Everything slow

Well I start my search for a solution here. About two weeks ago my MacBook Pro slowed down. Everything slowed down. Slow internet (I have 10mg service), slow to open windows, slow to access parts of drop down menus, slow to go back, slow to open programs, slow to 'forward' instructions such as print, search, open. Slow to close programs, close down, restart. Everything just slowed down. I have lots of available memory, nothing else running at the same time. I don't know where to look to resolve the problem. I've learned to expect the beach ball but sometimes it doesn't even show up. Any thoughts? Thank you.

I would suggest that you check and repair permissions and, perhaps, even verify the hard drive and repair if needed. Often file permissions become corrupted. Boot from your install disc by holding down the "C" key during startup. After picking your language, go to the Utilities->disk utilities. Verify the disk and then repair permissions. Given that a try before you do anything drastic.

  • Since upgrading my mid/late 2007 MacBookPro to Mountain Lion 10.8.1 everything slowed down

Yesterday I upgraded to Mountain Lion OS 10.8.1 everything slowed down. Adobe Illustrator takes forever to perform any operation, Same goes for Chrome. I have quit all the aplication except for Illustrator and it's still extremely slow.
I have upgraded ONLY because I read that upgrading to 10.8 will fix a problem with saving to PDF from Illustrator. It did not solve that problem.
Intead now I cannot use Ms Word, Excell, Powerooint  I was able to use with 10.6. !!!
I want to revert back to OS 10.6.!!!
    How can I do that???

  • After ripping about 75 cds everything slowed down. Help- is it cache issue?

Please help me out. I am new to this. I ripped about 100 cds into itunes and everything slowed where I couldnt rip and listen at the same time, or use other programs for that matter. Definitely a RAM issue or so it seems. I cleared my temp internet files to see if it would help, but no. I had also downloaded some updates by coincidence around the same time so i restored my puter back to yesterday thinking that was those updates. Everything went back to normal and started ripping quickly 10x, 11x while playing tunes and me surfing. Now it slowed again about 75 cds later. No reason why. i didnt do anything but rip the tunes.
Is there some play to clear the RAM or cache or something? What is stealing away my resources. Rebooting does not help.
    I hope you can!!!
    Thanks a lot !!

NOT true. Going back does not reverse all the work you have done. It simply restores settings and files to where they were. All the cds I burned remained as did every other file i created or edited.
But going back is not recommended and certainly shouldnt be done regularily.

  • Internet running slowly, videos not playing well, everything slowing down. Wifi signal is strong, not sure what the problem is. Help please.

I have had my mac since December of this year. Suddenly it will not play video with stopping every few seconds to load, and my internet is running slower even though the connection is fine and everythiny else in the house on wifi is working well. Whats the issue?

Run this web based browser scan, it will tell you in red and provide a link to the download page.

Also another great free program is OnyX, just run everything, cleans your machine out on a system level.
You can cancel the reboot to run another cleaning section, just make sure you reboot at the end before using the computer.

Also use the Firefox web browser, it's insanely faster, the fasest of all browsers. The choice of Add-ons is numerous, personalization is just awesome. Everything can be changed, moved around etc. Persona's, themes etc. Just insane.
Not only that, Firefox is for Windows, OS X and Linux, the same browser on all.

Do a bandwidth test after you fixed Flash.

  • Yosemite everything slow, freezing up, Help before I toss this machine in the trash!

Ever since I upgraded to Yosemite my machine has gotten slower and slower.  At this point functioning on this machine is a train wreck.  Open an application - go get coffee, fold laundry, check...still application bouncing.
When it finally opens every action brings the spinning beachball.
Multiple pages while browsing the internet? Can't do it.
    Multiple applications open?  Nope
Everything loads impossibly slow and often crashes - I spend more time Force Quitting and trying again than I do actually getting done what I set out to do.
So far this is what I have done:
    Multiple disk utility repairs
    SMC reset
Wiped the computer completely clean and reinstalled.
    Problem description:
Yosemite issue.  Everything has slowed to a snails pace.  I can’t have multiple applications open.  The computer locks up, freezes, applications don’t open or freeze and I have to force quit.  Even though FileVault is OFF I can’t configure automatic log in, It’s a mess.

Why don't you just give it a try to uninstall it, use Firefox and see it it does not improve. If it is not it, you can always install anew your preferred browser. It is cheaper, and quicker than having a HD replaced. Plus you can do it yourself immediately.
If it is not that, I will also support the HD theory, with one variation. Check if there was not a Firmware update for your WD HD. If I recall correctly, there was a problem and some firmware and software had to be updated. Worth a try?
    Have fun

  • Upgrade is making everything slow?

