Excel printing slow

Hi all,
I'm using Macbook 2.53 with Snow Leopard 10.6.4. Everything is fine except MS Excel printing slow and after printing, I have to close then re-open the file in case I need to modify something in that Excels file because the printing job cause the very slow moving, select... Is it the common problem of Mac or particular mine? How to solve that problem? Please help. It's MS 2008 for Mac, was installed by dealer.
I used many printer like HP, Canon... and it's also slow on printing preview. The printing preview quite small and can not adjust Margin like in Windows?
Thank for any help!

  • Excel 2007 Slow Opening File

We were looking at migrating to Office 2007. To verify compatibility, several key users have loaded Office 2007 on their machines. There seems to be several problems related to opening files in Excel.
If Excel is open and the user does a File/Open, files will open quickly. However, if the user clicks on a file to open it, it can take up to a minute to open. I found a fix for this on this forum. It is to add "%1" to the end of the Open command line in the defined file types for XLS files. After this worked, I found that also needs it for the New on XLT, Open for XLSX, New on XLTM, and New XLTX files.
After adding in the above fix I wanted to verify that it worked correctly by recreating the problem so I went in and removed the "%1" from all of the commands. When I tried to open a file, I got an error. So I went back into the File Types and checked the command lines. Now all of the command lines had a %1 at the end of them without the quotation marks. When I would try to delet this %1, it would now allow me to. I could remove it but when I reopened the line, it was back again. If I added the "%1" back to the end of the line it would take that and it would fix the problem again but I was still unable to remove the %1 from the other commands such as New, Print, Save As, etc. I had to Restore my system in order to remove them.
Further testing on the fix reveals that when I file is opened, it attempts to open the file twice. The first time it opens very quickly and then a minute later it opens the second time. Notice that this is the same delay that was experienced previously. It you open the file and make a change before the minute has elapsed, then you get a message stating that the file is already open and if you open it again you will lose your changes. This is probably due to the Use DDE being selected. But If I turn off DDE, then when I click on the first file, it opens quickly and when I click on the second file, it also opens quickly but if I look at the Task Manager, their are 2 copies of Excel running. If I go to the View tool bar in either copy of Excel and try to view the other window, I can not. So it appears that there physically 2 copies of Excel running. When I went back into the File Types, the Use DDE that I had unselected before is now checked again but the DDE command line is blank.
Thinking that may this was something that was surely fixed now that it is 2008 and the software is 2007, I looked for updates and found that IT had not run the updates. Loaded the Compatibility Pack and Service Pack 1 and high hopes that this would correct the problems. After loading the updates, I found that the File Types had reverted back to their original form without the "%1". Now I was really excited. Why would they reset user changes unless they fixed something related to them? To my dismay, the slow startup was back. I had to go back and set the "%1" back into all of the proper command lines.
As of now, my recomendation to IT is to stay as far away from Office 2007 as possible until Microsoft gets their act together.
By the way...I have tried all of the other recomendations from Microsoft about Excel being slow to start. They make a difference of less than 1 second. They also only make the App start quicker. They are not related to clicking on a file to open it.

