EVP88 Channel Strip for Babylon Sisters?

I'm looking for a EVP88 patch or a Channel Strip with as close as possible Rhodes sound used on Babylon Sisters by Steely Dan....
"Classic Suitcase Mk I" with some adjustments on EQ and chorus comes close, but still lack something. Hard for me to pinpoint what's missing....
Anyone got a customized Channel Strip to share? Thanks.

Having been an owner of a few real Fender Rhodes over my years & considering that Steely Dan used the real thing on that Gaucho album, the EVP88 is just eh' ok & sort of sterile in comparison. What I don't think you'll get out of the EVP88, is that "spank" or "bite" character that a real Rhodes with real steel tines has when you wack the keys.
The Babylon Sister Rhodes sounds like a slow stereo phaser was possibly used, as well as a slow tremlo L.R. panning. Sounds like Fagen used an 88key suitcase model on Gaucho.
There are other 3rd party sample libraries out there specifically dedicated to the Fender Rhodes, that will come much closer to the real thing, than the EVP88 can do.. of which isn't even sample based, but a physical model plug. A real high quality Rhodes sample based library will come much closer to the real thing, than a physical model plug such as the EVP88.

  • A good channel-strip for acoustic-electric guitar?

I'm trying to record a Martin 00CXAE, going directly from the guitars built in pick-up to an Apogee Duet. Since I'm a song writer and know very little about engineering I usually just rely on the default channel-strips, usually it works out great but I just got this new Martin which sounds amazing through an amp or PA but through logic sounds very tinny and the piezo-y twang is really exaggerated. Does anyone know if there's a place I can download a channel strip engineered for direct recording of this type guitar? Or does someone have some tricks they can share?
Thanks in advance for any responses.

With such a good guitar, you really should think about investing in a good microphone and recording the sound that way.
It's very rare indeed for recording engineers to use the built-in piezo pickup of an acoustic in the studio, unless that close-up treble 'twang' is something you're especially after. THese days there are tons of good quality choices for small or large diaphragm condensers in the sub $500 bracket.
You'll also gain a ton of tonal flexibility just by factoring in mic placement and the room, two things that don't come into play with your piezo.
If you're fine with sticking with the built in pickup sound, then I would avoid using Logic's built in channel strip presets. Most of them, if not all, feature extreme compression and eq settings, IMHO.
Record your guitar, add a channel EQ, and start with a 'high-pass' to filter out rumble below 70 or 80hz, then maybe hunt around for some of the 'boxy' frequencies in the 500-1000 range and dip those a few db. Then what you do with the treble is up to you. Boost some 'air' around 12k, or add a gentle rolloff shelf after 8k to knock down some of the clacky pickup tone.
You also might want to look at some better eq plugs like those from URS, Sonnox, or Waves which can help beef up the sound in pleasant yet subtle ways...
Good luck. And get a mic whether you think you need it or not. It'll come in handy someday.

  • Apple midi loops load incorect channel strip

when i preview a midi apple loop in the loop browser it sounds fine, but when i drag it onto an inst. channel it loads up all the wrong channel strip info. it will load the Garage band sampler but the correct samples do not load. I have used Redmatica's EXS manager and the Inst. are connected to the correct samples, and still no luck. even if i go into the EXS24 and try to load the Garage band Inst it does nothing (not even a warning saying it cant find samples) it stays unloaded. this has mainly been the drums from jam pack 2. I have reinstalled them twice. initialized my drive and reinstalled everything .
has anyone experienced something like this?

Good question with a complex answer. Let's say you have three synths you want to layer together, EXS24, ES1 and ES2. On one of those tracks in your arrange window, drop in your midi arrangement, for this example we'll say it's the EXS24. You'll notice a "plug" on the top right corner of the channel strips. Locate the plug on the EXS 24, click + hold and drag this plug to the ES1. Now repeat the process for the ES1 to the ES2. You have now changed all the instruments together, and they will respond to the the midi input from the base synth, i.e. the EXS 24.
To make this easier, it may help you to create a new layer in the environment window and then place the channel strips for those instruments on this layer. This will keep things organized for your workflow, but it's entirely optional. Hope this helps. Check out macprovideo.com for more environment + midi tricks.

  • Solo Button in Channel Strip with Red Line

Solo Button in Channel Strip with Red Line through it and it won't solo?
How'd it happen and how do you get rid of it?
    Thanks!

    Try This----From the Manual
Logic Pro, Express: Solo Safe mode may not remain disabled for a particular channel strip
    Symptoms
In certain projects, "Solo Safe" mode for a channel strip may enable each time you load the project, even after you disable it and save the project.
    Resolution
When a channel strip in Logic is "Solo Safe", it remains audible, even when other channel strips are soloed. Solo Safe is indicated by a diagonal red line through the solo button on a channel strip.
You can manually toggle the solo safe status of a channel strip by Control-clicking its solo button. There are times when you may find that a particular audio channel strip in a project reverts to solo safe mode when you load the project, even after you manually disable solo safe. Here is why that may happen and steps you can take to prevent it from occurring.
A Logic project contains a special audio channel strip used for pre-listening to audio in the Sample Edit window, Audio Bin, and Loop Browser. When you create a Logic project from one of the factory templates, this channel strip is assigned to "Audio 256". This channel strip stays in solo safe mode so that you can always preview audio. The image below shows the channel strip for a new, empty project.
If there is no audio channel strip in a project assigned to "Audio 256", Logic will use the highest-numbered available audio channel for pre-listening. When the project is loaded, that channel strip will be put into solo safe mode. You may find this happens in older projects that you open in Logic 8, or in cases where you have deleted the "Audio 256" channel strip in a Logic 8 project. To prevent this from affecting channel strips you are using in a project's arrangement, follow these steps:
    Choose Window > Environment.
From the Environment window menu, choose New > Channel Strip > Auxiliary. A channel strip will appear in the environment.
Select the channel strip. It will highlight.
In the Device parameter box in the upper left of the Environment window, click the arrows to the right of "Channel" and choose Audio > Audio 256 from the menu.
Select the text tool, click on the name below the channel strip and name it "Prelisten".

  • Moving Patch Channel Strips to Set Level

I have a patch setup I would like to move to a Set level, complete with it's layout, channel strips, plug-ins, and instruments. Is this possible in MainStage 1? How? And, iƒ not, is it possible in MainStage 2?
    Thanks.....

The simplest way is to do it by channel strip, for each channel strip, position your mouse over the Setting block, right click, choose "Copy Channel Strip Setting", go to your Set (insert a new channel strip if you have to) then right-click over the Setting block again and choose "Paste Channel Strip Setting".

  • Changing FX plug in settings for channel strip aliases?

I've been trying to migrate my live performance rig from Kore 2 to Mainstage 3, and truth be told it has not been easy, nor yet successful.  Every time I overcome one roadblock to something that was so easy to set in Kore, another problem presents itself.  Thanks to much help from the users in this group, I got a handle on getting through the biggest obstacle of Mainstage ignoring PG changes to channel strips by using Multitimbral settings.
Here's the next huge stumbling block.  In Kore, I was able to set up any instance (roughly the equivalent of a Mainstage channel strip) with a series of insert effects plug ins, i.e. a piano patch with both parametric and graphic EQ, compression, etc. and was able to choose which effect(s) would be in use or defeated for a given performance preset and change the settings of any of the plug ins and be able to save them on a per preset basis.
While the capacity to load several insert FX exists in Mainstage, it appears that any changes to an effect are global across the aliases.  While I understand that only voume, pan and expression can have separate settings on an alias, I'm searching for some kind of workaround to this issue.  All I came up with was using separate busses for each FX chain each having their own settings, but that seems like a horribly inefficient use of resources.  Has anyone else found a solution to this problem?

That is not possible, because an alias is simple the _identical_ channel strip in different patches. Any change will be reflected on all occurences of the alias.

  • Use audio channel strip settings for instrument channel

How can I use the library of audio channel strip settings for an an instrument channel? I use a virtual guitar (RealStrat from MusicLab) and want to apply one of those beautiful audio channel strip settings for guitars to my virtual instrument.

    This works great, thank You
Is there a way to select the next audio channel strip setting with a keyboard shortcut? I can open the channel strip setting pop up menu with the option key pressed and select "Next channel strip setting" from the pop up menu, but that's not comfortable if You want to listen through 10 or 20 settings When I use the keyboard shortcut "Next channel strip setting" the next _software instrument_ channel strip setting is loaded ...
Is there a way to make the _library display the audio channel strip settings_ for an instrument channel?

  • Channel Strip Settings For Voice Over

Might have screwed something up, or forgot. I record voice overs onlyon Logic Pro. Do I set both channel strips to the left with one circle or the interlocking circles. Or do I set one circle on one and the double circles on the other? I record in mono. I notice when I use the interlocking circles there are two circles near the top. When I use only circle the larger circle near the top disappears. Confused. Just need to know what is the correct settings for VOs. I thank you for your help

If you record in mono, all you need is the single circle. Mono track. Not L, not R, just mono.

  • Creating Folders in the Library for Channel Strip Settings?

