Excel cant find this file when double clicking to open

Hi,
Our Imacs 10.8.2 and 10.7.3 joined to windows 2008 domain cant open certain excel files from the network share. When double clicking the file or opening from excel -> file open it says it cant find the file. If I drag the file to the desktop then it will open when double clicked. I have tried disconnecting the network drive and reconnecting. I checked permissions and even tried a few cleaner products such as mac keeper and ccleaner and still the same issue. I even upgraded one of the macs from 10.6.8 to 10.7.3 and the issue persisted. Its very strange as some users can open but others cant. Any insight greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Lorne

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")

My mac is converting Word and Excel files into Pages and Numbers files when I click to open them from an email. Downloading them and opening them doesn't help. How do I make this stop? I don't use iLife and don't want to; my clients are using Office and it's easier for me, except when I have to copy and paste everything they send me from an iLife file back to Word and Excel. Help!!! It's like Apple has become Microsoft, forcing us to use their apps.

Do you have Word & Excel installed, if yes, navigate in the finder to an example of each, right click and select 'Get Info' scroll down to 'Open With' and select the appropriate program, check the box that says 'Change All'

No, you are doing exactly the right thing.  Open the inca file in the InCopy Assignments > Assignment Name folder. You may even want to delete the original package (or at least archive it) right after you open it to prevent opening it accidentally.
Like Bob said, sounds like some sort of internal Windows issue. Try reassociating the extensions with the program.
Or can you right-click and choose Open With?

  • My network drives crashed and I was able to restore one with the exact same name and login.  The second one I also created using the same name and login but it does not find the files when I click.

I get Connection failed when I click on the photo in IPhoto. This window keeps popping up and I have to force quit IPhoto.

iPhoto tracks referenced files using Aliases and this works just fine when the Library and the photos are on the same volume. However, Aliases won't survive being moved from one volume to another. This is why experienced users on here recommend against using Referenced Libraries in general, and in particular when the library and files are on different volumes.
Try repair the aliases with an app like FileBuddy If that fails then I'm afraid you'll  need to do it manually for every photo in the Library, unfortunately.

  • Can't write to file when double-clicking jar...

This issue has me stumped. I have a jar dssetup.jar... The manifest looks like the following...
    Manifest-Version: 1.0
    Main-Class: DSsetUp
    Created-By: 1.3.0_02 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)
I also have a text file that I read and write to(this file is outside the jar):
    datasource.txt
If I execute my jar from the command line, I can read and write to the file...no problem. However, if I double click my jar to run it, I can read the text file but cannot write to the text file. Has anyone seen this before?
    Thanks

    It is true ..
you can not write anything to .jar file directly..
.jar file is not a common file, it is compressed.
the following tool give you some cue.
tool named JavaJar(written by java) can compress and decompress jar, war, ear and.zip...
    may download from http://www.qwerks.com/download/4114/JavaJar.zip
the tool is very verygood tool.
but the homepage(www.pivotonic.com) of JavaJar cannot be accessed.

You can't merge Apple IDs.  You also can't cancel (delete) and existing ID, you can only choose to stop using it.
If your old ID was compromised and you can no longer access it, you'll have to contact Apple for assistance.  Go to https://expresslane.apple.com ; click 'See all products and services' at the bottom of the page. In the next page click 'More Products and Services, then 'Apple ID'. In the next page select 'Other Apple ID Topics' then then 'Apple ID account Security’.

  • Error when double clicking rdf file?

I'm using Reports 10g R2 on Windows XP Pro SP2. When I try to double click on a report file (ANMSC.rdf) the Report Builder starts, but doesn't open the report file. I get the following error:
Windows cannot find D:\ANMSC.rdf. Make sure you typedthe name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
Also, report files have a generic icon instead of the Oracle Reports icon.
Does anyone know why Oracle Reports can't open the file when double clicking?

I'm using Reports 9i and the same happens.

