Everytime I plug in iPod Setup assistant starts

I've only had my 60Gb iPod for a month. I've seen variations of this question but decided to post in case soemething new has come up. Everytime I plug in my iPod and itunes starts, I get the Startup Wizard asking me to set up my iPod.
The name of the iPod is already filled in and I see it under source.
I've gone through the set up process several times and the message continues to appear.
The iPod drive letter isn't mapped to a network drive.
I can cancel the Setup wizard and the iPod updates with no problem so it is mostly an annoyance right now. Before I go the uninstall/reinstall route I thought I would check with you folks.

See if this helps

    hi Jetroo!
despite going through a set up & register every time I plug in one of the ipods to Itunes it comes up with the ipod Setup Assitant.
that's not the most common symptom we see with the following issue, but we had better check up on it:
Windows confuses iPod with network drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear

  • "iPod Setup Assistant " request always pops up upon mounting mono 20gb ipod

Just installed 30gb ipod & itunes update onto computer running Windows XP - no problems. I also have a 20gb mono on the same computer (updated itunes and ipod updater as well). Restarted computer. I signed on as the only one using the PC, launch itunes, mount the 20gb ipod. The system does nothing for about 20 secs. then the ipod is shown (as it always does). No problem adding songs to libary or transfering to ipod w/20 gb (except the inital delay). The problem is, behind the itune window a window pops up "iPod set up assistant" with the name of the ipod I just mounted. Window ask me if I want to auto sync my files (I click off the check mark - because I do not keep music on computer otherwise this would wipe my ipod clean). I cancel out, but each time I mount the ipod I get the same pop up "set up request". Any ideas what is going on and how to stop this (so that I some day do not make the mistake of hitting OK in place of cancel)?
I have read the posting below but it falls short of answering my question.
    Thank you in advance.
"How do I set up another iPod in iTunes when I already have an existing iPod/iTunes combo on my computer?"
    Answer:
First things first, lets get your iPod up and running with the correct firmware:
Begin by throwing away the disc that came with your iPod. The software on it is more than likely out of date anyway!
Download the latest iPod firmware from HERE and install it on your computer (by double-clicking the installer icon).
Go to Start > All Programs > iPod > iPod Updater > etc and run the updater application.
When the pop-up box appears, connect your iPod and select the RESTORE option.
When instructed, disconnect the iPod from the PC and connect it to the AC adapter to complete the process.
OK, now you need to decide 'how' you want to manage your music. You have a couple of options:
Using the existing iTunes installation on your PC
If you want to use the same library and iTunes installation, then you can just re-connect the iPod to the computer via the USB or Firewire. iTunes will launch and ask you to register the iPod. To manage your music, you now have two further options. You could either:
Use 'Auto-Synch' to transfer the entire music library and playlist selections to your iPod.
    OR
Use the 'Manual Synch' option to manually drag and drop the songs and playlists that you want on to your iPod.
    OR
Set up a 'Master' playlist which contains all the songs you like, and then set the iPod to automatically synch to that.
Using a new iTunes installation (Requires windows XP)
If you want to keep your new iPod music completely seperate from the original iTunes library, then you can install another instance of iTunes. To do this, you must:
Create your own XP user profile.
iTunes should be accessible using this log-in. If not, then download and install the latest version of iTunes. This can be obtained HERE. (Note: When swapping between User IDs, you should not use the 'Switch User' option. iTunes really doesn't like that!)
Once the iTunes install has completed, you can begin adding your own music. Your music files will be automatically added the the newly created iTunes folder which can be found at C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music.
If you want to keep all the music on the hard-drive in the same place (and minimise the possibility of having multiple versions of the same song everywhere), then you can change the settings in iTunes so that all music is derived from the same location. To do this, go to Edit > Preferences and select the 'Advanced' tab. You can then change the iTunes Music folder location to something like C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents\Shared Music.

