Every Time I Print - Makes me do it Twice

Hi All,
I'm having some printer frustration with my I-Mac. Before I pay Geek Squad, upwards for $200 to "try" and fix it, I thought I would drop a post here and hope for the Hail Mary touchdown.
My Computer:
IMAC 24"/3.06/SD (and running Snow Leopard).
My Printers: (both connected directly to I-mac)
(1) HP Photosmart
(2) HP 1012
The Error Message when I try to print the first time.
"Error: Communication Failure: The computer is no longer able to communicate with your printer. Turn the printer off, check your printer connections and check for printer errors, and, t..."
When I print immediately again - all works well. Thus, I essentially have to print twice anytime I need to perform this action. It's like there is an initial goofy disconnect at some point. Very frustrating as you can imagine.
Thanks in advance for your wisdom and assistance,
Ben

I have an HP printer. I've seen this happen even under Leopard. You have upgraded to Snow Leopard and much of the software that HP loaded on your system when you were likely running Leopard is no longer needed, but if the HP programs are in your account's Login Items, I think they may be causing some conflict. I would consider removing any HP stuff from your Login iTems and removing all the HP programs (via Uninstall) that you no longer need. Go with either the HP drivers that are included in Snow Leopard 10.6.2 or go on HP's website and only download Snow Leopard versions of everything you want. Post back if I'm anything is not clear.
HP and Canon's printer drivers are pretty much all included in a large HP/Canon printer driver update that everyone with 10.6/10.6.1 had to download later - hope I have my releases correctly identified. I think even the first 10.6.2 updates may not include it, but now it may be included so you didn't see anything more to download. It's my understanding talking to Canon (also picked up a Canon printer a week ago), that HP and Canon supplied the drivers etc. to Apple for bundling in that large update.

How can I save to the same map every time when printing pdfs?
Finder points to the document map even when I chose a different map recently.

Thanks all for the information.  We are taking a look at what this might be.    Is it printing this out on a single sheet after the desired print, or on the same page or a combination?  Any additional details will greatly help trying to track this issue down to root cause.

  • "The Pure Networks Platform Service Is Not Running" every time I print

I will be glad to follow-up with all the gory details about my system, but I thought I'd throw out a general question first.  I just installed a network printer to my NM Network.  It's a Lexmark 543dn connected via ethernet.  Everything prints just fine, the Map shows it as a Network Printer,etc..
The only problem is that every time I print, the Platform Service stops running and I get a general Windows Error message asking whether I want to "report" the error.  You know the one...you have to click SEND or DO NOT SEND.   The Platform can be easily restarted without problems.  Is this a common problem..with hopefully a common solution?
FWIW, it becomes a pain when the kids have to come fetch me when the error message comes up; they think they did something wrong.   Plus, if I'm not mistaken they need to restart the platform service if they want to continue printing to the sole color laser in the house.

Hi, we do need the info in the sticky topic so we can see what your hardware and software is.  Not all crashes happen on all systems.

Desktop, iMac: NM is on the Windows Partition, using Boot camp to access Windows, Windows 7 Pro 32-bit RTM, Broadcom Wireless N Card, McAfee Personal Firewall 2009,
Mac Partition of the iMac is using Mac OS X 10.6.1 Snow Leopard

  • Printing with Gray background on entire page every time I print through Elements 12

Every time I print a photo in photoshop, a gray background appears on the entire page of the printed paper (except for 1/4th of an inch margin on all sides.)  This does not happen when printing from iPhoto so I assume it is a preference in photoshop or in my driver/printer settings?  I am set up for sublimation printing and with an ICC profile from Conde Systems.  I work in RGB mode and use the specific color profile downloaded by Conde.
I have a feeling that when I set up my settings, I somewhere marked the "hard settings" or "default" background color to print in WHITE…which is somehow translating to gray when I print (this is just a guess.) I am thinking that a setting of mine  is off yet I have no idea where to change it.    If I open a new doc, specify that I want the background transparent, it will print without the gray box!  However, if I open an image and simply hit "print" - the entire page is gray - which is wasting tons of ink.  Creating the new doc and placing the image on that doc and then printing it is a fine temporary solution to the problem but it is not conducive to my business.  Anyone with any knowledge on this  situation would be a lifesaver.   Happy to provide any additional details needed!!!
Please offer any insight you have - this has been driving me crazy for weeks!!
    Thanks in advance.

