Exceedingly slow download speeds on brand new mbp os lion

Hi,
There seems to be a lot of posted issues with slow download speeds on the MBP.  I purchased mine 2 weeks ago (Oct 2011), a 13" core i7.  My download speeds are a tiny fraction of what I get with a 10 year old Dell.  Reading the posts on this issue, they all seem to be going in circles.  I am technically very savvy although new to apple.  I did at one point get an acceptable increase in download speeds after manually entering the gateway, subnet and DNS.  However two days later download speeds have reduced from 17.8 MB/s to 37kb/s.  The right now the Dell is screaming a 702MB download.  The MBP slug is telling me it will take 5 hours.
Has anyone ever resolved his issue?

So as mentioned above I tried connecting to the router using a wire instead of wireless..
many sites work fine....but some do not
Example
works fine
Apple.com
gmail.com
does not work fine...the page does not load up and gets stuck in the very beginning....
www.CNN.com
http://www.sportsauthority.com/home/index.jsp
sportauthority has flash embedded on that page....CNN, I do not know...
could it have anything to do with Flash ?

How are you measuring.. by wireless yes, you will experience some reduction.. maybe a lot depending on range of client and wireless type.. is this AC version or earlier airport? What is the link speed of the wireless.. and are multiple devices connected??
If this is purely ethernet, then something is wrong.. we need to know exactly what model airport you are talking about.. A1xxx from the side or base please??

  • Slow connection speeds with brand new Linksys WRT54G.

Hello all, I just purchased a Linksys WRT54G v8.2 router to replace my old Netgear one that bit the dust. Unfortunately it is fresh out of the box and already experiencing an issue: I have a 5 megabit internet connection in my apartment, but my upload/download speeds aren't even breaking 1 megabit when using this router. My latency has also doubled. If I plug the ethernet connection directly into my PC, I receive the expected 5 megabit upload/download speeds, so something is up with the router I suppose. I installed the latest firmware from the linksys site and reset the router a couple times, but no luck.... Anyone have any insight into this issue? Thanks for your help.

The WRT54G should easily be able to handle a 5 Mbps connection.  I assume that the problem is with a wired connection to the router.  Is that correct?
If so, then this is likely a problem of poor connection between modem and router.  This is usually caused either by a very old modem, or a setup problem in the router.
    1)  Please state the make and exact model number of your modem (not the WRT54G).
    2)  Please state your ISP.
    3)  Please do the following test:  Using an ethernet cable, connect your computer directly to your modem  (not the WRT54G).  Verify that you have a working Internet connection.  Then do the following:
Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig /all" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key.   Post all of your results, except that if your "IP address" does not start with 192, then post only the first 3 digits, along with the rest of the info.  To copy the info to your post, highlight the info, then use the copy (Ctrl-c) keys and the paste (Ctrl-v) keys.

  • Painfully slow internet speed on brand new iPod 4???

So today I finally decided to upgrade from my iPod Touch 2nd gen to a 4th gen. I now regret it. The internet connectivity is so slow, it is practically unusable. I know our wifi router is old, but just to check I tested my 2 against my 4. The 2 works perfectly fine over our wifi network--it will download apps, surf the net, and load YouTube and Pandora. The 4, however, does none of this. I tried resetting my network settings and the general settings. The software is up-to-date, according to iTunes. Really don't want to have to invest in a new router on top of the investment already made in the iPod, especially considering my old one seems to work just fine. I've heard that a lot of people have had this problem with the 4, but has anyone found a solution? I appreciate any input immensely!

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Restart the router and the broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?
Run Software Update and install all available updates for OS X or the computer's firmware. Any change?
Are you connected to Ethernet as well as Wi-Fi? If so, disconnect the Ethernet cable or adapter and test.
If possible, connect to the router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
Are any other devices on the network, and if so, are they the same?
If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?
Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?
Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?
Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
Start up in safe mode and test. Any difference?
Start up in Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?
If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference?

  • Firefox won't download in my brand-new iMac Mountain Lion. The icon never appears on my desktop so I can't move it into applications and use it. What's wrong?

I've clicked the "Download" link several times and the only thing that apparently happens is a little blue blip zipping toward the upper right corner of the screen. The icon to move into "Applications" never appears.

Make sure that Firefox gets installed properly.
Open the Firefox disk image (DMG) file and drag the Firefox program to the application folder on your hard drive.
You shouldn't double-click the Firefox application to run it from the disk image, but drag it out of the DMG folder instead.

  • E1200 router: very slow download speeds, ok uploady got

I recently set up a new E1200 router to replace my old one. We are having problems with very slow download speeds (often <0.10 Mbps) even while the upload speeds are OK (8-10 Mbps). Our previous download speed over wifi was 10-15 Mbps.
When I first set it up, the download speed was very poor on the initial computer. After fooling around, it was fine. I don't know what I did that made it speed up. However, my wife's computer has had very poor download speeds. After rebooting my computer, the download speed has also dropped bak to <0.10. I was able to stream Hulu on my Wii just fine an hour ago.
    What could the problem be?

So we could have this isolated, check how much speed you’re getting straight to the modem so we’ll have some point of comparison that from your internet provider. If through the router, you have struggles with not getting an acceptable value for download speed especially if it only happens with the wireless connection, you can try these: change the wireless channel and the wireless security on the router. If on the router, you have the channel set to auto by default change it to (3,6,9,11), just have to play around with it. Moreover, for the wireless security, select WPA2 Personal. If that doesn’t make any difference, update the firmware of the router, reset and have it reconfigured.