Please help. I upgraded my iPhone 3G last night, and now my phone is taking forever to do everything. It gets stuck in between screens, takes minutes to open the iBooks app, I've never had this experience with my iPhone 3G. Any suggestions? Help.....The Genius Bar is booked for days because of the new iPhone release and the phone people weren't very helpful..

Not only is my phone much slower, but if I'm in an app and someone calls, it won't allow me to answer the call and doesn't even show the caller ID. Then the missed call doesn't show in the Missed Call list. A little while ago the phone started ringing constantly and wouldn't stop. No call was showing on the screen, but the thing continued to ring. I finally had to turn the phone off completely. When I turned it back on, it didn't show a missed call.

  • Everything slow with last update

I just recently updated and everything is slow... is this happening for anybody else or am I just lucky? Videos I used to be able to play won't play anymore, firefox is painful to use, moving windows actually taxes my system now. top doesn't show any odd behavior...
Sigh - I'm going to be downgrading soon to see if that helps.

Okay, sorry guys. It was just a bad coincidence. My laptop is on a slow path to death and apparently falling apart (my L2 cache is a little wonky and my fan appears to be dead).  So there's that. Thanks!

  • Macbook Pro wifi and application issues, everything slow

    Hey guys,
So my macbook pro has been giving me a lot of issues lately. It doesn't appear to be one particular problem and it's spread out across applications. Here's my situation:
The wifi connection in my dorm room wont work all of a sudden. It's the schools wifi, so I can't mess with. But my roommate, who also has a macbook pro, is having no problems at all. So I think it's just my computer. It SAYS I'm connected to the internet and has full connection, but it doesn't go through.
Here's the weird thing... I CAN connect to any other wifi on campus just fine. And all ethernet ports work fine.
I'm also having trouble with a variety of applications. My Twitter app, mail wont load anything, Itunes store is slow or doesn't work, the App store wont open, Celtx.....
I think it's all programs that require some sort of internet connection to function. And it's really strange how all these applications still don't work right even when I DO have internet connection (through ethernet or other wifi).
Few notes: I've tried reseting the permissions, and I have 40GB free on my harddrive. It's been happening for a week now, and I've tried rebooting many times. I did a large software update right before it started happening, but I'm not sure if they are related.
What do you think? Is this something I can fix on my own? Or is something damaged on my computer?
    HELP!

Alright, Gryphonator, looks like you're being hijacked. Try the following:
    1) Go to this webpage and download the latest stable version of Opera (in case you don't know, it's a Web browser, and if you don't like it, you can ditch it whenever you want); save it to your Desktop
    2) Reboot your Mac in Safe Mode by keeping the Shift key down on startup until you get the Apple grey backdrop AND a progress bar. Once this shows onscreen, you can lift your finger from the Shift key
    3) Once in Safe Mode, you are not connected to the Internet (unplug your Ethernet cable before you do anything), and only the basic OS X kernel extensions are running, so try and install Opera on your regular user account
    4) Plug your Ethernet cable and try to connect to the Internet (you should be able to)
    5) Unplug the Ethernet cable, and reboot normally
    6) Once your Mac is up and running, try browsing the Web with Opera
    7) Let us know of your progress (or lack thereof...)
The point of installing/using Opera is that it doesn't yet exist on your system, so it can't have corrupt plist preferences files and the like. Installing it in Safe Mode will prevent whatever is playing with your Internet connection from wreaking havoc with install.
Finally, for all its flaws, Opera is probably the safest Web browser there is. I've never been hijacked once in all the years I've used it, even when using Windows as my primary OS (see, you CAN turn to the Dark Side of the Force and come back!)
    Keep us posted!

  • Problem after importing - now EVERYTHING slow!

I recently made my first iMovie and burned to DVD with no problems. It was great! I am now trying to import video for a new project but it is not so smooth.
It seems to import OK, but when the letterboxing gets almost through it seems to stall. I end up having to quit and trash the project to start again but then my computer runs extremely slow for a very long time then seems to eventually come back to normal.
    Here are some issues:
-I still have the old project on my hard drive, so I know it is taking a lot of space. But it was not slowing anything before starting a new project.
-the clip on which the letterboxing seems to stall is a long one. Could this be a problem?
-I've tried a few times to bring this movie in, each time trying smaller chunks so that it does not take too much space but it does not change anything.
-Why, even after trashing the new project, is my computer so slow? It takes several minutes perform any task and sometimes just goes to a blue screen.
I am using iMovie HD 5 and I have the version of the iMAC prior to the built-in iSight and INTEL processors.
Sorry this is long-winded and thanks for any help/advice!!!

