Excel 97-2003 Worksheet (.xls) Corrupted

Error Msg when opening "The file may be corrupted, located on a server that is not responding, or read-only.". Been through various google/yahoo searches but none of the given steps are able to resolve this issue. Software ExcelFix is able to recover
( view only mode) but asking for USD 160.
Is there any alternative cheaper way to recover ?
Please help

Hi,
Did this issue occur with the special file or every file? Would you like to tell us which steps/methods you have tried? Please see the following methods and test them if you have not used.
1. Repair a corrupted workbook manually.
On the File tab, click Open.
In the Open dialog box, select the corrupted workbook that you want to open.
Click the arrow next to the Open button, and then click Open and Repair.
To recover as much of the workbook data as possible, click Repair.
2. Open the file, cancel the error and convert it to the new (.xlsx) format
3. Go to Control panel>all control panel items> default programs>set associations>set Current Default for extension 'xlsx' and 'xls' to 'Microsoft Excel'
4. Modify the registry entries for launching Excel, it mgith be messed up.
RegEdit > HKey_Classes_Root\Excel.Sheet.12\shell\edit\ddeexec should be
[open("%1",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,0)]
and
RegEdit > HKey_Classes_Root\Excel.Sheet.12\shell\edit\command should be
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\EXCEL.EXE" /dde  (It applies to Office 2013 32bit)
"C:\Program Files \Microsoft Office\Office15\EXCEL.EXE" /dde  (It applies to Office 2013 64bit)
Finally, if this issue still exists, I recommend we recover the data instead of recover the file, please follow the below link to do it:

  • Unable to save xls file from website in the "Microsoft Office Excel 97-2003 Worksheet" format. The browser is saving in unrecognized "File" Type

The version I am using is 3.6.11
The file is stored in the server in the format "Microsoft Office Excel 97-2003 Worksheet"
But when I download it, it gets saved in the unrecognized format type "File"
The servlet code written to download the file sets the content type to "application/vnd.ms-excel"
I am able to save the file in Microsoft Office Excel 97-2003 Worksheet format using Internet Explorer Browser without any issues.
But it does not work with the Mozilla Firefox. Any plug-in needed to make it work?

Did you try to add the .xls file extension yourself to those files?

  • Unable to open embedded Microsoft Excel 97-2003 worksheet in Microsoft Word 2013 docx document?

Below is the steps to reproduce this issue.
    1. Open Microsoft Word 2013, create a blank Word document.
    2. Insert Ole object of type Microsoft Excel 97-2003 worksheet or Microsoft Word 97-2003 document.
    3. Save the document as Docx format and close the document. (Saving as Doc format works fine)
    4. Open the saved Docx format in Microsoft Word 2013, now try opening the Ole object.
    5. Error message is thrown as below image.

    Hi,
This issue might be caused by the third-party software/add-in on your machine, interfering with the OLE process (the technical thing that lets you create/edit an object from an outside application inside Word).
Based on my tested with my local environment (Office 2013 & Windows8.1), if I enabled some Excel Com add-ins with Microsoft Excel 97-2003 worksheet, I would get the same error when I embedded it to Microsoft Word 2013 DOCX file. Then, I go to Excel>file>options>add-ins.
Then down the bottom select COM Add-ins from the drop down menu and hit go. Uncheck everything. After that, I could embedded the Microsoft Excel 97-2003 worksheet well.
Please try the suggestion and hope it's helpful.

  • BEx 7.0 - Save EXCEL 2007 workbooks in .XLS - format

    Hi there,
I am currently creating some workbooks with BEx 7.0 .
I am using Excel2007, so the workbooks are saved as .XLSM files. However, it should be possible to open them with an Excel 2003 installation as well, so I tried to safe the workbooks as .XLS files.
I tried to proceed according to SAP OSS note 1052761 (changing the default format in which workbooks are saved to Excel 97 - 2003), but this did not work (the note also only aplies to BEX 3.5).
(I tried saving an old workbook under a new name as well as creating a new workbook from scratch. In both cases, .XLSM files where created and EXCEL 2003 users received error messages when trying to open the workbook).
Does anyone have a piece of advice for me?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Cannot open some Excel 97-2003 files on iphone

I'm having some troubling behaviour with openening Excel attachements on my iPhone recieved as email attachments.
Documents from Excel 2003 seem to open fine, be they saved as ".xls", or specifically as "Excel 97-2003" .xls files, or even in the newer .xlsx format.
However, sporadically, "Excel 97-2003" documents (and seemingly only this format) won't open. It seems to be when this format is generated by another program like Access.
Any insights? This is really a problem for my job communication.

Has anyone found a solution to this problem? My contract is up and I was looking at getting a new iPhone but if this is going to keep being an issue I am going to have to look at switching to one of the Droids. I use this for work and I can not keep running to my computer when I need to view these files sent to me.

