Exactly how to share files over three machines in our home

hi folks
I think my question is basic and I hope one of you can assist. We have an iBook G4, MBP 2009 edition, quadcore Mac..all running 10.5.7. I want to share files between them all. I have researched File Sharing on the computers but I can't figure out how to access each computer from the others. Any places to look online for exactly how to set up and then actually use File Sharing.
Is the software Dropbox the easiest way to go?
Thanks

Just to confirm, your router is square, not a UFO, right? If so, you need a USB 2 hard drive that doesn't spin down or go to sleep. People have complained about some Western Digital drives. I've been using a 1TB Lacie and a 1TB Seagate FreeAgent quite happily.
Attach the drive to your computer and run the Disk Utilities program in your Utilities fold. You may need to visit the partition tab of the program to make sure it is partitioned for a Mac (go ahead and partition it Mac GUID if it has been pre-formated for DOS). While it is connected to the Mac transfer the files you want to place on the drive (faster that way, especially if there are a lot of them). Then eject & disconnect the drive from the computer (turn it off too).
Connect the drive to your AEBS. If you are already sharing a printer with the base station you can connect a USB hub to the AEBS and then plug the printer and hard drive to the hub. After connecting the hard drive and turning it on, go back to the computer and run the AirPort Utility program to configure your 'Air Drive'.
After the Airport Utility program runs click on your base station and select the 'Manual Setup'. In the button bar you'll see a disk icon labeled Disks. Click on it. The disk connected to your airport should show up there. Select it and click on the 'File Sharing' tab. The 'enable file sharing' option should already be check marked - if it isn't select it. Select your security level - I use the default 'with Airport password' and remember password in keychain since I'm not worried about security in my house.
Click on Update and once the airport is showing green again, you should see your airport air drive in the 'sharing' tab of the Finder sidebar. The airdrive, I've found, is not reliable for using TimeMachine but for sharing files it is great. I even keep my music and movies on it for my notebook. Syncing my Touch via WiFi is a bit slower than connecting it to my desktop but the convenience more than makes up for it.

  • How to share files over Airport Extreme?

I have a G4 iMac connected to the Internet via an Airport Extreme. I also have an eMac in another room which can access the internet over the same Airport Extreme.
I have created a video file on the eMac but I need to burn it to DVD which means I need to get it to the iMac.
I know I should be able to send it over the network but each Mac can't seem to see the other, if you get my meaning. I have tried to switch on File Sharing and such like but I wonder if I am doing something wrong. Should there be an icon on the iMac desktop representing the eMac or something and vice versa? If that should be the case, I haven't got this.
If anyone can point me in the right direction to get File Sharing set up between my two Macs, I would be most grateful.
PS The eMac can access the internet just fine and use the iMac's Printer if it needs to.

Try these suggestions (copied from another discussion) which cover two alternative ways for getting file sharing between two Macs to work:
The first step is: on each computer, go into System Preferences, then Sharing, and turn on "Personal File Sharing". On that page, you'll see, at the top, the computer's name (which you can change), and at the bottom, the IP number (eg 10.0.1.2), which you may need as an alternative.
Then, on each computer, go to Finder, then click on Network. You may straightaway see the other computer appear - you can click on it, click "Connect", and then either log in as a user (it has to be a user that's been set up on that machine), or a guest.
As a guest, you can access all Public folders on the computer.
As a user, you can access that user's Home folder
As an admin user, you can access the whole hard drive.
So, if you have different user accounts set up on the computers, it's best to use Guest access and then put the files you're sharing in your user's Public folder.
Now, if that computer doesn't immediately appear, go to the Finder, click cmd-K (to open the Connect to Server dialogue), and type in
    afp://ip-address-of-other-computer
    eg afp://10.0.1.2
You'll then get the same login dialogue as above.

  • Unable to share files over the local network, OS X Lion

About two weeks ago, my coworker and I realized that we were no longer able to share files over the local network. We have not made any changes to our preference settings. We are able to access FileMaker Pro databases files located on another computer in our office via the network, but we are unable to access any other files by trying to login to the computer remotely. We also have internet access. I am able to login to each of our work computers form home, but not from the office. I'm am not sure what has changed, but it is important that we have the ability to share files at work. Can you give me directions on how to fix our problem. Thanks!

I had this problem when I first setup my Mac. One thing I know is that File Sharing in System Preferences doesn't necessarily need to be on, because iTunes does all of the networking itself.
I know that you've checked and checked again on the firewall, but what I did was turn the firewall on. In the list of ALLOW, there should be a line that is labeled iTunes Music Sharing. Check it. It was the magic link, and all of my iTunes libraries on the three computers in the house (two Windows, one my Mac) could "see" each other.
Turning on the firewall might seem strange, but it worked for me.
    I hope this helps.

