Everytime my time capsule initiates, makes brief buzzing sound

Very odd, it's quiet all the time, except, as soon as one of my mac's connects to it, to write a back up to it, or when I access it, when first accessing, for like 1.5 seconds, it makes a mild buzzing sound.  Is this normal? it's always done this, I have no performance issues, but if theres something wrong with it, I wanna get it to Apple while it's still under warranty.

Put your hands on it next time..if you feel it begin to vibrate it is simply spinning up the hard disk.. this is designed to happen. To save power and make the hard drive last longer it is spun down between usage. It only takes a few minutes after usage ends to spin down and should spin up very quickly.
Your location may accenuate the sound somewhat. But you will feel the difference.

If we replace our Time Capsule, what is the best way to handle the data stored on the old TC?
Archive the material via airport utility (old v5 not v6).. to a USB drive of suitable size for all the data.
Do this before the TC dies. Once dead you will have no choice but to repair it.. or to open and remove the HD and put it in a holder.

  • Is it possible to install mysql-server on a Time Capsule and makes it a server mysql database?

Network to share files in time capsule 1Tb now need to install a system that uses data from mysql database.
Is it possible to install the server-msyql the time capsule to make it a server database?

The Time Capsule is not a proper computer.  It has a very stripped down embedded OS running a file server that offers AFP and SMB access to the files stored on the Time Capsule.  And even that is primarily to support the Time Machine backup system - the fact that you happen to be able to store other files on a Time Capsule as a result is a (not particularly great) bonus.
You cannot install a database server on a Time Capsule.  In theory, you could install a database server somewhere else and use the Time Casule as the location of the data files...but you shouldn't (and you shouldn't want to do that either).

  • I want to move my photos from iPhoto to Time Capsule to make space on my computer.  What's the best means of doing this?

I want to move my photos from iPhoto to Time Capsule to make space on my computer.  What's the best means of doing this?

    Please do not do this.
The Time Capsule was designed for your backups.....not as an everyday hard drive. Access to the Time Capsule is slow.
If there is any loss of connection between iPhoto and the iPhoto library when you are reading or writing, the entire iPhoto library is easily corrupted.
The chances of corruption are even more likely if you are using wireless on the computer.
And....even if you decide to risk this....if you move your "original" iPhoto library to the Time Capsule.....how will you make backups of the library?
The only copy of the library will be on the Time Capsule....you have no backups.....when, not if, the Time Capsule has a problem.
Simply stated, I would never do this with any important data that you cannot afford to lose. Please post in the iPhoto support area if you need to confirm this.

If you do want an idea of how to move your iPhoto library correctly, post back and we can help.

  • Does anyone have a new MacBook Pro that makes a buzzing sound on startup?

My new (60 days) MacBook Pro makes a buzzing sound on startup- does anyone else have this issue? Thanks!

    Keep at the Genius Bar.
For one, you have a default 1 year warranty, which you do not want to let expire.
For another, that chine is a critical part of the system, that for some is an annoyance but at least it sticks around.
At some point, they have to either fix it or give you another (at least in my opinion they will eventually have to give me on that chimes).
Make a very good clone before you go back in.  CarbonCopyClone ($40 download).  You will need to clone it back onto a new system eventually, I suspect.

  • HT1178 i can't connect the time capsule with my mac using the aiport utility. i want to use the time capsule to make backup for my mac book pro. the time capsule is giving a flashed amber light. please advice me

the time capsule is giving flashed amber light and i cant connect it to my mac book pro. i want to use it with the time machine to make backup for my mac. please advice me.

To do the setup, plug it in via ethernet.. do not try to setup over wireless.. Once it is setup you can plug the TC into the network and use wireless.
Most likely you will use the TC in bridge to an existing modem router.. but we cannot help as you have no details of the network setup.
I do recommend in the setup of the TC you use SMB type names.. that means, short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.. as later Mac OS do have issues with long names, spaces and that apple shocker, the apostrophe.

  • Can I use Time Capsule to make clone of system BEFORE I upgrade to Leopard?

