Everything to trash

We don't know how it happened but all our photos ,movies and documents went to trash. It's a lot of stuff. Our iphoto events appear as blank squares. At times, we can even see glimpses of what once appeared there. And I tried to move them to the sidebar to get access but now I can't get them off the sidebar... over 3000 files. Help?

Thanks for trying to help Terrance, I've restored my photos but my sidebar still has 3000 files on it and I can't believe I have to pull them out one by one. Also, the Mac is slowing down. Lots of instances when when the whirlly bird icon shows up and I have to wait. Mouse is beginning to act up also. I hadn't set up the time machine yet (we're very new at this) and when I try to I don't get any disc options to set as backup. I'm in a little pain. My loving wife did this while I was at work. In spite of this, isn't it amazing that people will take time out of there busy lives to help technically challenged but motivated people like us. Steve.

I'm assuming that you have no backups?
I recieved Data Rescue 3 in a MacUpdate bundle and tried it out for deleted files. It worked really well, recovery 94% of the files that I had trashed and then emptied.
It's $100 but so are the other consumer oriented data rescue applications.

The best utility I've found for that is the free utility dupeGuru.

Sorry to hear that.  Read Beware MacKeeper and try to get your money back.  If you don't believe that search for MacKeeper in this forum and read of the dozens of dis-satisfied users and a couple who liked it.  There is no way it can help you undelete files after the fact.  It does this by keeping a copy of everything you trash in a hidden file which will quickly fill up your hard drive.  About the only thing that will be able to recover a deleted file is Data Rescue.

  • Empty trash quickly

I have over 100,000 files in my trash. I know there's a command to empty the trash or delete all the files at once. Can someone let me know what this is or if there is another way to get rid of these files quickly?
Does TM copy trashed files? That could be the reason I have no more room and I get errors trying to backup with SuperDuper.
The problem that led to this - I tried to completely erase the files from an external drive. I got a message "unable to unmount disk" or something like that. So I erased the files. I guess I should have gotten to the bottom of why I couldn't use disk utility to erase my files. Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

Press Shift, Command and Delete keys to empty Trash.
    Does TM copy trashed files?
Time Machine backups everything, so trashed files are included in it

  • Smartfolders full of emails from Trash

My Smart Mailboxes (Mail 4.6 in Snew Leopard) used to be a massive time-saver.   Past tense.
They are now clogged with multiple copies of each email (mainly gmail) message, many being in Trash (where multiple means as many as 50 copies of each message).   I have deleted everything in Trash.  The unwanted messages also include  Drafts, which I do not keep and have also become a time-waster.
The messages in Trash show up as two copies a minute, which is infuriating, since the Trash I manage is empty.
Equally baffling is the "Mailbox" called "Important" - not found on my Mac.   Should I be looking elsewhere?
I often set up the Smart Mailboxes to have all mail To or From certain sets of individuals. This means that sometimes I use ANY of 10 or more conditions.  Until recently, this worked fine.
Just what are these mails in Trash mailbox, which appears to be empty.   The Mailboxes storing the contents of my  Smart Mailboxes appear to be restricted to about
Any suggestions as to how I can regain my productivity?
    Thanks

To partly answer my own question:
The mailboxes are not on my Mac!
Multiple messages in Trash disappear on emptying the Gmail Trash folder by logging directly into Gmail.
There does not appear to be a way to manage this from within Mail but I would be happy to be corrected.
Five minutes spent on this  = massive improvement in productivity.

  • Mail for Mac on new hard drive won't import Mail from old hd

I recently installed an additional hard drive (running Tiger), but I kept my old one (running Panther), too, to use as a backup.
After resolving a few snags, the data and apps transferred over OK, but two days ago I (very foolishly) tried to make a change in the name I use as Administrator (or at least that's what I meant to do), and all the apps on my new hard drive forgot their passwords, preferences, etc.
    What a pain!
I'll eventually get all the preferences, etc., set; but Mail on the new hd also lost everything--addresses, trash, sent messages; and that's got me baffled.
My old hd still has Mail on it (including addresses, etc.), but I haven't been able to import data from it to Mail on the new hd.
In the new Mail, under the File menu, when I choose "Import Mailboxes" and select the button for Mail for Mac OS X, then navigate to Mail on my old hd, it's faint and can't be selected.
Suggestions of any kind would really be appreciated. (And from now on, I'll just live with my name being misspelled as Administrator!)
    Thanks a lot,

    Richard,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
When trying to import a pre-Tiger mailbox created with Mail, use type "Other", instead of type OSX.
However, if you can replace any copy of the Mail folder on your Tiger drive, and any com.apple.mail.plist in the Preferences folder of your Tiger drive with copies from your Panther drive, Mail will open to say it is ready to import Mailboxes, and will then convert all the mailboxes at once.
However when finished, you will need to check for leftover files, that can become problematic, and to check to see if full conversion took place. See:

  • Why is my SSD filling up with phantom data?

