Everytime I close a tab a new blank tab opens on its own.

Hi,
I'm using Firefox 6.0.2 and it's a while that I'm facing this problem. Anytime I click the little X to close the tab (sometimes I have to click it 2-3 times) it closes the tab but a new blank tab opens itself. For example when I start with 1 tab, open 3 tabs from that page so I have 4, I want to go to another site and close everything about my first site. Then Firefox gives me the new site + 4 blank tabs that can't be closed.
When I open Firefox it works well but after 10-15 minutes or I don't know maybe 1 hour or so this problem appears.
I did not install any new plugin or extension (maybe updated my existing plugins) .
It's not a virus, malware or anything. I'm using Avast home edition (Free) and it updates itself every day several times. I also scanned my system with tdsskiller (read on a forum that solves the problem, but it didn't).
I'm using firefox for years, but this problem is happening only from a week ago.

do you have any toolbars or extensions installed in windows control panel > software or in firefox addons-manager > extensions, that might cause this behaviour? try running firefox in Safe Mode (close all other instances of firefox and open the browser while holding the shift key) and see if the problem is persisiting there to diagnose the issue...
edit: you also have the "Fun Web Products Plugin Stub for 32-bit Windows" plugin installed, that comes bundeled with some toolbars
from the system details you've submitted it appears that you are using a out of date version of firefox and a out of date version of the java plugin - both are a severe security issue! there were dozens of vulnerabilities fixed since the release of firefox 6. and java versions before 6 update 31 are vulnerable to drive-by-infections (your pc can get infected with malware by simply visiting a website), which are widely exploited in the wild.
i'd recommend that you update both programs as soon as possible: visit getfirefox.com &, java.com; and although you already have a working anti-virus software in place, i'd suggest that you run another full scan of your system with the free anti-malware tool from www.malwarebytes.org in addition (tdsskiller was just a scanner for rootkits).

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See Troubleshooting extensions and themes and Troubleshooting plugins
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.<br />
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.<br />
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

If it is doing it while your device is plugged in, it is because it is set to automatically sync. Please go to: Preferences>Devices, and select the option to "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically." Also, I hate to be "that guy", but you spelt extremely wrong. Just a pro tip.

• Tabs open on their own.

While my computer is idle, a tab in Firefox opens on its own leading to an advertisement site. Why does this happen and how can I prevent this?
== This happened ==
Just once or twice
== Today

Do a malware check with a few malware scan programs.
You need to use all programs because each detects different malware.

• When I close a tab, a new blank one opens that it won't let me close. How do I stop this?

This started only a few days ago, and it's nothing too serious, but it's kind of annoying. If I have two tabs open and I close one, a new blank tab opens. I try to close it, but it won't let me, however, it will let me browse on that tab, just not close it out. I've tried disabling add-ons, and that didn't work. Sometimes I only want one tab open, but it just won't let me have only one tab open.
I've got Firefox version 31.0 and I use Windows 7, if that helps.

There is an option in Firefox to not close the last browser window / tab.
Open a new window or tab. In the address bar, type about:config.
If a warning screen comes up, press the Be Careful button.
This is where Firefox finds information it needs to run.
At the top of the screen is a search bar. Enter;
browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab This should be true.

• Firefox crashes everytime I close a tab; the internet said it was a Norton Antivirus issue, but I contacted Norton and they are not the issue.

Every time I close a tab, Firefox crashes. These forums hinted that it was a Norton issue (and that it had been solved) so I contacted Norton. Spent 2 hrs on support with them, including them remotely controlling my computer. Norton is 100% updated, and the crashes happened EVEN WHEN WE DISABLED NORTON. So, it is NOT a Norton issue. What can I do? This is very frustrating and makes it impossible to continue to use Firefox.

hello, these crashes are the same norton issue that was written about in the forums during the last few weeks (the norton component coffplgn.dll is causing the crashes) - according to symantec the cause fro the crashes wasn't fixed in its 2012 product line: https://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Toolbar-Norton-Identity/Firefox-18-Support-for-Norton-Toolbar/m-p/900991/highlight/true#M8266
so you might want to disable all norton addons in firefox > addons > extensions or upgrade to norton 2013...

• How do I stop Firefox from crashing everytime I close a tab?

Ever since I downloaded Firefox 4.0, it crashes anytime I close a tab or a window.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you.

• Ffox help says "To close a tab, just click its close button." I did this. But still got the message about to close 5 tabs. I could close one tab at a time, in the past but now can't. How do I close just one tab?

WTF? you ask for details then tell me I have exceeded the 255 character limit. Clicking on links in an email I wound up with 5 open tabs. Tried to close the last tab opened. I got pop-up warning I was about to close 5 tabs.

ya I'm aware of the shortcut keys. Been using a mac since they came out. She is used to interaction with the mouse, hence the specific question as to where the X has gone.

• Script Opening In Its Own Tab  In v1.5.4

Morning, this is really doing my head in and I was able to do this in a previous version but I can't find the setting I need
I click on a connection and it opens up a new tab/window with the connection name
I then Ctrl + O, select my script and click on Open but the script then opens up in a new tab of its own rather than the one connected to the database
I then have to select my connection from the drop down and then run the script
I hope this makes sense, can anyone help please
Thanks

Yes it makes sense. This functionality was changed in the move to 1.5. We removed the File -> Open menu option on the SQL Worksheet context menu, to reduce the clutter. This means that you use the remaining File Open on the main menu that always opened a file in a new tab.

• Tabs opening on their own

Whenever I click to open a window, such as clicking on the "ask a question" that started this process, two or three tabs will open on their own. Frequently they are Wizard101 and Download Iliv, or similar sites. These are sites I have no interest it. This happens all day long. Every time I click in a box to fill it in or click on a "learn more now" tab or just about anything I try to do will trigger these tabs to open. I have looked through my programs and add-ons and I can find no excuse for this. I have also ran several scans with my TrendMicro program with no luck. Please help me fix this problem.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

• How do I get rid of clear history pop-up everytime I close a tab or page?

Recently, I believe after updating to Firefox 33.1, I began to get a pop-up window for handling cookies, cache, browsing history, downloads etc. every time I close a page or tab. This is super annoying as I thought that I set-up those functions to be done
manually.

Its not Firefox issue, its Addons you installed in your system
Disable the "Self-Destructing Cookies 0.4.6" and check it out

• When I click images or links that should automatically open in a new window, instead a new blank window opens.

For some time now and after firefox has automatically been updated a few times, I click on images or links which are supposed to open in a new window automatically. A new window opens but it is blank with no toolbars, just an adress bar with nothnig in it.

mha007, Thank you. I walked through your suggested solutions and finally disabled all add-ons and restarted them one by one. The culprit seems to be ViewSourceWith 0.8.11. Interestingly when it is enabled I had to go to TaskManager to force Firefox to quit.
Maybe this information will help others. I don't know if the cache clearing etc helped but I would suggest that others start but Bringing up Firefox in Safe Mode (hold shift when you select the icon), disable all add-ons and then start them one by one.
Of course if you have ViewSourceWith maybe you should just disable it first rather than go through the tedium of restarting each add-on separately. To get to the add-ons when it won't open from the toolbar type about:addons in the address area.

• A new blank window opens and it does not have have the URL I selected in its addressbar.

When I right click on a link and open it in a new window, the URL isn't passed onto the new window leaving the new window blank.

• For about seven months I have pop ups and tabs openning on their own, asking me questions and showing me what I didn't ask to be shown.

For about seven months now (from June 2013) I have pop ups asking me private question while masking themselves according to the results of my browsing. Sometimes they're streaming "news" and other stuff that I didn't ask for. It also may be tabs and not pop ups, that are doing the same. First I was thinking that this is kind of "infection", but all my screenings failed to detect anything answering that my computer is clean. I considered changing the browser, but my computer is weak and your browser is light, differently from Microsoft's one. So now I just close those things as quickly as I can. But, sometimes, when I walk away, it shows whole "movies" to no one, while wasting my resources and quotas.
I just wonder if it is possible to get rid of this stuff. Is it infection or part of the design? And in case it is an "infection", is anybody interested to investigate in order to protect your browser from similar attacks in the future?

Your "More System Details" didn't include information on your extensions, but one of those could be responsible.
Could you check for unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
* Ctrl+Shift+a
* orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt that something is valuable and useful, disable it.
Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
Does that change how Firefox behaves?
