Every time I create a new folder on my iMac desktop, the folder immediately copies every other folder and file on my desktop, so that I now have multiple, unwanted copies of every folder taking up memory.  What caused this and how do I fix it?  Thanks.

I also can not move any items on my desktop to another spot on the screen.

Holy cow!???
Here's an older cure I'd try...
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Every so often when using safari my bookmarks disappear and then later the list shows up again.  Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix it?

Every once in awhile while using safari my bookmarks list disappears.  Later it just shows up again.  Anyone know what causes this and how to fix it?

I have had exactly the same problem now with two mini iPads.  Everything was tried; 1) restarting; 2) restoring factory settings etc.  NONE worked.  Eventually Apple agreed to replace it.  I have had the replacement now for two to three months and exactly the same thing is happening again. So off to Apple tomorrow to get another replacement.
I am quite a heavy user of the iPad so wonder if this is something to do with the fault.
It is so frustrating as sometimes reset works, and then after 10/20/30/40 minutes (you pick) it goes unstable again.

Although you say you have let the battery drain, was it for long enough? Since nothing else that you've tried so far has worked, I suggest that you leave the iPod unplugged for at least four days, preferably a week. That way, if something is stopping the iPod from turning the screen on, then whatever it is will drain the battrey. However, since the screen isn't on, that may take longer than if the screen was on.
Then, after that time, plug the iPod into a power source and leave it alone for at least thirty minutes. Only after thirty minutes will it show any signs of life, but you should leave it until it is fully charged before trying to use it.
If you get to this stage, the fact that the battery has drained will cause the iPod to reset when it springs back to life.
Let us know how you get on.

It's strange. The problem apparently resolved itself after I ran TechTool on it. When I clicked on Firefox last night, I had no problem opening a window. Thanks for your help. (As to your previous post, the focus was on Firefox and neither the speed keys nor the menu bar would open a window or tab of allow me to enter a URL to open a window. Strange!)

  • 64 bit Photoshop CS 5.1 Extended crashes every time I create a new file or open an existing file

I installed the 64 bit version of Photoshop CS 5.1 Extended successfully.  It opens fully without issue.  However, any time I create a new file or open an existing file, it crashes.
I figured this would have something to do with my graphics card, but it still does the same thing after updating the drivers & nVidia software.  Seems like my whole trial will end up expiring before I ever even get to use it!! Please help!!
    System details:

AMD Athlon II X2 215 Processor 2.7 GHz

  • When I click on the "import all" button when downloading my photos I get a message that states that the format is unrecognizable.  What caused this and how do I change it so I can import my photos?

I am trying to download photos from my digital camera.  I have done this many times before with this same camera; however this time when I click the "import all" button I get a message that states that the format is unrecognizable.  It doesn't specify what the format is.
What is causing this and how do I correct it?  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!
    Aimee

Make a temporary, backup copy of the library and try the following:
launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
select the options identified in the screenshot.
Launch iPhoto and try importing again.

  • Mac randomly crashes, screen turns green and white, and it works fine upon restart. What causes this and how can I fix it?

My MacBook Pro 13 inch (I've had it for about a year and a half) has started crashing randomly. It happens about once a week and it will happen when I'm in the middle of either watching a video, typing a paper, playing a game, etc. The computer clicks loudly and the screen becomes a series of green and white lines. It works fine upon restart, but it's still annoying whenever it happens. What causes this? Is it fixable?

The image suggests an issue with the graphics board.
The issue may happen more when your machine is generating additional heat, as when you're watching or processing video, or gaming. I can't say for certain, of course, but certain things will reduce the chance of the problem recurring:
    1. Keep your machine as cool as possible. When there's additional heat, turn up the fan, or use an app like HD Fan Control to reduce the heat. Use your computer the way you see fit, but be conscious of heat.
    2. Back up on a regular basis. Logic board problems can lead to more serious issues down the line, so backing up is a good way of safeguarding your data.
    3. Look up "Logic Board Woes" on Google for a comprehensive discussion of the issue.

  • My MacBook Pro display won't work without a second display plugged in. What caused this, and how do I fix it?

I'm using a Dynex Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adaptor to use a second display (an older display, I'll admit). After I have unplugged the adaptor, my MacBook still tries to read the second display, and switches back-and-forth between a blue screen & my desktop. It stabilizes once I plug the adaptor back in. What is causing this problem, and how do I fix it so I can use my primary display without having the adaptor constantly plugged in?

    Reset PRAM.

  • Missing songs: half of the songs in my library have suddenly become unplayable because iTunes "cannot locate original file" whats caused this and how do i fix it?

Its really irritating having all my songs there one day and having half of them go missing the next and i haven't done anything to cause the files to be lost, on top of that it's completely randomised in what songs have gone missing as it is not whole albums, individual songs from different albums are going missing and it's telling me to find the files, which i have no idea where to look or what to do, it has rendered iTunes completely useless for me. Does anyone else have this problem? How did you fix it?

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • When I click on Print to print a pdf from my computer, the message "initialization of rasteurization module failed". What does this mean - how do I fix it?

Why can't I print a pdf in Acrobat Pro? I keep getting the message "initialization of rasteurization module failed". What does that mean and how do I fix that?

This is an Acrobat error ("Initialization of the rasterizer module failed.") but it is has never been reported before that I can see.
    Let's start with the basics.
    - What version of Acrobat Pro
    - What system
    - What printer
    - Does it happen with other printers?
    - Does it happen with all files?

  • -39 error, what does this mean, how do I fix it?

I try and download a game from the iTunes store and I get this error message "There was a problem download ######. An unknown error occured -39."  How do I fix this, I am using the Windows Vista platform.

This is a not uncommon problem when uninstalling iTunes and other Apple programs. It also occurs when updating because Apple uninstalls the previous version before applying an update.
There is a Microsoft "Fix it" solution for programs that won't uninstall correctly found at http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall. It can bypass the network resource unavailable error. It is well written but may take several minutes (I have seen 20-30) to uninstall the app. When the utility finishes successfully the app is uninstalled and, if desired, you can try the software update again.
This solution is a replacement for the older Windows Installer CleanUp utility (msicuu2.exe). Microsoft retired the CleanUp utility because it can cause problems with other programs installed by the Microsoft Windows Installer. If you see suggestions that direct you to download the older utility, please try this Fix it solution before doing so. Downloading programs from unknown sources can be risky.