I have a 2007 Mac Pro (2,1) (waiting on the new one) running OSX Lion 10.7.5 with 9 Gb of RAM.
I installed an after market 240Gb SSD from OWC that I use as my boot drive.  It is about 85% full with 37.8Gb free space.  I've had the SSD and Lion installed for a long time without any problem, but in the last few days I have twice gotten a system message tell me that the boot drive is full and to close programs and delete data.  Using Get Info on the SSD, I have verified that it is full, with only about 240Mb of data free.  By the time I get this message everything is trashed and my only option is to force quit everything and restart the computer.  This has happened without any abnormal usage on my part.
After the re-boot, my SSD was back to normal with the same 37Gb of free space available.
I don't have Time Machine turned on.  I use SuperDuper for nightly local back up and BackBlaze for continuous offsite.
I called Other World Computing and asked if Trim may be an issue, I don't have it turned on in Lion.  They told me that shouldn't be a problem, that they don't recommend turning on Trim in the OS; that their drives compensate for that on their own.
Since the first time it happened, I've periodically looked at spare capacity via Get Info but have never found an odd increase.  But the last time, I was gone from the computer for an hour or two to find the 'memory full' message again displayed when I came back.
Can anyone offer any information as to what might be going on?  I can't think of any new software that I've installed lately or any changes that I've made in my computer work habits.  About the only thing that's new is that I updated iTunes to version 11.0.5.  Can't see how that would have had any effect on this.

Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • MacBook and 10.6.8 wifi issues

I have a MacBook 1,1 and still encounter connectivity issues with my WiFi when I attempt to upgrade to 10.6.8
I have re-installed 10.5.8 and have absolutely NO problems with WiFi connectivity, however, when I install 10.6.8 I cannot remain connected.  I have five other devices which have no problems staying connected, so I am certain it is not my router.
I've read dozens of submissions by others who have tries everything from trashing 'corrupted' preference files to resetting the SMC, but the problems returns.
It appears that I can initially connect, however, in a few minutes I loose connectivity, despite the Airport indication of a strong signal (with no exclamation mark, by the way).  If the machine goes to sleep, it immediately loses connectivity upon waking.
Has anyone found a solution to this issue?
My MacBook otherwise operates perfectly -- Mac OS X 10.6 is thew highest version that my processor will run.

  • Files/Folders Sticking to Mouse Pointer - Not Releasing (Reset PRAM & Apple Hardware Test Fail to Run)

I've been having two issues with my Late 2008 MacBook Pro 15-inch - Running OS X 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion).  Unable to Reset the PRAM and Run Apple Hardware Test (AHT).
On a random basis - File/Folder icons are Sticking to the Mouse Pointer - Not Releasing.  I've done everything from trashing finder preferences, making sure Universal Access preferences are off, Restoring Defaults in the Energy Saver System Preferences, Resetting the System SMC.  Another post mentioned that this is being caused by the Graphics Driver not working correctly - and mentioned to put the MBP to sleep, then wake it up, and the files/folders are no longer sticking to the mouse pointer.  This works for me and released the sticking items in the Finder.
OK, Good this is a simple fix, BUT, what is really causing this issue, and how may it be fixed or repaired?
I also tried to Reset the PRAM and Run the Apple Hardware test (AHT), and these both fail to run on my MacBook Pro with OS X 10.8.5.
    1) Resetting the PRAM:
Shut down the MBP, press the power button, and hold down at the same time <option><command>-P-R.  The Reset PRAM process never starts up, but rather I receive the Padlock/Password Login which logs me into the Restore System Utilities.  I'm unable to Reset the PRAM.
    2) Apple Hardware Test (AHT):
Shut down the MBP, press the power button, and hold down the "D" key, the system boots up as normal and does not enter the AHT.
The File/Folder Finder sticking to the mouse pointer issue is very annoying.  Does anyone have a solution to resolve this issue?

    HI Barbara,
It sounds like the hard drive is failing or has failed. Boot from your Mac install disc and if you can run Disk Utility in case the startup disk needs repairs.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you cannot boot from your install disc, try booting in Safe Mode

  • Mail & Exchange Server - app icon says there's unread mail, but there isn't

    Hi folks,
I upgraded to Snow Leopard a while ago and dragged along my hosted Exchange account (myhostedsolution.com) which I used to access via my iPhone & Entourage. With 10.6 I naturally switched over to Mail.app.
Now sometimes I get this odd bug: The Mail.App icon in the docks says there's one unread message (indicated by a red circle and the number one in it) however there is no new email in any of my folders. I checked everything Spam, Trash...
    - I have no rules or smart folders set up
    - my iPhone correctly states that there's no new mail on that account
My life may not depend on it but it's just one huge annoyance..
    Help anyone?
    S.

I can corroborate this. Fully updated snow leopard, with an Exchange 2007 account. Office and home machines configured alike. After a day at work, receiving, reading, deleting mail, and leaving no unread messages in the inbox, the home machine shows unread messages next to the Exchange inbox, and on its dock icon, but there are no unread messages in the inbox. Quitting and relaunching mail causes it to show no unread messages.
As the previous poster noted, this is a real annoyance.

  • ITunes Library Relocation Issues

My iMac was acting a bit funny, so i backed up everything i needed on two separate external drives. I copied and pasted my entire iTunes folder with library files and everything, then trashed the itunes folder on my local drive. Now I would like to start accessing my iTunes library solely from the external drive to leave room on my local drive.
For some reason, whenever i locate my media, it creates a second itunes folder on my local drive in my "Music" folder. how can i stop this from happening?
also, it doesnt seem to have retained my play counts.
i realize after some research that this is not the suggested way to relocate and entire itunes library, but it seemed logical.
    I'm running iTunes 10.5.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.8
    any suggestions?

Yes the **** spinning beach ball once you visit the first webpage and about min later

This is for keychain access and I click on Change All
Now the spinning rainbow colored beach ball again for 2-3 mins, yes that is correct
and things are okay but the browser is slower than before the upgrade.
I crash and then start over again.
Before people start suggesting me tips on what to try.
I will list what I have done so far.
    1. verified keychain access and fixed the duplicate
    2. verified and fixed disk/file permissions using disk utility (this was no necessary but I did it anyway)
    3. Reset safari as I have backup of everything of my bookmarks etc on .mac
    4. Well started restarting my Macbook Pro like a Dell Machine.
This is looking more like a Dell/XP upgrade.
    Apple Geniuses help is appreciated.

    Hello Raj,
First of all, Welcome to the  Discussion forums!
It appears that you have tried everything but trashing the .plist file for Safari 3.1.
I have to say, I use an older version of Safari on Panther 10.3 but I would try trashing the preference file and see if that corrects the issue. It should be in your ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist.
If not, I would try investigating if it might be a font conflict issue.
    hope that helps,

  • Sent message not listed in 'Sent' box

My mail server is AOL. In Mail, I've got two sets of mailboxes per the default setup - my local in, sent and trash along with the AOL saved, sent and spam boxes from the AOL server.
The AOL boxes are always spot on, yet occasionally I will send a message and it won't appear in my local sent box. It happens sporadically.
How and why is this happening?
    Thank you.

As an experiment, I tried deleting my Sent box (after archiving the things I cared about) and got no error msg re. "protected" boxes or anything else. Mail deleted the few remaining msgs from it but, instead of deleting the Sent box, added a superfluous toggle, i.e., as if it contained sub-boxes, which it didn't. Thereafter, I could send but no copies appeared in the Sent box. (Sound oddly similar?) "Rebuild" was grayed out for it, too.
I was able to correct everything by trashing the associated folder, restarting Mail, and then sending myself another msg to create a new Sent box for myself.
I'm suspecting a glitch created an extra, problematic Sent box on your system sometime ago and you've gotten used to it, thinking it's normal.
Do you find it useful to have 2 Sent boxes? If not, you may be able to delete one the same way I did and your problem should be solved.

  • Pls help - Displaying Simplified Chinese characters

    Hi all,
I am using Servlet to generate HTML.
    When I use setContentType="charset=big5" and out.println(" . . . ."); with Big-5 Traditional Chinese characters, everything is fine.
    However, when I use setContentType="charset=gb2312" and out.println(" . . . ."); with GB2312 Simplified Chinese characters, everything is trash with some ??????.
The internet browser in both cases can correctly set to the appropriate character set, that is, in the 1st case it is big5 and in the 2nd case it is gb2312.
    Pls help

It should be because the font provided cannot handle the characters. Java only ever sprays question marks or rectangles at you if the font you're using is incapable of displaying what you're trying to show.
I'd imagine that the system's default font is capable of displaying Big5 Chinese characters quite happily if it's working on the page. The problem will come when you switch the encoding of the page and the characters within it. The same default font obviously can't display GBK stuff. So switching the font (probably through the use of <FONT face=""> tags) might do the trick.
    Hope that helps!

  • Symlink? - MacDropAny

    Hello,
I was trying to sync two Macs using MacDropAny. From what I can tell, it creates symlinks using a GUI interface but I'm not completely confident in that statement. I linked the Desktop folder on my Mac to the Google Drive folder using the software. When I went to delete the link, by dragging the copied Desktop folder in Google Drive, back to its original location, as instructed on the MacDropAny website, nothing happened. I uninstalled Google Drive and tried to delete the desktop folder within the Google Drive folder, but this moves everything to trash. Does anyone know how to remove the link between these two folders? I know to work the command line if it's easier to provide instructions that way. Thanks in anticipation.

Seems to me that the oopsclick website/download server is 'down' or misconfigured.
