Exactly What Does a 'Restore' Do to my Ipod?

Having the same 7.7 itunes problems as others, that is I cannot sync my ipod on my new laptop (windows/vista). However, my desktop (windows/xp)runs an older version of itunes w/zero problems.
I understand if I do a restore on my ipod it wipes all music off of it (I've got my library backed up in two places) but what else does it do to the ipod? Does it reset everything as if I just took it new out of the box? If so, I'm wondering if I do this and connect it to my desktop if it will work and sync and all. This is scarey -- if I restore and am completely unable to sync from either my desktop or my laptop, I'm w/out everything until Apple comes up w/a fix. What if that never happens or they can't fix it?

I understand if I do a restore on my ipod it wipes all music off of it (
Correct; it wipes everything including the OS.
Does it reset everything as if I just took it new out of the box?
Yes, exactly.
If so, I'm wondering if I do this and connect it to my desktop if it will work and sync and all.
Difficult to say, but if you've followed all the other possibility for getting your system to sync with your iPod as in your other thread and nothing works, resetting your iPod and then if that doesn't help restoring it may be the only options left to try.
If it's working with XP and iTunes 7.6, you could try uninstalling iTunes 7.7 on the laptop and reinstalling 7.6. If you don't still have the installer, you can try searching the web for something like "iTunes 7.6 download". But you may find that the library has been upgraded and won't work with 7.6 and so will need to be recreated. That wouldn't lose your content, but would lose playlists, ratings and such. Vista is a bit less straightforward when it comes to security, though, so it's possible that the problem stem from something in Vista, not with iTunes 7.7 per se and so might come happen with 7.6 as well. Not having run into the problem myself, I just can't say with any certainty.
If none of the steps short of restoring your iPod or reinstalling iTunes 7.6 work and you have an Apple Store near you, you might see if you can book an appointment to take in your laptop and iPod and see if they can help you sort it out.

  • Exactly what does the Data Drop-down List do?

What does the Data Drop-down List do? Is it used to make a drop-down list from certain records in a column in a table of a data base?

Yes, this is exactly what it does. However, it's a custom control, not a built-in control. JavaScript is used to set it up. In order to use it you have to have a data connection in the document and modify the "Initialize" script, which is were the list is populated from the DB. The "Initialize" code is a good example of how to use XFA JavaScript to access a DB. However, the code is also written in a very general manor and takes the long way around to hooking up to the DB. Much shorter code can be written for a specific DB.

  • Exactly, what does R3TR DEVC means ?

I need to know exactly what means the entry R3TR DEVC within a transport request.
The point is: R3TR DEVC  means
    1. Development package definition data only
    2. Development package and ALL the objects contained in this development package
I investigate through SE80 and there appear 2 options when right clicking on the root of the development class and selecting "write transport entry":
    - package
    - all objects
I created a transport request selecting first option and the entry created was R3TR DEVC
I also created a transport request selecting second option and it created an entry R3TR DEVC  and a lot of entries (one for each object contained in the package)
This test did not clarify the point to me. I am not completly sure the first transport request (with the entry DEVC alone) will not transport objects even if them are not explicitly enumerated.
In order to do a more complete test I guess I would create a new package and some objects in it (new objects not transported yet to any other system). After this I could create a transport request like the "first one" with only an entry DEVC, transport to another system and observe the result. I do not want to do such test if it is possible to obtain an answer from the forum.
    Thanks in advance.

    1. Just the dev class with no objects.  This obj added to transport when u first create declass.

It seems that it would be obvious, except this option is '''''always''''' greyed out.

