Excel 2013 "Someone else is working in (file)"

A user where I work gets a "Someone else is working in (file)" message intermittently when he tries to save Excel files. He is the only one using these files.  He doesn't encounter that message every time he tries to save. Only occasionally.
When it is happening, I noticed a few consistent behaviors:
1) Each time a file is saved, a .tmp file appears in its directory.  The .tmp files can be opened if their extension is changed to the type of file they are (.docx or .xlsx)
2) The .tmp creation only happens on network drives.  A .docx or .xlsx file can be saved on the hard drive without that happening.
That is what I've observed.  The user also says a few files have disappeared after attempting to save and he's occasionally received messages other than "Someone else is working in (file)".
I've read that antivirus software is a common cause of this.  We are using TrendMicro Officescan.  I'm also suspicious of our backup system, Symantec Backup Exec, and he does use Microsoft Sync Center too.
Does anyone know what might be causing this?

Hi,
As we know, Office creates TMP files like "$.tmp file" when you open a document. Saving does not delete the files if we still have them open. And this issue occur with network drive not local disk, so
it might be caused with the account permission of the network drive. If your user has no delete permission, the temp file might be not delete after closed the file. Please try to check the permission first.
Then, if there are some mistaken operations when using the files in network drive, we could delete the temp file manually, and then the error would disappear. Please see the similar thread:

  • Excel file save error: Someone else is working in file right now. Please try again later.

When trying to save a modified Excel file, which has been opened from a network share, our users are receiving the following message:
Someone else is working in "\\domain.com\users\username\Document.xls" right now. Please try again later.
The clients that have been affected are Windows 7 clients, and the DFS share is being served from a Windows 2012 server. I have already confirmed that DFS replication has not been enabled, so it isn't trying to lock files for replication. I have also disabled
any real-time scanning that is occurring on the client to make sure that the AV software wasn't locking the files. I did notice when viewing the list of Open Files from the server's Computer Management console that when a users experiences this issue the file
appears to be opened 4 times. Three times it shows that it was opened in Read mode and the 4th instance shows an Open Mode of Write. Typically, a file which is working correctly should just show one instance with the Open Mode of Read+Write. None of these
open instances are temporary files preceded with a ~.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi,
Does the issue occur in other operation system? Which Office version are you using? Have you ever tried to test with word document, PPT file or txt file?
Based on your description, the issue may be caused by the same file open multiple time in computer management on SQL server. The user probably has User Access Control (UAC) enabled on the machine and it is not letting him overwrite the existing
copy of the file because she does not have it open in administrator mode. UAC will block overwriting (saving) the existing file without Administrative privileges and it will automatically open the save as dialog so you can save with a different name and
if you click save without changing the name at the point, it tries to save as a new file over the existing file and it can't because the file is open.
I recommend you check the user's permission (Which showed in Computer Management console) and end the Excel file instance in the task manager of the user's client.
Also, we may try the workaround: Save it to local drive(like drive c:) and then copy it to DFS.
    Thanks

  • Excel not letting user save to shared drive, only user using the files, yet it says someone else is using the file.

I have seen this problem discussed before, but have never seen a clear cut solution.
I have a user using Excel 2013. She can create and open files locally, but when she tries to move or save to a shared network drive, she gets the error "Someone else is working in (shared drive/filename) please try again later. She's the only one using
the file most of the time.
I have done a repair on the Office installation, but the user is still having the issue, and I need to remedy this. She has appropriate file/folder permissions on the network. Really stuck on this one.

  • Excel saving issues error: Someone else is working right now, please try again later"

Excel saving issues  error: Someone else is working right now, please try again later"
I am running W8.1 with Office 2013 and accessing a shared drive, When I try to save an excel document back to the shared drive - I get the error msg
"Someone else is working in "servername\share\filename" right now, please try again later"
I can see that there is no one else accessing this file at all. I created a brand new file, added content, saved and got the same error.
When I use a W7 with Office 2013 accessing the same share drive, accessing the same file - I am able to save the document without issues.
Does anyone have any ideas what this could be.  Both of these situations are while working from home using a company vpn connection. It does not happen when in the office using either W8.1 or W7.
    Peter.

