Every Step, all Apps on iMac is Extremely Slow

The problem seems to be across the board, and not with any application.  I spend 10 to 30 sec watching the spinning ball on everything: opening a finder window, saving dox in Pages, opening any app, clicking on any pulldown menu in any app, each step saving a photo in PS (20+ sec on Save; same after enter name; again on location; again on file type - in short takes 2 minutes to save a pic in PS).
I’ve a circa 2008 iMac, which I have upgraded over time to 10.9.5. This problem seems to have coincided and become worse with each upgrade. As a result I have been hesitant to upgrade to Yosemite.
Thinking that problem could be capacity limits I checked what’s taking up most space. My Home shows 94 GB on disk. But I think capacity is 250GB. Went to About this Mac >System Report >Hardware >Storage >Macintoch HD and it showed 249.2 GB capacity and another 67.07 GB available.
I keep original photos on external HD. But still have 24GB of edited photos on iMac. Have 20GB of documents; iTunes library is 11.8GB; Desktop is 7,62GB; and Downloads is 1.35GB. Nothing else amount to a GB. I can put all of these on an external hard drive. Should I? Also delete Downloads, since have used or transferred anything there that want.
thanks for any assistance.
Armando

OK, have done it, and copied in result. Is this format OK to study it?

  • MacBook connects to Internet fast but iMac is extremely slow

When I bought my new MacBook Intel CoreDuo and connected wirelessly, the connection on my old iMac G5 Intel CoreDuo has become extremely slow. I can't even run software updates on it! My work Windows PC connects superfast to the same wireless router, and after trying many suggestions on the forum's posts, I am getting nowhere near resolving my issue. I can swear I am using the same settings on both Mac's although, as suggested in one of the posts, I have changed the location on my iMac. Please help!

    Hi Uzma,
As you mentioned, it works perfectly in Safe mode with Network. It might be caused by some third-party software or service. I would like to suggest you perform a Clean Boot to confirm it:
How to perform a clean boot in Windows
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Meanwhile, run Internet Explorer 11 in No Add-ons mode by running the Run command from the Start menu, and then typing
    iexplore.exe -extoff into the box.
    2.Check if the issue persists.
If yes , open Internet Explorer for the desktop, click the Tools menu, and click
    Manage Add-ons.
3.Click Toolbars and Extensions, click each toolbar or extension, clicking
Disable to turn off all of the browser extensions and toolbars.
4.Restart Internet Explorer 11. Go back to the Manage Add-Ons window and turn on each item, one-by-one.
After you turn each item back on, see if Internet Explorer crashes or slows down. Doing it this way will help you identify the add-on that's causing Internet Explorer to crash.
After you've figured out which add-on was causing the problem, turn it off until you have an update from the manufacturer.
In addition, loading image and script indeed take more time than blank webpage.

  • All apps crashing constantly and very slow performance

Ever since the last major upgrade on my iphone (3G), I have been having progressively worse issues of crashing of all apps, including Mail, Maps, Safari and iTunes, as well as third party apps, as well extremely slow performance. Yesterday I tried for 5 minutes to load Maps and it kept crashing or freezing up.
    <Edited by Host>

Thanks yes, I did restore and things did improve, but it's still slower than it was before and I've put far less on it than was before.

  • After iOS5 on 3 gs, lost all apps, music, phone became very slow

Installed last nigh iOS 5.0.1 on my 3 gs. Was always very happy with my phone, now only upsetting things - phone became unnormal slow, lost my music and all apps are gone (and I don't remember all names of them). The worst part - Pandora radio doesn't play music anymore when I'm using Safari like it used to and music plays through the headphones only, when I tried to play music through the speakers it says no volume available and I can't hear anything. What happened? Is it there way I can back my phone to a normal life? Its a very important gadget in my life (I don't know the city very well, so I'm using maps a lot) and I used Skype a lot so I can contact my family, now even Skype freeze and I can't use it normally. Also my computer can't 'see' a phone anymore and I can't download pictures and now worry that I can lost even them.
    I greatly appreciate your help!
    Have a great day!

    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
      - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
Also, go to Bose's support site, they may have suggestions for that problem

  • My imac is extremely slow/ apps crashing.

So all of the sudden my iMac is pretty much useless, I just sit and stare at my rainbow pinwheel hoping something will happen. Almost every app I actually get open usually crashes not long after. What do I do?!?!

