Ex4100 2 Drives Raid 1 and one single disk

Hi I've ordered a wd ex4100 , with 2x wd red 2tb drives and 1x wd red 4TB drives
I wanted to set them up as the 2x 2tb drives in raid 1 and the single 4tb drive just on its own , not in any raid , with the 4th bay spare , is any of this possible?

  • Raid and replacing a disk, do i need to reinstall software? (RAID 10)

I have 4 250GB disks inside the Mac Pro, the first two are striped and the second two mirror the first two.
This gives me, perfprmance and some redundancy (I think) I have only 500GB available in this config so it is quite expensive, but works for me, my question is
"Can I replace the first disk from the set of four and then rely on the mirrord disks (3+4) to write data to the first disk, therby negating my need to do a restore?
Can I use he mirror function (almost a hot swap scenario)?
    Views appreciated

The final chapter is this saga,
I replaced the disk and restarted my system, Disk utility was showing "degraded" for the raid config, I formatted the new drive created a new striped set but could not get the mirror to resynchronize , I tried the command line approach but after some time I was unsuccessful in getting the mirror to rebuild. So I thought this would be a good time to scratch all four disks and try softRAID as a solution, I purchased a full license but I discovered that softRaid only supports RAID 0 or RAID 1 and is not able to create a RAID 10 configuration. (James from SoftRAID explained that this was something being looked at for the future but one of the complexities was how to best represent RAID 10 graphically).
In the end I went back to Apples Disk Utility tool to create my RAID 10 config (ie disk 1 and 2 striped to create set A, disk 3 and 4 striped to create set B and then set A and B mirrored together), restored from backup and all is well.
I still need to figure out/learn how to add a replacement disk and then get the mirror to rebuild, but I proved that I could remove any one disk and still have a fully working/bootable system. Almost there......

  • MSI NEO fis2r with promise raid and 4 SATA disks?

I have been trying to figure this out.....
I want to have a striping across 4 sata disks  3x250gb and
    1x120gb.
I also want my IDE CD-ROM to work.
I can't seem to find the right combo in the Bios on how to set it up
and when I get the raid setup screen it only shows 2 drives not 4.
    Anyone?
    Thanks,
    M

So in short i cannot have 4 SATA drives in a raid since the promise controller only supports 2...
I should be able to put in 4 sata drives in the machine and software raiding them or make them dynamic disks.
Well that blows! Guess I have to go out and buy a 4-port sata raid card.
    Bummer.

  • Mac Pro Internal Hard Drive Raid and Size

I have out grown hard drive storage space on my Mac Pro. Currently, I have a 300 Gig system drive and 500Gig Scratch Drive. I am considering purchasing two 1000Gig drives because I could use a very large volume of video storage.
I would think that an internal SATA drive has a better read when compared to a FireWire/USB 2.0 Drive
In addition I want to RAID the two 1000Gig drives to increase my read/write speed and provide some measure of redundancy.
Any Suggestions as to type of RAID, how to format and create the RAID.
Also any suggestions as to brand of drive to purchase.

please provide guidance...  using windows 7 system management utility to format raid 0 on new drive..? and please provide link to download HP raid 0 drivers... and how to install raid drivers..?
     - Mark

    Hi MarkFawcett,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that you want to install RAID drivers.  In this document for What is RAID technology? it explains what HP recommends.  HP does not recommend using RAID on consumer computers.
That being said, if you are still wanting to use RAID you will need to contact INTEL for the drivers and here is a Intel® Rapid Storage Technology User Guide.
I hope this information helps, please let me know.
Thank you and have a great day!