    Hi,
Saves when saving locally. Its looking more like W8.1 on a VPN connection that is causing the issue. What can I look for
I mean you can try to save it to local drive(like drive c:) and then copy it to shared drive.
If you gain the access to the shared file server, you can check the file status when you open this file.
Also you can check your event log to see which process causes this error.
Since I'm not familiar with VPN, I'd suggest you post your issue to the following forum:

  • Microsoft Excel 2013 add-in not working after update

I have originally posted this question at answers.microsoft.com and have been re-directed to post here. (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2013_release-excel/microsoft-excel-2013-add-in-not-working-after/298aff03-c90a-4a2a-b67b-07b6f3c7648c)
We are an organization with over 200 users and are currently using Microsoft Office 2013 (Click-to-run install via Office 365 portal), we have noticed that in Excel when we apply the monthly Office update, the add-in (e.g. Analysis Toolpak) would stop working
with the following error message displayed.
    I tried updating from 15.0.4631.1004 to 15.0.4641.1003,
15.0.4641.1003 to 15.0.4649.1004, they all gave the same results.
I have checked the captioned file path and it is indeed missing, I think the update mechanism messed up the add-in somehow, a full re-install would fix it as quick or online repair is not doing the trick.  This is not the only add-in it is affecting
as there are some 3rd party add-ins are affected as well.
Please advise how we can fix this without needing to re-install Microsoft Office.  Thank you!

I don't have 365 or C2R so I can't address your main question, so just a few thoughts which may not be applicable in your setup.
Check the addin manager to see if your addins are listed and ticked. If listed (ticked or not) check the registry to see where the location is written, if ticked look here
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Excel\Options
and look for keys named OPENx, where x is the order number the addin is loaded
if not "ticked" instead of \Options look in \Add-in-Manager
With a VBA macro or in the VBE's immediate window return
    Application.LibraryPath
Assuming you found a listing in the registry do the paths match, if not look in the .LibraryPath to see if the addins got unloaded there into the subfolder \Analysis
If you find the file(s) try un-installing and reinstalling the addins, but browse to the actual folder don't simply tick. If you can't find the files, copy them (from a different system) to the folder indicated by .LibraryPath. In the addin manager uninstall
them if installed, close the manager, open it again and the addins should be listed, tick to re-install.
You say your other addins don't work, I wonder if some mixup has occurred with what Excel thinks is the default path, but note for other addins the default addins path is returned by app.UserLibraryPath
Are you using a Chinese system?

  • Excel 2013 stalling at splash screen for files in use by others

Excel 2013 is stalling (and not opening) when trying to open a file that is in use by another user. In office 2010 it would prompt the user to open in read-only mode, but in 2013 it seems to just stall and never open. It just stays on the splash screen
for ever. We have done some testing and it appears that double clicking on an excel file causes this to occur, but will function correctly if the file is opened through excel's file browser.  Any suggestions on how to fix this?  It's a pain to make
all the users open excel first, then browse through a lengthy network location.  Thanks in advance!
For information purposes: these are files on a network location shared by many users.

    Hi,
Did the issue occur when you just installed the Office 2013 or after using Office 2013 sometimes? I recommend we try the following methods and test to check if they are helpful.
    1. Click the File tab>Options>Advanced>scroll down to the General section>Clear the Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) check box in the General area.
    2. Install the latest Cumulative Update for Excel
    3. Right click on the Start Button>Click 'Open Windows Explorer'> click Organize > Layout> Uncheck Details Pane and Preview Pane.
On a Windows menu, click on Tools > Folder Options.  In the box that opens up, click on the View tab.  Scroll down the list to “Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items” and clear the checkbox and then click OK.
    4. Check/Disable the Excel add-ins
    5. Repair Office.
    Hope it's helpful.

  • I have created a .m4v file from iPhoto and would like to share it with someone else knowing that the file is quiet large (86 Mo), i used to share file with mobileme, how Can I do that with iCloud ? or another way....

In iphoto, I have create a diaporama which I exported to itunes as a m4v file. I would like to share this file with someone but it is too big to send it via email (84 Mo). This file is now in my films in itunes. Is there a way to share it via icloud.
I used to share files using mobileme which I cannot use anymore.
    Thanks for your help,

How recently did you switch?  If it's less than 60 days, then Verizon simply reinstates your previous account.  The fact that you were on the EDGE plan and mailed the devices back, and they apparently are somewhere in the system, could cause complications, and it might just work out that you just go back on the same plan and they set you up with the same devices.  I'm not sure how it will go - but since you are still being billed for the devices...

  • MDS Add-in for Excel 2013 Publish Button stops working

We have users that are making changes in Entities and every 10-15 minutes they publish their changes. On occasion (pretty regularly) after they make their changes and click the publish button nothing happens. Its like the particular sheet just thinks there
are no changes to publish. They are doing some Excel filtering and copying by entering one cell and clicking lower right corner and dragging down.
They can refresh and still can't publish. They have to bring up the data on another sheet and then they can make the same changes they were trying to publish and it will publish in the new sheet. Its like the original sheet just thinks there are no changes
pending. There is no communication to MDS and nothing in windows or MDS error log.
This is a very poor user experience and is souring the users on the tool altogether.

