Everything on my desktop disappeared. i tried using the finder to locate specific files and they are missing. Help!

i'm using a macbook pro retina, 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB. operating OSX Yosemite 10.10.1
everything on my desktop disappeared. i've managed to make my HD reappear on my desktop but my files etc are nowhere to be found. i tried using the finder to locate specific files and they are missing. Help! I foolishly filled up my desktop with piles of screen grabs and folders - no doubt that was the cause... what do i do, aside from punish myself for being so stupid?

Could you have logged into another account?
If you go to System Preferences>Users and Accounts what accounts are listed?
To show users at login go to the Login Options of chanck the box that says show list of users.
If they they are gone and you can't find them then restore them from a backup

If you are using the same Apple ID on both devices, the Game Center profile should be the same.
Check out this information from the iPad User Guide. Try signing out of the Game Center on both devices and then sign back in with the correct Apple ID:

I have spent the last two or three days trying to do what you suggested. I uninstalled Adobe 6 from Windows. Some files that CS6 placed on my system during installation remained, including fonts and .dll files.
I had to abandon the Cleaner Tool you suggested because in one screen it allowed me to specify removing CS6 only, but on the following screen it only gave on option to remove ALL Adobe programs. I could not do that because I didn't have the serial number handy for CS3 in case I want to reinstall it at some point.
I tried to get technical help with the Cleaner Tool problem but no definitive help was available, so I reinstalled CS6 again without having the benefit of the Cleaner Tool. I tried to get the serial number for CS3 so I could use the Cleaner Tool but spent 2 wasted hours in chat. Even though I had a customer number, order number, order date, place of purchase, the email address used AND 16 digits of the serial number, in two hours the agent couldn't give me the serial number. After two hours I had nothing but instructions to wait another 20 minutes for a case number.
Illustrator CS6 is still trying to open some backups as Text and otherNone of the problems have been fixed. I have tried to open/use the .ai files in CS6 installed on another system and am getting the same result, so I don't think the software was damaged by the cleaner. The hard drive cleaner is well-known and I've run it many times without any problem to previous versions of Illustrator or any other programs.
When I ordered, the sale rep promised good technical support and gave me an 800 number, but after I paid the $2000, I learned that the 800 number she gave me doesn't support CS6 and hangs up on me. Adobe doesn't call it a current product even though they just sold it to me about 3 weeks ago.
Would appreciate any help you experts can offer. If I can't solve this, the last backup I can use was from June and I will have lost HUNDREDS of hours of work and assets that I cannot replace.

Are you saying that the tick-box shown in my screenshot, isn't there? (Yes, this is iTunes 11 - I've turned on the sidebar and the Menu bar. So you can see, this is a CD in my drive that we're looking at.)
If it isn't, go to Edit/Preferences/General and turn on the tick-box box
You can show the Menu Bar (with Edit on it) by using CTRL + B

Why do the characters in the field of a form disappear when I attach the form to another PDF file and then save the resulting pdf?

This just started happening and it does not happen every time I do this action. I occasionally get the following message "An incorrect structure was found in the PDF file" and that seems to be part of the issue. Has anyone experienced anything like this?

I found out that if I waited about 15 minutes the PDF file became normal. Thank heavens! I've now sent out my newsletter for my Quilt Club to our 90 e-mail subscribers and all of them I have heard from have gotten it the way I had written it. It must just have been a quirk that happened, but I sure am glad it fixed itself. I only have 5 more newsletters to write and then I am done. Thank Heaven. Thank you for trying to help. I was about to become even more crazed than I get when I have to publish the newsletter. I do it once a month and I never would have volunteered for the 2 year job if I had know how much work it is. My husband walks gently when he knows I am trying to put the newsletter together. I'm not usually crabby, but this has made me a nut case once a month. It's a good thing we've been married for 37 years, so he knows that it is only the "newsletter editor nutty lady" that is getting mad at everything and everyone, including him! TS3274 My daughters ipad has stopped downloading new apps, we tried to download some new ones this week and they are just showing as "waiting", we deleted all her games to see if it was a memory issue but they are still showing as waiting.

If there are multiple apps trying to download at once, only one can download at a time and the rest say "Waiting" until it is then their turn. Try this. Double tap the icon of the Waiting app, and it should resume the download.

Another thing to try - Turn the iPad Off & then back ON.
If that doesn't work:
• Log out of your iTunes store account. Go to Settings > Store > Sign Out Then press the Home button.
• Then press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously and don't release them when it brings up the Turn Off screen; keep holding them until the Apple logo appears.
• After restart, the Waiting should be gone.

Using Finder to locate specific file types....

Hi. I'm looking for bookmarks that may contain a particular word. Is there a way to filter my spotlight (or finder) searches just for a particular file type? I know you can sort results by file type, but it's rather just filter in the first place...

What kind of bookmarks are you referring to? For example, most web browsers these days have a search field in their bookmark manager so searching within the app might be easier than using Spotlight.
Also, new to Leopard, the Application "Help" menus use "Spotlight" now. So for example, entering a term in "Safari" > "Help" will bring up hits including matches in the "Bookmarks" and "History" menus. Something perhaps something similar will work for a programme that doesn't have it's own searchable bookmarks.
With respect to SpotLight, a search using "Kind" is "Other" and entering "bookmark" brings up some types of bookmarks (but clearly not all - I'm not sure what it's doing exactly). It's kind of cumbersome, but you could also add something like this to your query: 'kMDItemContentType:com.apple.safari.bookmark'...

I am using exchange on Iphone for my gmail account. This way my gmail, contacts and calendar all sync.
When I open mac mail my iphone inbox, sent and deleted all clear out and into my mac in mail inbox.
I need these emails on my iphone for reference purposes but lose them because they flow into my mac.
How can I have my inbox on my iphone mirror my mac?

I have two Iphones connected to the same apple id . I am unable to use the find my iphone app on both devices. It only works on one!! Please help! It is driving me crazy lol!!

The app should locate both phones if they are using the same iCloud account and the app is signed into the account. If they are using different account, sign out, then sign back in with the other account to track the other phone.
If one of them isn't showing and you're signed into the correct iCloud account, go to Settings>iCloud on the phone in question and turn Find My iPhone Off, then back On.

My apologies. Your post jogged my little grey cells to the point that I did a few experiments. In essence, you are right. My plug-ins do not work with 8-bit greyscale images. I like to deliberately shoot B&W and have a Wratten #12 minus-blue filter on the lens--as I used to do with film cameras.
The raw files ( Fujifilm's .RAF) were converted in Adobe CR by checking off "Convert to Grayscale" under the fourth tab. In the future, I will do the B&W conversion in Photoshop with either Nik or Topaz plug-ins.

How is Acrobat 8 not fully Windows 7 compatible? I see discussions on this Adobe Community saying how Acrobat 8 does work on Windows 7 and with 64-bit. It appears that if Acrobat 8 is updated to the latest version, then this should fix AA8-Win7 issues. And I am at the latest AA8 version, 8.3.1.
And how are Acrobat 8 and Reader XI are not compatible? I have always had Acrobat and Reader installed on the same PC, without ever having any issues. And Adobe allows the installation of one after the other. So apparently Adobe allows them both to exist together. If they are incompatible, then why would Adobe allow them to exist together?
Anyway, I did uninstall the FileOpen Plug-in and the Reader XI, then reinstalled the FileOpen Plug-in. So now Reader is not installed and only Acrobat 8 is installed. I then tried to load the PDF file, but I still get the Acrobat 8 error described above.