I didn't seem to get much help from this forum but I will pass on the fix that I have found.
The problem doesn't have anything to do with the %1 fix that everyone is using. All that does is to open the file before Excel is fully started. In particular, before the add-ins are opened.
You can verify this by changing the command line in the File Types to use a /s parameter which will bypass loading the add-ins.
What I found was that even though I had removed the Adobe AcrobatMaker add-in, the file PDFMaker.xla was still in the XLSTART folder and was being loaded.
Since Office now has it's own PDF functionality, this is no longer needed. I did however want to keep Acrobat so that I could print PDFs from other applications and edit PDF files so I wanted to keep it. Just not in Office.
Here are the steps to remove PDFMaker from Excel.
Choose Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
Select Acrobat Professional and click Change/Remove.
    Click Next.
    Select Modify and click Next.
Expand the Create Adobe PDF menu, then select the Acrobat PDF Maker option, and change the status to "This feature will not be available".
Click Next, and then click Finish to complete the process and allow Acrobat to remove the PDFMaker component. Note: You need the installation disk to do this.
After completing this process, it is interesting that it disabled but did not remove the PDFMaker.xla add-in. It is therefore necessary to remove it manually by exploring to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\XLSTART and manually deleting PDFMaker.xla.
Now for those of you who have already tried the "%1" fix and found that it causes new problems and doesn't fix things, you may have already found out that when you try to remove the "%1" from the File Type Open command line, something puts it back in as %1 without the quotation marks. This causes errors when you open a document that has spaces in it's path such as unable to open C:\Documents.xlsx, Unable to open And.xlsx, unable to open Settings.xlsx. No matter how hard you try, you cannot remove the %1.
So here is 2 ways to overcome this.
You can change the parameter from %1 to "%10". This will work as long as you don't try to open 10 files at the same time.
Or you can edit your registry and remove the %1. The easiest way I found was to open the registry editor and search for excel.exe" /e %1. Notice that this is the end of the command line. When I found it, I removed the %1. If you edited more than just the Open command for XLS files, you will need to keep searching until you remove all of the changes. This will get you back to where you were before you tried the "%1" fix.
There may be other add-ins that cause similar problems. Look in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\XLSTART folder to see what is really getting loaded.

  • Exporting Crystal Report data to the Excel Print Headers

Hello everyone.  I am trying to do something with Excel headers that is a little more advanced than the usual.  I have multiple reports that are designed to export to Excel.  Normally I only export a report header.  However, I have a customer who wants a label to appear in each page header and footer in Excel. Here is the catch - they want the label to appear in the Excel print header and footer, not just on the main excel page.  The label contains an SBU marking, so there is a requirement that it gets printed on every page.
If you are not familiar with the print header, it is a separate section of an Excel document that appears when you print the excel document.  For this operation, I don't think I can use the built-in Crystal Export options.  I have tried to Export to Microsoft Excel and I can send the page header and footer to the Excel data sheet, but not to the print header/footer.
    Thanks for your help!
      - David

    Hi David,
I haven't worked with Excel's headers and footers but you are correct that Crystal can't export to those sections.  I have though had to make modifications to an Excel file after exporting and I believe you will need to do something similar to what I did.
After I exported the report to Excel, I had a program I wrote that opened the Excel file and modified it.  In my case I just had to encrypt it, zip it up and email it.  You may need to do something as well outside of Crystal and Excel.  Crystal doesn't export to an Excel template so automating it in Excel wouldn't work.
    Good luck,
    Brian

  • HP Photosmart 8750 prints slow when using Photo Gray Cartidge

HP Photosmart 8750 prints slow when using Photo Gray Cartidge ... sometimes indicates Black Cartridge failed, however upon reinserting works slow

Welcome to the HP Forums ButchG,
I see by your post that when printing with the photo gray cartridge the black cartridge will indicate that it has failed.
I can help you with this issue.
I would do a power reset to see if that will resolve the issue.
With the printer still turned on, disconnect the power cable from the back of the printer, if the printer has external power module with a detachable power cord disconnect it for 15 seconds and then reconnect it.
Hold down the power button for 10 seconds to drain the power.
Then disconnect the power cable from the wall outlet.
Wait 10 seconds and reconnect the power cable back to the wall outlet first, then the back of the printer and power it on again.
Make sure the printer is connected directly to wall outlet. (don't use a power hub or a surge protector)
I have provided a document for the cleaning the contacts and reseating the cartridge.
'Cartridge Failed' or 'Cartridge Not Compatible' Error Message.
    What are the ink levels?
Are you using Genuine HP Cartridges?
Check the date on the cartridges to make sure they are still in warranty. (not old stock)
If you need further assistance, let me know.
    Have a nice day!
    Thank You.