  • Microsoft excel 2013 stops working and getting very slow when I work in one file

I am using windows 8.1 pro in my office and I have excel 2013,
When I'm working on excel generally there is no problem, but I have an excel file which I work on in it's too slow and stops working, I have also tried to open the same file in another computer which is having the same problem.
while I was using Office 2010 it was working very fine, I can also share my file with you if you want in order to be checked and resolved.
I appreciate if you help me,

    Hi,
You can share the file with us by sending it to GBSD TN Office Information Collection [email protected] Be sure that you have the private information hidden.
Meanwhile, since it works fine in Office 2010, we can try to open the file in Excel 2010, then go to File > Options > Formulas, check if you have enabled iterative calculation. If so, uncheck the check box and switch the workbook calculation to Manually.
Then, save the changes and then open the modified excel using Excel 2013 to see the result.
Please let me know the result.

  • Issues Saving Files; Excel 2013

Users are unable to save files using Excel 2013 (both .xls and .xlsx) to network share space. the return is "Someone else is working on 'J:\network space name\filename' right now. Please try again later". There are no other users
currently using the file in question and Folder and file ACL allows for full control. Users are able to save to their persistent D:\ volume (we are using VMware) but unable to breach the network space. I have full administrative rights and am experiencing
the same results, this includes a newly created file, files for which I have total ownership and files for which i have full control over. This condition is only true for Excel 2013, Office and other Suite applications are functioning well within tolerance.
This condition originally manifested when we first rolled out the MSFT Office 2013 image but subsided when we modified Trend Micro so that it would not scan edited files. After that it would only manifest occasionally and to single or a couple of users but
has now returned to being global. Any ideas as to how to remedy this would be greatly appreciated.

The blog post speaks to an error message that is not what my users are seeing. There is no reference to files being 'locked', rather it suggests that another user may be viewing the same file precluding a save action. Initially we believed it was related
to an issue caused by .TMP files but as it turned out a refresh of AV baseline policy relieved the condition. So it may have been a cache issue and how the AV was handling the temporary file but details behind causality could not be determined beyond refreshing
    the base policy.
Thank you for your suggestion though, I appreciate the consideration.

    Hi,
when I create a new file xlsx from right click->new - > spreadsheet Excel, it create me a file that cannot be opened with Excel 2013.
The error that excel return me is: "Excel cannot open the file 'filename.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been
corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."
If I see the properties of this file it's 0 bytes.

  • When opening files in excel 2013, it is showing contacting.... makes it very slow

When I open a file in excel 2013 , it is shown that the file is contacting so many files (ONE EXAMPLE IS ATTACHED HEREWITH) that it takes nearly 2-3 minutes to open. But the same file is opened in Excel 2010 immediately.
However this file doesn't have any links or references or formulae and the files which are being contacted, I think, have nothing to do with this file.
How to solve this problem? We have around 1000 PCs of Windows 7 in our organization and this makes the users very annoying. Please help me...

For the questions you raised the answers are,
    1. No, the excel files which excel 2013 is contacting are not in the same folder.
2 . both, local workbook and received through mail.
    3. before I tell the outcome of your suggestion, I have attached the few lines which I got fromone of the users.
The following are the problem experienced in Newly Installed Office 2013 Excel Software
While opening file containing links to external link, relatively longer time (approx. 2-3 min) is taken for opening the file.
Even if the links to external sources are
delinked, all the references are being contacted while opening the file. This is also taking the same time like the old file.
When more than two excel files are opened, only last file is available in the tab. Rest of the files are hidden in the minimized tab.
As per the user, he has linked some files to this excel file(problematic file). But even after the links are removed and the problematic file is opened it is still contacting the old linked files.
    Please suggest something.