When I 'Save Channel Strip Setting As', the new setting appears in my Library of Channel Strip Settings, but I want to create a folder of 'Custom Settings' so I don't get bogged down with a bunch of free-floating settings in my Library.  How can I do this?  Thanks!

Just figured it out.  But in case you're reading this and having the same problem here is what I did...
In finder I went to the following location :
    User/Library/Application Support/Logic/ChannelStripSettings/Instrument
in the 'Instrument' folder I created a new folder and titled it Custom Settings, then moved my settings to that folder.  Now in my Logic Channel Strip Setting Library looks much cleaner!

  • How can I set up a Mainstage channel strip to recognize coarse detune?

Can anyone clue me in on how to get Mainstage 2 to recognize coarse detune?  Right now I have it set up so that a mainstage channel strip recognizes standard pitch bend messages and  I can set the pitch bend range of the associated instrument to 12 (the default for the channel strips appears to be 2), and so standard pitch bend works fine.   But when the pitch bend messages I'm sending are coarse detune, I'm getting zip...nada...nuttin -- even when I have set the pitch bend range for the instrument on the channel strip set to 12.
I don't want to just offset the pitch by a set amount; I want to use coarse detune to bend the pitch by semitones during a performance.  If anyone here has any suggestions or knows how to make this happen, I'd really appreciate your help --
    thanks in advance,
    Lipp

    Hi
The default bend range is set within the Instrument plugin setting associated with a channel strip.

This could depend on the Instrument plugin (which on eare you referring to?).
Try making a knob or fader object in Layout mode and MIDI learn it to incoming PitchBend messages, then map that control to the dtune function.

  • Control only the software instrument of one channel strip at a time with one Controller

    Hi people,
I have a Nord Lead 2 and a Korg Nanokontrol and I want to use these as Midi controllers in the following way, but don't really know how to set up the system:
I have 4 Channelstrips and each has the free software instrument Tyrell N6 inserted. I have the opportunity to change the volume of each channel strip with my faders on the Nanokontrol which works fine and gives me the opportunity to make layers and change also to only use one sound at a time. And this works fine. However, now I want to have the opportunity to change the parameters of each Tyrell with my Nord Lead. But with 4 channelstrips each with a Tyrell N6 I want to have the opportunity to only somehow manipulate only one instance of Tyrell at a time and change the channelstrip for which the Nord Lead manipulates the Tyrell. Is there an opportunity in Mainstage to do that?
Hope it is understandable. Help would be really much appricated. Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Hi DaCaptain,
Thank you very much for your answer. I tried it yesterday, but it doesnt really work for me to be honest. The thing is that I really wanna stick to one patch, so that I can have like one patch for each song.
However, if you might be interested I found a way to do it yesterday on my own. This is how I have done it:
    In Layout-Mode
    - Create Controls for each instance of Tyrell. For my purpose I created 4 times:
                 - controlls for the Filter Section
                 - controls for ADSR1
                 - controls for ADSR2
    - So you have 4 Sections of controllers in Layout Mode. Each meant to controll one Tyrell Instance
    - Now each section gets its own Midi Channel. So all the controllers of section 1 respond to MIDI Channel 1 and the controllers of section 2 respond to MIDI Channel 2 and so on.
    - Now you tell the Nord Lead that it should send via MIDI Channel 1 and you assign the Cutoff-Controller of the Nord Lead to the controller (the one of the first section) that is suppose to control the cutoff of the first Tyrell. And you proceed this way until all the controllers of the first sections are assigned. Then you swith to MIDI Channel 2 on the Nord Lead and assign the Cutoff-Controller of the Nord Lead to the controller (the one of the second section) that is suppose to control the cutoff of the second Tyrell. And here again you proceed this way until all the controllers of the second sections are assigned. Then you go on with the third and fourth section taking MIDI Channel 3 and 4.
    In Edit-Mode
    - In Edit Mode now you of course assign the controllers to the functions in each Tyrell
    Result
    - Now you can switch between the MIDI Channels on the Nord Lead. This is quiet easy because you can assign a MIDI Channel to one of four buttons on the Nord Lead.
    - So if you switch to MIDI Channel 1 you can controll the functions of the first Tyrell and if you switch to MIDI Channel 2 you can controll the functions of the second Tyrell. And all in one Patch with only one controller which is even from the nineties. I find this really great. The only problem is that the Layout might get really messy, if you try to maybe control more functions of each Tyrell. And I really think maybe Mainstage in future could give us the opportunity to create bigger Layouts - maybe with different Windows or something.
Hope you might find this interesting or even helpful.
    See you
