Excel repair for Mac

Help!
My very important budget-file is corrupted! I use Excel for Mac 2008 on my Macbook (Mac OS X 10.6.8). I recently used the file but now when I want to open it it says 'The file you are trying to open is possibly read-only or the location you are trying to open is read-only. Or the server you are trying to access is not responding'.
I'm afraid the file is corrupted
What is strange is that there are two other files which all of the sudden have the same issue, all 3 files have the .xls extension instead of .xlsx which I can open without a problem.
I didn't do anything myself to these files?! So is it a question of corruption of wrong extension? No idea!
I've allready tried searching for a program that can repair corrupted excel-files but they don't work on my Mac, are all for Windows OS.
Can anybody help?? I'm getting really desperaty here! It's a very important budget-file, and ofcourse my back-up with Time Machine is from after when i last used the file
Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

How to Restore a Lost Excel Spreadsheet
Damaged File
1. Log on to your computer and open Microsoft Excel. Click on the "File" menu.
2. Choose "Open" from the list. Browse to the damaged file and highlight it.
3. Click on the small drop-down arrow at the right side of the "Open" button. Choose the "Open and Repair" option. Choose "Repair" to have Excel attempt to recover the damaged file. Choose "Extract data" to extract the information in the spreadsheet to another file.
4. Save the recovered spreadsheet to your hard drive or network share. Save a backup copy of the spreadsheet as well.
Lost File
5. Search your hard drive for the file. It is not uncommon to save an Excel spreadsheet to the wrong location by mistake. Click on the "Start" menu and choose "Search" from the list.
6. Choose the "All files and folders" option and type ".xls" in the search box. This will find all Excel spreadsheets on your computer, whether they were created in Excel 2007 or an earlier version. Click "OK" to start the search.

  • Can't open an Excel doc (w/ macros and VBA) in Excel 2011 for Mac. Anyone have any ideas (other than using a pc instead)?

    Hi all,
I am trying to open a document created in Excel in Windows on my Excel 2011 for mac copy.  The issue seems to be related to using the Macros and VB associated with the .xlsm doc.  The specific error I get in Excel is:
Compile error in hidden module: Utilities
When I try to open it in an Excel web app, or other online excel environment (whether using Firefox or Chrome) I get this message:
We can't show these features in the browser:
    VBA Project
    Shapes or other objects
few other forums suggested an issue with adobe add-ins, but I don't show one in the Excel>Tools>Addins dialogue.
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

The same error message will result from a problem in any add-ins ,thus you should investigate other installed add-ins. It is worth the effort to try to start your excel program in safe mode. About how to use safe mode in Mac OS, Please refer to :http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892428
If this issue is gone in this situation, try to disable add-ins in excel.
In addition, since this issue is related to Excel 2011 for Mac, I would suggest that you post your issue in the following forum:http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac

Is there an excel spreadsheet for MAC (OS X v10.8.5)? I notice the Text Edit does not have a feature that will automatically group names alphabetical order.

BBEdit (Free trial) or TextWrangler (BBEdit's baby brother = just plain FREE) will do the trick

options for sort results are very robust - this was sort to new document - original behind

Because even after 14 years MS has failed to add arabic support to most Office products for Mac.  Instead use Open/LibreOffice or Numbers.

I’m using excel 2011 for Mac and my OS is Yosemite. After a recent update from Microsoft I’ve stopped seeing what I am typing in the cell until I press enter. It appears in the formula bar but not in the cell. How can I change this so the characters show in the cells as I type them?

  • Inserting Symbols in Excel 2011 for Mac

How do I insert the `cubic' symbol (the tiny 3) in Excel 2011 for Mac OS Yosemite Version 10? I upgraded my OS recently and the Advanced Symbol tab seems to have disappeared. Please help.

I suggest doing it as follows:
Show OS X's Character Viewer.  Do that from the Menu Bar.  If you don't see how, go to System Preferences > Keyboard and check "Show Keyboard & Character Viewers in Menu Bar."
In the search bar in the upper right, type "3".
In the results (shown in the lower right), the first result you see is a superscript "3".
Double click the superscript "3" to transfer it to your Excel spreadsheet (wherever you left your cursor there).

  • Excel 2011 for Mac problem on Mavericks?

I have an unusual problem that just reared its head yesterday. I'm on Excel for Mac 2011 v. 14.3.8, and Mavericks 10.9.  I don't know if this is specifically Mavericks related or not.
I have a file that resides on my Mac Pro in our den. We have our two MacBook Airs set up with file sharing, screen sharing, etc., so that we can easily access and update that file from our Airs (its's our personal finance spreadsheet, a critical document for us!).
All of the sudden, when we try to access the file from our Airs via conventional file sharing, we get the following message: "Excel could not open 2013 Finances.xlsx because some content is unreadable. Do you want to open and repair this workbook? If Excel cannot repair the file, some data may be lost" Our options in the dialog box are to Cancel or Open and Repair. When I click on the latter, I get the following message: "The workbook cannot be opened or repaired by Microsoft Excel because it is corrupt".
Interestingly, though, I can open the file normally from the desktop, so the file doesn't appear "corrupt".
Also, from our Airs, I can open up any other file via file sharing, so it's not a global File Sharing problem.
Also, from our Airs, I can open the file via Screen Sharing, interestingly.
Finally, I went into Time Machine and restored the file from a few days ago. It continues to get weirder. I can open that restored file fine via File Sharing on the Airs. Then, from the Airs, if I add some new data, then save it, then try to reopen it, I get the error message and am unable to open it from my Air while being able to open it from my desktop.
I've posted to a Microsoft forum as wel, but I'd appreciate any help you can give me!

  • Excel equivalent for Mac OS/X?

    Hey everyone,
Is there a similar database program for Mac like Microsh*t Excel?
If anyone can point me in the right direction, they'll have this question "solved"!
    Best,

Excel is a spreadsheet, and exists in a Mac version (in fact, the Mac version predates the Windows version). Do you instead mean Microsoft Access?
If so, there's no direct equivalent, but there are a number of Mac databases, including Filemaker Pro (probably the most popular), OpenBase, MySQL, FrontBase and others. Or you can run Windows through Boot Camp or Parallels Workstation and run Access.
