Make sure the external database is available and the Oracle Provider for OLE DB is installed correctly.

I cannot make an ODBC connection from Exce-2007 to Oracle work. I am an expert Excel and VBA user (since 1994) and I have frequently used Excel to access ODBC databases, including Oracle (I have done this with Excel-2003 both with worksheet queries and have written VBA ADO-connection routines). And even though in Excel-2007 a worksheet ODBC query is supposed to be easier to create than in previous version of Excel, my connection fails. Any suggestions and all help are welcome and much appreciated.
DETAILS


1) What is my system? I am using Excel-2007 on Windows Vista x64 and Oracle server v.11g on my computer (all this is on my computer, no network issues).
2) Why use Excel with Oracle at all? I use Excel-2007 to access Oracle rather than Access-2007 (or any other application like TOAD, etc.) because I do engineering calculations with the data stored in Oracle. These calculations are easier done in Excel (I suppose that one alternative to this could be to use some sql or Access to get the data from the database, then store it as plain vanilla CSV file, then open this file in Excel, then do the math (the math involves complex optimisation algorithms), then save the results as CSV, then use some sql or Access to put the data back into the database. Howwever this does not strike me as a quick or neat solution. And after all Excel has been designed to access ODBC databases, so why not use it?)
3) What do I do in Excel-2007 that won't work? I create an ODBC link to Oracle that does not work. In Excel-2007 this is straightforward:

<ul>
<li>define an ODBC connection (Data tab --> From other sources --> From data connection wizard);</li>
<li>define a query on the worksheet -- that's it, this is all!</li>
</ul>

I start with creating an ODBC connection:
a) I choose an ODBC data source type: ODBC DSN
b) Excel-2007 displays the list of the available ODBC data sources. I see in it my Oracle database name and I select it.
c) Excel-2007 displays the Data Link Properties:
- the "Provider" has a list of the OLE DB drivers with preselected "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers". I keep this default selection.
- the "Connection" tab has a connection string "DSN=<my database name>" which I keep, it also has fields for the user name and the password, which I fill with the correct credentials.
- Finally there is a button "Test Connection", which when I click produces the following error message:
"Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider. 
Unespecified error"

4) Additional food for thought:
a) In the above walk-through the only data, which I type, are the user name and password, everything else is selected from lists offered by Excel-2007, hence any possibility of typos being the cause of the problem can safely be discarded.
b) I can test the ODBC driver in the Control Panel and it shows that it can connect to the Oracle database:
- in Control Panel --> Admin Tools --> Data Sources (ODBC) on the "User DSN" tab I can see the list of the available ODBC data sources (same list as in Excel-2007, point 3b above) with the name of my database in it;
- selecting the name of my database from the list of the sources and clicking "Configure" button opens a tab with Data Source Name (same as in Excel-2007), TNS Service Name and User ID. I enter <user name>/<password> and click "Test Connection" button. A message "Connection successful" appears (just for a test I enter incorrect user credentials and "Unable to connect" message appears)
BOTTOM LINE


The procedure for using an ODBC connection from Excel is very simple, in the past I have created and used such connections numerous times with Excel-2003 and earlier on Win-XP and earlier. But now on Excel-2007 and Vista-x64 I cannot make it work.
Also, testing an ODBC connection driver is really easy and simple to be done in the Control Panel. There testing the same ODBC connection, which fails in Excel-2007, results in success.
I am frustrated by the simplicity of the problem and yet the persistant error. I have lost now two full days in failed attempts to make the simple procedure work and in searching the internet for answers.

Excel 2007 is a 32-bit application.
When installing 32-bit applications in a 64-bit environment, the "default" location is:
C:\Program files (x86)\...
Excel then launches from this location.
However, when it connects to Oracle and passes the name of the calling program, Oracle attempts to "interpret" the value of (x86) as if
the value within the parenthesis are being passed as a reference. Of course, iOracle doesn't find anything, so the result is (),
and then it cannot return the connection info back to the calling application.
I corrected it by installing Excel in C:\Program Files\, and once launched from that location, it works the same as on the 32-bit machines.
However, at my location, they are FORCING Excel to be installed in the(x86) location.
What I'm trying to discover now is:
Is it possible to flag Oracle to NOT process the embedded variables?
Or, is it possible to assign a variable in Oracle such that x86 = "(x86)", so that the end result is viable?
Have you had any luck with your installation?

I received error message "Transfer date 30.06.2007 is more than one year after the closed fiscal year" - message number AC 187. Used Tcode OAAQ when tried to reverse year end closing for depreciation area. How can i correct this problem? I want to finish for the whole year 2007 depreciation.