  • Access 2013: can't find language dll msain.dll when double-clicking acce-file in explorer

    Hi,
When I want to open an acce-file by double-clicking it in Windows explorer it get the error:
    'Can't find Language DLL msain.dll'
The strange thing (IMO) is that when I open the accde-file from within Access, it opens fine. Also clicking on the accde-file in the 'recent'-part of the pinned to the taskbar Access-icon, opens the file just fine.
    (Office 2013 - 32 bit on Windows 7 - 64 bit)
Anyone know a solution for this behaviour?

    Hi,
To the error massage, copy msain.dll from another computer and place inside the %installdir%/1033 folder.
If it's not work, I recommend you repair Access.

  • How to open each CS version file in its proper version program when double-clicked?

    Hello everyone,
This one is about the coexistence of Indesign CS4 and CS5.
In my company: I'm working with Indesign CS4, but a colleague is testing CS5 in real day-to-day works, and everyday I come across CS5 files that I need to correct, so I have CS5 installed too. Now, when I boot in the morning, and no Indesign program is open yet, whenever I double-click on an Indesign file, the system will open it with CS5, no matter if the file is CS4 or CS5. I find this quite annoying, of course. I want each version file to get open right away in the proper version of the program. I'd think this is happening to a lot of people, but I've been looking for the issue in the forums and haven't found anything.
Of course I'm using roundabouts like having my colleague write "_CS5" at the end of each file, put CS4 in my startup items (so that once the program is open, the issue works the other way around and any Indesign file opens just in CS4 when double-clicked…).
Also, all the Indesign files appear on the desktop as CS5 files
I would welcome any ideas on the subject, thanks!

Muchas gracias! really useful. I'm gonna try it.

  • Excel 2013 will not open file using double click

I have a problem with Excel 2013  running on Windows 7 Pro (64). When double clicking an Excel file from Windows Explorer  Excel launches but opens a blank worksheet and shows me an error message (german: sinngemäß: "die Weitergabe eines anderen
Programms ist gescheitert"). The only way to view the document is by opening Excel and browsing to the saved file.
I have read similar forum entries which address this problem in older versions of Excel. I have tried every solution but none of them worked.
I already added the registry setting for shell open and set the Ignore Other Applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) (unchcked).
The problem still persists. When I first installed Office 2013 it all worked fine. I believe the problem occured after installing Project 2013, but I am not quite sure about that. Reinstalling Excel did not help.
    I´d appreciate any help,
    Regards Stefan Hassel

    Hi,
    Check the following steps:
    1. Make sure that Excel is not running (exit the program).
    2. Click the Start button to displays the Start menu.
    3. From the Start menu, choose Run. Windows displays the Run dialog box.
    4. In the Open box, enter the full path name to your Excel program, followed by the /regserver switch. If the full path name includes spaces, surround the full path name by quote marks. The following is an example of what you can enter in the Open box
    (your path may be different):
         "c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /regserver
    •  Click OK.

  • MS Office files won't open directly when double-clicked in OS 9

    Hi, all.
On an upgraded Lombard, I have full legal versions of both MS Office 2001 on OS 9.2.2 and Office 2004 on OS X Panther 10.3.9. Opening Office files from within OS X works fine.
However, when booting into OS 9, I can't double-click to open any Office 2001 documents directly. What seems to happen is that Finder first locates the Office 2004 apps and then tells me that I need Mac OS X to be able to run those versions. I can drag the documents onto aliases of the appropriate Office applications, but that seems tedious. I haven't tried opening the files by starting Office 2001 from within OS X, because I have both native versions. Concerning possible application/extension conflicts, these are fresh installs of OS 9, OS X, and Office 2001 and 2004 (in that order) on a newly formatted hard drive.
What I've tried: I've fiddled with the File Exchange and Internet (Advanced tab) Control Panels, as well as downloading and configuring MuchoFileInfo, all to no avail. Going with my "finding one copy of Office first" theory (since in both versions each application is identically named and in nearly identical folder paths), I tried renaming the enclosing folders, hoping that re-alphabetizing would influence the search order. Still no luck. And of course I've tried resetting the PMU, zapping the PRAM, and rebuilding the Desktop. Of all these attempts, the only change I saw was that--after installing MuchoFileInfo--the documents properly displayed their Office 2001 icons, whereas before they only showed up as blank icons.
The closest thread I saw to my problem was archived as unanswered. (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1434134&tstart=0)
Is there any way to get Finder 9 to recognize the files as what they are? Thanks in advance.

