Excel Locks up/Freezes PC unpredictably

I have a user who has been experiencing an issue for quite some time with Excel and we have not been able to track down the cause or a fix to it.
Excel will lock up and crash with what seems to be completely random frequency. Below are the details.
Windows 7 32bit
Office 2010
-It happens with different spreadsheets
-It happens with both .xls and .xlsx
-It can happen when opening, saving, working within a spreadsheet, or in a different program all together
-Other people use the same spreadsheets and do not experience the issue
-The only correspondence to the crashes in the Event Viewer are multiple "Office Software Protection Platform Service" events
-The issue is experienced with local files, filed saved on the network, and blank/unsaved workbooks
-The PC is connected to a domain
I have done the following:
-Repaired Microsoft Office
-Re-installed Microsoft Office
-Disabled all Add-ons
-Ran Office Products in safe mode
-Re-created the users profile, both from scratch and using the Windows Easy Transfer tool
-Replaced the users PC entirely
-Edited the registry key that controls the frequency of "Office Software Protection Platform Service"
-Set the "Office Software Protection Platform" service to automatic
-Verified that Office 2010 Product Key information was correct
-Set Excel.exe to "Run as Administrator"
-Disabled Protected View
-Used a different printer/print drivers
-Cleared the "Recently Used" list
-Deleted the files in Appdata\Roaming\Excel
As you can see I have done a lot and have gotten nowhere, the user still reports the issue happening. Sometimes upwards of 8 times a day. This has caused the user to lose a lot of work that wasn't recoverable. Any suggestions about what else to try or where
to look?

re:  more excel crashing
Well you asked about other ideas so...
1. Turn off Auto-Save
2. Turn off file-sharing
3. Locate the XLSTART directory, move everything there someplace else.
4. You disabled all add-ins, but does that include Com add-ins and the other flavors.
5. Does the user have an anti-virus app installed - disable it.
6. Doug Robbins (Word MVP) has an exhaustive list of problems/solutions for crashes in Office 2013.
There will be overlap with Office 2010...

7. Don't know anything about it, but another idea ...

Originally, I thought it was due to 800+ files in the trash, however, I removed all but 5 photo files from the trash and it continues to lock up.  Inititally the "progress" bar would get to about 1/2 way and then it would stop and stall.  However, now the progress bar no longer shows a progress line it immediately freezes and locks up. Can anyone help?

  • How to read an Excel "~$" Lock File in VBA?

When Excel opens a Workbook for possible updating it creates a temporary hidden file in the same folder as the document being opened:  its file-name is the same as the workbook but with the special characters "~$" in front.
This Excel "Lock File" contains the name of the person who has the Excel Workbook document open.
If another User attempts to open the (already open) Excel workbook they get a warning message advising opening it as read-only and nominating the current user of the file.
An Excel "Lock File" can be copied using Windows Explorer and that copy can be subsequently opened in the NotePad application.
The "Lock file" is automatically deleted by Excel when the workbook is closed.
Whilst it is possible in VBA to confirm the existence of an Excel "Lock File" (indicating that the workbook you want to open is presently in use for possible updating) - but HOW CAN YOU USE VBA TO READ IT'S CONTENTS?
All help and advise will be very gratefully accepted.
    Paul J

    Hi Paul J,
We can't open the temp file to read when the Excel file is opened. It is locked by the Excel process. But it's possible to make a copy of the temp file, then read it in VBA code. But why do you want to read this file? It's not supposed to be opened by other
    applications actually.
If you just want to check which user is using this Excel file, you could try this method(not tested, from net):
Function GetFileOwner(fileName As String) As String
    Dim secUtil As Object
    Dim secDesc As Object
    Dim File_Shortname As String
    Dim fileDir As String
    File_Shortname = Dir(fileName)
    fileDir = Left(fileName, InStr(1, fileName, File_Shortname) - 1)
    Set secUtil = CreateObject("ADsSecurityUtility")
    Set secDesc = secUtil.GetSecurityDescriptor(fileDir & File_Shortname, 1, 1)
    GetFileOwner = secDesc.owner
    End Function