So few things which I see as a problem are-
1. You should use URL https://hostname:soa_server_ssl_port/b2b/httpReceiver instead of https://dev-nog.server:443/b2b/transportServlet
2. SOA server SSL port should be enabled (SSL should be enabled on SOA server)
3. You should configure wallet at 10g side to contain trust cert of 11g server

SRM Error message Workcenter data incomplete

Client is having problems creating PO's in SRM. The client is getting an error message Workcenter data incomplete. Enter data in all required fields. I have ran the consistency check and it look OK.
When I move them from one org to another the error goes away. Both Org structures are at the same level, but in the one structure all the persons have the same error. Address for person (BP) 0000001232 contains errors: e-mail address missing when I run the Branch for sysnchronization for repair for this unit.

Error message: The data for filename was already added to the form

I recently modified an existing data-collection PDF - only mod was to add some additional pull-down menu options in two fields. I went thru the Distribution wizard, tested the revised form, added the PDF to the Responses file...everything seemed fine. Next day, I distributed the revised form, and had 22 submissions. When adding the 22 submissions to the Response file, 6 or 7 bounced with the error message "The data for <filename> was already added to the form", even though that was not true. I went back, cleared all, and added one of the "bad" files to the response form. It went in OK, but I could not add another "bad one". Although several of the forms may be submitted by the same person, the data is different in all of the submissions, plus, we've been doing this procdure for over a year and never had an issue until now.
The original form may have been created in Acrobat X, and I have Acrobat 9 Pro. Not sure if that is part or all of the answer. Thanks for any insights...I saw a posting in the Reader side, but I can't see any answers.

Can you start QuickTime on your computer?
You'll probably have to search for the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and use it to remove QuickTime Player and iTunes. Then download and install the iTunes again.

Error while deleting data source : Message RSO414

Hello Guys,
We have activated data source 2LIS_04_PKKANBAN and entire standard BI content . When i tried to extract data, i got 0 records initially and after that i came to know that some functions needs to be activated in ECC to extract KANBAN data.
We activated some function and deleted & filled setup tables for KANBAN and i can see data in RSA3 (368 Records). Then i tried to extract data into SAP BI. it took me 20 minutes but ended with error. "Data Source needs to be activated again as it was changed (We just activated one function only) nothing changed to data source" I activated data source again in ECC and replicate on SAP BI side but i am not able to get it in activated mode.
I tried to activate it manually and it takes 20-25 minutes but i am not able to activate it and getting error "Error when activating DataSource : MESSAGE NO RSO414 " "Error when resetting DataSource 2LIS_04_PKKANBAN to the active version". i also can't delete data source as when i try to delete it, i get the error "ERROR WHEN DELETING DATA SOURCE : MESSAGE NO RSO414" . What to do in this situation ?

Also there is no FM in SAP BI called RS_DATASOURCE_ACTIVATE_ALL. I have activated data source in my ERP system and replicated same on BI side as we don't have standard Transfer Rules or Transformation, i can't use RS_TRANSTRU_ACTIVATE_ALL .

IDoc acknowledgement with all error messages

We are getting one IDoc in SAP from middleware and after it is processed we need to send acknowledgement back to sender system with all the messages in IDoc.
I tried with ALEAUD msg type, but it seems it only send IDoc last status.
However, requirement is to send back all error messages which came during IDoc processing to sender system, can any1 please suggest?

The list of all error messages is in the file ErrorMessages_en.properties.
If you have SDK installed then this file for base ME is located in Base ME Resources/resources/properties.

Write All Error Messages

Hi Folks,
I have developed an application using JBuilder that works perfectly in the JBuilder environment (i.e. without any errors).
The application purpose is iterative (doing the same thing many times), using Threads and large internet connection.
Now, I have created an executable and it runs to a certain point then BANG... it fails. The failure is simply that the window freezes.
QUESTION: Is it possible to capture all error messages into a log file generated by the application? Pref, via text file.
I know how to create a text file and am familar with the text file handling. However, I am not familar in how to set the application to dumb anything there.
In addition :- Is there any way to check the error messages through the JSE (Java development environment).

Thanks for your response, much appreciated. I have one or two followup points.
My application currently uses extensively try & catch and in every catch there is a method call that writes the output to a log file.
My issue is that running the application in JBuilder it works fine. However running the application as an executable it crashes after a short time. The issue find exactly what code is causing the issue.
In JBuilder if I dont catch the error, it throughs the error out in the execution panel. I was wondering if there exists any such log/panel for applications being executed, or if I can program my application to always dump into a file if it crashes.
Saying all this... I think I have found the issue. I have installed two versions of Java Runtime Environments. Could this be the issue?
I have the application running again to see if this time it ends. It takes 4 hours to complete and crashes have been occuring randomly.
Keeping my fingers crossed.

I have configured revenue recognition type "B" for my item categories and I am using BOMs where pricing is set at item level. The issue is that when I have more than one components in my BOM then I get an error message (Missing data: Provision account Message no. VU019) at the time of saving sales order though I have configured the provision account. However If I enter the same component/material in the sales order without BOM which will have same pricing data then it does not through the above error message. Please help what could be the potential issue.