  • Very slow download speeds with ATT U-Verse

    Hello,
Experiencing very slow download speeds with Macbook Pro 2011, on Lion,  and ATT UVerse Max, which should allow for an avg. 11-12 MBPS speed. Instead, I get a fluctuating 60-370 kbps speed. I am not experiencing this problem on my Windows machines (Laptop running Windows 7 and Desktop on XP), it is only affecting the Macbook pro. I wonder if this issue is a known problem with ATT U-Verse and Macs, I spent hours yesterday with their support online and they couldn't help me, stating that from their side all settings were OK; the first representative from ATT re-booted the router remotely and that seemed to work for about 10 minutes, and then it went back to a crawling speed...
    Any suggestions welcome!
    Thanks

Do you have QOS enabled in your router? Did you try plugging the win7 laptop directly and check the speed?

  • Why i have very very slow downloading speed on wifi on iphone5

While on wifi I am experiencing very slow downloading speed on iPhone 5. My iPhone 5 is a brand new phone, I have to wait for hours to complete a running download of about 40mb or so. Please help me and tell me if there is any solution to that. On the same wifi network I have the new iPad and iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, all are working perfectly getting perfect speed while downloading but I can't on iPhone 5.

What you did was fine. Leopard is a little different to 10.4.11, but:
Repairing permissions is an important part of regular maintenance, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two.
    Background information here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
    and here:

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • Very slow download speed on ipad 2

Okay folks I need your help.  I have just installed an Airport Extreme (newest model) wirless router and a new Motorola Sufboard modem and my interenet download speed is pretty good on the pc (23-25 Mbps).  However, when I run the speed test on my ipad 2 it is pathetic (.14 - .18 Mbps).  My iphone 4 is getting about the same download speed as well.  I have reset all devices, tried forgetting the network and then signing on again, but nothing helps.  What could be causing the slow download speed on the Apple products?

Okay I got it.  I went into the Airport Utility and changed the channel selection from automatic to manual and then I changed the channel to something different.  There are a lot of house in my neigborhood and I guess the default channel 6 was just way over crowded.  Just did another test on my iphone4 and got a download speed of 18.33 Mbps.  The ipad2 yielded a new speed of 24.24 Mbps.  Much better now.  Thanks!

  • Exceptionally slow download speeds, no answers from company

We upgraded to 75/75 last week. After installing the new router, my husband, who is a network engineer working from home noticed that the download speeds were exceptionally slow, averaging about 1.5 Mbps. Upload speeds were fine. We called customer service last Saturday and were told it was an outage that would be fixed "soon". That was six days ago. Still no fix. He can't work here because the speeds are too slow. While all the customer service reps have been very nice, no one can get us an answer about when, if ever, it will be fixed. Considering calling Comcast. Thoughts? Anyone else having the same issues?

There were some service issues in the northeast today but they were resolved around noonish.   Are you still having the problem? This may all be very basic, especially to your network engineer husband, but.... If you're still having the problem,  are you getting the slow download speeds via wifi or with a hardwired (Ethernet) connection to your router? What results do you get using the Verizon speedtest:  http://my.verizon.com/services/speedtest/ And what results at www.speedtest.net? That additional info may help a fellow user here on the forum suggest where the problem lies and what you might do about it.

  • Aperture 3 not working on brand new MBP???

Just tried to open Aperture 3 on my brand new MBP and I get this error message:
    Dyld Error Message:
      Library not loaded: /Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager
      Referenced from: /Applications/Aperture.app/Contents/MacOS/Aperture
Reason: no suitable image found.  Did find:
/Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager: no matching architecture in universal wrapper
I downloaded A3 from the Mac Store, I've deleted it and re-installed and still get the same message. My MBP is running 10.6.8.
Any ideas, hope you can help.
    Thanks!

Hi, Thanks! The solution on the Macrumors forum worked! A plugin manager issue!
I've copied the solution below for anyone else who may run into the issue.
Turns out it's a simple fix.
For those with the same problem:
    1. Navigate to: /Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager
    2. Delete the PluginManager
    3. Get a new copy of the PluginManager. (You can copy one from a friends macbook) or use the one hosted here: http://qvenon.com/files/PluginManager.zip
    Thanks again!
    best,

  • How many thousands of Apple TV users have to scream their complaints before Apple will respond to the fury over the impossibly slow download speeds of movies bought through iTunes??????

How many thousands of Apple TV users have to scream their complaints before Apple will respond to the fury over the impossibly slow download speeds of movies bought through iTunes?

As jules says, your rate (currently at least) may be slow.
If it used to be good I wonder is your ISP is slowing ('throttling') your speed after you've used so many GB of a quota each day or month - check what they think you should be getting as a download speed.
While Apple's servers do occasionally play up, it's generally the ISP being slow not Apple.
If you're using Google's DNS servers that has caused issues for some.
Recommended speeds for near instant playback:
    SD         2.5Mbps
    720p      6 Mbps
    1080p    8 Mbps
Is your speed test from somewhere like speedtest.net?
It might be helpful to post Mbps to ensure we/you are not confusing speeds by using different units to those measured.

  • 8x slower download speed than Windows laptop on cable

I have cable internet (in Luxembourg). The provider uses Scientific Atlanta EPC2100R2 modems. Download speed is around 1 Mbps, rather than the 8 Mbps advertised. When technicians come to investigate, the connection is 8 Mbps on their Windows laptop. They claim to have several clients on Macs, and none have the problem.
My modems also get fried very often. The provider had to replace my modem twice in four months.
The problem persisted after I replaced my iMac. It may be a software issue, though, as I migrated my old Mac to the new one.
My Mac works fine with ADSL. I haven't tried it with other cable providers.
What can I do? I tried creating new locations in Network preferences, to no avail. Always the same result.

wireless is unreliable for the speedtest as it varies depending on home conditions so only way accpeted is by cable.  if that also shows a problem then you can take it from there

    Need some help.
I run Apple os/x latest version and have since yesterday begun to experience constant very slow download speeds.