Last weekend the broadband (superfast fibre) failed , nothing , just the modem going through the different sequences constantly without recconecting , I got through BT who after an exhaustive series of tests announce a "big" fault on the main line . I was told that engineers would be on the case next day and they would call me to check confirm it was sorted by 4.30 pm , no call came and although the broadband had come back on ,it was very inconsistant jumping wildly from between 1 or 2 mb to about 18mb (thats less than half of what I had been gettin for the 2-1/2 months) I called again and was told it was sorted ,and an engineer was appointed to visit next morning ,after being read line and verse  regarding me footing the bill if the problem was on my premisis . anyway ,the engineer came and after many checks he could find no line faults but did mention the router seemed a bit suspect , he explained that the line would be automatically capped to half speed after a fault was detected and said he would arrange (request) a reset.
next morning ,off it goes again ,nothing for two hours and ,  after trying everything I switched the two ethernet cables to different ports ,and it was up and running again , though still at half speed , contacted BT again and they did another series of checks , again they said there was a major fault on the line ,and an engineer was booked again for a home visit .
this time the engineer while running a line test noticed the router was on a solid blue light dispite being disconnected fron the line ,and decided to fit a new one ,problem solved , fired up right away ,internet was much more responsive ,but the line was steady but half speed at 18.75 ish mb .he said (again) he would put down on the "job" that it required a reset and told me he would also request it personally as soon as he got back .  3 days later no sign of the reset and its constantly in the 18-19mb range , before for the entire 2 and a half months it worked it was a solid 37+mb  never once saw it go below 37mb and I do regular speed checks ,about 1 per week .
can anyone here advise ,how to get it reset , anyone at bt seems uninterested ,do I need to stop my direct debit payment before they respond ???

I bow to your expertize ,but the wireless has allways been competely disabled since i first had broadband and during the 2 and a half months I have been on infinity with absolutely no instability and as i mentioned before a rock solid 37mb line , no dropouts, no line variation , no disconnects, (peak or offpeak) until last saturday when the broadband went off ,since then its been a nightmare , 1 minute there is a problem on the main line ,then there is not , everyone from BT I spoke to gave a different story , there are no wifi devices anywhere near my home or in it , both  2.4 and 5ghz and bt-wifi(fon) have allway been disabled in my home .
but to give BT the benifit of the doubt ,I will give them 10 days , before withdrawing my custom .
    thanks for the advice .

  • Exactly What Does Time Machine Back Up?

I have four mounted volumes on my desktop. One is the vanilla MacintoshHD system volume. Two are external hard drives with lots of photo image files. And one is my Time Machine destination volume.
Am I correct that Time Machine will back up all of the mounted volumes except the destination volume and any other specific exclusions that were specified in Time Machine setup?
    Thanks.

It backs up everything on Mac-formatted local volumes except the backup volumes themselves and what ever else is excluded in the Time Machine preference pane. External drives (except Thunderbolt drives) are automatically added to the exclusion list, so you have to remove them if you want them to be backed up. Cache and log files are always excluded.

  • What does the restore settings do?, what does the restore settings do?

  • Exactly what does "Remove Disk" in Time Machine do?

I am concerned that my current TM disk is having issues. I would like to use another drive to make a TM backup but I am not ready to toss the relationshop the current disc has with my system.
Will "Remove Disk" temporarily dis-able the current TM drive as a TM drive?
Or are the implications of "Remove Disk" far more far-reaching than that?
    thank you,

  • How long time does a restore of a 30GB ipod actually takes?

My ipod is only 11 days old.
I received several of those corrupted file messages for 2 days, so I decided to restore the ipod unit last night.
Now it has been in the process in 12+ hours.(!!)
When I try to close the "ipod restore" program (version 2006-01-10), it says that it cant be interrupted when its restoring (which is a great feature!), but how long should I actually wait for it to finish?
It says that the application will be closed when its finished.
It should come up with the "name your ipod" WHEN its finished, but it doesnt?
It is still connected, I can see the ipod as a removeable disk, but nothing happens..
What will happen if I try open iTunes at this stage?
    Any suggestions?
    Please help.
    Thanks!!

    continuing my story...
I terminated the restore process, it wasnt responding obviously, then unplugged the ipod the hard way.
It did wake up, showed the wall plug icon, then showed the appleicen up, then the screen lighted up and it asked me to choose a language, I didnt manage to pick one before another screen showed up and it needed power( it has been connected to a powersource/the computer for the last 20 hours!!???), and now its charging...
It still shows up as a removable drive, I can click on it and see that there's 4 folders in there (calendar, contacts, ipodcontrol and notes) so, the restore worked, even though it never ended, and it is fully wiped clean. 27.8 GB to fill soon. (hopefully)
Tomorrow I will unmount it and see what happens. I still need to pick a userlanguage, and then I will plug it in again, and see if it shows up in iTunes (it DOESNT today!)