  • How to transfer files from virtual machine to host machine

    Hello,
I want to know how to copy files from virtual machine o host machine while the virtual machine running. I can't share files from virtual machine because i am just studying for mcsa in company computer. I can't connect my virtual machine to same network so
i'm using a different ip range and i created a internal network switch for my virtual machines in hyper-v. Please give me a best solution for my studies.
    Regards,
    Ashane Deshapriya.

    Finally I got the solution...
Here is how you can share files between a Hyper-V host and any virtual machines running on that host.
If you've used Microsoft Virtual PC or Microsoft Virtual Server, you'll have enjoyed the fact that you can copy and paste between a virtual machine and those platforms. This doesn’t work with Hyper-V however—you can't copy/paste between a VM and the Hyper-V
    host.
The workaround is to do the following:
    1. On your Hyper-V host, create a shared folder and assign Change permission to Everyone.
    2. On the virtual machine running on the host, open the Network and Sharing Center and enable File and Printer Sharing.
    3. On the virtual machine, click Start and type \\host_name\share_name where host_name is the name of your Hyper-V host and share_name is the name of the share you created.
    4. Press ENTER and an Explorer window will open in the VM showing the contents of the shared folder on the host.
    5. You can now copy files from the VM to the host and vice versa as needed.
    Regards.

If you mean just moving files between a Mac and a PC with XP on it, get a USB flash drive, format it FAT32 (they usually come that way) and copy the files to that drive.

  • How to restore files from Time Machine after Clean Install of Mavericks

How to restore files from Time Machine after Clean Install of Mavericks. I know the data is there but seems unaccessable because I may have changed the Computer or Owner name. Is there any way to fix that now?

    Hi Linc,
my back-up data is managed by Time Machine; the actual data is on a second internal Hard Drive with a capacity of 1TB - not partitioned. I am using Time Machine and have access to all data backed up since Mavericks Clean Install but not the data prior to this date.
When I open the 1TB drive in Finder I can see a folder "Backups.backupdb/Sigi's Mac Pro/ followed by many folders of backup dates going back to 2010-09-20-103441 and up to 2014-02-07-142414 all followed with folder Macintosh HD.  February 7th  2014 was the date of the clean install.
These Backups are followed by backup date folder 2014-02-08-075554 with a subfolder of MacPro-320GB (this is the name I assigned to my Boot Drive during formatting; I suspect I should have assigned the same name as before ie. Macintosh HD) and 2014-02-11 with a subfolder Macintosh HD, these are the ones I get access to by way of Time Machine > Restore.
Weird thing is on Febr 11 when I relised my possible mistake and renamed the Bootdrive back to what it was initially ie. Macintosh HD despite this I have access to all backup data since the Clean Install in both folders MacPro-320GB as well as Macintosh HD but not to any data prior to the Clean Install.
Is there something that Time Machine knows and prevents access or is it simply a matter of renaming the subfolder 2014-02-08-07554/MacPro-320GB to ........./Macintosh HD?
I like to restore selectively and not everything - It was hard work reinstalling apps that were supposed to be the troublemakers (ref my discussion on Maverick problems) but I now need to get onto data specific to some of these apps as well as other data I may have missed. Long story? Yes and sorry.

unless you're sharing very large files, speed will be more or less the same using any of the above connections.
this support article may prove useful: Mac 101: File sharing.
you can also use firewire Target Disk Mode.

  • I recently set up multiple accounts and when I was trying to figure out how to share files I messed up something in my documents. Everytime I open a doc from the ADMIN account, a box pops up that says "The file is not in the correct format" how to fix?

I recently set up multiple accounts on my imac, When I was trying to figure out how to share the documents I must have done something wrong. When logged into the Admin account, I open up any document and I get a message box that says, "The Document could not be opened. The file isn't in the correct format. The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format." What did I do and how do I fix it?

Without knowing what you did it is impossible to give advice on how to correct it.
If these were files you copied over from some other system then just Re-Copy them replacing the ones that are corrupted.
Other then that I suggest you Wipe the drive and start over with a clean reinstall of the OS and programs. Then if you want to share files to All Accounts place those files in a folder in the ROOT of the drive.