  • WRVS4400N Lock Up / Freeze

In the last couple weeks my router has begun to lock up / freeze.  Not sure the appropriate terminology to use for this.  The end result is wireless and wired connections stop functioning.  I can't connect to the routers web interface via wired.  I can't connect to any of the wireless SIDs.  The router just doesn't respond.  When I look at the router the lights are still blinking, but nobody seems to be home.  I have to unplug the router and do a 30 count and plug it back in to get it to return to working order.
At the time that this first occurred I mad not made any changes to the device in months, if not longer.  Was running great.  Not sure what happened.
Is anyone else experiencing this?  Has anyone else solved this problem?
Any thoughts or suggestions anyone might have would be very helpful.
    Thank you in advance.
    -Steven

Hi Steven, PPTP vpn did have a completely failure on the older firmwares about 2 years ago.
SSL VPN is a touchy subject. Not because the router fails at it but because most people do not understand that computer operating systems make things difficult. SSL VPN is a pretty sore subject for all vendors...
But to affirm, the SSL VPN works just fine, especially if you know how to set root on MAC or if you know how to stop the Windows features from blocking it...My opinion is most people are unhappy they can't simply set something up and it works and then calls the router a piece of junk because their computers are blocking features or an inadequate understanding to make it work.
Windows 8 is not heavily tested or documented yet but I imagine that will also have a number of belly aches if there isn't already especially with all of the browser integrations... (sigh)
I'm not up to par on the IPV6 limitations. That's something that won't be too well experienced until IPV6 is forced upon us.

  • Lock up / freeze RESOLVED (see final post)

Inserting/ejecting a CD or DVD (especially a blank rewritable) occasionally causes PC lock up/freeze.
No cursor, no nothing;  reboot required.  No error message.  No event error.   ASUS P8P67le,  I7-2600K
For the first time in a long while a freeze occurred today while NOT using either optical drive.
The machine was idle with Thunderbird mail on-screen.  When I turned back to it, it was frozen.

    Hi,
Please make sure to that it is not a “dirty” CD, and you already have the latest update of drivers
You can also try safe mode to eliminate some drivers conflicts.
Windows Startup Settings (including safe mode)

I also wonder whether you can use Task Manager after the PC freeze, press Ctrl+Alt+Del, lunch Task manager, then view if there are abnormal information.

  • ITunes Locks Up/Freezes

Any ideas on fixing iTunes with Windows 7 64-bit. Constantly locks-up, freezes on me.
I figured it was from running my iTunes library on a NAS. But then I localized it as well. It's ridiculous. I can't even use iTunes anymore.

Log on? Log onto the computer?  iTunes itself doesn't have a log on unless you are automatically trying to connect to some service that requies it such as buying items from the store.  Do you really mean log on?

  • IQ506 Constant lock ups/freezes

Had the computer a little over a year now it started intermittingly freezeing about 3 months after we got it. Some thing I just kinda dealt with. It since then has become more and more frequent, to the point where the only way it wil run smoothly now is if I run it in safe mode with networking so I am able to get one the internet. I sat down last night and figured I would took a crack at it, I wne t through an A+ certification class a while back and am pretty familiar with computers. have run a msconfig and stopped a good bit of startups and that seemed to help a bit but it still freeeze a couple time a hour in normal mode. Have turned the power option to high making the performance better again seemed to help a bit. I also dicovered last night that most of the window updates have failed. I am running windows vista 64 bit SP1.  I attempted to install SP2 last night but was unbale. Seemed to have froze up on me mid install. I am almost sure that I am going to go get a external harddrive to backup all my data and do a system restore to factory, than install a new bios. My step daughter is on this thing all the time and i am constantly deleting programs, could this also be a culprit, virus maybe???? I have Norton anti virus installed and it is working fine.
Any suggestions or help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated. I have been reading other posts and taken some of there suggestions and tried but had no luck

I have the same issue.  The computer seems to always 'lock up' in Internet Explorer at random times (but at least several times a day).   I can close the program with the task manager but the problem remains; also cannot reboot the computer using the Start button menu.  Other programs such as word seem unaffected.  When my handy-dandy HP Health Check suggests a critical update and I try to install it, I get the error message: "Error occurred While Handling Message."
In the end I have to hold down the manual power button until the computer shuts down.  Then upon restart the problem goes away for awhile until it locks up again.
This may be my last HP computer,,, my old Toshiba Laptop XP runs IE great.  Any ideas out there?