  • Flash 10 Prints slow

My C# program uses AxShockwaveFlashObjects.AxShockwaveFlash to run SWF files.
The SWF file has code inside it to print a report.
Everything was fine in Flash 9.
But when some computers are upgraded to Flash 10 the print jobs are slow.
the Flash 10 print slowness is caused by the print job size going from 512 KB to 128 MB in size.
In most cases I can't uninstall Flash 10 because other apps need Flash 10.
Is there a way to speed up the print jobs or reduce the size of the print job in Flash 10?
Note: only some computers have the problem.
It happens on XP, Vista, Win 7

Hi, I wouldn't think the chip would matter, since Flash Player is a browser plugin. An ActiveX Control Installed in IE and a SWF for the non-IE browsers. Flash files are Installed into the C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash for all browsers and they work with those aforementioned add ons.
What may be affecting your performance is the hardware acceleration that is turned on by default. You can turn it off and see if there is an improvement. You can use this Adobe test site and when you see the Adobe Flash logo, Right click on it and Settings, Display Settings. UN check the box. Also while you are there the site will tell you what version of Flash Player you have Installed. You can do this for each browser.
Without checking I don't know what chip I have, but I use XP/SP3/IE6/Flash Player vs 10.1.82.76 and have no problem.
I know there are many XP's out there and MS is doing there best to have everyone to upgrade:-) Also, IE9 I hear is coming out of beta on 9/9/10, Win8 is being prepared and the last day to buy a new XP, I think is October this year. Forgot the date. IE9 will only be available for Vista and Win7.

  • Pixma Pro-10 prints first print slow

    Hello everyone,
I'm looking for some help with my Pixma pro-10 and I'd be eternally grateful if anyone could solve my problem.
I've had the printer for just under a year and in the past 3 months the issue has started happening more often.
The printer intermittently prints slow, and it seems to happen when I change paper sizes.  Lets say we're printing multiple copies of the same print, the first one will always print slow, then consecutive versions always print at normal speed.
My set up is MacBook Air 2GHZ 8GB RAM running latest version of Yosemite 10.0.2
    I have tried:
Reinstalling printer driver by resetting printing system in system prefs.
    Reinstalled canon print studio pro.
    Changed USB cables
We have two macs and its the same on both macs.
It happen's when we print PDF's from preview so we're thinking its not specific to canon print studio pro.
We genuinely only ever use canon inks.
I have contacted Canon and they suggested sending it away for repair which is an option but I want to exhaust every avenue before I do that.  It just seems like a software issue somewhere and it making me tear my hair out, haha.
Thank you so much for any help anyone is willing to give.
    Regards,
    Mark

It is possibile the printer is faulty.  No doubt.  You know, anything made by the hand of man...............
But you probably have the exact same software, drivers, on either and each machine.  I still think I would go there first.  It is going to be a pain to mess with getting the printer to a service person if it truly is the culprit.  You need to be sure.

  • Prints slow

prints slow and was previously faster.  any suggestions on how to speed it up?

I too have a slow print problem with a CP2025. Prior I had CP2605 and CP1215 that worked really fast but the colors started fading on the 2605 so I purchased the CP2025 to replace it and installed the universal driver. Now not only is the CP2025 printing slow but so does my other printers? I didn't change a thing on those. The CP1215 sometimes doesn't print and I have a heck of a time deleting the print jobs. Anybody have any Ideas? BTW: I is on a LAN and USB, both experience slow issues and I can not seem to get the CP2025 to do what I want. Sometimes it will print on both sides and sometimes it wont'. I use Windows Vista, XP, 2000 and 7 and all do the same thing. If I try to print a two sided copy it will print the same thing on both sides unless I make sure to set it to Collate and that isn't the default! HELP!

  • Photosmart C6150 printing slow even when using printer controls

It started out intermintently printing slow using the PC and the front panel copy button, as if it was switching into high resolution mode.  I checked the driver / printer prefrences and found nothing in high resolution mode.  Recently we have been doing alot of copying from the front panel, not from the computer software, and it got worse.  I checked the quality setting in the printer and even set it to fast.  It would then print a semi-fast sheet  (as if it was fighting itself to print faster but couldn't), then a fast sheet, then the next sheet would be slow again.  After a few times of doing this, it finally stopped printing normal or fast and now it's stuck in high res slow printing mode.  I printed a self test diagnostic page and it printed in less than 60 seconds and showed nothing.  I have also chaned out the drivers on the PC and still nothing.  Could it be a firmware issue and is that something I can flash?

