Exabyte VXA-2e Firewire Tape Drive Software recommendations

Hi all.
I have an old Exabyte VXA-2e Firewire Tape Drive that I keep around to access the old tapes. Moving from computer to computer I eventually started using TimeMachine for backup to SATA Externals. I moved important stuff off of the tapes to get faster access to the stuff I backed up.
I am running out of space again and decided I am going to build or buy some type of NAS box. This will involve buying some more drives ultimately and maybe some new backup software that will run off of a server. I am thinking of just using Time Machine over a network but I haven't decided yet.
Unfortunately while cleaning some drives and getting rid of old software and documents to make more space for new stuff I wiped a system disk that was on the G4 this was running on. The Exabyte VXA-2e Firewire Tape Drive came with included software when I bought it. I am pretty sure it was some light edition of Retrospect but I can't recall. I have the old G4 (not in service minus drives), a Power Mac G5, an iMac, and Mac Pro Tower.
Here is my delema. I want to get the VXA working again as I still have some files on there that I never went through. I would also like to use it for as long as it will run as a redundant backup system. I have run out of space on all the drives I currently have and will most likely just buy an external harddrive but until I get the more expensive NAS up and running I would like to avoid spending any unnecessary funds. Since I can't locate the cd with the driver and software I looked on their site. Retrospect has changed hands several times and there is no availble downloads other than the Utility. Oddly enough I found my CD storage box and I have every other OS, Utility, Script, etc that I have ever used so I am thinking it's lost or fell out of the box during a move.
Can anyone recommend some very inexpensive software that will backup (and control) the tape drive? I am willing to use open source/free alternatives or to buy used software. I thought about an old copy of Retrospect but I can find any. The new stuff looks great but since the minimum will require slapping down about a bill ($100) I figured that I should just use that money to buy an external in the next couple of days while I sort out the bigger more robust NAS plan. I also looked for BRUs lite software but they don't sell it anymore.
BRU is a good product but it's out of the budget for now at least until I figure out the NAS.
I just need some creative thinkers to make some suggestions that I might be able to employ so I can start cleaning off some of the other drives because I plan to use the SATA I, II, and III drives I have to put in the NAS. I will probably use PCIe cards or firewire/usb host cards to ulitize all the drives. You might be wondering why I want to save so much data and it's really simple. I have asset libaries and client work product which I often need to go back to either because they want some element re-done in a fresh way or because I can actually re-use some work product on new projects for other clients. I often take mockups and demos and re-cycle them by submitting them on new projects so I can offer more than one choice to clients during demo submissions.
Anyone got any ideas?

Hi Ivan,
Thanks for taking the time to link to this. It will probably help someone else. Yes you are correct. I believe that it is the full installer. I made this post then went and looked at the box I had. It's Retrospect Express. I probably should have been clearer on that. I believe Retrospect Express is a light edition.
I did try that installer and it doesn't look like the version I was using. For some reason I am thinking it was version 4.x or 5.x Another issue is that the version you linked to required a license. I don't recall if the version I had needed one but if it did I would have kept it with the disk in a disk box I have. It's not in the box.
I also contacted Retrospect and sent them the license and asked if they could help or make a suggestion. Their reply was "The program is not supported anymore and due to change of hands we no longer have records regarding your registration. Please buy the new product"
Another issue is that I had someone help me set it up when I first started using it. I needed to get it up and running before I actually had the time to read the documentation. Dantz' first manual was probably the most confusing manual I have ever read. (Or as my daughter would say "ever, ever, ever, ever" kind of like the way Taylor Swift sings it). ;-)
I suppose I may have to start looking for someone on Craigslist who has an old retired copy they would be willing to sell me. Then maybe I could use the version you linked to. All I need is the ability to control the tape. Read/Write/Erase. I will even forgo the index rebuilding feature for when an index get corrupted until I figure out my NAS box.

  • Tape Drive Software

I don't understand this forum at all. If anyone ever sees this, please let me know.
I have 2 x legacy HP tape drives, one is a DAT, the other a DLT. I've got tapes, cleaning tapes, cables, and SCSI adapter cards. The one thing I don't have is any software that can use them. I ran across my original DLT drive software today, and it tried to install Colorado Backup II, but failed because of the OS. (I'm running WinXPProSP3 right now.)
From the disk I found today I ran the diagnostics, and, after 10 years of 'storage' the DAT passes all tests with flying colors. Even the tape s are still good.
One thing to keep in mind is that I would prefer freeware software. Well, actually I can't afford anything else right now.
Does anyone have a 'favorite package' of freeware tape drive software that they recommend? I'm not interested in "Well a friend of mine's friend told me that BLAH is pretty good, but that was 200 years ago." If you don't use it personally, please don't recommend it.
Once again, my computer is a handbuilt with AMD 3+ running Windoze XP Pro with Service Pack 3. The DAT is a Surestore DAT8I. The adapter is an Adaptec 2940CU, and it all works fine. I just need some software to make use of it.