Am still on Tiger but have just bought Leopard. I'm looking at cloning my hard drive before I do anything.
My question is this: do I have to buy an external drive and a Time Capsule, or could I buy just the TC and use that to make a clone of my existing system before I do the upgrade? I need to keep costs down.
Also, is anyone able to recommend a good 500GB (I have 350GB used on my hard drive at the moment, though I can probably get that down) external Firewire drive?
I currently only have a 7/8 year old 80GB Maxtor external drive, and have been backing up iPhoto/iTunes etc (a bit haphazardly) to DVD.
    Many thanks.

Sorry- Thought about that, but no location listed.....
Important features of an external enclosure would be an Oxford chipset firewire interface.
This enclosure uses ATA drives (separately, of your choice of drive).
Better, would be SATA drive support, like this 500gb drive enclosure.
This 750GB drive looks good also.

  • How do I selectively erase old data from old computers on my Time Capsule to make room for my new computer data?

My new computer did one complete backup on the Time Capsule now I get the message that there is insufficient room to complete further backups.
(128 GB available, my backup size is 170GB but the time capsule is 998GB)
I suspect that information from old computers is there. How do I selectively remove that information or do I have to erase the whole Time Capsule and start over with my new computer and backup again?

Check the info here.. but big warning .. it often fails.. if you want to keep your old backups archive them off the TC to USB drive.. then erase and start fresh clean backup.

  • Time Capsule update makes me input IP/Secret info

I updated the firmware on my Time Capsule, and it shows an error that my Apple ID is incorrect. This is true because I originally used the Time Capsule and Back to my Mac with MobileMe, which iCloud with your Apple ID has superseded. I tried to change my Apple ID, but when it tells me it needs to update that upon closing the AirPort Utility, it says "IP cannot be left blank" and forces me to input my "Primary RADIUS Server IP" and "Primary Shared Secret." I don't know what these are or why it's making me do this. Help?

I recently applied the Time Capsule Update. It backs up 3 computers. It is a 2T Time Capsule.
When I did that from Mac A (a core duo), it told me that the backup it had would need to be replaced by a new backup. And then it put a lock on the backup file. So now I am making that new backup for Mac A.
What about Mac B and Mac C. (Both core 2 duo) They continue to back up to the Time Capsule. Do I need to create a new backup for them even though I received no message indicating that?
Did Software Update on those Macs show the Update? If so, download and apply it, and see what happens.
If I don't create new backups for Mac B and Mac C, do I know if the backups are OK?
If Software update doesn't show the update for those Macs, it's apparently not needed.
What is the reason for the new backup? I have looked on the support pages, but cannot find any info about this.
Yes, this is new and nobody's been able to figure out just what it's all about. Some folks who don't even have Time Capsules have gotten the update. Some get and apply the update, but don't see the message.
We don't really know if the update is being applied to the Time Capsule itself, or to OSX on Macs that have, or back up to, Time Capsules.
So, see what Software Update shows for your other Macs, and let us know. That may give us a clue. By the way, are they all running 10.6.2?

  • What's wrong. everything runs top notch, PSU makes a buzzing sound? maybe a fan runnin at low RPM?

    Specs are in my sig,
Everything runs A+, I stress tested with Prime95 and memtest 86 with 0 errors and pass 3dMark 2001SE and 3dMark 03 with flying colors and play all my games with everything maxed out without one single hiccup.
My power supplies voltages are A+ too, I'm thinking that the buzzing is caused by the bottom fan on the PSU, as it's thermaly controled, it's running at a low RPM because the temperature in my case is very cool with all the fan's I have.
    1 x 92mm @ back
    1 x Exhaust fan @ back
    1 x 92mm on windowed side panel
    1 x 80mm @ bottom front
1 x 80mm on opposite side panel blowing on HDD rack
    1 x ThermalTake Silent Boost K8 HSF
So ya everything runs very cool, do you guys think it's the PSU's bottom 92mm fan running at a low RPM because the temp is cool in my aluminium case?
    Thanks for any advice guys

I use an Enermax 365P-VE FC, and I notice a buzzing sound too.  It is very high pitched noise that increases when the hard drive is active or when I am doing something thats 3D intensive.  It doesn't sound at all like a fan.
The noise bothered me so much that I went out and bought one of Enermax' new "Noisetaker" 420W power supplies.  When I installed the unit, I noticed that the buzzing sound was even worse than my old power supply!
I'm no engineer, but I think the high pitched noise is coming from the power supply's inverter/diode.  Hard disk drives and video cards require tons of current, and it is no coincidence then that when these devices are active, the power supply is working harder, causing it to make even more noise.  A bigger power supply (reqiures a more powerful inverter?) and would probably cause even more noise, as was my experience with the 420W Noisetaker.
Do us a favor though, when you talk to a professional about your power supply, ask them about the power supply's "inverter" or it's "diode" (I forget which is which, but I know one is used to convert AC into DC which is what a power supply does)  and how much noise it would typically make, I'm almost sure that is the source of your buzzing sound.