Hello , Welcome to the HP Community. I hope you have a pleasant experience here.  I understand you are having an issue with slow printing on your HP Photosmart C6150 All-in-One printer. I'd love to help you with this. First, I'd like you to try printing a self test page again: HP Photosmart C6100 All-in-One Series - Printing the Self-Test Diagnostic Page If the test page printed in less than 60 seconds, then I would suggest following the steps here to troubleshoot the driver and settings on your computer:HP All-in-One Printers - Slow Printing in Windows: Computer Issues If the issue persists after these steps, I'd recommend replacing your USB cable (with a smaller one if it is over 6ft long). If the test page took longer that 60 seconds to print, then I would suggest following the steps here to troubleshoot an issue you may be having with the printer hardware:HP All-in-One Printers - Slow Printing in Windows: Hardware Issues Another thing I would suggest, if the printer is slow even from the printer, would be to make sure the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet. The printer does have a power moderator built in, so when plugged into a power surge or battery backup, it can often not get enough power. Please respond to let me know if these steps help to resolve your issue!Have a great day.

  • On the printing slowness of Postscript produced by the JVM from calls to Graphics.drawString() (Linux/Unix)

    Happy new year,
before the holidays my attention was drawn to an issue that supposedly the Postscript produced by the JVM is too big and hence too slow.  Here are my findings.
    The issue
Text printing via CUPS to native Postscript printers can be slow. Printing a terms and conditions page (17000 characters/page) takes three and a half minutes to print on a Dell 2330 dn laser printer (96 MB,Max speed 33 ppm). The file is about 8 MB in size. To contrast that, rendering the text to a buffered image with 300 DPI and printing the result produces 7 MB of output which prints in 30 seconds on the same printer. More measures for different printers and documents can be found at the end of this post. The issues is registered as  "JDK-4627340 : RFE: A way to improve text printing performance for postscript devices" (http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4627340) and the proposed workaround is to use printer fonts.
    Side remark regarding the workaround
There is a regression that prevents the workaround from working (bug 9008662 at Sun (not yet visible),  bug 8023990 at OpenJDK (https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-8023990). Without knowing what other bad side effects this might have, the issue can be resolved by setting the property "sun.awt.fontconfig". On my system I set it to the location of a "fontconfig.properties" of a JVM that does not have the bug (e.g. /home/alex/openjdk_7_b147_jun_11/openjdk/build/linux-i586/bin/java -Dsun.awt.fontconfig="/etc/java-6-openjdk/fontconfig.properties" Print2DtoStream). I also successfully tested the workaround on an Oracle JVM 1.7.0_03-b04.
    Back to the main topic
How the JVM draws text if it can't use a standard printer font
Text is drawn with postscript path drawning commands such as "moveto", "lineto" or "curveto". As an example consider the word "ll" which looks something like this:
    %N->short for "newpath"
    N
    %paint first "l"
    %M->short for "moveto"
    0.76875 11.06 M
    %L->short for "lineto"
    0.76875 2.468 L
    1.823 2.468 L
    1.823 11.06 L
    0.76875 11.06 L
    %p->short for "closepath"
    P
    %paint second "l"
    3.649 11.06 M
    3.649 2.468 L
    4.703 2.468 L
    4.703 11.06 L
    3.649 11.06 L
    P
The same text could be printed with a printer font using the command "(ll) show" which is much more compact but is available in Java only for the Postscript standard fonts and it isn't working at all right now as explained above.
    Is it the file size?
My first thought was that the file size was the source of of slowness and so I wrote a small processor that would detect glyphs, normalize*1 them and place them in a dictionary. Recurring references to the same glyph were replaced by a dictionary reference  (This is incidentally the fix proposed by the original author of RFE 4627340). This shrunk the file to about 11% of the original size but the processing time surprisingly doubled.
*1: With "normalizing" I mean applying a translation transform so that the smallest coordinates in the contours of a glyph are exactly 0. In addition I experimented with performing a normalizing scale transform so that all coordinates lie between 0 and 1 so that identical glyphs are detected at arbitrary positions and at different font sizes.
That led to the question to why there is such a big difference in performance between a Type 1 font dictionary and a self constructed dictionary since both contain basically the same drawing instructions. The difference is apparently that fonts are cached and user drawings are not unless explicitly told.
    The Postscript "ucache" instruction
Postscript level 2 introduces the "ucache" instruction which seems to be defined for precisely this kind of problem. From the documentation:
"Some PostScript programs define paths that are repeated many times. To optimize the interpretation of such paths, the PostScript language provides a facility called the user path cache. This cache, analogous to the font cache, retains the results from previously interpreted user path definitions. When the PostScript interpreter encounters a user path that is already in the cache, it substitutes the cached results instead of reinterpreting the path definition. "
After adding "ucache" instructions to my filter the speed improved by factor 10.
To illustrate the said the "ll" text from above looked as follows after the transformation:
    %definition of the glyph "l" named "p0"
    /p0
    ucache
    0.000 0.000 1.054 8.592 setbbox
    0.000 8.592 moveto
    0.000 0.000 lineto
    1.054 0.000 lineto
    1.054 8.592 lineto
    0.000 8.592 lineto
    closepath
    } cvlit def
    G
    N
    0.769 2.468 translate
    %draw "l" at 0.769 2.468
    p0 ufill
    -0.769 -2.468 translate
    3.649 2.468 translate
    %draw "l" at 3.649 2.468
    p0 ufill
    -3.649 -2.468 translate
For ucached shapes there is a special compact representation so that the same can be written as follows:
    /p0
    0.000 0.000 1.054 8.592
    0.000 8.592
    0.000 0.000
    1.054 0.000
    1.054 8.592
    0.000 8.592
    } cvlit def
    G
    N
    0.769 2.468 translate
    p0 ufill
    -0.769 -2.468 translate
    3.649 2.468 translate
    p0 ufill
    -3.649 -2.468 translate
Interestingly the speed improvement remained the same on a Chinese report that had hardly any character reuse. Upon this observation I changed the filter to not use a dictionary but so simply instruct the interpreter to cache each glyph definition and the performance remained nearly the same.
The initial "ll" text from above looks as follows after this transformation:
    N
    %paint first "l" cached
    0.76875 2.468 1.823 11.06
    0.76875 11.06
    0.76875 2.468
    1.823 2.468
    1.823 11.06
    0.76875 11.06
    } ufill
    %paint second  "l" cached
    3.649 2.468 4.703 11.06
    3.649 11.06
    3.649 2.468
    4.703 2.468
    4.703 11.06

Note that I didn't normalize the shapes.
Why does this improve the performance so vastly if the shape is drawn only once? For a while I thought perhaps that the interpreter would consider two paths which differ only by a translation as being the same but rereading the documentation and looking at the Chinese example in which nearly all characters are unique, disproves this. The relevant part of the documentation reads:
"Caching is based on the value of a user path object. That is, two user paths are considered the same for caching purposes if all of their corresponding elements are equal, even if the objects themselves are not.
A user path placed in the cache need not be explicitly retained in virtual memory. An equivalent user path appearing literally later in the program can take advantage of the cached information. Of course, if it is known that a given user path will be used many times, defining it explicitly in VM avoids creating it multiple times.
User path caching, like font caching, is effective across translations of the user coordinate system, but not across other transformations, such as scaling or rotation. In other words, multiple instances of a given user path painted at different places on the page will take advantage of the user path cache when the current transformation matrix has been altered only by translate. If the CTM has been altered by scale or rotate , the instances will be treated as if they were described by different user paths."
An explanation that would fit the findings
The rasterizer renders the page multiple time (perhaps in order to save memory and produce horizontal strips). On the first rendering the cache is filled and reused on the subsequent renderings thereby improving performance even if all cached items are used only once.
Based upon this theory I hoped that the strip height would grow if I added more memory to the printer but this was not the case on the two printers for which I had memory to test with. Even substantial changes to the available memory (e.g. going from 32 MB to 96 MB) had no impact whatsoever on the performance.
    Summary
The issue is not related to the file size as the original requester suspected but very likely due to the uncached rendering. Caching of glyphs can be achieved by using the "ucache" instruction or perhaps by placing the glyphs in font dictionaries and using the "show" operator.
Although reported in 2003, time is apparently not healing this quick enough since printers in the 10,000$ class like the Sharp MX2310U still take a full minute to print 10 pages and a desktop printer may be blocked for over an hour for the same document.
We will now try to use the CUPS filter and leave the printers configured as Postscript printers. If there is interest I can post the single file source of a CUPS filter that performs the inline conversion described. Apart from libl it requires no additional libraries and written using flex it is reasonably lightweight and fast.
I would appreciate any opinion on whether or not the proposed workaround for bug 8023990 (https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-8023990), namely having the system property "sun.awt.fontconfig" pointing to a working fontconfig.properties of a previously installed and working 1.6 version file, is safe.

