Excel doesn't open .txt files automatically

Until 10 minutes ago Excel opened downloaded .txt files, now Itunes pops open when I try open the downloaded .txt file. I have no idea how idea how I did this, any help reversing this would be great.
Thanks,
Rush

Hi Rush,
What about other programs or files types? According to your description, the issue seems related with the default program or files association, please launch control panel\Default Programs\Associate a file type or protocol with a program, then scroll down
to find .txt, make sure that its default program is Notepad.
Or you can simply right click the txt file, then click "Openwith" choose Notepad.

  • Excel 2007 throws "this action is valid for the products which are currently installed" while i try to open .txt file format.

    Hello,
We have Windows 2008 r2 TS, on which we have MS office 2007 Standard installed. There are almost 50 users on this particular machine.
The problem is we get an error message when we try to open a .txt file in Excel (Right click on .txt file--> Open with --> Excel). Error message is as follows  "this action is valid for the products which are currently installed".
Previously this was faced by all users so we completely reinstalled it, which worked, except for 1 user.  Currently i have recreated the profile for that particular user but that also didn't helped.
A drag-drop approach works but user don't want it that way.
Now am clueless in terms of where should i look into. Any help would really be helpful.
    Thanks,

If you've opened notepad, you won't be able to save the file ON the server, so your question doesn't make sense.  Please search, read a book, SAP documentation etc. before posting further basic questions.

  • Quicktime doesn't open AVI file with Perian installed

I have installed Perian but Quicktime X doesn't open AVI files for a week. I have repaired permissions. But Quicktime only plays the AVI file if I reboot the Mac. VLC always plays the file. The AVI codec is XVID. Quicktime doesn't play other formats such as FLV. I have deleted .plist files, com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist. I have found other files(com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist.0GH3f31, com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist.0h9MBzV...) that I deleted also. Any idea? Thanks

And now ... surprisingly I view AVI files in Quicktime without Perian.
QT has very limited AVI support (file type and a few older codecs) built in. Most common codecs use by Windows users, however, require the additional support provided by Perian. If the AVI files are now playing in QT without Perian, then simply check the Inspector, Properties, or Info window to see which codecs are in your AVI file and you should be able to tell if they are among those supported "natively" by QT. Also note that this regaining of the ability to play your files may indicate a component conflict of some sort may have existed previously.

  • Adobe Reader doesn't open .pdf files anymore. Error: 213:11.

Adobe Reader doesn't open .pdf files anymore. It's written Error: 213:11. Details: laptop with Windows XP, Adobe Reader X

Are these local or online documents?  If online, in what browser?  If local, does the documents folder and docs themselves have sufficient permissions?
Is there anything else beside the number 213:11?

  • Since Lion, text edit can't open txt files

Since upgrading to Lion on my 2.4 Ghz iMac, TextEdit won't open .txt files (even ones it has just created). I get the following error message: The document “[filename].txt” could not be opened. TextEdit cannot open files of this type.
When Lion was first installed, it was opening my .txt file with Console, until I told it to use TextEdit. Now I get the error above. The files are fine (they work on other computers, word, console, etc)
I know I can download a different (and possibly better) text editor, but I like TextEdit and also am worried that this is a symptom of a deeper issue.
So far, I've restarted and repaired all permissions on My HD. Not sure what could be causing this as reading .txt files is pretty essential to TextEdit.

I guess my installation got messed up by chance: I reinstalled Lion and things seem to be working well now. Not sure what the problem was.

  • File hyperlink doesn't open link file, says 'No permission'

    Hi,
I have created some pdf file links in Evernote and when try to open them systems says "The file __ couldnt be opened because you dont have permission". I am the only user on my mac(OS 10.8.3) with admin privilege and checked all permissions it is "Read/Write" for me. Also all those files were created by me.
But when I open the file manually in preview and close the window (Not Preview application), and then click the hyperlink it opens it. So I am not sure what to do, apparently these file links does not work when document is not opened by preview application.
I also have a hyperlink for a document (Pages) but that opens perfectly fine.
I searched in community forum and someone suggested to repair file permissions using disk utility. I tried all that but no results.
Please help and thank you .

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Excel doesn't open in portal

    Hi,
by opening an excel file in the portal, there first comes a pop up window, where you can open or save the file. But when you choose the button "open", the excel file doesn't open anyway.
When I navigate to the iView a second time, nothing happens - no pop up message and unfortunately no excel file...
Does somebody know how to solve this problem?
    Thanks,
    Lydia

    Hi,
thank you very much for your answers.
Mahesh, your answer was very helpful for another problem we had. Because we wanted to display our documents embedded in the portal area. There was a setting to exactly do that.
But our problem with the excel files is, that you can open it the first time, but when you want to open it a second time, nothing happens anymore. We found out, that the excel file is still open, although it is closed in the portal (you can see that in the task manager --> Processes). When we close it in the task manager, the excel file can be opened again without any errors.
In fact of that, we don't have any macro problems.
We also didn't generate any code. We are using an url iView to display the excel files from another sap r/3 system in portal.
There you can generate an url for each file of the sap r/3 system and put it in the url iView. This works fine with every file type we have, but not with excel.
Any other ideas to solve this problem?
    Regards,
    Lydia

  • Filemaker exported Excel doesn't open properly

I've got a Filemaker database that I "Export Records" or "Save Send Records As" data in Excel format. When i open the file in Excel it is all correct, but when I open the xls file in Numbers 2.0.3 it doesn't open properly. You can see the discrepancies in these 2 screenshots.
First the Excel file , beside it is the Numbers rendering of the same file. You can see around A:16 it goes off, again at A:25 and then some repeating at the end to fill up the row. Column B however is correct in Numbers.
    !http://rdiv.com/screenshots/FilemakerExportExcel.png! !http://rdiv.com/screenshots/FilemakerExportNumbers.png!
The strange thing is if I save the Excel file then it opens in Numbers correctly. If I export as CSV it opens in Numbers correctly.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    jim

Thinking it's a FMPro issue (I have posted this in the bugs forum at FM.com) I've repeated this experiment with the data records sorted differently (to see if it's any particular record that is the problem). The export still is wrong when opened in Numbers, the mistakes appear to be in the same rows, i.e., row 16, row25, etc.,

  • Why my quicktime pro doesn't open .rtf files?

    Hi!
I am trying to create subtitles to video files using quicktime pro 7; I have a macbook pro with mac os x 10.6.8.  Every tutorial I find says to open text file in  quicktime, however my quicktime player pro doesn't do that. It says "file is not a movie file" and doesn't play it at all. How do I solve it, please?
    Cheers,

QuickTime Player Pro can only import "plain text" (.txt) files.

  • Safari doesn't open PHP files

If i try to open a PHP file in safari, it shows the code. If the PHP file isn't local, for example, on a local website (using air sharing on my ipod touch and adding php files to it), it will download the file. If I open it there, it will only display the codes like it does on the original file on my mac. I'm trying to use wordpress but it doesn't work. Once I think i saw some of the page working (it was the login page and it was PHP). But i've tried everything i could do but it never worked again. Please help me! Thanks!

You don't open PHP files in Safari.
Safari doesn't know how to run PHP code so it just displays the file content.
You need to run them under a web server - the web server runs the code and outputs the appropriate content.
By default, on Mac OS X you start up the built-in web server (System Preferences -> Sharing -> Personal Web Sharing) and should place the files in /Library/WebServer/Documents/
You then access them in Safari via something like:
    http://localhost/my.php
