EVGA 285 GTX and Apple's 30- LED release

I just have a question what's taking so long for Apple to release a 30 inch LED display, Currently SamSung XL30 30" Inch goes for $2600, I would be gladly to pay that price because i've been waiting for Apple to bring out a LED 30 inch for 1 year and half and I hope Apple gives the new 30"inch LED Cinema the same design as the current 24" inch but give the power users a choice between Matt with the current design but with LED technology and Glossy for users that want the same design as the current 24 inch LED just like they did with the current 17 inch MacBook Pros, and other thing I would like to ask you would Apple provide adapters for those who has standard DVi input like for example a DVI-D Dual Link to Mini Displayport adapter that will allow older Mac Pro/PowerMac and MacBook Pro/Powerbook models with DVI-D Dual Link jacks to work with our Mini Displayport displays
I know some people that I spoke too would like to use EVGA 285 GTX with LED Displays but that's not possible without an adapter like I mention above will EVGA or Apple will make such Adapter?

My question is if the card has a description of 'Double Wide' does this mean it occupies 1x PCIe 2.0 16 lane slot but as it's 'Double Wide' it obscures the next PCI e slot, effectively taking up 2 card slots? As I have never owned a MP and have not seen the internal spacing arrangements.
The Mac Pro has extra space between slots one and two, so a double size card in slot one does not interfere with slot two.
So in the not so distant future, could you fit 2 x GTX 285 cards in?
They would fit, but there would not be enough power. There are only two auxilary power conectors in the Mac Pro, but one EVGA GTX 285 would use both connectors.

  • Using the 27" Thunderbolt and Apple 24" Cinema LED displays

I hope everything is having a good weekend.  I have been trying to find an answer and no avail I am not able to find any solid answer.
    Setup:
    2011 MacBook Pro 15" (MacBookPro8,2 model)
    27" Apple Thunderbolt Display
    Additional Equipment:
    Apple 30" Cinema HD Display
    Apple 24" LED Cinema Display
Ideally I would like to have all three monitors connected this macbook pro, but I know it may be hard.  At the minimum though I would setting for the 27" and 24" to be the two monitors.  Some time ago, I saw a web posting and a podcast talk about some entity achieving this feat, but it require the Pegasus RAID system.  I have noticed that I cannot directly connect the 24" to the 27" as the result is the 24" has a black screen and the MacBook Pro does not recognize the 24".
Now I have seen products which offer the monitors to be connected using some third party peripherels:
Newer Technology USB to DVI/HTML/VGA display adapter (which uses display link)
Mini Display Port | Thunderbolt +USB to Dual-Link DVI Adapter
Unfortunately the results would mean that my Thunderbolt will not be useful after I connect the 24" since it will not allow any more thunderbolt connections.  That is acceptable, but I will like to hear from anyone who is willing to share their experience.  I cannot find the link to a solution which allow the 24" to be connected to the MacBook Pro thru USB device (siimlar to the display link device).

It appears that a Thunderbolt accessory: "seagate goflex thunderbolt adapter" solves the problem.   Having the seagate device between the two monitors allows the 24" Apple LED Cinema Display to start working.  The solution may not be right for everyone as the adapter is about $179.99 on Amazon.

  • I just purchased an iMAC and Apple just announced the release of the new iMAC

I just purchased a 27" iMAC with 8GB of RAM and Radeon 6970 2GB.....Total was $2,399 before tax and shipping. Will Apple allow me to exchange for the new iMAC that they just announced today?....I feel ripped off!

The normal return policy is 14 days; but I've read of a couple of people claiming that individual stores may extend that - those reports were regarding the iPad.
So, the only way to know is to ask Apple. As for feeling ripped off - why? Do you want/need a CD/DVD drive? The new iMacs don't have one. Do you want a firewire port so you can use your external hard drives which also have firewire - the new ones don't have that either. So, does your current iMac do what you purchased it for? If so, you weren't ripped off. Newer, better, bigger editions of electronics are being introduced daily - it's called marketing.