    Hi:
This is the consumer support forum.
You probably need the business support forum when dealing with issues such as tape drives and the like.
Here is the link to the general tape forum.  You can decide which of the two categories you want to copy and paste your post to.

  • File backup to portable hard drive - software recommendation

Just wanted to share my experience backing up an NB505-N508BN netbook, for those interested in backing up their C drive.
Bottom line: I strongly recommend Free software called "EaseUS Todo" from the CNET downloads site.
Strengths: very good user interface. Does a lot of hand-holding and provides descriptive feedback of what is happening. Also was quite fast: for my 32bit Netbook with Atom processor, creating a 40+GB image file took about 1 hour, and on my 64bit Acer PC with triple-core AMD Athlon II processor, creating a 50GB image file took about 30 - 40 minutes.
[Updated on Aug 3, 2011: Have also been able to do "Incremental Disk partition backup" and "Incremental File backup" with no problem at all. The sw guides you through it neatly. The sw also has tools to pick and explore any backup image file - full or incremental, to see what's in it.]
I used a Verbatim portable drive (usb 3.0, but connected to my usb 2.0 netbook or usb 2.0 PC, so I got only usb 2.0 speed) that came with bundled "Nero" backup sw. Nero was relatively poor in terms of user interface and hand-holding. And it really did not work. The "time left to finish backup" indicator showed tens of hours left and the needle hardly ever moved (I gave up after 40 minutes and achieving 19% of the backup and no further progress, and went over to the CNET site to find something better. CNET editors and users both recommended EaseUS Todo quite highly on their site, and the sw was free, so I downloaded that.
I have no particular affinity for any sw company or brand; I just like sw that works. But if you are a first time backer-up like me, I'd say don't bother with anything else -- download the Free EaseUS Todo from CNET. It works perfectly with the NB505 netbook and you can get it right the first time.

    Wozzy,
it is saying that the S.M.A.R.T Status of the drive is not supported
S.M.A.R.T will only support the drive that you boot from.
Like Miriam says you can use SuperDuper. You can also use Carbon Copy Cloner:
    http://www.bombich.com/
With both these applications you can schedule periodic backups.
Will I be able to use with a USB external?
Yes. The 2.0 USBs are bootable but only w/ Intel Macs.
Unfortunately I've already purchased a WD USB external.
Yes depending on the model there have been reports of problems w/ these drives.
Also, will I be able to set the scheduled backups so that it's only pulling specific...i.e. docs, music, photos..and new data each time?
W/ Super Duper I think so. W/ CCC you can:
"* Fast, incremental backups copy only the items that have changed since the last backup
    * Archival backup archives items that have been deleted from the source
    * Back up to hard drives or to disk images"
It's free but if you like it, like I do, you can donate money to support them as I have.

  • SATA to Firewire hard drive enclosure recommendations?

I just picked up my new MacBook Pro last week and am planning to sell my Dual 1.8 Powermac and white MacBook soon.
I have a 250GB 3.5" SATA drive in the PowerMac that I want to keep and put in an external enclosure for use with my MacBook Pro.
Any recommendations on SATA to Firewire 3.5" external hard drive enclosures? Of course I'd prefer it be as small as possible.
    Thanks

    I like this one.

  • -36 errors, can't copy files in finder or backup to tape drive

Does anyone know what causes -36 errors and how we can eliminate them? We need to backup our files, but have been unable to do so due to -36 I/O errors in Retrospect. Files on which this error is reported by Retrospect will not copy in the finder, either. I think our hard drive may be bad. How can we recover our files if they cannot be backed-up or copied?
We recently purchased a tape drive for backup, an Exabyte VXA-2 FireWire Tape Drive. We are using VXA-2 V23 (230m) 80GB/160/GB Data Cartridges. I have verified that this drive is supported by Retrospect and that we have the correct tape cartridge. We are backing up one partition of a hard drive that is divided into two partitions. One is the start-up partition, the other is a partition on which we store customer files. We are backing up the partition that stores customer files. The tape drive is attached to and backing up a Macintosh G3 that was recently upgraded from system 9 to OS X 10.3.9 (Panther). The hard drive was not re-formatted before OS X was installed. I have downloaded updates and updated our Retrospect to the latest Retrospect version 6.1.126. I keep getting read errors when trying to backup the customer files partition, although I have ran every good repair program I know of to that partition — TechTool, Disk Warrior and Disk Utility. The tests all say the drive is OK. The only test I have not done recently is a surface scan, as this is an over-night procedure, but plan to do it this evening. A surface scan was done at the beginning of January, but we have continued to have problems. Yesterday morning I ran Disk Utility and it verified that the partition was okay.
I am fairly certain the problem is not with the tape drive, as a test backup up of some of the problem customer files to a file backup on the startup drive also produced many -36 errors. Also the tape drive worked on another Mac with no -36 errors.
The following is an excerpt from the log of last night's backup when the program was backing up (this is a very small portion of the whole log, there was a very long list of files it reported read errors on) Following this excerpt is also an excerpt of errors reported while the program was trying to verify the backup:

The only suggestion I have come across is to copy the files to another drive, but this is impossible because the problem files cannot be copied. If anyone has any other suggestion for fixing this, I would appreciate any input. Thanks.
Mac G3 Blue & White 300 mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Original hard drive replaced with a 120 GB Maxtor 6Y120P0

Tech Tool, Disk Warrior, and Disk Utility all work to make sure the directory is Okay. They do not read every block.
I think you should do the surface scan you spoke of. What program do you use for this?
If you cannot copy a file in the Finder without an I/O error, the file is damaged or the drive had bad blocks.
Be sure you also downloaded the drivers module when you updated retrospect.

  • Which DLT Tape Drive for Replicator

Which brand of DLT tape drive is recommended for DVDSP4 authoring? The DVD+R DL discs are good but the replicator would like for me to use a tape drive. Using Mac G5 w/dual 2.7 Ghz Power pc. 2gig ram. Thanks

    Hi Ray,
A DLT 7000 (make sure it says "LVD SE" on it somewhere, and that you acquire the proper active terminator, along with an ATTO SCSI card to hook the DLT up to, for installation in PCI slot 2 if you're on a G5) using Type IV tapes will get you the fastest writes, while staying readable by all replicators.
A DLT 4000 (same as above) using Type III tapes is just as compatible with replicators, but darn slow writing in comparison.
A DLT 8000 (ditto) with Type IV tapes is the fastest writing in this legacy class of devices, but some replicators might not have one of those drives around. In that case, an 8000 can be set to write at 35G density (instead of 40G), so the replicators 7000's can read it's output.
    Take care,
    Trai

  • Can not mount old Exabyte 8505 tape drive

Up until 2001 I was using an Exabyte 8505xl tape drive to back up video (using exatape 160mxl or sony QGD-160M 8mm data cartridges; 160 meters - about 7Gb each). The software used to store to tape was Optima Technology Desktape Pro (see http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/3608
for more details). I was using Mac OS 8.1 at the time as well.
I still have the tapes but can not now mount them to retrieve the data - Optima came out with a newer version of their software (called DeskTape Pro 5.7) - it allowed me to mount one tape but since then has refused to work.
    Has anyone had similar problems
    Any inexpensive solutions
    Any suggestions gratefully accepted
Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Older tapedrive backup

    njsharp,
This is where I would start if you value your data.
Confirm the hardware. Start from scratch without disturbing what you have. Get another hard drive for $4.00 or less. Do a clean install of system software (8.1) and DeskTape Pro. See if you can get the drive to recognize the device. Look at Drive Setup. Will it see it, even to say "this device not supported' or "cannot be initialized?" Rule out hardware issues.
Buy backup hardware. That has a double meaning, no pun intended. Buy redundant hardware. Watch thrift stores or check on line for older Macs that had DAT or other 8MM drives. Buy the whole computer for $5.00. Recyclers have spare parts as well. If you get to Seattle on occasion, email me and I can give you directions to sources near Safeco Field. I just about said the King Dome. It has been a while since that was around.
Then tackle software issues. You said the new software worked once. Are all extensions installed and selected? Are any corrupted? Will reinstalling the extensions revive contact for one more try?
I had some Earthlink software that killed OS 8.6. I did three clean installs in a row to learn that the software would only allow one connection to the internet before corrupting a file and require a clean install. Having an archive CD (not an install CD) of my personalized system allowed me to rapidly replace my entire system folder by booting from the CD with extensions off, trashing the old system folder, making a Finder copy of the archived system folder from the CD over to the hard drive -that will not work from an install CD because it is missing key components and your Exabyte software- and then rebooting from the hard drive.
Decide how valuable the data is and to what measures you are willing to go. If you are willing to tinker, the Northwest has its share of resources. I presume that you would like to solve the issue without spending $285 here:
    http://www.pacificdata.com/vxa11200102.html
    Good luck.
    Jim