  • What does the new update for the ipod do?

I keep looking. I have an Ipod from 2003 20gb. Iv'e never updated the software so I found the updates but I cant find anywhere that states what the updates do for my Ipod Im tired of looking. Please help!

    Hi Jeff,
I also have an old 20GB i-Pod and I too wanted to know what was in the new version, but like you I couldn't find a list of features or bug fixes or whatever.
I was happy with the i-Pod and I believe in the old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", however, I also heard that the new i-Pods have on-the-go playlists, which is a feature I would really like. So, long story short, I used the new updater, the i-Pod now runs ver1.5 but there is no on-the-go feature. I'm guessing it's not supported for my old Hardware. As a compensation, though, I swear it sounds a bit better than before - dunno if there is a new decoder algorithm in the update. Haven't really answered your question, I just want to warn you that if you want to update for a particular feature, it might not be there. Apple really should publish a feature list for all versions. Good luck Jeff.

  • What does the iphone have that the ipod touch doesn't?

i was just wondering what the iphone has that the ipod touch doesn't if there is anything. (Apart from the obvious phone and maybe the camera)

The ipod touch has most of the same functions as the iphone with the exception of the phone, the camera, and the gps (and any features that require those functions). My wife uses one as an ipod, a very nice device, especially if you are normally in range of a wifi network.

  • What does the lock icon on the iPod Touch in the upper right corner mean?

Wbat does the lock icon in the upper right corner of the iPod Touch mean?
    How is it used?

That means your iPod is locked, or will not rotate the screen when you rotate your iDevice. To turn it off, you double-tap the home button, swipe to the right and you'll see the same icon, but bigger. Tap that.
    That's all! Simple as 123!

  • Disk Utility: What does "scan image for restore" do?

Before restoring a disk image, I know that I need to use Disk Utility's "Scan Image for Restore…" feature.
Exactly what does this feature do?

    I asked because I didn't know.
I was helping someone upgrade his PowerMac G5 from the original 80GB hard drive to a 1TB drive.
Since the G5 can accommodate two internal drives, I could have simply added the new drive and used Disk Utility's "restore" feature to migrate his data directly from the old drive to the new drive.
But it was more convenient for me to work at home so I removed the old drive, and brought it home along with the new drive.
I couldn't connect both drives to my MacBook Pro, since I only have one SATA drive dock. So I did it like this:
    1. Connected the old drive to my SATA dock.
    2. Create a disk image from his old drive, saving it to an external USB drive.
    3. Disconnected the old drive from the SATA dock and connected the new one.
    4. Restore the disk image to the new drive
Of course, when I tried step 4, I got an error message about needing to do a scan first. That's what led me to this question.
I have a follow-up question: When I created the image, I didn't bother changing the default image format, which is "compressed." If I had given the matter a little thought, I could have created a read-only image, since I would never need to change the image.
If I had used read-only, would Disk Utility have created the checksums on-the-fly when it created the disk image?

  • What does "Rif.:" mean?

In the last few days, I've started seeing some messages where the subject line has "Rif.:"  Like this one. Basically, it looks like the Re: for reply, but I had never seen it before.  Exactly what does it mean?  I know some of the foreign language posters will have other things pop up there when they reply.  Such as some Chinese characters.  Then you get a long string of Re: (chinese)  Re:  (chinese)  Re: ..... as the chinese person replies back and forth with an English speaker.  (It gets kind of annoying to see the subject line filled up and you occasionally have to strip out the excess if you jump in with a reply.)
It would be nice if the forums recognize the different Re: designators and don't append them back and forth on to each other.  Or just uses Re: no matter what the language is of the poster since all the boards are all actually posted on an English language website.
One other question, why do some people have replies that add a space after the Re and before the colon so "Re ::?

Some replies will come via the linked newsgroup and the forum will have little control. I don't think the forum should edit titles.

If I import a song and use "Get Info", under "Summary" there is a "Volume" setting at the bottom of the column on the left side that is different for every song. Exactly what does that number mean. Thank you so much.

Has to do with Soundcheck trying to normalize volume level between tracks.