  • Firewire Drives not showing and no Target disk mode

Strange problem. My two g4 450's one dual and one single will not start in Target disk mode, will not recognize Firewire drives and yet WILL recognize my iSight camera. What's going on?
Have 6 different drives to choose from but none mount. They all work on my G5 & MDD Dual
    Enio

    PROBLEM AND SOLUTION:
One computer does not recognize the other, which was booted into Firewire Target Disk Mode (either by holding the T key on start up, or by selecting FTDM in system preferences as the start up mode).
My particular case: older MBP to newer MBP unibody. I have a cable that is firewire 400 with a firewire 800 tip on the other end (6-9 pin cable). This cable is needed, for instance, if you machine only has firewire 400 but your new machine only has firewire 800 (like the new Unibody MBP). Well, they sold me this 6-9 pin cable at the store, when they should have just given me a firewire 800 cable straight across, because both machines have FW 800. Anyway, I tried the 6-9 pin cable, where the old MBP was connected via its 400 port to the Unibody's 800 port.
No dice. Would not mount, nothing. Repeated restarts, checked the cable and it does work... called Apple tech support, nothing. Researched the web until finally I think I know what it is.
There is not enough power coming from the 400 port to power the 800 port. I tried this 400-800 with my new Mac Mini as well, and it does not work. It does, however, get picked up on the older MBP when using a straight FW 400 cable. I then came across an article saying that someone was told by Apple that the FW bus can, in some machines, not provide enough power for FWTD mode. The solution for 400-800 is to go 800-800, or 400-400 if you can. If these latter don't work (FWTD mode fails to mount the connected computer's hard drive), us a powered firewire hub and connect Computer A to it, then connecting the hub to Computer B.

  • HT1420 I have a number of devices linked to a single iTunes account. Of these devices, two of the originals were computers whose hard drives failed and I was unable to die authorise them before the failure occurred. Is there a way of deauthorising them on

I have a number of devices linked to a single iTunes account. Of these devices, one was a laptop whose hard drive failed, and one was an iPad which died. My question is if it is possible to remotely deauthorise these devices or is it necessary to deauthorise all devices on the account and then reauthorise those devices which are still current.
    Thanks
    Tan Anu

iPads don't count in the number of authorisations, only computers count. Individual computers can only be deauthorised directly on them, but if you have 2 or more computers authorised then you can 'deauthorise all' (which you can only do once every 12 months) and you can then reauthorise the computers that you still have and need (deauthorising a computer doesn't remove any content from it).

  • Script to search all files in specified folder for multiple string text values listed in a source file and output each match to one single results txt file

I have been searching high and low for this one.  I have a vbscript that can successfully perform the function if one file is listed.  It does a Wscript.echo on the results and if I run this via command using cscript, I can output to a text file
that way.  However, I cannot seem to get it to work properly if I want it to search ALL the files in the folder.  At one point, I was able to have it create the output file and appear as if it worked, but it never showed any results when the script
was executed and folder was scanned.  So I am going back to the drawing board and starting from the beginning.
I also have a txt file that contains the list of string text entries I would like it to search for.  Just for testing, I placed 4 lines of sample text and one single matching text in various target files and nothing comes back.  The current script
I use for each file has been executed with a few hundred string text lines I want it to search against to well over one thousand.  It might take awhile, but it works every time. The purpose is to let this run against various log files in a folder and
let it search.  There is no deleting, moving, changing of either the target folder/files to run against, nor of the file that contains the strings to search for.  It is a search (read) only function, going thru the entire contents of the folder and
when done, performs the loop function and onto the next file to repeat the process until all files are searched.  When completed, instead of running a cscript to execute the script and outputting the results to text, I am trying to create that as part
of the overall script.  Saving yet another step for me to do.
My current script is set to append to the same results file and will echo [name of file I am searching]:  No errors found.  Otherwise, the
output shows the filename and the string text that matched.  Because the results append to it, I can only run the script against each file separately or create individual output names.  I would rather not do that if I could include it all in one.
This would also free me from babysitting it and running each file script separately upon the other's completion.  I can continue with my job and come back later and view the completed report all in one.  So
if I could perform this on an entire folder, then I would want the entries to include the filename, the line number that the match occurred on in that file and the string text that was matched (each occurrence).  I don't want the entire line to be listed
where the error was, just the match itself.
Example:  (In the event this doesn't display correctly below, each match, it's corresponding filename and line number all go together on the same line.  It somehow posted the example jumbled when I listed it)
    File1.txt Line 54
    Job terminated unexpectedly
File1.txt Line 58 Process not completed
    File1.txt
Line 101 User input not provided
    File1.txt
    Line 105  Process not completed
    File2.txt
    No errors found
    File3.txt
Line 35 No tape media found
    File3.txt
    Line 156 Bad surface media
    File3.txt Line 188
    Process terminated
Those are just random fake examples for this post.
This allows me to perform analysis on a set of files for various projects I am doing.  Later on, when the entire search is completed, I can go back to the results file and look and see what files had items I wish to follow up on.  Therefore, the
line number that each match was found on will allow me to see the big picture of what was going on when the entry was logged.
I actually import the results file into a spreadsheet, where further information is stored regarding each individual text string I am using.  Very useful.
If you know how I can successfully achieve this in one script, please share.  I have seen plenty of posts out there where people have requested all different aspects of it, but I have yet to see it all put together in one and work successfully.
    Thanks for helping.

