Exact sequence to backup, wipe then restore new iphone from backup?

Like a lot of people I'm hoping to switch from a 3g to a 3g s next friday. One thing I'm slightly confused about, due to a previous bad experience, is the whole backup and restore thing. A few months ago my iphone was replaced by apple as it was faulty. I did a restore from backup with the new iphone and somehow it got screwed up. None of my apps got transfered to the new phone, I had to install them manually and lost all my game saves.
Please can someone post the exact step by step sequence including wiping all data from the old iphone?
thanks in advance
Kev

For backup, see the iPhone Manual, page 139-140.
When you connect your new iPhone to iTunes, you will be given the option to "Set up as new phone" or "Restore from a backup" with a list of the available backups you can choose.
To erase your old iPhone, connect iPhone to your computer or a power adapter. Choose General > Reset and tap “Erase All Content and Settings.” This feature resets all settings to their defaults and removes all your information and media on your iPhone by overwriting the data stored on iPhone.

  • I backup up my iphone but didnt include password, and now want to restore new handset from backup and keep asking for password but has no idea what it is, pls help

Hi all, i backup up iphone in itunes but not realised it was password protected and now want to restore new handset from backup but keep asking me for password but no idea what it was,, pls help...

You are someone had to put a check in the box to encrypt your iPhone backup.
Warning: If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and then forget your password, you will not be able to restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable. If you forget the password you can continue to do backups and use the device, however you will not be able to restore the encrypted backup to any device without the password. You do not need to enter the password for your backup each time you back up or sync.
If you cannot remember the password and want to start again, you will have to do a full software restore and when prompted by iTunes to select the backup to restore from, choose Set up as a new device.

  • Restore New iPhone from back up - Music Download

I recently changed carries and restored the iPhone 6 I received from my most recent backup. After the restore was complete I noticed that only certain (very, very few) of my songs were downloaded back on to my phone. The others were listed but with the icon to download each individually from iCloud. My question is that while I am pretty certain there has to be a way to download in bulk all my songs from iCloud at once or at the very least download each artists albums instead of having to download each of the hundreds of songs I have individually, I just do not know where to this or how?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi nickh77tx,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you restored your iPhone from a backup and all of your music wasn’t restored. It sounds as though you restored from an iCloud backup. If this is the case, it can take some time for the restore to complete and download all of your music back to your iPhone. Please read over the attached article for further information.
If you need help restoring from an iCloud backup - Apple Support
Restoring my device from an iCloud backup is taking a long time
Restoring from a backup might take a while because of the size of the backup or the speed of the Wi-Fi network. For example, iCloud can take approximately 1 to 4 hours per gigabyte during a restore process.
There are several steps you can take:
In iOS 8 or later, check the progress of the transfer on your device under Settings > iCloud > Backup. In iOS 7, go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup. If the restore process is underway, the iCloud Backup setting is dimmed.
Make sure that your device is connected to the Internet with reliable Wi-Fi.
Make sure that your device is plugged in to a power outlet.
Check the Apple progress bar that appears while transferring a backup.
    Best regards,
    Joe

  • Restore iphone 5 to factory settings and then restore my data from backup

I have an iphone 5 running ios 7.0.6 which was installed over the air. I want to replace that over the air installation with a usb installed version. It appears that to do this I have to 'restore' my iphone back to factory condition which as I understand it will install the new ios, but also erase all of my data/apps/etc. If I make a backup of my phone prior to 'restoring' it, will I be able to then use my backup to restore all my stuff?
    Thanks!
    Bob

I have done the backup and restore several times to an iPad and an iPhone. I have never had a failure. Make certain your device is fully charged before you start.
I have done this to remove excessive "other" storage on the devices.

  • I am having an issue restoring an iPhone from backups.

I have a backup for the phone yesterday which is shown in the backups list (Edit > Preferences) however, when right clicking on the device in iTunes and selecting restore from back up it only gives me a backup from the 16th and one from today, yesterday's isn't shown. (See below screen shot).
I have tried restoring the phone and selecting that backup to restore from but it gives me an error that i need to set the phone up as a new phone, update it then restore from backup, which i've done but it brings me back to the original issue.

