Exceeding ISE license counts - performance consequences?

Hello,
I have a customer that is running a 2-node ISE deployment and is licensed for 250 Base and 250 Adv. users.
We have moved the wired users over in one of their offices into Monitor Mode only, and the Base/Adv. Active license counts have exceeded both these values.
Long-term, what is the operational impact?
I understand from Chapter 7 of the ISE User Guide that "To avoid service disruption, Cisco ISE continues to provide services to endpoints that exceed license entitlement. Cisco ISE instead relies on RADIUS accounting functions to track concurrent endpoints on the network and generate alarms when endpoint counts exceed the licensed amounts"
My question is, that aside from a scenario where TAC is engaged and they see the license count exceeded, what is the operational and functional impact of exceeding the license count.  I know that ISE continues to process autthentications, because the 251st client is not refused access.
I've read the Order Guide and the User Guide and the Hardware Guide, and no actual impact is mentioned.
thanks in advance,
Andrew

I had a similar question. I asked how does ISE calculate users. In the wlc I would see 10k radius clients but ISE would show half that number. This is what I was told:
Unfortunately there is no documentation on it. The active endpoints are calculated from the active sessions seen on the primary monitoring node session database, meaning active client sessions seen by PSNs and reported to the primary monitoring node. As to the rules that qualify an endpoint as active, there isn?t really even any internal documentation on that. The effective behavior seen indicates that this is calculated by endpoints who authenticate and continue to re-authenticate/periodically trigger accounting updates from NADs. Hopefully this helps!

  • Cisco ISE license count

    Hello,
I noticed a weird issue on my ISE deployment. The Active Endpoints and Active Guests Counters on the ISE home page adds to a total of 105 users but when i check my license counter. I see 234 base licenses used and 221 advanced licenses used. Please what could be the problem or what am i missing?

  • Can I exceed the license count on a 5508 series WLAN controller?

    Scenario:
5508 WLC licensed for 100 APs.
Currently have 78 APs on the controller.
Two buildings coming online this week, but there was a snafu with purchasing and license upgrade still in progress. 92 APs total between them.
I looked at the license on the WLC, and in there it has something listed for 500, but unused, or something like that, along with my 100 AP license in use.
I have never tried this, which is why I'm asking.  What happens if I power up all those new access points?  Will they join the WLC and run for 90 days or something to that effect?  What is that 500 AP license?  A demo?
    Thanks in advance.

You are talking about the onboard factory evaluation licenses. You can put these in 'high' and resolve your deficiency while you get your perm licenses.
    See below ..
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/7-4/configuration/guides/consolidated/b_cg74_CONSOLIDATED/b_cg74_CONSOLIDATED_chapter_011.html#d99529e920a1635
    Activating an AP-Count Evaluation License
Information About Activating an AP-Count Evaluation License
If you are considering upgrading to a license with a higher access point count, you can try an evaluation license before upgrading to a permanent version of the license. For example, if you are using a permanent license with a 50-access-point count and want to try an evaluation license with a 100-access-point count, you can try out the evaluation license for 60 days.
AP-count evaluation licenses are set to low priority by default so that the controller uses the ap-count permanent license. If you want to try an evaluation license with an increased access point count, you must change its priority to high. If you no longer want to have this higher capacity, you can lower the priority of the ap-count evaluation license, which forces the controller to use the permanent license.
    Note
To prevent disruptions in operation, the controller does not switch licenses when an evaluation license expires. You must reboot the controller in order to return to a permanent license. Following a reboot, the controller defaults to the same feature set level as the expired evaluation license. If no permanent license at the same feature set level is installed, the controller uses a permanent license at another level or an unexpired evaluation license.

  • ISE license enforcement alarms

Getting the following alarm from my ISE:
    Cause:
    Base License Enforcement
    Details:
Base concurrent users exceed license allowable count
Currently only using 1656 out of 2000 base licenses so I'm not sure what the issue is. Running 1.1.2.145 patch 3.

    Hello Tom,
As I am unclear about your issue , to make it more clear can you tell me the exact base licenses  that you have purchased for your endpoints.
can you send me the BOM regarding  ISE licenses  that you have purchased.