I've just purchased a Western Digital Mybook Pro 500 gig. It only cost me £180 and Its works excellently with large DV files and heavy graphics. File transfer rate is rapid using Firewire 800! They even have a 1TB model that's RAID 1/0 capable. Check out:

  • Recommendation for Tape drives/library connected to DPM on virtual machine

    Hi,
we are running DPM as a virtual machine in an hyper-v environment. Now we want to add long term storage -> tape. I looked at virtual tape libraries (firestreamer) but as I want to store the "tapes" externally for DR scenario I thought that this might
not be the best way to go.
We would prefere to use a "traditional" tape library. The best option I found would be iSCSI tape libraries but the only ones I found started at around 6000 US$. As I will be backing up only up to 1.5 TB/night I don't want to spend that much money. In addition
I don't know if they are really going to work.
The other option I saw was to use a SCSI to iSCSI Bridge and connect a SCSI tape library that way. I found solutations for around 3000 US$. Which is still a lot but better then the iSCSI Tape drives.
Does someone else have recommendations or some other ideas what works best? The only entries I found so far were from 2008 and I am quite sure that things have changed since then.

I looked at virtual tape libraries (firestreamer) but as I want to store the "tapes" externally for DR scenario I thought that this might not be the best way to go.
Actually, it might, you can use removable media to host the virtual tape files created by firestreamer and take the removable media offsite.  So instead of rotating physical tapes, you rotate physical removable media.
    Closing for housekeeping.

  • Can PB boot from an External Firewire Hard Drive?

Can I set up an external firewire hard drive as an emergency boot drive, in case my internal drive goes south? Anyone have utility software recommendations for setting up boot drive or mirror drive, in addition to OS X's Disk Utility? Thanks.

    Photon2:
Yes, you can set up your external firewire HDD as an emergency boot drive.
Here's what you need to do:
    1. Your HDD must be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    2. (Optional) I suggest you partition your HDD so that the first partition is roughly equivalent to the size of your internal HDD. The rest can be partitioned for other uses. (See Dr. Smoke's FAQ Backup and Recovery) For step-by-step for formatting and partitioning please post back).
    3. Use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable clone of your internal HDD to the external firewire HDD/partition.
Please post back with further questions or comments.

  • Anyone aware of a tape drive solution for the iMac?

I have transitioned to an all digital video workflow and use an Intel based iMac as my editing system.  Since I no longer use the mini-dv tapes, I need to find a reliable storage solution to archive my original footage.  I believe LTO tapes to be my best bet.  I'm having trouble finding an external tape drive to work with my iMac because I don't have a SCSI interface on my iMac or can't locate a tape drive with a Firewire or Thunderbolt interface.  Any suggestions?

In the past I used Roxio Easy VHS to DVD for Mac - VHS to DVD Conversion Mac Software, but that was back in Leopard/Snow Leopard and I don't see support for Lion.
Another thing that also worked well for getting those old mini vhs tapes into the iMac. Was to connect either the tape camcorder or the video tape in a mini tape adapter up to a standard DVD recorder and burn a DVD that could be imported into iMovie or your video software.

  • Tape Auto-loader Recommendations

I have an Xserve RAID that has grown to about 1 TB of data. Currently I am backing up to single SDLT drive. A full back up, which I do weekly, takes about 4 or 5 tapes. I'm thinking it is time for an auto-loader (tape library). I'm looking at the Exabyte VXA-320 PacketLoader mostly because of its $2,300 price tag.
Has anyone had any experience with this device? Are there any other devices that I should be looking at?
    Thanks
    Henry

I'm a little surprised at the media costs of SDLT vs.
VXA, although I've not spent much time looking at VXA
    so you're undoubtedly correct.
I was looking at the media prices for SDLT 600 ($100) vs VXA ($60). Currently, we use SDLT 320. I was enticed by the SDLT 600's backwards read compatibly. But the SDLT 600 has the highest tape cost.
I think I'm going have to flip a coin to choose between the LTO-2 and LTO-3. The LTO-3 tapes cost twice as much as the LTO-2. However the LTO-3's hold twice as much as the LTO-2's, so the tape cost is a wash. The LTO-3 drive is $1000 more than the LTO-2.

  • A Firewire External Drive to use as Bootable drive?