  • 285 GTX Mac and Windows XP booting with Boot Camp - Black Screen

I decided to update my 8800GT to the newer 285 GTX. Loaded the drivers, a must first, then installed the card. Booted the Mac and wow what an inprovement.
Here's where the problems start. I used Boot Camp to boot to my Windows XP 32 install in Bay 2. Got the Windows Start Up screen then nothing but black.
I reinstalled my 8800 GT and restarted the computer. I installed the latest nVidia drivers (190.38) in XP.
I reinstalled the 285 GTX and tries again. Mac worked fine when I restarted in XP got the Windows startup screen then nothing but black.
I could use some answers to solve this problem. I believe the 285 is supposed to work booting Windows from Boot Camp but I can't figure out how to make it work.
    Thanks in Advance

I know I saw, and tried to help, someone else with the same questions. At that time I think tried to get them to use Driver Sweeper 2.0 and really uninstall drivers and any leftovers.
So there should be another thread here, but maybe also on eVGA forum.
And it doesn't make sense, unless XP or even Apple's leftover Boot Camp drivers. So look for Driver Sweeper 2.0, works better; and there is a thread on evga for removing graphic driver and upgrade.

  • Possible to Use Radeon 4870 AND EVGA NVIDIA GTX 285 at the Same Time?

    Hello,
I just tried to connect a second 30 inch Cinema display to my early 2009 8-core MacPro with a Radeon 4870 card.
The second display maxes out at 1280 x 800 resolution.
I think that is a function of the second port on the 4870, rather than a limitation of the card itself.
To get around this, I ordered the EVGA NVIDIA GTX 285. At $499, that's a big yikes.
Here is my question: Will I get better performance running one 30 inch from the Radeon, and the second from the Nvidia? Can I even install both at the same time? Or should I remove the Radeon and use just the Nvidia?
FWIW, I use this Mac for Photoshop and other image software, and for some stats work. No games. I am using CS4, which would never recognize my 4870. Maybe I will do better with the EVGA NVIDIA GTX 285?
I would appreciate any and all help on this!
    Thanks!
    Charles

I just tried to connect a second 30 inch Cinema display to my early 2009 8-core MacPro with a Radeon 4870 card.
Are you using the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter?
    <http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MjkyNjI0Mg>
The second display maxes out at 1280 x 800 resolution.
That's the resolution the 30" will run at with a single-link DVI connection.
I think that is a function of the second port on the 4870, rather than a limitation of the card itself.
It depends on the adapter you use.
To get around this, I ordered the EVGA NVIDIA GTX 285. At $499, that's a big yikes.
It has twice the graphics memory, so may be better if you are processing lots of large images at once.
Here is my question: Will I get better performance running one 30 inch from the Radeon, and the second from the NVIDIA?
No. For only two displays, one card is better because it can handle moving windows between displays, or windows spanning both displays. With the displays on different cards, the main computer has to do more work. Even if the windows are never going to cross display boundaries, there is no way for the applications to know that, so they won't let the graphics cards do as much as they could.
Can I even install both at the same time?
No. There are only two auxiliary power connectors, and one card will use both.
Or should I remove the Radeon and use just the NVIDIA?
Try each card and see which gives the best results with your applications.
FWIW, I use this Mac for Photoshop and other image software, and for some stats work. No games. I am using CS4, which would never recognize my 4870. Maybe I will do better with the EVGA NVIDIA GTX 285?
The extra video RAM may give better performance with lors of large images.

  • EVGA GeForce GTX 285 and Snow Leopard

Has anyone using the EVGA GeForce GTX 285 upgraded to Snow Leopard? I hesitate to upgrade until I'm certain there will be no problems. And, yes, I have the latest driver installed in Leopard.

    Denny,
No problems, per se, but I have seen a single report of a GTX 285 performing slower in SL than in Leopard (in this thread). I take this report with a grain of salt, and I would recommend you do, too. There are just so many improvements performance-wise in Snow Leopard.
Even if the SL driver for your card underperforms at the moment, the other improvements will undoubtedly more than make up the difference, and the driver will undoubtedly be updated at some point in the near future to correct whatever degradation it is currently causing (again, if this is in fact a real phenomenon).