  • Basic ISE Licensing question

    Hi,
Just a question on ISE license consumption.
If a user logs in and gets authenticated (user authentication) via ISE on a device that is already authenticated (device authentication), does it consume 2 licenses, one for the device and one for the user?
This is nowhere clearly told in any cisco documentation.
Can anybody help me clarify this?
    Thank you,
    Mohan

The base package includes all of the base services required to enable 802.1X, Guest, and Monitoring and Troubleshooting. The advanced package includes Posture, Profiler, and Security Group Access services.
Cisco ISE is bundled with a licensing mechanism that has the following important features:
•Built-in License—Cisco ISE comes with a built-in evaluation license, which is valid for 90 days. The evaluation license includes both base and advanced packages and limits the number of endpoints to 100 for both the base and advanced packages. Therefore, it is not required to install a regular license immediately upon installation.
•Central Management—Licenses are centrally managed by the ISE administration node. In a distributed deployment, where two ISE nodes assume the Administration persona (primary and secondary), upon successful installation of the license file, the licensing information from the primary Administration node is propagated to the secondary Administration node. So there is no need to install the same license on each Administration node within the deployment.
•Concurrent Endpoint Count—The Cisco ISE license includes a count value for base and advanced packages, which restricts the number of endpoints that use those services. The count value is the number of endpoints across the entire deployment that are concurrently connected to the network and accessing the service.
Concurrent endpoints represent the total number of supported users and devices. An endpoint can be any combination of users, personal computers, laptops, IP phones, smart phones, gaming consoles, printers, fax machines, or other types of network devices.
IMPORTANT : - Alarm is generated when the soft limit of endpoints is crossed and there is no functional impact on the users. To avoid service disruption, Cisco ISE continues to provide services to endpoints that exceed license entitlement. However there are plans to implement a hard limit on this soon.

  • How to do a Portal License count?

    Hi All
We are currently running Portal 7.00 SP13 and it is that time of year where we have to perform our license count. In our ECC6 system we can just going into SU01 and get the information here, however I am not sure if this is the same process in the portal!
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks
    Phil

    Hi Phil,
I guess the Portal licences are free with the enterprise suite unless ofcourse you have ESS/MSS for which the count is defined in the SU01 ( licence tab, there is a different licence type for ESS users) in R3.

  • ISE Licensing for IP Phones nodes

    Hi Guys,
I'm currently worknig on an ISE design for a network where they have IP Phones for each end user device:
Switch <--> IP Phone <--> End User Device.
My concern is the licensing part; i'm not really interested in authenticating or profiling IP Phone nodes. rather i need only to provide full ISE services for End user devices behind IP Phones (Authenitcation,Authorizatino,Posturing....etc.). so i need to order a base and an advanced license that cover ONLY the number of end user devices without accounting for IP Phone units.
Considering the above requirements ; what is the best deployment scenario to consider when configuring the switch interface that connect to each IP Phone with Single host port authentication (cdp bypass). would the ip phone consume from license count.
What if we considered doing MAB for IP Phone nides and Dot1x for End users and considering MDA ? would it consume 2 units from total license number of nodes in this case ?
What is the best practice for deploying and licensing ISE if i Cisco or a Third Party IP Telephony solution and i don't want to autheticate/authorize/profile ip phones ?
    Thanks,
    Muayad Jallad,

If you are using Cisco IP phones you can get away with single-host mode on the port which in effect ignores the phone. If the phone is a third party device you will most likely need to use multi-domain authentication and actually use ISE to allow the phone on the network.
In summary - CIsco phone means potentially no license, if Avaya or other third party you will need to auth and use a license

  • ASR1001-X, Bandwidth is exceeding the license level.

    Dears,
I need to double check with you regarding the below log message:

Does this means that i am having high throughput that exceeds my license 20G or what?

  • SCOM 2012 - Event ID 6024 (Launching Restart Health Service. Health Service exceeded Process\Handle Count or Private Bytes threshhold.)