    Welcome to the forum.
What is a pre-defined help file? Do you simply mean someone
else created the project? You also say you you imported the files
but it's not clear why. Maybe that does not matter, I mention it in
case the next bit is not the problem as then I will need to know
    more.
It should be as simple as double clicking the drop-down
hotspot. Does nothing happen if you do that? The text should be
above the ordinary text when you look at the HTML.

  • Yosemite made everything slow?

I just now updated my Mac to Yosemite, since it had been running really sluggishly and I wanted to make sure I had all of the most recent updates to stop all that.
But when I open up my flash project files, something's weird. It's like they're all running a little slow, like it's struggling to play them at the perfect (normal) speed.
Can anybody help me? I've put a lot of time in to this stuff and now it all looks messed up. : (

I'm sorry for not being as detailed as I should have been! Only the playback runs slow, and it's only when I play the timeline and watch the stage. Previewing the movie or the scene works just fine.
I haven't noticed any tools running slow. It's a really weird issue, and very specific - a slightly slower playback when I'm playing it in the timeline. But as any animator knows, even a slightly slower playback can be catastrophic to a piece!

  • IPad 3 iOS 8.0.2 some apps don't work, everything slow

IiPad touch updated to iOS 8.0.2. worse than any of the ios 7 updates.  It seems that lately ever update makes things worse.  My pad has never been so slow.  I now have some apps that don't work as they should.  iPad and AT&T have never been happy with each other but now freezes and just taking so long to access some websites and why go from one move to two to close a website.  Makes no sense to me.  Maybe I am just not used to it yet, but it takes about twice as long to close a web page.  My pad is 32 gig and I have 14.9 free. As far as a fix, I am about ready to throw this pad in the lake and go back to Microsof, something I never thought I would say.  I have an iMac and just retired my notebook. I am trying a dell with windows 8 As a replacemen. School is still out on that platform but it is better than this ipad. IF some one has similar problems and fixed, please let me know.

Since the vast majority of iPad mini users are not having WiFi problems then, if you are having consistent WiFi problems on all networks, you very likely have a hardware problem with your iPad mini. This probably cannot be fixed by any iOS software update. The iOS 6.0.2 software fix likely was for a bug that only showed up with certain access points or network configurations. The only way to get your problem fixed is to get your iPad mini replaced by Apple. The fastest way to do this is via the Apple store but you can also arrange for replacement if you contact Apple support.

  • Everything Slowed Down....Dump All Caches?

After updating my system last night, my MacBook was very slow on reboot and both Safari and Firefox are very slow as well. Another member mentioned dumping the caches in the home folder and HD folder. If this is recommended, would someone please provide me with exact instructions on which caches and how to dump each. I do not want to lose anything important. Thanks!

I'd select +Safari > Empty Cache+ from the Safari menubar.
And make sure you have at least 15% of your boot volume free.
If that doesn't help, download the (free) OnyX app, from: http://www.titanium.free.fr/index_us.html
Select the Cleaning icon in the toolbar, then select the various tabs and caches you want to delete.
(I omit +Form Values+ and cookies from the Internet tab, and most of the logs items, but your desires may be different.)
You also might want to rebuild the Launch Services database, and some or all of the other items in the +Maintenance > Rebuild+ tab.

  • After installing Mav. everything slowed and curser freezes about 15 secs.when switching from off to online.

iMac slowed down after installng Maverick.  The pointer freezes for about 15 seconds every time I move from an online document to a computer app/document.  240 GB still available on HD.

The problem is that during WEI testing there are a number of files read and written to the primary disk. My guess is that on your first try the SSD was relatively clean, so all writes were consecutive and the score came out at 7.4. Now, after having used the SSD for some time, your score deteriorated to 6.5, because of the flaw in SSD design, that causes a severe performance hit on writes after deletes. It is somewhat similar to disk fragmentation on conventional disks, although much more severe. That is where trimming comes in handy, because it alleviates this write speed degradation.
Don't hold me against these figures, but it is not uncommon to see read speeds of say 220+ MB/s and write speeds of 140+ MB/s advertised. These figures usually apply to new disks and without trimming after some time these figures may change to something like 200+ R and 50+ W. It is this slow down in Write speeds that kills the benefit of SSD's. Trimming has gone a long way to solve that issue by around 90% but not all SSD's have the trimming function and when using raids, the number of controllers that support trimming is still very small.
The WEI is not a real good measure of performance. For instance the Velociraptor is always 5.9, despite being a very fast and capable conventional disk. If you were to use WEI to measure the performance of another disk or array, things would look completely different, like below:
This is a run with an overclocked i7-920 at 3.6 GHz with only 12 GB 1333 memory, running @ 1500 MHz, and a large raid30 array.
BTW, loading PS in 3 seconds in pretty normal for conventional disks as well. It is about 2 seconds on my Velociraptor.