I'm sorry.  I was so consumed in locating the issue that I completely overlooked posting what exactly I was needing  help with.   I did have one created, but I came across one that seemed more organized than what I originally created.  Later
on I would learn that I had an error in log location on my original script and therefore thought it wasn't working properly.  Now that I am thinking that I am pretty close to achieving what I want with this one, I am just going to stick with it.
However, I could still use help on it.  I am not sure what I did not set correctly or perhaps overlooking as a typing error that my very last line of this throws an "Expected Statement" error.  If I end with End, then it still gives same
    results.
So to give credit where I located this:
    http://vbscriptwmi.uw.hu/ch12lev1sec7.html
I then adjusted it for what I was doing.
What this does does is it searches thru log files in a directory you specify when prompted.  It looks for words that are contained in another file; objFile2, and outputs the results of all matching words in each of those log files to another file:  errors.log
Once all files are scanned to the end, the objects are closed and then a message is echoed letting you know (whether there errors found or not), so you know the script has been completed.
What I had hoped to achieve was an output to the errors.log (when matches were found) the file name, the line number that match was located on in that file and what was the actual string text (not the whole line) that matched.  That way, I can go directly
to each instance for particular events if further analysis is needed later on.
So I could use help on what statement should I be closing this with.  What event, events or error did I overlook that I keep getting prompted for that.  Any help would be appreciated.

  • One IDE drive and one ATA drive in a single RAID enclosure?

I just got an OWC AL Elite dual-drive RAID enclosure, and was told, by OWC, that I could drop an IDE drive and an ATA drive into the enclosure and it would work fine.
It's not - If I unplug one of the drives, it works fine: the drive mounts and shows up in Disk Utility, but when both drives are plugged in, it doesn't mount, and Disk Utility sees the drive as a single 2TB drive (one drive is 300GB the other 160GB).
any thoughts? I have the jumpers on the drives set at Cable Select, I tried them both on Master and the drive wouldn't even show up in Disk Utility.
    thanks

Yes. I have it. They sell a model for ATA drives and SATA drives. Go into the "external enclosures" section and scroll down about halfway. It's in the multi-drive section.

  • Which Build and what drives for a raid? One for Harm Maybe :)

Hi, I've been waiting to get an evga sr-2 but they are so hard to get a hold of at the moment I was starting to wonder whether I should go for something like this in the meantime. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-031-OB
I always wait longer and do big upgrades instead so am willing to wait another month if necessary to get my hands on an sr-2 but was looking at Harms Beast spec on the premiere pro benchmarks and noticed he gets pretty impressive results from a single i7
Just wondering if overclocked sr-2 running at 4.2Ghzplus is worth twice the money.
Also, No matter which board i end up with the first step will be using their onboard raid to run a raid 5 array with 6 discs. (they don't do raid 3)
Eventually I plan to get an areca card but don't know what drives to use. WD Re4's (2Tb) seem to be pretty good for raid and critical use for at £200 they are a lot more than WD blacks. Just wondering what to do for as it's alot of money especially if I decide to get an areca card and use raid 30?
    Thanks, Michael.