    "Terms and Conditions" report
Testing a single page "Terms and Conditions" report in "Arial" 8pt (I am aware that "Helvetica" is width compatible and nearly looks the same but in this particular case the line height was also relevant and as explained above, printer fonts are currently not working). The page contains 17000 characters of which some parts are bold and some italic. This is a real world example and to make things worse the requirement is to print the text on the backside of every page on a certain class of reports. I am aware that this is a bit extreme but I also felt that I couldn't dismiss it as being unreasonable.

Testing 10 pages of Asian characters in the font "WenQuanYi Zen Hei" 12pt where each page contains 49 lines by 40 unique characters. The document contains the 30,000 characters between unicode 0x4e00 and 0x9fff. This is a nonsense stress test but it illustrates  that the "ucache" speedup works even though no character is repeated in the report.

    Hi Sven,
Will putting the boilerplate in the trailer section allow me to still have it appearing on the back page of the main report? This is where it needs to be as far as the printed report goes - it is duplexed.

  • Application Build Failure on Excel.Print Report call

Developing software in LV2009 that uses Report Generation Toolkit to read/write from Excel templates. Program runs fine in development mode. AppBuilder crashes on *.exe build when adding NIReport.lvclassrint Report.vi
Digging down, I find a broken run arrow on the NI_Excel.lvclassrint Report.vi as shown here:
According to the Show Errors dialog, there is an unwired or bad terminal on the PrintOut invoke node; however I have not made any changes to this shipping VI (that I know of). I did try wiring all the unused inputs (empty strings to From, To, and PrToFileName; false booleans to Preview, PrintToFile, and Collate) after I ran into the error, but that had no luck either. Also tried inserting To Variant conversions for all input elements, just in case there was a problem in the implicit data to variant conversion.
I have also tried a ctrl+shift+run compile of the whole application, but that doesn't seem to get it to un-break, either.
Has anyone run into this problem before? It's weird that it would just break like that--I had actually compiled this particular executable before, using pretty much all the same Report Generation Toolkit VIs that I am using now. The only difference since the last build was that I replaced a Report.SaveAs function with a Report.Save function.
Also of note: I have included all the Report classes in my project and build specification in order to compile the dependencies into support libraries to minimize the number of labview files included with the executable distribution. This is probably why an error with the Print Report.vi calls is crashing the AppBuilder even when I don't explicitly call that VI anywhere in my code.
    Solved!

    Hey Guys,
I know this post if kind of old but I hope maybe one of you can help me out.  I'm using an invoke node similar to what is above to print out an Excel spreadsheet to the default printer.  My issue is that when I try to print from the spreadsheet from the executable, the executable crashes.  I know it is that invoke node. The reason why I say that is because until recently I had two development computers, one running on Windows 7 LabVIEW 2010, and one running on Windows XP LabVIEW2010.  The original .exe was built with the XP machine, when I tried to make some changes with the Windows 7 machine and open the project it would say that there was a missing connection to the invoke node even though I did not touch that part of the application. I would then remove the invoke node, add it again and it would clear the error for whatever reason. I would then build the .exe with the Windows 7 machine and when it would run, the application would crash at the point where it goes to print the spreadsheet.  I got around this by building the .exe with the Windows XP machine, and it worked fine without any issues. However, my Windows XP machine cra**ed out so i'm no longer able to build the .exe on the XP machine .  I needed to make some changes to the .exe not anything involving this section of the code and for whatever reason when the application goes to print it crashes.  I get some criptic crash report from Windows that is pretty much useless.  I think its a Windows thing. This was workign correctly though until I did a build on the Windows 7 machine.