    Hello fellow Apple enthusiasts,
1.1 I was hoping one of you might care to suggest how would I go about using my Firewire (FW) drive as a bootable drive?(I believe during restart I press the "T" key to initialize this process)
It is a 120 GB drive that I have partitioned into 2 parts a 30 GB which has my apps, etc, and an 80 GB section with work files.
1.2 Should I just use an app like Super Duper to clone my G3 and iBook HD's? (hmmm maybe just one of them) But that would limit my ability to use the FW for all and any HD's
1.3 I do have a bona-fide edition of Tech Tool 4, should I make an "eDrive" on the FW to reboot from? or install Tech tool on the FW as an app itself?
1.4 Or possibly one of you may know of a better suggestion to make a part of the Firewire drive a drive that can rescue other Macs, namely my own

1.1 I don't think 'T' is what you're after - that will boot your computer as an external FW drive.
Given a bootable FW drive, you can either (1) choose it as your Startup Disk in System Preferences, or (2) hold down the Option key while restarting/booting and choose the drive from the options displayed. I believe that (1) is recommended but there might be situations where (2) is the only option.
1.2 I'm not sure what you mean by "limit my ability to use the FW for all and any HD's". Do you want to use the drive to backup all your computers?
It is perfectly possible to clone a HD to a partition of an external FW drive. To do this, you can partition the FW drive in Disk Utility making sure that the partitions you plan to clone to are big enough, of course. Doing this will erase any data on the FW drive, however, so be sure to back it up. Some people also recommend writing zeros over the disk before proceeding. Again, Disk Utility has options to do this. When you partition, make sure that you choose the same type of file system as you're using on your macs.
I've never used Super Duper, but Carbon Copy Cloner will certainly let you create a bootable clone a HD on a partition of the FW drive. I use it for this purpose and have happily booted from the clones when necessary. If you consider CCC, be sure to read the documentation - especially "B4 U Clone" - so that you prepare the external drive correctly and take the steps you need to to ensure a successful cloning operation. For details see http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html. Note that the latest version is only for 10.4/10.5, but the earlier version is suitable for 10.2/10.3. I believe the latest version does a very good cloning job. The earlier version does not copy all the extended attributes etc. that you may care about. On the other hand, I have certainly restored successfully from clones made using the earlier version.
Super Duper has an excellent reputation and is supposed to copy extended attributes etc. nearly flawlessly. I can't speak from experience in this case, though, and I don't know how flexible it is in terms of allowing clones to partitions etc. as I've never used it.
    1.3 Sorry, can't answer this - I don't know what you're referring to.
1.4 Only that if Super Duper can't do what you want, CCC probably can. Whichever you use, be sure to read and follow the instructions and to test the clone by booting and working from it to assure yourself that it really is satisfactory.
    Good luck.

  • Editing Canon 5D to ProRes on an iMac and firewire 800 drive

The Canon 5D footage that has been sent through Compressor to ProRes will not play with any smoothness in FCP 6. I'm wondering if it's because of the Drobo firewire 800 drive? I'm working in a local company's setup and I'm thinking they should be using more than a firewire drive. This iMac is not capable of eSata connection or higher. Any ideas what other cause there could be for the footage playing slowly or freezing all together in the timeline? Thanks.
This is a 2.66 intel core duo iMac with 10.5.8 4GB Ram

When you say, "small portable raids", do you mean like a CalDigitVR or a G-Raid mini or G-Speed?
If you want a drive you can drag around with you, I can't recommend the Caldigit VR Mini highly enough. It is really solidly built and is powered from either the FW bus or an external supply. I used one recently to capture 14 hours of DVCProHD live over 2 days (direct feed from an HVX-200 to FCP on a MBP with the drive powered via firewire) without a hiccup. VERY impressive.
My only quibble with it is there is no independent power switch. When you plug it in (fw or external power), it starts up. Other than that, no issues. The Caldigit RAID software allows for a variety of configurations.

  • Backup Tape/Drive storage

Forever is a long time and no medium will meet that requirement.  Most financial data has to be stored for  < 10 years.  A lot of things change in 10 years, including tape drive technology.  You need to consider starting tape museum (keep functional tape drives and software including peripheral cables.)  You need to consider how you will validate the tapes are working and you are able to read data at set interval.  You may also consider AWS Glacier, technology developed to address your exact requirement.
Tapes are good for long storage but they the have to be stored properly, temperature and humidity levels are critical.  Consult recommended guidelines for the tape brand you purchase.

Hi, I am looking to get ideas on what you all might use to store your backup tapes and drives onsite or at a remote location. I don't have the option of using an Iron Mountain or 3rd party to do the storage so I have to store all of them and finance wants me to store them forever. So, I might have stacks and stacks of drives.
Any recommendations for cabinets or cases or ?
    Thanks!