  • Block SaveAs Panel in Excel 2013

    Hi All,
I have used the following script for several years now, but on porting something across to Excel 2013 it no longer works as desired and the SaveAs Panel opens regardless.
    The script I use is:
Private Sub Workbook_BeforeSave(ByVal SaveAsUI As Boolean, Cancel As Boolean)
    Dim strMsgBoxTitle As String
    Dim strMsgBoxBody As String
    Dim vbvMsgBoxStyle As VbMsgBoxStyle
    Dim vbvMsgBoxResult As VbMsgBoxResult
    If UserClass = 3 Then
    strMsgBoxTitle = "ProjectCalc"
strMsgBoxBody = "Save as new version?"
    vbvMsgBoxStyle = vbYesNo + vbQuestion + vbDefaultButton2
    vbvMsgBoxResult = MsgBox(strMsgBoxBody, vbvMsgBoxStyle, strMsgBoxTitle)
    If vbvMsgBoxResult = vbYes Then
    Application.Run "ResetForNewVersion"
    Else
    GoTo SaveProject
    End If
    Else
    GoTo SaveProject
    End If
    Exit Sub
    SaveProject:
    ThisWorkbook.Saved = True
    Cancel = True
    Application.Run "SaveProject", 1
    End Sub
Before the MsgBox appears, the SaveAs panel now opens in 2013 as per the screen grab below.  It makes no difference if I move the "Cancel = True" to the top or even pull the SaveAsUI = False command out of the "SaveProject" Sub and
put this as line one in this sub either.  The SaveAs Panel still opens.
This is a file that's opened from a template ".XLTM"
Once you select any random location to save, the scripts take over and takes the user to the correct directory regardless of what they choose, so they end up wasting time browsing through to a directory only then to find that the system has
    taken them somewhere else regardless.
I've searched here for the solution, I've Googled for the solution and everyone is using the solution I already have in place.  Only it no longer works as the panel appears to activate before the BeforeSave function.
    Help please!

    Hi Antony,
I can reproduce this issue in *.xltm file by using the code you post. Based on my understanding, the end user will usually use the ".xlsm" file, and as I tested, this issue did not exist in the ".xlsm" file. So I think you could use ".xlsm"
    file as a quick workaround.
Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding.
    Best Regards,
    Edward

  • Excel 2013 Constantly Crashes: Event 1000, Application Error 'Exception Code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x00ac6660

    Hello Microsoft Gurus!
One of the employees in my office is constantly having problems with Excel 2013 crashing while doing work. We even made him use the safe mode version of excel, but he still was getting crashes. I'll try to provide as much information as I can, and if there's
anything I need to do on my end, please let me know.
This is the message that pops up when his computer crashes:
"Do you want to send more information about the problem? Additonal details about what went wrong can help Microsoft create a solution"
Files that help describe the problem:
      C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Temp\29422974.cvr
      C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Temp\CVRFA9B.tmp.cvr
      C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Temp\WERF771.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml
      C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Temp\WERCA7.tmp.appcompat.txt
      C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Temp\WERCF6.tmp.mdmp
Upon looking at the Windows App Error Logs, this is what shows up.
Faulting application name: EXCEL.EXE, version: 15.0.4701.1001, time stamp: 0x54e3066c
Faulting module name: EXCEL.EXE, version: 15.0.4701.1001, time stamp: 0x54e3066c

    Source: Application Error
    Event ID: 1000
    Level: Error
    User: N/A
    Taks Category (100)
What additional information is needed to decipher what is causing this to break? I have already tried suggestions from other technet articles (disabling hardware acceleration, using only 2013 files, safe mode excel, repairing office 2013, uninstalling/reinstalling
office 2013, etc.). I even tried using Procmon to try to find what 'function' was causing excel to crash but it was way beyond my expertise level. Can someone please advise what to do?
Also (not sure if this is related or not) Excel opens up 'blank' when he opens any type of model (.xls, .xlsx) that no other user is experiencing (exactly same computer model, same install, etc.). All the toolbars are there, but no data can be seen. Only when
he double clicks the top to shrink/maximize the excel window does the data appear.
    Thanks!
btw, this verification thing is pretty stupid, i now have to manually type in the messages instead of just putting a picture. ugh.

    Hi Bob,
As I said, with your event log messages the faulting module is EXCEL.EXE, I can get less useful information about your constantly crashes problem. Thus, I need you to collecting the app crash dump file. This articles teach you how to collect app crash dump
    file:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2007/06/15/capturing-application-crash-dumps.aspx
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/927069/en-us
Enable app crash dump collection by copying following words into notepad, saving it as dump.reg and importing
    it:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\localdumps\EXCEL.EXE]
    "DumpFolder"=hex(2):63,00,3a,00,5c,00,63,00,72,00,61,00,73,00,68,00,64,00,75,\
      00,6d,00,70,00,73,00,00,00
    "DumpCount"=dword:00000010
    "DumpType"=dword:00000001
    "CustomDumpFlags"=dword:00000000
    Then, open Excel to
repro the issue. If crash issue appeared, please find the crashdump file under c:\.
You can try to analyze dump by yourself if you would like to:
