Every Other File Unreadable on Export.

Whenever I try to export photos from iPhoto to a Flash Drive to use on my TV, digital photo frame or friend's Windows computer, iPhoto seems to export two files for each photo - one is the normal photo file and one seems to be some sort of copy of it with the prefix  ._  before each filename. Obviously these additional files can't be read by TVs or photo frames, meaning that when I view a slideshow on these other devices, every other photo comes up as an unreadable file error message.
Yet if I put the Flash Drive back in the Mac, these other files can't be seen and therefore can't be deleted.
The Flash Drive has been formatted as a FAT32 disk in order to try and make sure it's compatible.
Anyone know what this second file is for and how to get around this problem.
My Mac is a 17" iMac - PowerPC G4 - 1.25 GHz - 768 MB RAM - running 10.5.8.
iPhoto is iPhoto 4.0.3.
P.S. I realise it's an ancient iPhoto version I'm using, but I did upgrade to iPhoto 6 a while back, but was disappointed with the Slideshow features compared to version 4 so I Time Machined back.
(This thread has the details of those issues, though I got no replies):

Any thoughts or advice on my current problem most gratefully received.

Thanks for the swift reply Terence.
Based on your post I've done a bit more digging. I gather resource forks are also known as DS Store files and that I need to delete them to solve my problem.
However I've now downloaded a number of freeware apps and tried deleting the relevant DS files, but still they show when I put my USB Flash Drive into the USB port on my TV.
I've tried using Onyx, Cocktail and DSWipe and all seem to show that they've successfully deleted the files, but when I plug the flash disc into my TV they're still there. It's as if OS-X automatically rebuilds new DS Store files the moment the old ones are deleted.
What am I doing wrong?

    Can you connect to a wifi source on the device? Enable wifi in settings on the device itself. If you don't have wifi at home, there may be a local hotspot you can use for this.
    The reason this happens is carriers don't want people downloading huge files that would slow their network as well as eat up your data plan.

  • My 22 MB pdf file "Failed to export to Word."

    I have tried several times to convert a 22 MB pdf file to Word, but I receive this error message every time: "File failed to export to Microsoft Word.  There was an unexpected problem."  No further explanation is available.  I know my ExportPDF is working, because I have tested several other smaller files.  I even tried using a different browser (Chrome and IE) and home and work computers.  I checked the permissions of the document and I have all that are available.  The pdf document seems to upload OK although it takes a few minutes because it's large, but then I receive the error message.  I got the original file from an internet site (legitimate).  Any ideas?

    Try disabling OCR with these instructions: http://forums.adobe.com/docs/DOC-3062 to see if that helps.
    If it doesn't, please open the PDF in Adobe Reader and choose File > Properties.  Let us know what it says next to 'Application' and 'PDF Producer'

  • Every pdf file in my laptop has been converted into an unreadable Word file. Help!

    Every pdf file in my laptop has been converted into an unreadable Word file.
    This happened while I was trying to convert a large pdf file to Word using Adobe export pdf, which I purchased recently. When I try to export a large pdf file, I get a message "An error occurred while trying to access the service."
    The inability to convert a file from pdf to Word is an annoyance after I spent $19.95 for export pdf. But the making of all my pdf files unreadable is a disaster.

    I suspect that isn't connected. Start Adobe Reader, use File > Open for these PDFs. Do they open?  (I suspect it's just double clicking that does it, which isn't the only way or best way to open files).

  • Animated gif files not working in FF5 ok in every other browser

    Hi .
    I am having problems getting animated gifs to play in firefox 5 i am using a photo gallery script to show these files it works in every other browser i have access to (most of them on Linux and windows Xp and win7 ) if i use FF5 as a file manager and navigate to the files they run but not from a web page this is only with firefox 4 and 5 not got previous to 4 to test .

    Right . this looks like it may be a problem with the way FF5 is handling various methods of viewing images i use the following code .
    <pre><nowiki><a class="thumbnail" href="#thumb"><img src="photos/IMG_7039 EOS-1D Mark III copy.jpg" width="100px" height="75px" border="0"><span><img src="photos/Animations/IMG_7039 EOS-1D Mark III copy.gif"></span></a></nowiki></pre>
    along with css .
    <pre><nowiki>(
    .gallerycontainer{
    position: relative;
    /*Add a height attribute and set to largest image's height to prevent overlaying*/
    .thumbnail img{
    border: 1px solid blue;
    margin: 0 5px 5px 0;
    .thumbnail:hover{
    background-color: transparent;
    .thumbnail:hover img{
    border: 1px solid blue;
    .thumbnail span{ /*CSS for enlarged image*/
    position: fixed;
    background-color: lightyellow;
    padding: 5px;
    left: -600px;
    border: 1px dashed gray;
    visibility: hidden;
    color: black;
    text-decoration: none;
    .thumbnail span img{ /*CSS for enlarged image displays the large image*/
    border-width: 4;
    padding: 12px;
    .thumbnail:hover span{ /*CSS for enlarged image*/
    visibility: visible;
    top: 0;
    left: 230px; /*position where enlarged image should offset horizontally */
    z-index: 50;
    )</nowiki></pre>
    to create the gallery now if i navigate directly to the dir with the gif images in they work ok but if i use the gallery method they fail .
    Tried safe mode no addons no change ..

  • How to read a text file and only output every other line?

    I am just writing a program that reads a file but outputs only every other line. Any ideas...please? thanks

    I'd start with something like this and expand on it as you go:
    File file = <whatever>;
    BufferedReader in = null;
    try {
        in = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(file));
        int i = -1;
        for (String line = null; (line = in.readLine()) != null; ) {
            if ((++i % 2) == 0) {
                System.out.println(line);
    } catch (IOException e) {
        e.printStackTrace();
    } finally {
        if (in != null) {
            try {
                in.close();
            } catch (IOException e) {
    }Shaun

  • AE is grabbing an unimported file and playing it every other frame

    Ive been working on an illustrator comp in AE CS3 with no problems until i increased the project length past one frame. I interpreted the footage to loop so i could animate with it, only to find that AE is playing a file that i never once imported, every other frame. Its those colored tv bars with a black sign in the upper left with the name of a pdf file that was sitting in the same folder as my comp. Not only that but its playing extremely slow.
    I removed the offending pdf, created a new project and brought the original illustrator comp in to see if it would still appear and its gone, but now i have no way i getting my project back and no idea if this is going to happen again.

    Sounds like you may have imported the Illustrator document and the PDF as an image sequence, rather than as individual images.  Did they have sequential names?
    In your original (problematic) comp, replace the original file with the Illustrator document, but ensure the "Image Sequence" checkbox is not checked in the import dialog box.

  • Exported .ics files unreadable by *utlook

    I have a need to export my calendar to a W*ndows machine at work, running Outlook. Outlook says that it can read .ics files, so I exported one of my calendars and tried it. In typically helpful fashion, Outlook said that there was "a problem" with my .ics file, but of course gave no clue what kind of problem.
    Are there any issues about version numbers or format variants on .ics files that I should know about? Is there another way of exporting an entire calendar from iCal such that another app can import it?
    Thanks

    every time i sent an email with 1 attachment, the recipient receives my attachment plus ATT00047.htm or some other file. why is that? how do i stop that?

    We have the same problem every time we send out an email with attachments.
    BTW, the ATT prefix on every file has nothing to do with you ATT card. It's just the naming convention used by Mail.app for ATTachment.
    Now, can someone tell us how to fix this problem?

  • Wpdomain.db file gets corrupted every other day

    Hello
    Our secondary wpdomain.db database gets corrupted every other day. Right now we have up to five people connecting to it at one time using multiple instances of ConsoleOne. How many users can we have connect to it at one time?
    Chris T.

    Hi,
    I guess I need to know what OS you are hosting the databases on. OES? Plain SLES? Sort of depends on what is serving up what and who is consuming it. But generally, you MUST disable opportunistic locking / client side caching on the CIFS connections used to access the domain databases. That is, no doubt, what is killing them.
    Two approaches:
    1. Fix the problem on the CIFS / SAMBA server side. Then client settings don't matter. Our domains are on pure SLES, not OES, and domains are shared via SAMBA. Clients incluse other SLES boxes, Windows clients, etc. So we nipped it in the bud by preventing it on the SAMBA server. If the server is using plain old SAMBA, the corresponding share section in /etc/samba/smb.conf should be set up similar to
    Code:
    [grpwise]
    comment = Transfer
    inherit acls = Yes
    path = /grpwise
    read only = No
    oplocks = False
    level2oplocks = False
    You can configure some of these setting globally, but I like to specify them explicitly - then you know what is actually going to happen. And you don't mess with other shares exposed by the server where client side caching / op locks "might" be OK.
    2. You can also solve the problem on the CIFS client side ( in your case, the remote servers mounting the CIFS share ) by disabling oplocks:
    cat /proc/fs/cifs/OplockEnabled
    It will report "1" meaning its IS enabled. That's bad! You can disable Op Locks easily:
    echo 0 > /proc/fs/cifs/OplockEnabled
    Generally, under high load, the CIFS client will fall apart with this enabled. The number of pending locks piles up and all the client does is service the locks. We have web server fronting a common CIFS share, you NEED to do the above to the systems mounting CIFS shares.
    Doing either or both ( on all systems hosting / consuming the shares ). I don't trust people to set up their clients correctly, so I opted for #1. The next day the problems stopped, order was restored to the Universe.
    ( This is analogous to, on Windows clients talking to Netware, File Commit = ON, File Caching = OFF, Level 2 OpLocks = OFF, etc. )

  • Looping through text files loads all 2014 files correctly, but 2013 files only loads every other row

    Hello all. I am once again stumped and would very much appreciate any help.
    I have a folder with many text files such as this...
    A 2013-03-31.txt
    A 2013-06-30.txt
    A 2013-09-30.txt
    A 2013-12-31.txt
    A 2014-03-31.txt
    A 2014-06-30.txt
    A 2014-09-30.txt
    B 2013-03-31.txt
    B 2013-06-30.txt
    B 2013-09-30.txt
    B 2013-12-31.txt
    B 2014-03-31.txt
    B 2014-06-30.txt
    B 2014-09-30.txt
    …and so on…
    and I'm loading all of the files beginning with A to an existing table in SQL Server. I'm loading the data as is to a staging table, no data type conversions, and I add only two derived columns. I have a loop to accomplish this, and it's working perfectly
    except for one detail. All of the files in 2013 load every other row. All of the 2014 files load all rows as intended.
    Any idea what would cause this? All files are being loaded using the same loop, same variables, same everything. My enumerator on the for each loop is Foreach File. The DataRowsToSkip property on the flat file connection manager is 0. I'm not sure where
    to look next. I need all rows in all files to be loaded.
    Forgot to mention that there is a difference between the 2013 and 2014 files. The 2014 files have 8 additional columns. I suspect this is causing my issue, just not sure what to do about it.
    Thanks for any help you can provide!
    WeeLass

    In SSIS 2012 and above these additional columns would not cause a failure, but looks like lead to you having impartial loads.
    I suggest you create two loops, one for one metadata - files from 2014 and another for 2013 ones.

  • Hex 00 in every other byte while reading a unix file

    Hi, I am having trouble reading certain files on the unix server. When I read one of them, I am finding that hex 00 have been inserted in between the characters (e.g. if # represents 00 then "byte" appears as "b#y#t#e#")
    I do not have this problem with other files in the same directory.
    When I login to unix and look at these files, they all look fine.
    Can anyone tell me what might be causing this and what I need to do to fix this?

  • How do i find a file in finder exported to youtube using motion 5?

    i just tried to upload a video from motion 5 to youtube. it transcoded/exported the file and failed uploading to youtube but i can't find the file. how do i find the file so i can upload it manually?
    side note, a second question, this is the only way i could export the video that would make it a normal size (650MB), every other regular "export movie" selection ended up being 10GB. what settings do i use to make sure it's a normal size? the video really isn't that high quality and i have no idea why it would be that big.
    any help is appreciated.

    What do you mean by "normal" size?  What is the frame size, frame rate, and codec you're editing in the Timeline?

    I fixed the problem.. but it was very, very strange. I had a very long section for credits and set the line spacing to 1.0.. for some reason this caused it. I removed it, and it worked fine. I put it back, and I couldn't preview or play the video.
    I don't know why that could cause that big of a problem, but it did..

    Many of you have encountered similar issues, and I've scoured the forums with no resolve to my specific issue. Crashing every time I go to export in Premiere or ME. Using latest versions of both through CC--8.2
    On Windows 7, I've looked into the AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Media Encoder/<version #> solution--that folder is empty. Don't know why. Hidden files are turned on.

Not sure it would, as I completed a project with at least 12 transitions last week, albeit much shorter than this one. 3 mins vs. 1 hr).
    Yes I'm using OpenCL.
    Someone help.
    Thanks.

    No, just that something went wonky with that one.  Try the Film Dissolve instead.  If that also has a problem, then it might be the clips and not the transition which is the cause.