    Michael,
As you can see, Chris' top rank in the PPBM5 Benchmark reflects the enormous power of dual X5680's. Admitted, it is much more expensive than a similarly overclocked single i7-980X, like Studio North. However there is a distinct advantage of a dual Xeon system, in the sense that you will have 12 DIMM slots and can easily use the very affordable 2 GB sticks to get 24 GB, which saves a lot in comparison to 6 x 4GB sticks on a X58 mobo. Or you can expand memory to 48 GB should you desire so.
You may have seen this review already, but in case you missed it, look here: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/motherboards/2010/08/17/evga-classified-sr-2-review/1
If you consider that there will be further improvements in multi-threading and in some exporter modules in CS Next, the advantage of more cores and more memory will probably increase over a 980X.
As for disks, the WD RE4's are a great choice. Depending on your storage requirements, and your timing for an Areca controller, it may make sense to start with the 1 TB version or the 1.5 TB version and then later add another 6 x 1 TB or 6 x 1.5 TB. That will give you a 12 disk array with the same gross capacity as 6 x 2 TB for approximately the same amount, but because of the larger array will give you better performance or in the case of 1.5 TB models even more storage capacity. I would advise against the Caviar Blacks because of the TLER issue.
Planning ahead for the Areca, you have to keep in mind a way to transfer your data from a mobo array to an Areca array. You may have to first create a new 6 disk array on the Areca, copy your data from the mobo array to the new Areca array, then move one disk at a time from the mobo to the Areca and define it first as a hot-spare and then expand the array. You have to do that for all the existing disks, but that way you have no problems in getting all your data on the new array intact. I probably would use a Raid3 or Raid5 with one hot-spare, so you end up with 11 x Raid3/5 plus one hot-spare, or a 12 x Raid6.
    Hope this helps.

  • Boot Priority with Raid and Single Drives.

I thought I would share something that I discovered yesterday after struggling to get a Sata Raid array to play nicely with a single sata drive.
Sorry if this is already widely known but I couldn’t find any reference to it.
    Setup:
    MSI K8N Platinum SLI
    2x 160GB Maxtor DM10 Raid0 Array (Windows)
    1x 160GB Maxtor DM10 Single Drive (Backup)
The main issue I was having was no matter how I setup the array and what I set as the first boot device windows would always try to boot from the single drive.
The array was set to bootable when it was created, and it set to be the first device under the hard disk boot priority sub menu.
If I  tried installing windows with the single drive plugged it would always be seen as C: drive and would copy the boot files here even if I selected D: (array) as install location.
If I tried unplugging the single drive and installing windows, it install and boot correctly from the array.
But as soon as I plugged the single drive back in windows would look for the boot files on it and tell me there was an error and no boot files could be found.
When looking through the bios I noticed a setting called “Extended IDE Drive”, this makes the drive appear as an IDE drive so that there is no need to install the sata driver F6 on install.
Once I set this to No/None the drive disappeared from the bios but after a reboot windows saw the drive correctly and allowed me to install windows to the array which was now correctly drive C:
Once windows was installed, the drive appears under the raid controller same as the array drives.
The drive is fully accessible and working natively with the sata drivers installed.

Quote from: jarvo on 30-January-07, 04:38:13
Yeah, not matter what the HDD order is winxp always tries to boot from the single drive when its plugged in.
Not sure if this only happens to me or if other people have had similar issues.
IDE drivers becomes automatically as 1st HDD. you need to switch them.
have you arranged hard disk boot priority? (not main priority)
have a try to push "F8" or "F11" during post to popup menu, and choice correct HDD to boot from there.

