Excel into InDesign

I have an excel document that I want to put into InDesign. There are 200 entries, each in their own cells.
I want the InDesign formatting to end up looking like this: (all 200 entries on their own lines and all on one page)
<<TIME>>......<<NAME>>
<<TIME>>......<<NAME>>
<<TIME>>......<<NAME>>
<<TIME>>......<<NAME>>
<<TIME>>......<<NAME>>
<<TIME>>......<<NAME>>
<<TIME>>......<<NAME>>
Is there a way to do this with datamerge? Or is there another preffered method?
Please ask any questions you need to

I don't see a reason not to do it with Data Merge, if you want to. Set the placeholder for the time, then a right indent tab (Shift + Tab) and then the placeholder for the name.  I prefer a custom underline applied to the tab over the leader -- much more flexibility for weight and positioning.
Do a multiple records per page merge.
The disadvantage here is that each line will be in its own text frame.

Third-party plugins for InDesign can automate the process. Here's a thread from InDesignSecrets.com forums:

  • Placing Named Ranges from Excel into InDesign

    InDesign CS3 5.0.4, Excel 2003, Windows XP.
I have placed named ranges from Excel into InDesign and linked them. The Excel file consists of multiple worksheets. I go back now a few months later to update the files. I go to place a couple of new ranges from new worksheets and they don't show up under the correct sheet. ALL my named ranges now show up under the first worksheet only.
    Anybody ever had this happen?
    JAG

I've upgraded to CS5.5. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred placing named ranges into InDesign from Excel works fine. One time out of a hundred I still see all my named ranges on the first worksheet and none on the rest of the worksheets where I originally named them.
I save the Excel files as XLS.
Am I the only one in the universe having this problem?
    Can I get an answer?

  • Excel chart into InDesign - resolution problem

Hello, I am working on a Mac OS 10.8.3 and using InDesign CS6
I have to place a chart that was created in Excel into InDesign and I realize there is a resolution problem if we start to print.
Would you suggest I create the chart using an Adobe product? I am just trying to save time, but I'm afraid that may be the only answer.
I have a screen shot below of kind of what it looks like. I have about 25 of these.
    Thank you.

I tried pasting the chart from Word into Excel and then I dragged that chart into Illustrator and then copied into InDesign. Probably used an extra step there, but..
I went to this site for help too; http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/import-excel-data-charts-graphs.html
The text comes in a little funny, but I redid the text boxes and I was able to get in and edit some of the elements.
    Thank you!

  • Import Excel Curve into InDesign??

Is there a reasonably simple way to import or place curves created in Excel into InDesign?  My client has created a spreadsheet in Excel, with a series of data points, then generated a performance curve (also in Excel) for some equipment.  It is a standard, smoothed, linear curve created in Excel from the data points.  I don't need the grid, labels, etc, just the curve, so I can make sure the data is accurate in the final InDesign piece.
I'm using IDCS4 on a Mac, OSX 10.5.8. Any suggestions are welcome.  Up to now, I am drawing them with the pen tool, but accuracy can suffer.
    Thanks,
    Lou Dina

I have usually saved my excel-stuff as PDF and placed into InDesign... but it´s not editable then... Bob´s suggestion is good if you have to get it in editable form...
Copy/pasting curves from office has sometimes been little tricky, curves has become clumpy or jagged etc...
may be those problems are gone with the office 2007...? And you can alway create a pdf in excel, open that pdf in Illustrator and drag your objects to indesign from there...

  • Excel to InDesign Merging?

    Hi Everyone,
I don't know if I am posting this in the right area, but I just thought it might be a scripting solution it needs.
I have been asked to design a property catalog for various properties up and down the country. I have been doing this manually, placing the images into a table layout, adding the description, price, area, etc underneath each image. These images are about 50mm by 50mm. If you think of autotrader for cars, similar to that.
My problem now is that it has now taken off and I have over 500 properties that need to be inputted. I have the information in an excel spreadsheet and I was wondering is there a way of automating the data from excel into InDesign so that I don't have to keep manually typing everything in? I have looked at datamerge, but it seems very restrictive. Is there a plug-in or script I could use?
Any help at all would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Since scripts can do almost anything, your question is very underspecified. Why not tell us exactly what restrictions of Data Merge bother you?

  • Excel file into InDesign document

I am planning on making our price list in InDesign so I easily can make it "nicer" than in Excel.
Today we have it all in an Excel file but how do I go about putting this info in InDesign? I want the Excel file to be the "origin", if I need to change the prices etc, I want to make them in the Excel file and then relink it to InDesign - if that's possible, that is...
I want it in A5 format, should the Excel file also be made in A5 then?
Today the price list is in one Excel Book and then separated into different pages (if that is the correct word for it, I have Excel in Swedish!). Is that OK or should I just make one long list with all the products.
I tried making an InDesign doc in size A5 and then an Excel file in the size of A5. But when importing the Excel file into InDesign it looked really weird! Numbers came as red dots and all the info didn't fit.
    What did I do wrong!?
I'd appreciate all the help I could get! Maybe you know how to do this or where I can read more about it. I'm not that good at InDesign, still consider myself as a beginner...
    Thanks!

    Emma,
Have you gotten any further with your question? I am in the process of updating our pricing information and I am laying our pricers out in InDesign so that I can make them look "nicer" also. I have been doing research on linking Excel files to InDesign and it has come in very handy. There are some issues I have run into, however, which were mentioned in some of the other responses you have gotten.
First of all, your Excel info isn't coming in correctly because of formatting issues. When you place and link an Excel file, you can indicate what sheet you want to place and even a named range or cell range of that sheet. You can also indicate in that options window whether you want it to be placed as an unformatted table, formatted table or unformatted tabbed text. You will want to choose formatted or unformatted table depending on how you want your InDesign file to look. You can do all of the formatting for your table in Excel and place it as a formatted table, which works o.k., but you will have to deal with a couple of adjustments after you place the file. Your text probably won't show up because of the default settings for the indents of the cells in a table in InDesign. All you have to do for that is double click in your text box and select the whole table. Then you can right click or go to the Table menu and choose Cell Options. Set the Top and Bottom Cell Insets to 0, I usually set my vertical justification to center while I am at it. You could also adjust the row heights to make the text fit.
A wonderful tool to use is a plug in for InDesign by Teacup called TableStyles and CellStyles. I recently discovered this and have started trying to work with it. I came across it by looking around online for information and discussions much like this one. I discovered that we already had this plugin in our program files, but it was not in the correct spot to be able to use the function when I was in InDesign. I had to move the plugins from a Teacup folder within my PlugIns folder. They need to be in the PlugIns folder under Tables.
At any rate, I know I am on the right path, but I am running into a few snags that I haven't been able to find any information on yet. It is best to place the Excel files as unformatted tables when you plan to use the TableStyles and CellStyles to do your formatting, but I have found that it seems as though linking to separate sheets and ranges becomes an issue when you want to update a link. It doesn't keep the sheet and range information you indicated when you first placed the file....? Haven't dug up any information on that yet.
I hope at least some of this is helpful, sorry for rambling on, I just was going through the same thing and wish I had found out about these plugins, etc. sooner. :)

  • Excel/word graphics into indesign nightmare

    Hello,
i'm having a hell of time trying to import excel/word(embedded excel with anotations) charts into indesign(like barcharts, pie charts, etc).
They get pasted as an image(when the original is part vector, part image, part text) always with random sizes that when i resize them to fit the page text and graph always looks terrible due to what looks like a very crude linear scaling(haven't found any other option to use a proper lanczos resize/resample) thus graphs end up looking like crap really, and it's extremelly time consuming
so, how do you people do this?, do you maybe paste it into something intermediate that maintains proper text/graph metadata?, i mean, people that make technical boosk(or excel manuals maybe) in indesign how do they do them?!

the "place PDF" method has worked perfectly!, thanks A LOT!
and yes, it will require some retooling of every graph but i've reduced the steps to the minimum necessary per graph to optimize the workflow and it's not very cumbersome(at least not compared to having to redo/transfer tables, urgh those really take a lot of time).
A lot of the issues is because the source material was done in A4 size, including graphs, and now in ID i'm working with a much smaller "book size" so you can imagine that when i transfer huge graphs and need to downsize them, the vectors are somewhat ok, but text went to lalala-land
Now i've made an intermediate word file with the same sheet size as ID so i resize and retool there, export to PDF selection and thus i only need a small amount of placement/content adjustment(mostly to kill the white fill areas) in ID.
one hting i've noticed is that ID is now complaning about missing fonts in ALL of the placed PDFs, and they're normal system fonts(double checked and i do have them), on Word i have the option to embed fonts(no subset) but NOT common system fonts!, yet the imported data seems perfectly fine, what's going on?, do i need to fully incrust ALL fontsin every pdf?