  • 3rd Gen Lock Ups / Freezes during everyday use

My 3rd Gen Click Wheel iPod has developed a freeze issue, where I'll be playing a song and suddenly the ipod locks up and none of the controls respond.
To try and fix this I've restored the ipod, zero formatted the drive (disk utility says all is fine) and then put 2gb of music on it to test.
I still get the same issue arising pretty much every time I use it now. Luckily, more often and not the click wheel doesn't respond, but the buttons at least do and I can re-boot the ipod to get it to respond. When I get totally locked out, I have to wait until it goes into sleep of drains the battery.
Battery life is still good as this is a late 3rd gen model. What gives? This happens to songs encoded by the latest version of itunes as well as older versions. The software is up to date to correct 'bug fixes', but is there a way of forcing the ipod to upgrade its software in case the ipod software has become trashed?
    Any help/suggestions please.

Well no answers but looks like it could possibly be a disk fragmentation issue. Diskwarrior showed 77% fragmentation of the iPod. Once I set it to work, the iPod changes tracks much more quickly.
    Hopefully that's sorted it...

  • Edits to video or audio causing computer lock up freeze

I've been away from FCE video editing for a while, back to it with a simple project. Having problem where the whole computer will lock up when I try to move clips or adjust audio clip lengths. It will EVENTUALLY honor my action. One time it took 14 minutes, one time 10 minutes. I can tell because the clock stops, I can't do anything on the computer except move the mouse. I have to either wait or power off the computer.
I went back in the posts to mid-May, didn't see anything referencing this kind of problem. Was there something in a QT or OS X 10.4.? release that is causing this?
I tried deleting preferences, I tried the spotlight fix - making my FCE Documents folder hidden from Spotlight. I'm running 10.4.9 on a 1.8 single G5.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. This is taking forever!

    1.8 single G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I'm using FCE HD 3.0. I'm using QT 7.1.6. I'm using OS X System version 10.4.9 (8P135). Nothing appears under Software Update.
The media is an export from an iPhoto slideshow. It exported as a .mov file, I didn't pick any unusual options.
I discovered that I can move a clip forward 1.0 seconds (29 frames) and it won't freeze. It freezes at the 1.23 second mark - consistently.
I have managed to finish my project by subdividing it into smaller sequences, and making 1.0 second edits in those sequences. And saving after every move.
However, I have a couple more projects coming up, and want to get to the bottom of this issue. I will experiment with some media coming right off my camcorder, and see if I have the same problems. I will report back.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions ...

  • Lock screen freeze

    HI. I'm using iPhone 5s (IOS 8.1.2)
It has been started a few days ago that I just simply can't swip to unlock.
there's no such a freezing while using apps but only on lock screen.
home button or lock button still works but on the screen to swip.
aand after I lock n unlock, it works. Almost every time I need to do this way to unlock my phone.
It seems minor but one thing is I cant answer calls since i can't swip on the screen.
I tried to do almost everything to fix (restart, force restart, reset, etc) but still can't
i have never dropped or water damaged.
Pls help me to fix this. thank you

  • Mail merge from Word to Excel locks the excel document

Previously, a friend of mine would run his business like this:
Open a client database (excel file), open N number of word docs that were mail merge docs to the excel file.  He could then make changes to the excel file and see those changes reflected in real time in the opened word mail merge documents.  He
could also save the excel document while the word docs were open without problem.
Now, changes to excel are not shown in word, and saving the excel doc while the word mail merge documents are open produces a sharing violation (winword has a handle on the excel file).
I've reproduced his problems.  We are both using Office 2010, and Windows 7.
I've tested turning off indexing on the files, and also tried disabling my anti virus.
If I save the excel file as a 97-2003 file (.xls), then I don't have most of these issues.
Is there anyway to avoid the file lock when using the excel document as a 2010 xlsx?  Why would it work fine if I connect to an old document, but not work with the 2010 version?

I have a similar problem, which might be related. I use an Excel 2010 spreadsheet (.xlsx) as a data source to mail merge with document templates (.dotx) in Word 2010. I can save changes to the Excel spreadsheet without any problems until open a Word template
and try to use the Excel spreadsheet as the data source (Mailings -> Select Recipients -> Using Existing List). Two problems occur when I run that merge. First, any recent changes to the spreadsheet don't appear in the document templates. Second, Excel
throws error messages when I try to save the spreadsheet. Specifically:
    1. Excel tells me that "Your changes could not be saved to '[FILENAME].xlsx' because of a sharing violation. Try saving to a different file."
    2. When I click OK, it tries to save the spreadsheet to a randomly-named file without an extension, and tells me "The file you are trying to open, '53F11100' (or some other seemingly-random file name) is in a different format than specified by the file extension.
Verify that the file is not corrupted and is from a trusted source before opening the file. Do you want to open the file now?" Excel gives me a yes/no option, either requires me to resave the file under a different name.
At this point, I can only save the spreadsheet under a different file name unless I close out of MS Office 2010 entirely, make a duplicate of the spreadsheet using Windows, and begin using the new copy instead of the old. I'm using Windows Vista SP2, and don't
recall any specific action on my part prompting this change, but it began happening in the last few weeks. Any guidance would be a huge help.
    Thanks in advance,
    Prescott