I am getting event ID 6024 (LaunchRestartHealthService.js : Launching Restart Health Service. Health Service exceeded Process\Handle Count or Private Bytes threshhold.) within an interval ranging from 12-17 minutes.
    I am using SCOM (2012 SP1 and 2012 R2) on Windows Server (2008 R2 / 2012 / 2012 R2).
This issue is occurring only on agent managed computer (acting as proxy and discover managed objects on other computers setting is enabled) which i am using for monitoring my device. All discovery scripts (powershell) and monitors are targeted on this agent
    managed computer.
There are total 80 discoveries and 900 monitors. 55 discoveries and 550 monitors are enabled by default and rest all are disabled.
I am seeing event id 6024 frequently only on agent managed computer. Can anyone help me to resolve this issue.
    Thanks,
    Mukul

To fix issue 6024, you can follow below steps:
    1. Open SCOM console. Go to Monitors -> Agent -> Entity Health -> Performance -> Health Service Performance -> Health Service State.
    2. Double click Health Service Handle Count Threshold monitor and go to Overrides page.
    3. Click Override -> For a specific object of Class: Agent. Select the affected SCOM agent QMXServer.
    4. Check on the parameter Agent Performance Monitor Type - Threshold. Change the default value 2000 to an appropriate value, like 4000. You can check the Health service handle count alert in SCOM console to get the value when the alert is generated. You
can also launch the health explorer against QMXServer to check the value when the monitor state is changed from healthy to critical.

  • Cisco ISE licensing...

    Hi,
seeking help to reduce our ISE licensing cost, actually we are out budget and we planning to order ISE licenses less than what we required, and looking for efficiently using the same, is there any way, i mean if we reduce "user idle timeout" is it reduce our license consumption?
    any kind help appreciated...
    thank you,

    License Count
A Cisco ISE user consumes a license during an active session. Once the sessions has ended, ISE releases the license for reuse by another user.
The Cisco ISE license is counted as follows:
A Base, Plus, or Advanced license is consumed based on the feature that is used.
An endpoint with multiple network connections can consume more than one license per MAC address. For example, a laptop connected to wired and also to wireless at the same time. Licenses for VPN connections are based on the IP address.
Licenses are counted against concurrent, active sessions. An active session is one for which a RADIUS Accounting Start is received but RADIUS Accounting Stop has not yet been received.

  • What is license count of installing or use O365 Pro plus software per user for Bussiness

    Hi  All,
Today in our office given demo of Office 365 usages and license details , but i am little bit confused on licensing.
They told we can use Office 365 Pro Plus software into 15 Device ( 5 Windows PC + 5 MAC + 5 Mobile or Tablets).
I refereed this below link as well
    http://products.office.com/en-us/business/office-365-proplus-business-software
[Enjoy a consistent and familiar Office experience across PCs, Macs, Windows tablets, iPads®, and most mobile devices.
Each user can install Office on 5 PCs or Macs, 5 Windows tablets or iPads, and 5 phones.]
Is anyone confirm this is true,  is  Microsoft increased the license count of 5 (it could be any devices, at max we can use my O365 ID 5 times to install and activate) to 15.
    and this from FAQ session:
What is Office 365 Pro Plus?
Office 365 ProPlus is one of the subscription service plans in the new Office. It is productivity software (including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher, Access, and Lync) that is installed on your desktop or laptop computer. Office 365
ProPlus is a user-based service that allows people to access Office experiences on up to 5 PCs or Macs and on their mobile devices. Traditional Office installations were tied to the computers they were installed on. Office 365 ProPlus enables flexible new
deployment options that IT and/or individual users can choose from to install Office.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Based on my knowledge, it's not 5 Windows PC + 5 MAC but 5 Windows PC or 5 MAC. To confirm the information, you can contact the customer service:

  • ISE license for TrustSec

    Hello,
I want to know  does ISE with Plus-License support  TrustSec features ?     On the TrustSec 5.0 document, it is mentioned that you must have ISE Advance-License for TrustSec support. but  on other-hand on ISE Licensing-datasheet it is written Plus-License (Provides context about endpoints for more detailed access policies).   as per bellow table:
    ISE License Package
    Focus
    Perpetual/Subscription (Terms Available)
    Notes
    Base
    Secured access
    Perpetual
    Plus
Provides context about endpoints for more detailed access policies
    Subscription (1, 3, or 5 years)
Does not include Base services; Base licenses are required to install Plus licenses.
    Advanced
Provides context and compliance details about endpoints for more detailed access policies
    Subscription (1, 3, or 5 years)
Does not include Base services; Base licenses are required to install Advanced licenses
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/security/identity-services-engine/datasheet-c78-730772.html
Please let me know should I order Advanced or Plus License?      if Plus has this capability will be good for me because of its License pricing
    Thanks,

At the beginning, there were only the Base- and Advanced licenses. There you needed Advanced for nearly everything that goes beyond basic Authentication and Authorization. In newer versions (starting 1.2.1 and one of ne newer 1.2.0 patch-levels), the plus license was introduced. And many Advanced-features were moved to Plus. As you will probably directly start with a newer version where the new licenses are used, you'll be fine with "Plus".