  • Best stand for MacBook Pro and Apple LED Display

I am buying a MacBook Pro and Apple LED Display tomorrow. I want to have a two display setup, similar to what I have seen in the Apple Store. I believe they used a Griffin Elevator. I want to make sure of two things: that the stand is sturdy enough so that my laptop won't slide off of it and that I can adjust the stand/monitor so that the tops are level (so that moving my mouse from the laptop to monitor and back is smooth - i.e. the cursor doesn't jump up or down.
I like the fact that I can use this setup to go mobile very quickly, but what about my direct Ethernet connection. I wish there were a stand/dock such that I could hook everything up to it and then just undock the entire machine.

How did you solve the problem of closing the Macbook Pro when it was connected to the display and preventing it from going to sleep?
I am thinking about buying one. When I went to the local Apple Store the tech guys told me that it would be necessary to keep the laptop open slightly when connecting it to the display. They said it was something to do with cooling. It didn't sound right to me. I'm sure that Apple didn't solely intend for the Cinema Displays to be used by Mac Pro and Mac Mini users.
There must be a simple way to "dock" or connect a Mac laptop (Macbook Pro or Macbook) to an Apple Cinema display or any other display with DVI input while keeping the laptop closed with an external keyboard and mouse connected and still be able to use the SuperDrive.
I'm very curious about how you handled this.
    All the best for now,
    Ambrose

  • Upgrading from BTO 4870 to GeForce 285 GTX

Quick question, I currently have 4870 512mb installed on my Mac Pro. How much performance gain is to be expected if I upgrade to 285 GTX for gaming? and Aperture? Is the upgrade worth it?
Even if the performance gain for gaming is not significant, how much difference would a 285 GTX make when Now Leopard comes out? are the advantage of Cuda and OpenCL warrant an upgrade? Does ATi has its own version of Cuda and OpenCL for GPU processing?

maybe see a "Graphics Update 2.0
That's hoping the latest is a 1.5. I haven't seen a substantial effect in performance applying this driver. It's still buggy (Kernel panic or two), seems to "chug" at times, and the images in 3D games are much poorer than the Radeon HD 4870. I'm wondering if others, with the 285 or not, notice a difference between ATI/AMD cards and Nvidia cards.
I'm wondering if it is 8800 all over again, or is that just when my headache will end.
Even if the performance gain for gaming is not significant, how much difference would a 285 GTX make when Now Leopard comes out? are the advantage of Cuda and OpenCL warrant an upgrade? Does ATi has its own version of Cuda and OpenCL for GPU processing?
It could be very significant. The 285 might be positioned to do well with Snow Leopard, the Cuda and OCL capabilities in the card would seem a great match to the system. I think that Adobe apps might get a boost.
I don't know how ATI/AMD make their cards, what specific technology they use. But ATI cards have always generally performed well in Macs and for Apple applications, like Final Cut Pro, Motion...
For Adobe users, Nvidia and Adobe have been collaborating for some time now. Nvidias should have an edge there.
But first, unless I'm being too picky, the GTX 285 has some "evolving" to do. Da_m fine looking card though.

  • Apple Cinema Display LED A1267 with macbook air 2011

    Hi
    i have a macbook air 11" 2011 Model A1370, with thundebolt port
    they are offering me a
    Apple Cinema Display LED (24-Inch)
    Identifiers: LED Cinema Display - MB382LL/A - A1267
it comes with the triple cable, magsafe, minidisplay y usb
the question is, minidisplay is the same port as thunderbolt?
i will be able to use it, with the macbook air opened and closed?
it will transmit video and audio or only video?
    thank you

If the USB cable is connected to the computer, you can use the display as an USB hub; FireWire works the same way, but you need a FireWire 400 to 800 adapter or a FireWire ExpressCard to use it.

  • P6-2133W not recognizing EVGA GeForce GTX 750ti video card

    Hello,
I currently have a stock HP P6-2133W desktop, and I wanted to update the graphics.   I purchased an EVGA GeForce GTX 750ti video card ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487025 ), but I could never get video to display through the card.
I disabled the onboard video through Windows Device Manager, but I couldn't find any setting in BIOS to explicitly use PCIE instead of the integrated video, and EVGA's driver installation utility reports that it could not detect a compatible device.   The fan on the card spins, so it seems to be properly installed, and I tried re-seating it into the PCIE slot several times over the course of my troubleshooting.
Through all of my digging around online, I found a few mentions of UEFI BIOS.   Unfortunately, I'm at work, so my computer is not handy at the moment, but  I do remember that my motherboard was AAHD3-HB, and I had v. 7.16 of its BIOS (AMI, I think?), and the HP utilities did not indicate that there were any sort of updates available.
I'm not very familiar with UEFI, so, I guess my main questions are: is my BIOS incompatible with this particular video card?  If so, is there a way to install a UEFI BIOS on my motherboard that would support this card?
I liked the idea of the 750TI, because it seemed to offer pretty decent performance without requiring a new Power Supply, so if this card is simply incompatible with my computer, then do you know of a comparable card that would work for my computer?
I appreciate any and all help with this.

