3) Possible undisclosed bundle items. If you have installed any free software recently, check your Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a program for surprises. If you click the "Installed on" column head to group by date, it is easier to spot bundled junk. Remove everything suspicious or unrecognized.
    (4) Supplemental clean up scans. Our support article lists tools other Firefox users have found helpful: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].
    Hopefully that cures it.

    i have sync'ed a folder of photos from my other laptop to my iphone 4, i couldnt copy it from the iphone to my new laptop, even when i go through as normal internal storage the folder doesnt appears

    Correct. The iphone is not a storage/backup device.  The photo sync is one way -  computer to iphone.
    You need to copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.