    WLC 5508 (7.4.100.0)
The problem is that Prime 1.3 incorrectly displays MSE wIPS Monitor Mode APs license count.
I have 20 monitor mode LAPs, but Prime displays only one LAP under MSE wIPS Monitor Mode APs count. In addition this one LAP is not in monitor mode.
The wIPS Monitor Mode APs license (AIR-WIPS-AP-25) is permanent.
At first MSE had been shipped with 7.2.110 with preinstalled wIPS license and then was uprgaded to 7.4.100.
    MSE and WLC are synced.
I tried to change the modes for these LAPs from monitor to local and backwards, but had no luck.
    Has anyine faced this problem?

    Thank you, Scott!
This is really, confusing, because there is no exact information about it in documentation.
In conclusion (correct me, if I am wrong):
MSE 7.4 supports the old AIR-WIPS-AP-25 license, but doesn't display it in proper way. This situation is normal and it should be so.

  • Database size would exceed your licensed limit of 10240 MB per database in ms sql 2008 r2 standard editon

    Hello there,
Pl. provide solution on this on urgent if possible
REATE DATABASE or ALTER DATABASE failed because the resulting cumulative database size would exceed your licensed limit of 10240 MB per database.
I have installed MS SQL 2008 R2 Standard Edition
Error getting while restoring sql db 11gb backup file

    Hi,
Please post output of  query provided by Olaf. I guess you have connected to Express edition( 2008 r2/2012/2014) and since database has limitation of 10 G hence you got this message. Please double check

  • UC560 - license counts and end-of-sale for license upgrades?

One of our customers would like to keep their UC560 system in production for awhile, but we may need to add licenses.
First, with the UC560 now past end-of-sale, how long will we be able to buy license upgrades?  I could not find any information when I tried searching. It looks like the distributors are still selling L-UC-PRO-8U=.
Second, how does Cisco count the UC560 licenses?  (I'm sure I knew this when I went through the training courses.)  Here is their current license summary:
    #show platform software license
    License UDI                  : UC560-FXO-K9:...
    Maximum User Licenses        : 40
    Used User Licenses           : 24
    Available User Licenses      : 16
    Base License                 : 24
    CSL Base License             : 16
Max number of upgrade PAK allowed: 13
In one post, I read that the license count was based on the number of ephones. Based on this report, it looks like only registered ephones are being counted. It doesn't look like floating extensions or extension mobility user profiles count against the "Used User Licenses" total.  Does that sound right?
    Thanks!  -dpm

Adobe doesn't care, they don't have to. I like Phsotoshop and have been using it professionally for 20 years, but lets face it, I wouldnt mind some really good competition from another source. It didnt use to be the only game in town, and doesnt have to remain so.
I could brainstorm how I would want competing software to look like. Pshop is not the easiest workflow possible. Illustrator is clearly deficient to even CorelDraw, and certainly Freehand. I've been meaning to reconnect with CorelDraw. It did some cool things.
Google Chrome is pulling a lot of manoevers software wise and I hope they try to go a little deeper and give Adobe a run for their money on the one program they feel justifies unbelievable gouging. Go investigate Ableton Live if you want to see what a company that cares about its customers is doing, ADOBE. Audition is a JOKE compared to Ableton Live. Thank God we're not powned on the audio side by these suits.
The idea that a company would peddle buggy software, which CS4 was..., although some of that was Apple's fault, is bad, the upgrade prices were ridiculous, and this is the end of the road for me currently. The idea that a company would actively
push away customers is pretty incredible. "But I sent you an email!" Whoops, you gotta pay $1900 for production premium CS6! HAHAHAHAHA. Time for a YT video with my old hard copy box. Sounds like a good idea.
There are too many options on the motion graphics side, and I'll keep a static machine to run Pshop and AE CS4.
The masters of the universe will have theit way, and the rest must bow to their ambivalent greed. At least that's the way they think. It would seem that Adobe and Apple really, really want some upstarts to come up. Maybe $360 for a year to figure out an exit might work. It will be interesting to see if this hits earnings. VERY interesting.