    Hi, bobinski -
Is it better to keep them separate (for more reasons than this current problem)?
Some folk believe so. Reasons can include facilitating the re-install either OS, if needed, or to wipe just one away; and using disk repair utilities of various kinds and capabilities. One other effect resulting from partitioning - since each OS will be able to look in a smaller volume for a file it seeks, rather than looking in the entire drive, both OS's should run a bit snappier on a partitioned drive.
As far as how big each partition should be, well, that depends a bit on what use you put the machine to, how large the programs and the files you create with them are, etc.
In general, since OSX 10.3 and 10.4 do best when given 5GB of free space to use, allowing a minimum of about 8GB just for OSX is one figure; adding in additional space for programs and files depends upon what you have.
OS 9 does not need as much space - the OS itself needs less than 0.5GB, and its programs are probably smaller.
Given a hard drive size of 20GB, I would project a partitioning scheme of about 12 to 15GB for OSX, the rest for OS 9.
The first partition (the topmost one in the formatting utility's schematic) will be the fastest one. Which one that should be is your call, based on which you consider to be your prime OS now, and which you expect it will be in the future of that machine. It may not make any real difference, compared to similar effects between the first and last partitions on a multi-partition 120GB drive.
You can use either OS 9's Drive Setup or OSX's Disk Utility to do the partitioning. Some comments -
    • If you use OSX's Disk Utility, as Denis stated be sure to select the option to install OS 9 drivers.
    • Select Mac OS Extended as the format.
    • Partitioning an unpartitioned drive will erase everything on it, so before proceeding with partitioning be sure you have backed up anything you do not want to lose.

  • Excel 365 still won't open files by double clicking!

I know this issue has been posted before but, unlike many, I've started with a clean slate - a brand new machine running Windows 7 Professional SP1. The only Office product I've installed is 365. Like most others, I can open Word and PowerPoint files by
double clicking but Excel refuses point blank to play ball. I get the "Problem sending data to the program" error.
I've tried the multitude of "fixes" spread around the forum and the net - to the extent that I can't remember which I've already done when I come across them - and nothing changes.
Surely (?) someone at Microsoft must have picked up that there is a real problem here, affecting a multitude of users. So why isn't there a unified fix available? Let me put that another way, does anyone know of a unified fix that's available all in one
    place?

    Hi,
I have definitely heard your frustration, we can try these methods to check if it works.
Is that error message “There was a problem sending the command to the program”? If so, we can
turn off the “Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)” setting. Run “Fix it for Windows 7”.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/211494/en-au
On the other hand, maybe this problem is not in Excel, it is in Windows.  We need to associate the file type with
    corresponding program:
Right-click the Office       file that you want to open.
Select Open with,       then click Choose default program.
Select the appropriate       program to associate with the file, click to select the
Always use the       selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click
    OK.
Next, if the issue still exists, we can choose Run and enter Excel.exe /regserver .This will cause Excel to start up, re-register all of its registry keys, then quit. Now, try opening your Excel files.
    Feel free to post back.

  • 2013 excel won't open when double clicked

    Hello,
I am using window's 7. I am having an issue with excel. An excel file will not open when double clicked.
    Thank you,

    Hi,
Does this issue happen to a certain Excel file or all Excel files?
If this only happen to a certain Excel file, where is the file stored? We may try to open a blank Excel file, and then open the certain Excel file via File > Open and then navigate to the file to see the result.
If this issue happens to all Excel files, please go to Task Manager, click Processes tab and make sure Excel.exe is not listed there. If Excel.exe is listed, end the process and then try to opening Excel file to see the result.
If above doesn't fix the issue, we may also try to
run a repair of your Office installation to see the result. It seems that the method fixed a similar issue for a number of users according to another thread.
Please have a try and let me know the result.