  • DW Locks or Freezes when Inserting Flash

Lately, I have noticed that DW 8.0.2 locks up or freeze/slows
down the computer for several minutes when I insert/change any
flash content. I have tried with Flashpaper insertions/changes and
flash buttons. There is a support document on this issue, but it
does not list DW 8 as one of the version it covers. Any
    ideas?

DW is crashing more and more - and it only seems to be
happening when i am in design mode, and trying to modify anywhere
where a flash file exists. example, i typed a line under a flash
graphic and tried to make the text a hyperlink. As i typed in the
    link url DW froze.
Now, editing the same information using code view it worked
fine with no crash. When I went back to change the url in design
mode it locked (this was a test). The locking also happens when I
drag any flash element anywhere in design mode. I am wondering if
it is just time to re-install DW.
Can DW be re-installed on top of itself? If not, what files
would i need to backup to keep all my sites (links to sites, ftp
    info etc).

  • IMovie locks up, freezes

Ever since I loaded the new iMove software about a year and a half ago, my iMovie software has been failing. I never had a problem with the original iMovie format, and my brother-in-law has no problems with his NEW iMovie software.
I can load pictures into it, and music. But after that, the entire program locks up. It "scrolls" through pictures, but the visual never changes from the very first picture in the series. The shape of the photo changes to match the next photo in the series, which is somewhat odd. The fan in the computer starts running very high and it stays there. It doesn't slow down, the computer doesn't do anything. It gives me the rainbow wheel, and won't let me click out of it to another program, it won't let me force quit. At that point, I can only force the shut down by holding the start button down. So my iMovie is useless.
If I load the new iLife software, do you think that will solve my problem?
I had the internal power supply replaced last year because the computer was going through a constant cycle of start, re-start, re-start, re-start, etc. The iMovie problems started around the same time. I also had 2 firewire ports that were dead and I could not successfully burn a video disc of any kind. When the power supply was replaced, the firewire ports came back to life. I was then able to burn discs with music and data, but I can't test anything involving video because iMovie just locks up as soon as I try.
I have about 14 GB of free space. iTunes works fine, internet runs smoothly. I can open documents, and garage band appears to function normally. So pieces of iLife are fine, but not iMovie, and presumably, iDVD. (I wouldn't know at this point.)
    Thoughts?

I had a similar problem. I purchased "the new iMac" in Sept.'07 with iMovie '08. I used the computer for 7 months for photography in iPhoto without connecting to the internet so I was not keeping up with software updates.
After working with iMovie for 1 project it started to run slow and sometimes freeze and I would have to shut off power and re-start. I was getting a similar freeze in iPhoto during editing a photo, especially when I was zoomed in on the photo using the slider in the lower right corner of the screen. Sometimes I would get an error message telling me to re-start the computer. It was very frustrating having these problems with a new computer that had never ben asked to do anything but iPhoto and iMovie.
Last May I took the computer back to where I bought it. They looked at the logs and saw that the graphics bd was related to the panic errors. All they did was run all of the software updates that had come out between September and May, which included iMovie update 7.1, iMac software update 1.2.1, iLife support 8.2, iMovie update 7.1.1 and iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.3 among other updates not specific to iMovie or the OS. When I got the computer back everything worked beautifully. The tech noted that everything worked fine after the software updates and the EFI firmware update and there was no hardware problem. The machine is now connected to the internet and I am religious about keeping the updates current.
I am no expert, not even close (this is my first post) but I just wanted to say what worked for me. If you want to see what updates you have installed, in the Finder, click on the apple icon, then click on software update > preferences>installed updates. Here you can view what updates have been installed. Assuming you are connected to the internet I would run all the available software updates and see if that helps before you take it for service.
Maybe another reader of the forum can tell you if the other problems you were having with power supply could be related, or if your computer purchased this long ago is being asked to do too much?
    Good luck.