  • Excel graphs into InDesign

I want to insert my results into InDesign and they are currently displayed as an Excel graph. Direct copy and paste doesn't allow me to resize the graph. Not sure what to do?

Why can't you resize it? I've done this before myself and had no problem...

  • Importing tables with linked cell data from excel to indesign

    Hey,
I'm designing a catalog and have been linking the tables in InDesign from a spreadsheet in excel. In my spreadsheet, I am linking cells from a master sheet to another sheet so that I when I update the information on one sheet, it will update throughout the spreadsheet.
Now that I have the linked cells set up in my spreadsheet, I've inputed the tables into InDesign but: the table cells in InDesign containing linked cells from within the spreadsheet do not appear.
I've gone through all the import table options in InDesign and cannot find a way to make it work.
Does anyone have an answer or input?
    Thanks,
    KT

When we are updating the excel sheet it automatically updates the link in InDesign and it's continually changing. Does CSV break the links in excel or does it keep them and allows InDesign to read the linked cells as well?
    Thanks for your response!

  • Linking data from PDF form into Indesign CS6

    Hello all,
I'll be working on a magazine which has a large section of day camps technical descriptions :
name, contact info, location, short introduction text, activities icons (they have to choose up to 5 icons from a total of 12)
Is it possible to link data from a fillable PDF into predetermined and prestyled text boxes in Indesign CS6?
Would it be necessary to export in an Excel sheet prior?
What would be the best trick in order for the icons to place themselves automatically, if possible?
    Thanks in advance

When placing a PDF into InDesign, it's a flat piece of art for each page included. There's no way to manipulate form fields or work with links or anything like that.
The data from the form would have to be collected and converted into an Excel file for placing into InDesign. (Collecting data from PDF forms and converting the Excel format can be done in Acrobat Pro.)

  • Most efficient way to import data from Excel to InDesign?

    Hi all,
I'm designing a college prospectus which includes 400+ course listings. At the moment, these listings exist as a vast Excel sheet with fields like course type, course code, description etc.
I'm familiar with importing Excel data into InDesign and formatting tables/creating table styles and such, but the problem I'm having is that the data is in multiple columns per course in the Excel sheet, but will be arranged in one column per course with multiple rows in the InDesign document. I can't seem to find a way to easily convert these columns into rows.
Can anyone help me with an efficient way to get the data into the layout without laborious copying and pasting or formatting?
    Many thanks in advance!

  • Office 2010 Excel and InDesign CS2

For a number of years, I have been placing Excel tables and graphs into InDesign by turning them into PDFs.
I was able to correctly size the tables/graphs by doing a "Copy as Picture" in Excel and directly pasting into InDesign prior to creating the PDF.
We recently updated to Office 2010 and its version of Excel, and now the "Copy as Picture" step no longer accurately represents the sizing of the PDF.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I'm having some trouble getting my arms around the fact that you'd spend money on MS Office upgrade but you're still sitting there with CS2.
Tables in Excel can be placed directly into ID using the file place command. The graphs will need a different route and PDF is as good as any if you don't need to make changes. If you want better results, copy/paste them to Illustrator, save as AI and place that.
I don't think CS2 can handle the XLSX format. You'll need to save back to XLS. Another issue with sticking with CS2 is that it's unsupported under newer operating systems and can be even more troublesome on 64 bit system.
You might want to consider an upgrade to CS5. CS2 is the earliest version eligible for upgrade pricing and if you wait too long you'll be looking at paying full price. If you're running the suite, make sure you look at the right package. There are several upgrade choices. http://amzn.to/alf9eu is the Design Premium upgrade.

  • Importing interaction into InDesign

I understand that the Captivate 7 interaction must first be put into Edge Animate and saved as OAM file before importing it into InDesign, but I don't know how to import a Captivate interaction into Edge Animate. If anyone knows steps for how to do this I'd greatly appreciate it.

I don't think that's true. I don't know if you can save the interaction by itself but you certainly can save the Captivate file after you get it working and import it into InDesign.
Can you tell us exactly what you're trying to do? In the meantime, check out this blog post from Pooja...it's excellent:
