Every so often, the dock/computer "freezes"

Every once in a while my macbook pro "freezes".  I put freezes in quotes because I can still move the mouse and move windows on screen, but the dock won't appear, and if it is already up (by turning dock hiding off) then I can't select anything.  This happens randomly, although usually after closing a program.
I also have probelms whenever I go into launchpad.  I can't click on anything and I can't click out of launchpad.  The only solution I have found to either one of these problems is restarting the computer, which is a pain because this happens at least once a day.
I am running OSX 10.7.3
Thanks for any help.

I have the same problem. I suggest just rebooting. Let the Mac rest for a few minutes (3-4 minutes) and then start again.
Mac seems to need a restart after som usage, perhaps 2-3 days.
Reinstalling OS ? no. never. Let the Window users do it. They love to restart , and to test all kind of tricks, change the registry etc

can i sync my iPod to my home computer through home sharing or do I have to sync it every time to the home computer?

There is no such thing  as "home sharing sync".
iOS devices can be synced via the cable or if running iOS5 or later via Wi-Fi.
iPods (nano's, classics) must be synced via the cable.

  • Finder and the Dock keep freezing...

I've read through all the the threads i can handle on here, and i've also tried every trick i know to get things working right. i've trashed all my preferences, did disk repairs, tried the apple hardware test. No luck.
My problems include the finder freezing occasionally, mainly when trying to access files, but sometimes just in the background while i'm in other applications. i will notice the beach ball spinning when i hover over the desktop, but not in applications. its seems the finder freezes in the background sometimes, but also when trying to preview files, or juts moving from one directory to another. The dock often freezes, I have it in the pop up mode, where it auto hides, and sometimes it won't unhide, and then it won't magnify either.
i try to restart finder, and it won't relaunch.
i also sometimes notice that random things change sometimes, random things were missing from my dock at one point. it seems something is wrong with the finder and the dock.
One other bit of info, the other day, I randomly noticed that spotlight had stopped indexing files as i tried to search for something. it showed no results, i opened finder and went and found it myself. finder worked, but spotlight didnt at that moment. then i'm sure finder froze later on.
My problems so far have been somewhat relieved by trashing the preferences, but the dock just froze again, so i'm not sure what the deal is. i even made a new user and the same thing happened on that account.

I'm having the same problem with my G5 Dual Desktop. I've trashed the preference files multiple times and even installed the OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update. All of these actions have helped for a couple of days. However, the problem always returns. I'm running no beta version of any software and use mostly "standard" third party software like Photoshop Elements 4.0, Microsoft Office 2004, etc. I use some shareware programs such as iPDA, Cocktail, CheckBook, Audacity, Chax, Eyeglasses, etc. (However, all of these programs had been running for months before the problem began.) I run Cocktail and DiskWarrior every two weeks. I'm an experienced Mac user and I've used every trick I know. Yet, I can't get to the bottom of this one! When the problem occurs, it causes the machine to slow down when I use Finder. Yet, applications seem to run just fine. I have to use a forced quit to get it running again. I normally leave the machine on 24/7. Now I turn if off each night. This seems to help reduce the frequency of the problem.

  • My macbook lag every second on every game, Including the DOCK!?!?!?!

Okay, as I've explained in the previous thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2667172&tstart=1
My lag is very baaaaad, I cant play a game after i start it and play a minute or two, then it comes. **** found the way to my computer. Satan. It lags a second, then its normal speed again, and then lags a second again, that happens until i play around with the grapich, Its best if i put on highest which makes it lags like *** And then reduce it again, or otherwise. And most of the time it doesnt even work to do that. And the DOCK lags too when i have many apps open. It slows down a second, then it speeds up again, then slows down. Its ******* annoying when im playing a game, like if i run on an edge, or towards one, and it slows down or speeds up, im ******* dead. Its so ******* annoying i dont know what the heck i should do.
    Thank you.

    1. Try to refrain from expletives as they get censored and all those * can leave us wondering what you are saying.
    2. For us here on the forums to help you, we need some information about:
    a. White macbook, 2.26 ghz, 2 gb ram, year, i am not sure, midle 2010 i guess, or early 2010, the edges of it is like, round.
    b. 250 gb, and like 100 gb free.
    c. 2 gb
    d. Any application gets lagged, Minecraft, Counter strike source, Air hockey, i really mean EVERY application. I'm WAY over the system reqs.
    e. The mobile broad band application. But there's nothing else. It lags without that app too. Its way much worse if i restart my computer too.

  • 13 in macbook pro (early to mid 2011) : after the update, computer freezes with spinning wheel every 30 seconds first with safari and now with all the applications. I don't have any programs installed and still had good enough memory on the RAM.

After the update of my 13 in mac book pro (early to mid 2011) , it freezes every 30 seconds with the spinning wheel and now it just freezes. Ive never had this problem until I recently updated. Also, I just checked now for available update ( which there was one), the update would process till the last step and it shows it cannot be expanded? Now my computer wont even restart (just have a grey screen with a cursor). Can someone please tell me what the heck is going on with my computer?
I also checked the memory and it showed available memory was over 1.5 GB. I dont have any programms installed and do not have backup yet ( dont really need it anyways)
Problems: first with spinning wheel every 30 seconds and now whole computer just freezes when I restart, it only shows grey screen after the starting sound or it takes about 8 to 10 minutes to restart.
This ALL happened right after the update with google chrome crashing. I know my apple care plan expired so I cant even go to genius bar. Do you guys know how much it would cost to get it fixed ? Or any recommendations I can do to fix this?

    Try a smc reset:

  • My Firefox freezes every so often and when it freezes, it stays frozen for a half hour or so. No matter how many times I quit and restart it, it still freezes as soon as it opens up and I can't click anything except the quit button. Why?

I am on FF and it suddenly freezes. The window says that it is not responding and it doesn't start to respond again. So I quit and open it up again. It loads all the basic images and then freezes again and stops responding. I try over and over again to quit and restart it, but it never responds and I have to swith over to using Internet Explorer when FF does not respond. Why does it do this?

    Thank you so much!
I didn't think the first page would help me because I could still add, delete and edit my bookmarks, then restart the browser and it would've saved the changes. Also, I didn't think the second page would help me because my browser didn't have any of the symptoms listed. The problem I had wasn't with adding, deleting, or editing the bookmarks. I simply couldn't organize my bookmarks in a certain folder because the bookmarks would jump around when I tried to move them. However, I looked down the second link's page and found a section titled "Problems limited to bookmarks". I did what the first sentence told me to and it allowed me to FINALLY organize that folder!
    Thanks again!

  • When I play Minecraft on my Macbook Pro the whole computer freezes

After a bit of Minecraft on my Macbook Pro (the amount of time before the freeze is always different.  I can go hours without it freezing up but sometimes it freezes after ten minutes), the screen will get distorted and my computer becomes completely unresponsive.  The only thing I can o is force it to shut off and turn it back on.
This happened before, and then my hard drive was found to be bad, so I got a new one... now it is happening again, and I would love it if I didn't have to replace the hard drive again...
One of my Engineering friends thinks it might be my graphics card or the computer itself, another said he'd never, ever seen something like the problem I am having.  I'd like to know if there's something I can do to fix this problem.
My computer has a 2.8GHz Intel i7 duo-core processor and NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512MB graphics card, if that is of any use to anyone who can help me.
On a side, slightly less annoying note, when I plug in my headphones, the volume stays constant no matter how many times I adjust the volume using the buttons on the keyboard or the icon on the top of the screen.  I have to go into the system preferences to change the volume.  Sometimes, when I unplug the headphones, the problem persists with the computer speakers.  Any ideas why this is happening or what I can do to fix it?

No one has any helpful tips?

  • I have a MacBook Pro 13" and am using Airport Time Capsule and iCloud. I delete my cookies all the time, but every so often the cookies reappear after rebooting. It is the exact same amount of cookies each time, so I wonder why they're being reloaded?

I have a MacBook Pro 13" (2010) running OS X 10.9.2   and have Airport Time Capsule. I routinely delete my cookies and often (every couple days or so) when I reboot, a number of cookies reappear in my Safari settings. The number of cookies that reappear is exactly the same when it does it (351 cookies) so I'm wondering if it is related to my Airport Time Capsule or possibly iCloud? How do the cookies get back into my MacBook Pro? Or.... Have they ever actually left? Befoer I reboot, I delete them and sometimes they stay gone for 24hrs or more, but then reappear the next time I reboot. Can someone tell me if there is a way to clear the cookies so they won't come back?

Blocking all cookies in Safari does not work. Deleted cookies will not stay deleted. There are numerous threads on this going back years, both in these forums and elsewhere. Many claim to have submitted the issue to Apple, but I have never seen anyone post a reply.
I have seen many suggested fixes that involve finding the cookies file, some including Terminal manipulations, and none seems to work universally. I can find noplace where Apple addresses this officially with an actual Apple-approved explanation or how-to.
Bottom line, your browser's security features should do what they claim: delete cookies. When they come back without ever even visiting another page, this is clearly not working in the way a reasonable user would expect.
Bottom line, Safari does not protect users' privacy in the way it pretends to and, after so many years of this issue, it appears that Apple wants it this way.
Having spent way too much time on this, I realize the choice is between Safari which is pretty well optimized; Firefox which is a lot pokier, at least for me; and Chrome, which I assume funnels personal information directly to Google.

  • Every so often the the screen enlarges by itself and the only way I found to correct it, is to turn the phone off and on again.

Just tried everything I can think of pinching to make it smaller and other gestures etc. none work. The phone is still usable but you have scroll around to find what you want on the desktop.

Try checking Settings > General > Accessibility > Zoom and turn it OFF.

  • My iPhone 5 has really sporadic battery percentage that jumps all over the place and every so often the phone turns off

    Hi guys!
I'm having trouble with my iphone 5, the battery percentage jumps all over the place. It will be down at 14% and then I plug the charger in and it jumps to 50%, it jumps around without me plugging the charger in. Today it actually turned off twice and had the red icon to plug it in and when I plugged it in it had turned straight on and was at 27%.
Any ideas what could be causing this? Its really annoying because when I'm out I'm not really able to rely on the battery indicator being correct.
Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
    Russell

    Hi Boris,
That sounds really similar! I'm not sure what to so about it, I bought a mobile battery pack to charge my phone while I'm on the go as this seems to make the percentage instantly jump back up again. If I don't get any ideas on here ill probably take it in to an apple store and see if I get any joy there. I'll let u know the outcome if I do go to a store, maybe I can at least buy one at a reduced rate or something. I got my iphone 5 on the day of release so I'm outside warranty too :(

  • Why does my iPhoto freeze the whole computer when editing?

Every time I edit in iPhoto, the whole computer freezes after about a dozen adjustments of any kind. I have to manually shut down and restart as no key commands allow access to any other app or the Finder.

    Hi, Terence ~
    I'm using iPhoto '11, v. 9.1.5
with ± 5,000 photos in current iPhoto Library
    running SnowLeopard, 10.6.8 --
capacity: 750 GB; available 695 GB
    on my Mac mini >>>
      Model Identifier:          Macmini1,1
      Processor Name:          Intel Core Duo
      Processor Speed:          1.66 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          2 MB
      Memory:          2 GB
      Bus Speed:          667 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MM11.0055.B08
      SMC Version (system):          1.3f4
The freezing has been happening for quite some time, since before I upgraded to Snow Leopard, before I upgraded to iPhoto '11 from iPhoto '09, before I upgraded my mac mini from a solo ore machine to a duo core with much more HD space, etc. I think it started when I first installed iPhoto '09 , but my memory fails me. I have had other events interspersed with this recurring annoyance, hoping that it would go away during one of the upgrades I mentioned. However, it persists. I have wondered about reinstalling iPhoto, but do not know if that means I will lose all my editing changes.
I do not know about any Console messages you refer to, but perhaps I am missing something. How would I find out? I do know that I am exhausted and frustrated by this. When the editing process causes the freezing, I cannot use any of the key escapes, cannot even shut down other than manually. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you for taking an interest in my dilemma.

  • Computer freezes while browsing the photos

It happened already few times that I was simply browsing the photos in Aperture and suddenly the computer (MBP Retina) has completely frozen and forced shut shut down had to follow. A bit strange ?  (while database repair was done few times before, even database rebuilt). Something still not so good in the software ?

I have Nikk plugins but they are not used on those photos. This freezing, as I remember, started after Mavericks. I simply browse among photos (in the large view) and suddenly the cursor and the whole computer freeze (once in few days)
Plug-ins can be causing this, without being used, just by being installed, if they are incompatible.
Check the versions of your NIK plug-ins, if you have missed an update. In November the NIK collection has still been reported as incompatible with Mavericks, I am not sure, if that has changed.
Does a new Aperture library work? Create a test library and import a few images. Freezing might also be caused by having imported corrupted images or videos.

  • Prevent the dock to move from one screen to another.

I have two external monitors connected to my mac and every some time the dock moves to the bottom of screen one (where all my destop icoms are located) to monitor two (no icons). How I can fix this. I want my dock in the same place all the time.

System Preferences, Mssion Control, uncheck "Displays have separate Spaces".

  • When I change size of icons or icon vs list display, why does it affect the whole computer?

When I change size of icons, or icon vs list display, why does it affect the whole computer? In some folders I want to see a list and others I want to see an icon and I don't need a large icon in all folders. I used to be able to set each folder separately in the old OS. How do I fix this?

I can hilight an item, go to the finder/file/getinfo but there is no box next to icon view.
I can go to view/options and adjust the icon size etc, but this applies to every folder in the whole computer. I need varied options in different folders, i.e., I want to view images as icons and text as text. I have to change it every time I open a folder. I used to be able to set it per folder in the old OS.

  • Photoshop CS6 computer freeze

I'm having a continual issue with Photoshop CS6 (13.0.6 x64) completely freezing my MacBook Pro when doing the following action:
    Edit > Transform > Scale
I am able to use this action instead without any issues:
    Edit > Free Transform
    About my Mac:
    OS X Yosemite 10.10
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013)
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB

If the whole computer freezes (can't force quit, have to reboot), then you are looking at an OS bug, a low level driver bug, or defective hardware.
Applications cannot cause a system hang, shutdown, or restart.
Given that MacOS 10.10 is a new OS version with a number of unsolved issues, it is most likely a driver or OS bug that you are hitting.
