Every time I try to open iPhoto, it quits unexpectedly

I use a MacBook Pro OS X 10.8.5
I can't tell you what version of iPhoto I use, as it quits to quickly for me to double-check
Please can someone help?!

Hi Terence
Thank you very much for your reply.
Unfortunately, when I follow your first instruction, "Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto", the same old problem occurs.   Namely, iPhoto launches momentarily, then 'quits unexpectedly'.
If I then select 'reopen' in the error message box, the same thing happens again.
So, there is no chance to then go on and follow your next instructions.
Any suggestions?   Your help is much appreciated.