  • Save every time I print

Why does Pages insist on asking me to save every time I print and try to close an unchanged document? While it may be trying to write some sort of print info to the file, I feel like this is a bug. It should detect whether I've changed any print settings and, if I have not, simply allow me to close without saving.
It drives me so batty I have almost have decided to go back to Word and just try to simplify Word's menus, etc. Well, maybe it's not just that issue -- it's that plus the large file size of Pages' documents, its inability to do both landscape and portrait pages in the same document, etc.
Pages has a lot of things that are good, but then has some really frustrating things, too.

    Magnus,
I believe you. But we're talking about closing a document or quitting Pages altogether. Neither of those two events seems to occur at a point in our thought processes where concentration is critical.
I'm a writer, and I consider my train of thought to be sacrosanct. There are all kinds of interruptions, both natural and man-made, to be dealt with during the course of my day. But I have to say that the idea of hitting a carriage return doesn't rank in the top 100. I believe the original poster when he says that it drives him batty. But considering when the event occurs, I still have to ask why?

No, there is not setting for a default printer. The system scans for available airprint printers each time you print.

I noticed your post about your printer printing out receipts. I am not quite sure what the printer could be printing. Could you possibly scan one of the receipts and send me the image to see what could be causing them to print?

  • Every time I print the file reduces to the size of a postage stamp on paper

I am running Adobe Acrobat Professional 9 on my computer, and every time I try to print a PDF, the contents of the file print in approximately a 1" by 1" square that looks like a postage stamp on the corner of the paper.  I haven't changed any print settings from their defaults since installing the software.
It doesn't matter if I make the file myself or if it is a previously made PDF.  Additionally, all of the files print correctly from other computers.  How can I correct this problem?

  • Photosmart D110 losing network connection - I have to reboot my router every time I print

Every time I have to print the printer cannot be found by any device (desktop (mac and windows), laptop, iphone, or ipad).
The printer says it is connected to the wireless network, but no device can see it and the desktops show it as offline.
The only way to remedy the situation is to reboot the wireless router.  I am not sure if this just happens over time or every time the D110 goes to sleep.  Either way it renders the wireless feature of this device useless and frankly why have it if I have to reboot the entire network any time anyone in the house wants to print something.  This is quite frustrating.

Try update the firmware of router.

  • Time Capsule needs to be reset every time I print wirelessly or watch Apple TV

    Hello all!
My Time Capsule keeps dropping my wireless printer and Apple TV. Every time I want to stream a movie to my Apple TV it needs to be reset, and everytime I want to print wirelessly it needs to be reset. However, my internet connection remains constant and never has any interuptions.
Please help, it's getting really annoying to run upstairs to reset the time capsule every time I wanna watch a movie.

It is reported here all the time that the TC needs daily reboots.. you are highly fortunate that it is only weekly..
The fact is the old TC using 7.5 firmware was probably hugely more reliable than the current one which is not able to be flashed back beyond 7.6. There is a bug.. and as yet no Apple confession of issues.
But most people can get away without a reboot.. you just need to disconnect all users.. which was an option in the v5 utility.. now left out of v6.
Strongly recommend you install v5 utility.
(Or get electrical timer to restart the TC on a nightly basis).
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
For screen shots see this post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4668746?tstart=0
Most common message in history of the TC.. something has failed to unmount.. Lion and esp. Mountain Lion are affected.
Simple way.. reboot the TC to lose the connections..
    Might take a network reboot.
But from 5.6 utility you can disconnnect all users.