To all of those who viewed question but did not have an answer the following is how I resolved my issue. FYI. In the end, although the "Setup..." window came up, it was in fact stating that I did not have the music file within my iTunes. How I resolved the issue was to first click OFF the check mark that advised me that iTunes would automatically update my songs. I did not change the name of my iPod (since it was the correct name). Clicked next and then Finish. This resulted in the window going away and the "Music Store" file appearing within iTunes. The "Setup..." box does not come back up.

  • IPod setup/welcome screen issue

    Hi Everyone,
this is probably simple but everytime I plug my iPod touch into my Mac and iTunes launches I get the setup/welcome" screen in my iPod window (clicking ok takes me to the iPod window)
I will note that this only started occuring since I used a different iPod cable to connect to my machine (I have one from and old iPod Nano)
Is there any way to stop this setup screen appearing everytime I plug the iPod in?
    Regards,
    Peter.

    Software update fixed this issue.

  • Itunes 8.1 crash when I plug my ipod

Since the update, everytime i plug my ipod nano 4th generation. Itunes crashes

    Nutnbolt:
We need to get a crash log file to see where it's crashing. In order to get a crash log on Vista, you will need to enable crash logging.
Important: These steps involve making changes to the Windows registry using the Registry Editor (Regedit). Even if you are very comfortable editing the registry, you should make a backup of the registry prior to editing it. Making mistakes in Regedit can cause strange behavior and can even prevent Windows from starting. Look here for instructions on how to back up your registry in Windows Vista:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756
    1. Open the Windows Start menu.
    2. Type regedit in the search field and click OK.
    3. In Registry Editor, navigate to HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Apple Computer, Inc.\iTunes
    4. Right-click on the iTunes folder and choose New > DWORD Value.
    5. Name the new value "GenerateCrashLogs" without the quotation marks and press Enter.
    6. Right-click GenerateCrashLogs and choose Modify.
    7. Change Value data from 0 to 1.
    8. Click OK.
Now, when iTunes crashes, a crash log file will be created. A message will appear telling you where to find the crash log file. Please email me that file, and make sure to include a link to this thread and the username you are using on Discussions.

  • Bought app in order to sync itunes with a blackberry playbook.  Now Itunes will open on my computer but when i plug  my ipods in to charge or sync, itunes is not showing that they are plugged in. Cant charge or anything!

Obviously not too smart with all this technology.  I puchased a Blackberry Playbook Tablet and wanted to sync my itunes music, so following directions on the Playbook, I downloaded this app - Daniel Bingham Itunes sync - and when I went to my pc, I pulled it up, plugged in my Playbook and it did sync all my music from my Itunes library to the Playbook.  However, now when I plug an ipod in my pc to charge or sync more music, my pc is not showing it recognizes any of my ipods being plugged in.  It makes no mention of any of my ipods being connected!  I also keep getting this "Found New Hardware Wizard" box that keeps popping up everytime I plug an ipod in - it originally showed up when I had Playbook plugged in to download all its info (I think) but it never completes, saying not compatible - so I click cancel. I have since clicked on remove New found hardware but it still pops up. Why does it continue to show with every Ipod now?  Any idea on what I can do to repair this situation?  Please help!

You performed all of the steps outlined in this link?

  • When i plug my ipod in it freezes itunes then the whole pc. Help?

Hey yeah as the topic says everytime i plug my ipod into my pc it reads the ipod for about 10 seconds and then it freezes. Ill click around but nothing responds, and then even windows itself stops working and i have to reset the PC.
What should i do i've tried restorig my ipod but that solved nothing. It used to work perfect.
By the way i'm running Vista Ultimate X64 if that has anything to do with it.

The same thing is happening to me! I just upgraded to Vista and my ipod was working fine. All of the sudden, every time I plug it in my ipod freezes then my itunes says that my ipod is corrupted! After doing online research, it seems Vista's safely remove hardware feature corrupts the ipod! Wish someone would have let me know before I upgraded.