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • IMac running extremely slow all of a sudden

I have a 1st generation Intel iMac (24", late 2006), which ran fine for three years but all of a sudden slowed to a crawl about a month ago. I upgraded to 3GB of RAM, but didn't see any improvement; I've run the disk utility app on the system install disk and didn't get any problems; I don't see anything in the Activity Monitor that's hogging CPU usage (although iTunes uses about 7% while playing music and 20% while playing video - considerably higher when it loads a new track into RAM); and I have 70GB free on a 300GB hard disk. I realize that this is just scratching the surface, so what else should I be looking at? For what it's worth, yes I have an HP printer, but the drivers don't seem to take up that much CPU time; and I'm still on 10.4.11, so maybe it's just time to upgrade to Snow Leopard; but either way I've been on this system (and with this printer) for a long time, and I don't understand why this would happen all of a sudden...
    Thanks!

    HI,
70GB free disk space could be at least part of the problem for the disk slowing down.
Try Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk
Check the startup disk for errors that may need repairing.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you cannot boot from your install disc, try booting in Safe Mode
    How to Force Background Maintenance
One way to free up disk space...
Open Console. Select system.log then from the Menu Bar click Reveal in Finder then move that log file to the Trash. These logs can take up as much as a GB.

  • "Apps" taking up 5.2Gb when ALL apps on iMac = 1.75Gb

My wife's iPhone is displaying 5.2Gb for Apps (the green section of the Summary bar). If she installed every app she has on her account, they would only total 1.75Gb. as it is, she only has half of those installed. Does anyone have an idea what all that extra space is going to? I can't figure it out at all and would prefer not to reinstall her iPhone from scratch if I can avoid it.
    Thanks in advance.

The total on the phone counts the personal data that is stored as well as the size of the app itself, whereas the Apps tab I believe only displays the size of the app, alone.
If, for instance, she has the Dropbox app, it counts all of the locally-stored files (PDFs, movies, mp3s, Word documents, etc.) that Dropbox has downloaded to the phone as well as the Dropbox app itself - this is included in the "green bar" at the bottom.
The "Apps" tab displays the size of each app WITHOUT (I believe) accounting for the "backup" data that is specific to her phone.

  • IMac, sudden extremely slow webpage loading problem

    Hi guys,
I had this problem all of a sudden, not sure whether it was caused by malware, my own python scripts or the 10.8.2 update. However all the other devices in my wifi network work just fine. And also my iMac is not disconnected from the internet, ping "www.google.com" is fine, and other IM apps are working properly too.
I tried different browswers (chrome, firefox, safari) since then, and all the other suggested solutions (resetting DNS, using static ip address, clear cache and etc.) None of them actually solved the problem.
My friend told me to reinstall a clean OS X, which could be a huge pain for me.
However, I accidently found out some softlinks and permissions are messed up in my superuser directories. So I did a "repair disk permission" , now the browsers are back on the horse. That actually makes sense to me.
Long story short, verify/repair disk permissions (in Utilities/disk utility) might solve your browser page loading problem! I just wanna to share with you guys if you are struggling on the same issue as I was.
    Regards,
    candyquicksort

Thanks for the report & sharing!

Today soothing has happened to my iMac it is showing spinning beach ball on everything.

It is coming back as 'error: disk utility is unable to repair this disk.  Back up as many files as possible , and reformat disk.'

  • ITunes App and Other Downloads Extremely Slow

I have the latest version of iTunes; however this problem began presenting itself even before my upgrade: apps, songs, podcasts, etc. (basically anything downloaded through iTunes) start dowloading very fast (my connection is a 60 megabit one) and then hang in the middle of downloading. They sit there... trickle downloading at an incredibly slow rate until ultimately, they finish. Stuff that used to take seconds, now takes minutes.
I have my iTunes collection on an external USB drive, which I have verified as working fine in the Disk Utility, and there is still 80GB of free space available. This problem presents itself even when no other applications save iTunes are running. Nothing has changed on my side, so I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing this difficulty.
A side note, this issue doesn't appear when I am downloading anything through the Apple App Store (such as the 300MB or so Mountain Lion update I downloaded in under a minute today).

You have more or less answered your own question, you have too little space on your hard drive. Either put in a bigger one, or offload some of your music and photos/videos onto an external drive. You can use [whatsize|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/44018] to see which programs are taking up the most space. You can also go to Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor to see if anything is hogging your CPU. Remember to empty your browser caches and the trash as well.
Let us know if you manage to speed things up,

Why is my apple tv not streaming

You have a network issue between the ATV and iCloud and Netflix.  Since no detail were provided it is not possible to be more specific than that.  The connection you pay for from you ISP does not mean anything.  You maybe paying for a 12 - 14Mbps connection but that is meaningless when it comes to what the actualy connection is between ATV and say netflix.