    Hello @BCAstronaut,
I understand that you are having issues getting your HP Pavilion p6-2133w Desktop PC to recognise your new EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti Graphics Card. I believe the reason you are experiencing this issue is the the break in the downward compatibility on the PCIe slots was broken at around the Gen 2.1 mark and you are trying to put a Gen 3.0 card in a Gen 1.0 slot. This in essence makes your computer incompatible with the graphics card you have chosen to use.  I am providing you an article on the overclock.net website titled The final answer to the controversial PCIe x16 version compatibility., where the author explains what I described and goes into how he made the determination. I would advise you review the article if you have any questions concerning the issue you are facing.
I hope I have answered your question to your satisfaction. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Can I put a EVGA GeForce GTX 650 2GB in my HP Pavillion Elite 380t

I currently have ATI Radeon HD 5450 video card that came with my HP Pavillion Elite 380t when I bought it a few years ago.  I am now using new Adobe Cloud 2014 products including Premiere Pro, After Effects , Audition.  I have been getting messages saying the GPU requires approved NVIDIA graphics card and CUDA 5.0 or later, Mercury Playback Engine, etc.  A friend suggested getting  a EVGA GeForce GTX 650 2GB.  I am trying to figure out if that is a good option and if I can put it into my current computer.

    Hi,
I have seen some posts out here where using the NVIDIA 650 was problematic.
I have the same motherboard in my HP e9280t and I was was successful with using the NVIDIA 460 and the 660.  The 460 watt power supply in your PC should be enough for the NVIDIA GTX 660.

           I bought it in 2012
New Graphics Card: EVGA Geforce GTX 960
New Power Supply: Corsair CX 430
    Issue:
I plugged in my graphics card to my new power supply.
I get the Lenovo splash screen, then 3 beeps, then a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left.
If I disconnect the graphics card, and just use the VGA connection, everything works fine.
How do I get my new graphics card to work on this PC?

    hi mwvg79,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
If you boot in to BIOS with F1 while powering ON the computerCheck if you system supports UEFI.
UEFI/ BIOS should have a Uefi option under Boot tab or start up tab Try to set those to Legacy
If non then this is a legacy BIOS already.
also im thinking about Compatibility issues with this card, since this is not listed under the Maintenance Manual as replacement Parts.

  • Black Screen during boot Nouveau EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Ti [Solved]

    Hello,
First I'd like to start off by admitting that I'm a newb, so I apologize in advance if posting this was unnecessary, but I searched, and though I found many similar problems, I could not solve my problem.
As stated in the subject line, I have an EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Ti, and I cannot make it work with the open source Nouveau driver.
When I try to boot the screen goes black.
If I use the onboard VGA, it works perfectly fine, however, when I switch over to the onboard DVI, my monitor never even gets a signal. I have an MSI board with the Z77 chipset and an Intel I5.
I've tried installing the proprietary Nvidia driver and using that. It boots, the problem is I can't change the screen's resolution to anything other than 800 x 600 and my monitor is 1680 x 1050.
I'd be happy using either driver as long as it works correctly.
Oh yea, I'm running kernel 3.4.5 (which I believe is the latest) and the rest of my system is completely up to date, so please don't link me here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1102763
    Thanks in advance!

Okay, then onto the nvidia driver problem.
I can't set the resolution to what I want (1680 x 1050). My only option is 800 x 600 which is pretty terrible.
I've tried a few things with xrandr, but nothing worked.
Yea, I was only using tty because when I start x everything was either too large or couldn't see the command line to start x in the first place.
So how can I change my resolution (I've tried editing xorg.conf but once again, my attempt to solve my problem was fruitless).
