EVERYTIME I TRY TO UPDATE SOFTWARE IT SAYS UNSUCESSFULL.WHAT CAN I DO TO FIX THIS SEEMS TO BE WORKING FINE BESIDES THAT?

If your profile is correct you're already on the final version of Snow Leopard (10.6.8). Sure it wasn't Lion it was asking for?
If that's the only version available on the app store, you'll need to source a copy of the iWork '09 DVD - not cheap now - only available via Amazon or eBay etc.

A reset may help. Tap and hold the Home button and the On/Off buttons for approximately 15-20 seconds, until the Apple logo reappears. When the logo appears, release both buttons.

What does "can't easily send SMS" mean? What problems are you having with SMS? Without details, no one could possibly give you a reason or solutions.
Have you tried resetting your device by pressing and holding the Home button and power button until the silver apple appears?

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

On my iPhone 3GS, under the General Settings, and the STORE app, there is an option for Cellualr On or OFF. If this is off, you can only access iTunes when you are on a Wireless connection. Could that be the issue? You have Cellular OFF and you are not on a wireless connection? If you turn it ON, then you should be able to access iTunes via cellular connection.
Not sure if that's your issue or not?

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect to your computer & click on the "Update your device using iTunes".