  • HT201250 how do I delete files from my time capsule to make space available for backup?

I'm getting a "not enough room to complete backup" type message.  I thought timemachine cleaned up its own older backups but seems to need help.  How can I manually remove older files?

    Thanks Allan,
Help me understand what question you're referring to.  I've been through several new macs and am not sure what specifically you're speaking about.
My old mac had a partition on the drive that I do not want on the new mac, so I am concerned about doing a full restore and prefer a file by file or folder by folder. is this possible?

  • How can I make sure time capsule is working?

How can I check time capsule to make sure it is backing up?

Suppose time capsule is working and I delete some pictures. Will I just need to remember what date I deleted pictures and just keep that date in mind to know pictures from a certain time only live on the time capsule?
This is a very good way to lose your images.
Time Machine keeps track of the changes on your Mac. If you delete files on your Mac, Time Machine will "backup" that change....and at some point it will delete the files from the Time Capsule......you just don't know when this might occur.
It might occur within the next day or so, or at some point in the future. You cannot predict this.
But, even if the files stay on the Time Capsule for a few weeks......these are your only copies of your images. You have no backups in the event of a problem with the Time Capsule.

  • Problems with my Time Capsule since updated to Mountain Lion

Since I have updated my MacBook Air (late 2010 model) to OS X Mountain Lion, I am experiencing problems connecting my Macbook Air to Time Capsule and experiencing problems in Time Machine copies to the Time Capsule:
    1.- When I turn on my computer, Time Machine starts working, taking a lot of time searching the backup disc (my Time Capsule), then appears an error message (Can not find the disk or it says that the Time Capsule is already in use);
2.- After several attemps (restarting the computer and restarting the Time Capsule), sometimes Time Machine starts to work, but it shows that it has to copy approximatly 28 G. Also the copy is to slow (it only copied 500 Megabytes in two days).
In the meanwhile the Time Capsule light is turned on (green) - so it seems the Time Capsule is working normally an the problem would be Time Machine.
I would not like to restart everytime my Time Capsule or restart my computer in order to make Time Machine works. I would really appreciate help for solving this problem (I apologize for my so basic English).
My Airport Utility Version is 6.1 (610.31)
    My Time Capsule Version: 7.6.1.
My Computer: MacBook Air (late 2010)
My System: OS X Mountain Lion (when I used OS X Lion all was working normal)
Thanks in advance for your help !!!

The first backup after an update will be quite slow (but shouldn't be anywhere near that slow).  And the searching on the backup disk will have to be repeated on every backup attempt until one completes normally.
Connect to the TC via an Ethernet cable.
Also see the green box in #D2 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  Something there may help get back on track.
(and your English is fine -- better than many who speak it natively, I'm sorry to say.)

  • 'Preparing' Time Capsule stalls in this mode

I've had a number of problems with my Time Capsule. I'll admit I'm no genius when it comes to this stuff. So I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem.
I've finished my initial back up and now whenever my time capsule initiates a regular back up a box appears saying 'PREPARING' and seldom does it make it to actual back up mode, and when it does, it will back up the additional information and state it has completed all for instance 250MB but then appear to still be trying to back up. The process really slows down my computer and when I try to turn off the back up sometimes that will take another 10mins to occur.
    Thank you

I was just checking to see if they may have updated time machine w/ the time capsule firmware to fix this problem. It doesn't appear that they have. I've downgraded to Backup. With Backup I don't have the option to restore a single file, I can only revert to a previous backup but it's better than nothing. With Time Machine I had nothing because "preparing" took all CPU resources forever. It's too bad they don't care enough to fix it, it could actually be a good application. It appears that no one from Apple ever reads any of this stuff, I sent them all the info from the console and everything. I've enjoyed a lot of apple stuff, Time Machine/Time capsule is not one of them.