This is the error that I am presented with.

  • Restore new iPhone from cloud

I need to restore new replacement iPhone to cloud backup of damaged (previous) iPhone.  Backup was 3 days ago.  How do I do this?

  • Erase all content then restore new iPad from iCloud backup?

I'm selling my iPad 3 today and want to get the new iPad 5 as soon as it releases.  Before I sell my iPad 3 I'm going to backup the device and then erase all content and settings from the device.  Will this also delete my iPad backup from my iCloud account?  I plan on restoring my iPad 5 from my iPad 3 iCloud backup.  Will this work?  Thanks for any help!

  • Restoring new iPad2 from backup of old

Bought new iPad 2 and am restoring it to backup of old on iCloud.  It's taking 16+ hrs at this point and still not finished. What gives?

Were the missing photos in the camera roll on your iPad 2?  The backup only includes camera roll photos.
If they were, but were not restored from the backup, if you still have the iPad 2, import the missing photos to your computer (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083) then put them in a folder and sync them to your new iPad by selecting the folder on the Photos tab of your iTunes sync settings and syncing.  (The only downside of this approach is that the only way they can later be deleted from your iPad is to sync them off again using iTunes.  To get them in your camera roll you would need to use an app like PhotoSync to transfer them from your computer to the camera roll on your new iPad using you wifi.)

  • What happens if I restore my new iPhone from backup but keep the old phone on?

I currently have an iPhone 5 and have the 6+ on the way. I'm worried about the size of the 6+ so I'd like to test it out for the 14 day period. If I set up the 6 by restoring from iCloud backup can I still keep my 5 up and running. I wasn't planning on transferring my cell service over to the 6 yet and just running off wifi. Obviously iTunes is going to see both phones as being the same device so that would cause a problem but what if I left wifi sync and iCloud backup on the 6 off. Would this setup work? Thanks in advance.

What I mean is still track my stolen one. I don't know if this will make sense to you but I'm thinking that if I restore the back up data on this phone..on my stolen phone it will like forget the icloud account or something and think this phone is the stolen one so when I go to track the stolen one, it will show that phone as the one I have now because I restored the back up from that phone.

  • Suggestions before Restoring an iPhone from a backup.

I had my iPhone 4 replaced because of a problem with the home key ("known issue"). I was very well treated at the Apple Store.
I had made a backup of the iPhone prior to going to the Apple Store and was told to just "Restore from backup" when I got home and hooked it up (before doing anything else).
I went through the process and all of the folders, except one, disappeared and the apps were scattered about in a seemingly random manner. A small number of apps also did not make the trip. In speaking with Applecare, it was determined that this is the way things work at the present time, although there may be changes in the future.
    So, here are the suggestions.
Make a backup and then a duplicate copy of the backup. (User > Library > Application Support > MobileSync > Backup. It would not be a bad idea to do a time machine update which can run while you are off to the store to get a new iPhone.
Make some notes or take screen shots of things in iTunes so that you will know what folders you have and what is in them and so on because you wlll need it to organize things afterwards.
Make sure that you have all of the user names, passwords and so on available for web sites, Wi-Fi Networks and so on. Be familiar with the voicemail procedures for your carrier. These things did not "make the trip" from the backup when I did it.
I was told by Applecare that within the last few weeks the App Store and iTunes now have the capability to recover apps you have purchased which may not appear after performing the "Restore from Backup" so it is probably a good idea to make sure that you have the current version of iTunes installed.
When you are rearranging the apps on the phone after the "Restore from Backup" it is probably easier to do so within iTunes using your mouse as compared to doing it on the iPhone itself. You can then sync to the iPhone and get things back to where you want them.
I hope this helps if you need to perform a "Restore from Backup".
P.S. My iOS is actually 4.3.5.

Don't you just love changes in interfaces?
I found the answer to my question.
When you attach a device (iPhone, iPad) to your Mac, in iTunes 12 in appears as a tiny icon in the second "row" of the iTunes display. Click the icon and the familiar iTunes display for the device appears. From there, on the Summary screen, you can see the dates of the backups of the device (iCloud and backup to the computer). You can also use the button to backup to the computer.