  • Stuck: Need Disk repair but DVD drive dead and only have USB 1

[1 Ghz flat-panel iMac with USB 1 ports (no USB 2) and also Firewire 400]
I noticed a strange discrepancy (small but concerning) between the size of a folder on hard drive (folder of all mp3's with no subfolders) and the backup of the same folder on a mounted thumb drive.
(The size difference was not due to any invisible .DS_Store files and both folders are displayed in List view format.)
    Disk Utility reports three things:
    1. Incorrect number of thread records
    2. Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    3. Checking volume information.
Volume free block count",0)   [I might have mangled this line]
(It should be 13438611 instead of 13437937)
Here is the GOOD (but these are useless as explained under the "Bad"):
    - I have a Tiger 10.4 boot DVD for a repair ==>but see below
    - I also have a Disk Warrior disk (never used)
    Here is the BAD:
    - My built-in optical drive [Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105] is -- I now discover - defunct and DEAD - it does not run the Tiger Boot DVD (in pristine shape).
    - I bought an external SuperDrive (unopened) but I believe no boot from USB 1 is possible in PowerPC so a SuperDrive with USB 1 is useless.
    Questions:
1.) Is there any way to boot from some external source (optical drive is DEAD) to run Disk Utility and/or Disk Warrior? -- I see none in this case! (gulp).
2.) More importantly (and this is my fundamental concern): Do the three Disk Utility hard drive issues constitute any direct threat to the integrity of my files?
I have almost everything backed up to duplicate thumb drives over these many months as standard practice.
Are these Disk Utility errors fully isolated to hard drive directory-keeping...or do these directory damage errors pose the possibility of mangling or harming my files or their metadata (filesize, etc.).
Put another way, when files are backed-up from a hard drive under the Disk Utility reports above, do they remain unharmed and undamaged by the situations reported by Disk Utility?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Jeff and Michael,
Thank you both for your generous and thoughtful input.
Michael: As I slept on it overnight, the exact same idea occurred to me of trying a Target Mode to the iMac from my Lion MacbookPro (I have it but stupidly have yet to use it much!).
I did buy a Firewire 800 (MBP) to Firewire 400 (iMac) adapter cable a few months ago!
CONCERN: Would there be potential compatibility issues or risks in running Lion 10.7's Disk Utility against the hard drive of the old OSX 10.4 iMac in Target Disk Mode?
==> Assuming an "it's ok" answer to the Target Disk question, would the majority of users agree that the Target Disk Mode would be more prudent than running:
fsck -fy   in Single User Mode
I have never done fsck -fy before especially because I was under the impression there were issues with Journaled drived but from what I have read today...it looks ok to do)
Jeff: Can't thank you enough for the reference to the OTW DVD drive. I might first invest $10 in one of those DVD lens cleaner disks that I've read about. It's probably not the issue or else why would the drive read commercial Music cds perfectly well!
    Thanks,
    Bilil

  • Is there a way to combine two backups on separate disks created by time machine into one on a single disk?

Is there a way to combine two backups on separate disks created by time machine into one on a single disk? One backup is a continuation of the other and was created when I rec'd a message that the 1st disk was full. I'm using a iMac (late 2010) and both external drives are WD. Thanx.

With the timeline selected, go to File/Export/Movie and export each as a DV-AVI video.
You can then combine those AVIs into a new project with virtually no loss of quality.

As we all know, it will depend on the amount of footage and resolution as to how much needs to be transported around. Given that its DV or HDV and I'm guessing only a few hours of fottage then there are a few 2 drive esata boxes about which are as portable as some lacie/gtech drives.

or one of the new GTech drives that have a sata port as well as fw could be good.
Re the 2 bus issue, I would be delighted to be wrong about it. It is through the Avid tech support that I got this info. Todate, I have not been able to get my avid mojo to work on a Lacie PCMCIA FW card at the same time as I have FW drives attached. This seems to sugest that they are not 2 busses, to an avid at least.
Thats why, for portable editing, I am moving towards a macbook pro with esata card for storage and fw free for other uses.