  • Excel viewer 2003 - cannot open XLSX

    Hi,
We use Excel Viewer 2003 for terminal services users.  The server is patched with the latest hot fix and office patches.  We have Excel viewer 2003 SP3 installed with the latest compatibility pack / fileformatconverters.
Can someone tell me why it won't open XLSX?
We use Excel viewer 2003 for legacy reasons, so it cannot be upgraded to 2007 / 2010.
    Thanks.

Update:  This works on a Windows 7 client, following deployment the version is 11.6412.6412.  If the same application is deployed to a Windows Server 2008 server, the version is 11.6412.8172.  Even though it is the exact same application
with the same compatibility pack, something is altering the version it reports in at. Any ideas?

  • Exporting CRM 2011 SSRS 2008 report to excel uses old Excel 1997-2003 version

The Notes field is appearing cut off on the exported excel spreadsheet. I am wondering if it is related to the version of excel when exporting from CRM report. The only option is MS Excel 1997-2003, when in fact we have MS Office 2010 installed. How can
I get the report export to excel to use the 2010 version? Will this clear up the issue of the excel cell from being too small to dispay the entire field? Any help would be appreciated, Thank you, Mark A M

    Hi Mark A M,
In SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services, the Excel rendering extension renders a report that is compatible with Microsoft Excel 1997-2003. This is the unique renderer for Excel renderer in SSRS 2008. Since SSRS 2012, the default Excel renderer is the version
compatible with Microsoft Excel 2007-2010. So we cannot export the report to excel use Microsoft Excel 2007-2010 version in SSRS 2008. This is by design.
As to your issue, please note that the width of the column in Excel which inherit the width in the report. So we need make sure the cell width is sufficient to display the Notes field in report.

  • Failed to export the report... to Microsoft Excel (97-2003) Data-only

I'm using Crystal Report version 12.1.0.892
I'm trying to export reports to 'Microsoft Excel (97-2003) Data-only' (an option I use all of the time), and am getting the message "Failed to export the report."
It only started this week.  I can export to "'Microsoft Excel (97-2003)" (and PDF, etc.) without incident, but it's not what I want.
I have not made any changes to Crystal Reports, but have applied updates to Microsoft Windows XP (ver 2002, SP 3).
    Any ideas?

I'm having the same error and have a subreport with 3 groups. The subreport data being returned is all in the Details section. All other sections of the sub are suppressed.
I can export the main report fine (it's just headers). I can also drill into the sub and export that fine, but of course get back only limited data. When I try to export the whole thing it chokes.
    Any thoughts?
    Many thanks for your help.

  • Updating Linked Excel File: Changing Worksheets

I have a series of InDesign documents with linked Excel files filled with area-specific rate tables.
The Excel files contain several different areas separated into worksheets. Each worksheet layout is identical. Only the data in the tables changes.
I have a template file set up pointing at Excel File A Worksheet 1, and I would like to redirect the link to Excel File A Worksheet 2.
The problem is that when I ask InDesign to relink, it asks me for the cell coordinates all over again. This ruins my efficiency.
Is there a way to update only the linked file's worksheet, from Excel File A Worksheet 1 to Excel File A Worksheet 2, without resetting the cell coordinates?

I've seen this error sporadically and have no clue what causes it. The
only thing you can do is follow the direction and re-place the file.

  • Embedded Excel in Word 2003 document Becomes Corrupt when Saved

We have a Word 2003 document with Embedded Excel sheets in it.  When this document is saved and reopened, you cannot edit the excel tables, you just get the message "document corrupt, no longer available".
Detect and Repair doesn't fix it, it seems to make the excel table a picture or object that cannot be edited.
What is the fix for this?

  • Passworded Excel 97-2003 file will not open in excel 2013

I can not open a file that I have saved as a passworded 97-2003 excel file using excel 2013.  When opening the file, it will ask for the password, I put in the password in, and excel freezes and then has to clkose because it will not open the file.
The file is NOT corrupt and will open on my computer with Office2007.  I can actually create a passworded file with excel 2013 but save it as a 97-2003 version, but when I try to open that file it will not open either?
Please explain to me how I am suppose to get the information off my 97-2003 file on this excel 2013 version??????
AGAIN the file is not corrupt and I don't want to open my file with my 2007 version machine, I want this passworded 97-2003 file to open with my excel 2013 machine!!!!!!!
Please send me a fix to this, and I've check the forum.  None of the work around options work.  NONE, I've checked them all.
This only appears to be a problem with a passworded 97-2003 file.  If it's not passworded it opens.

    Hi,
I have not been able to reproduce as I am able to open password protected .XLS Binary Format Files with Excel 2013. Can you provide more information?
Also, I don't believe this is a SharePoint Question?