  • Leopard taken hostage by Setup Assistant

leopard has been running great (except for a lot of app crashes), but as of last night, every time i try to log in the setup assistant starts. if i complete the registration process, it logs me out, but when i log in again, setup assistant takes over. "about this mac" and "restart" and "system preferences" and every other menu item fails to do anything. my machine is literally disabled by the setup assistant right now. suggestions? the way the machine has been rendered useless, it feels like a virus or malware or something has corrupted the system. i have no idea why this would happen--the mac did lock up during a software update (my mac loves to freeze up hard every now and then for no reason at all).

thanks. i think i was having more severe problems because i couldn't even get into safe mode. i suspect i had some bad memory (has since been removed, although it's still too soon to tell) which was causing random freezes. it happened during a software update, the recent one for itunes and quicktime. i decided to reinstall os x and restore using my time machine volume, and it worked impressively well. with a couple of hours, all my data was there, all my programs just worked (no more spending hours re-installing adobe software), and 99% of my mac and app settings were carried over, so it's basically like nothing happened. the only glitch was that time machine doesn't have an option to resume from a previous time machine volume--that is, when i noticed it wasn't backing up due to insufficient space, i didn't know what else to do but erase it and start over. i suppose that's one way to protect your data--explicitly forcing a manual erase, in case i wanted to use that volume to restore a duplicate onto another machine? or place it in cold storage; however, i wouldn't've minded the option to carry on uninterrupted. still, i'd call it a very successful practice test of time machine. going forward i feel a lot less concerned about losing all my files knowing i can be up and running again in a couple of hours right where i left off. i remember with windows i'd spend an entire weekend reinstalling the os, apps, coping files, entering serials, downloading drivers, etc. i'm sure there are plenty of backup programs on the market, such as retrospect, but this simplicity and integration speaks to just how mature os x has become.

  • Every time I plug my Ipod touch 4g in my computer to itunes, it deletes all of my apps on my ipod. How can I stop this? x

    Hey Guys,
I got an Ipod touch 4g for Christmas and am having a few problems. Firstly, everytime I plug my ipod into my laptop onto itunes to put music onto it, all of my apps on my ipod get deleted and I can't go on them. Have you got any tips?
Your help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks xxx

It appears that you previous synced the iPod with another iTunes library/computer. You can only sync with one iTunes library.  If yuy try to sync with another library the iPOd will be erased and its contents replaced with the contents in the iTunes library of the computer.

  • New IPOD w/Existing ITUNES, CAN'T download 7.4 & NO SETUP ASSISTANT?

Ok. I have two ipods. Now Three... My One IPOD has been updated with new version 7.4, my other one-(shuffle) was updated with 7.4....but..
I just got the new IPOD and when I connect it to my computer, it does not send me through the Setup Assistant....just tells me that I need a newer version of 7.4 to use the IPOD.
The problem comes when it directs me to the 'Download 7.4 version'...I hit the control key and says "thank you for downloading itunes"..
THe issue is that I already have iTunes and it asks me if I want to replace my existing itunes setup?
I say ok,and save it and nothing....Same screen and no prompts...
With my other two ipods, as soon as I have plugged into my computer; it recognizes it as a new ipod and takes me through to register and stuff....I can't download new version....so I am now in a rutt......
Can anyone help me to understand how I download the new version 7.4 into the new IPOD, so I can get started on the Setup Assistant?
    What am I missing here???
    Thanks..

OK. Now trying to figure out what you are saying here. It sounds to me like you are only downloading iTunes 7.4 to wherever it is your default location is for downloading and not actually installing it.
From what you are saying above it sounds as if you are only repeatedly downloading it and Windows is asking you if you want to overwrite the file it had previously downloaded and saved.
After you download the file does it give you an option to open or run the file? If so you need to do that. If not you need to find where the file is being saved to (save it to your desktop if your not sure where it is going by default) and double click it to start the install procedure.
The tips here may be useful http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976
But honestly it sounds to me as though you didn't actually install it.
As far as the latter part of the question goes. iTunes does not actually get installed to the new iPod. The new iPod Nano does, however, require iTunes 7.4 to be installed.