  • How to share files on 2nd drive in Mac Mini, not 1st

I am totally new to Apple's Server software so I may have some very obvious questions.
I just bought the latest Mac Mini server and want my team to all share files on the second 500GB hard drive. When a user connects to the server (from the side menu under "Shared") they see "Groups" "Public" and "Users" - and these 3 directories are on the primary drive in the Mac Mini.
I'd like to just have all the media files they're creating to be stored on the 2nd 500GB drive.
Can anyone tell me how to set this up?
    Thanks for the help!
    Brian,.

    Hello Brian -
I'm relatively new to Snow Leopard Server, but these forums have been a great great help so I am keen to help others when I can!
This is relatively straightforward to do.
    1) Make a directory on the second drive (This can be done using the Sharing Pane of Server Admin if you wish, or through SSH / Screen Sharing) - call it Data or something similar.
    2) In Server Admin make a share for your new folder. I'd suggest making it automount and fill in the options accordingly.
    3) Check the permissions are correct and amend if necessary - again through Server Admin
    Done
Your users will now be able to connect to the server with their logon credentials and see the new share, which of course is stored on the second drive.
Make sure you've got backups configured somehow (Time Machine maybe?)
    Hope this helps.

  • HT4783 I'm trying to learn how to use Airdrop between my wife's Mac and mine. We both have it, but this article did not help us learn HOW to share files.  Yippeee that we can...but HOW?

My wife and I are trying to learn how to use Air Drop.  The "tutorial" showed us where it is.  It came up.  I saw hers (Mac).  She saw mine (Mac). But where to go after that is, apparently, in the cloud somewhere.  The description says we can share files...which is nice...but nothing tells us HOW to share those files.
Thanks for your help out there...
    Dennis

    1. Open a new Finder window or use one that's already open
    2. Click on Airdrop, press Shift+Command+R, or find "Airdrop" in the "Go" menu
    3. Drag your file to the icon of the person you want to send the file to (if you have mountain lion, you can use the share button).
    4. The other person has to click "save"
    5. The file will send and appear in the receiver's downloads folder
In Mountain Lion, a new feature was added: the share button. It's a button with a picture of a box and an arrow jumping out of it. Click on it and the third (and last) option is "Airdrop" and clicking on it will allow you to send files over Airdrop without opening it in Finder.

  • How to share files Creative Cloud Team

Hi I have purchased and installed 2 team seats... on one computer (Imac)  I can see a Creative Cloud (Folder) on the other (PC with Windows 7) I cannot see a files folder or access files from the CC Desktop .. How do we share files or folders?

If you take a look at the table under the aforementioned link, you will notice that there is a difference when attempting to connect from a Mac OS 8.6 computer to a Mac OS X 10.4 and a Mac OS X 10.9 computer. So, an unaltered 10.9 does not appear to work with normal file sharing. You should still be able to install NetPresenz on the old computer, and then use an FTP client from the modern machine to upload (push) the files.
Another solution, if you have a number of PDF files to transfer on only a few occasions, could possibly be to produce a CD-R in an appropriate format (on a modern Mac or PC with a CD burner), and then read that disc at the Power Macintosh 6500. Alternatively, if both computers can access the Internet, you could carry out the transfers as email attachments or via a "cloud drive".

  • Adobe Creative Cloud - How To Share Files With Clients and Colleagues | Creative Suite Podcast: Designers | Adobe TV

In this episode of the Adobe Creative Suite Podcast, Terry White shows how to share Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign Files with clients and colleagues and all they'll need is a browser to comment and see your Photoshop Layers.
    http://adobe.ly/10ZjpE4

    Terry,
I guess I miss something. How can I share a folder of photos? When I return from a shoot, I select 20 of the pictures and need to share them with my client to pick up the favorites. Am I supposed to copy and past an URL for each image separately?
Sometimes I also work with a colleague, I need to share my favorites with him. Same issue.
We have tried Adobe Cloud, and then went for Dropbox. There we can share a folder and he can put even his pictures in it as well. That's what I call collaboration. And it is free (unlike Adobe Cloud). If you have some word in Adobe, please tell them to either drop it and make a deal with services like Dropbox, or make it properly.
    Thanks.

    Hello,
Hi, i would like to know how to read text file from remote machine using java source code, any code ?
    Thanks very much;

On the server, perform the following steps:
Parse the request and determine the file to serve
Open a FileInputStream to the appropriate file
Obtain a reference to the Servlet OutputStream
Pipe the bytes from the file to the output stream
Flush and close the streamYou might want to call HttpServletResponse.setContentType("application/octet") to indicate to the browser that a file download will be occurring. Do so before getting the reference to the Servlet's OutputStream.
