Excel started launching at startup

This started happening after I downloaded an excel spreadsheet calculator. I've run Norton - no virus.

First, UNINSTALL the Norton A/V. That stuff is completely unnecessary on a Mac and A/V software causes frequent problems.
Go to system preferences>users & groups. Click on startup items. Thew Excel thing should be there. Delete it.

  • Finder won't launch at startup

What's the best way out of a problem which stops the Finder launching at startup? I have no idea why my recently clean-installed system seems to spontaneously start corrupting in the middle of innocuous tasks but here's my own grisly log of this issue:
    1. Erase Boot Camp partition
    2. Create new Boot Camp partition
    3. Install Windows XPsp2 and Apple Boot Camp drivers
    4. Boot into Windows, install 2 apps, all ok
    5. Boot into Mac Os
    6. Disk Utility Verify Disk reports all ok
    7. Repair permissions
    8. TextEdit freezes while saving to desktop
    9. Finder is inaccessible although cursor moves
    10. Force power down
    11. Reboot but icons don't load and menubar is incomplete and transparent
    12. Message: Finder quit unexpectedly on startup
    13. Message: SystemUI Server quit unexpectedly on startup
    14. Finder Report:
    Identifier: Finder

    15. Repeat 10-14 above with same result
    16. Boot into external FW drive (10.5.1)
    17. Very slow
    18. Click on Disk Utility in Dock and it disappears in puff of smoke.
    19. Open DU from Applications folder and Verify Disk reports internal Mac partition is ok
    20. However DU unable to verify new Boot Camp volume as it "could not be unmounted".
    21. Open Boot Camp volume but no files or folders visible.
    22. Repair permissions on internal Mac disk.
23 Reboot into internal Mac partition
    24 Repeat 11-14 above
    25. Force power down and reboot into Safe Mode
    26. Repeat 11-14 above
Does anyone have a clue what might be going on? Meanwhile, is there anything short of (yet another) system reinstall which might fix it? I have a Time Machine backup - not as current as I would like but that may be A Good Thing. But I keep having issues with this iMac after 5 weeks of perfect running... ever since the 10.5.2/Graphics/Quicktime 7.4.1 updates to be precise.
Is it conceivable that my symptoms are hardware related? Even after a zero erase and full reinstallation a week ago, I can't seem to keep the machine running properly.
I have a very similarly configured Intel MacBookPro which has behaved impeccably - but it is still running 10.5.1.
    Thanks for any help.

Well, there has been a resounding silence so I guess y'all are out enjoying your weekend instead of poring over the forums.
Just to follow on with the next chapter: I booted one more time into my external drive and ran DU Verify Disk on my startup volume again. It passed it as OK. I then ran DiskWarrior 4.1 over the disk. It also passed it as OK. Finally, I ran all the TechTool Deluxe 3.12 hardware tests and the big one failed. It reported problems with the volume structure and attempted (but failed) to repair the Leaf Record Count in the Catalog B-Tree.
I guess it's possible that TT was wrong and the others were right but in view of the problems I'm having, I figure TT has to be right. So I'm now writing zeros to the Mac partition and will restore from Time Machine to a week-old backup which was carefully checked before backing up.
I just wish I knew what caused these problems. This is the second time in a fortnight that I have had to erase and reinstall - and it's becoming a full time job! Anyway, this is definitely the last time. If the disk goes kaput again, Apple can have my iMac back.

  • Get AIR app to start as OS Startup

    Hello!
How can I make an AIR application start at Windows Startup (and other OSs)?
    Thank you!

    Oh....
I'm sceptical to if that's even possible, as that would have massive security risks.
Essentially what you'd have to do is add your app to the key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    within your registry.
so your best bet would be to look around and see if Actionscript can mess around with the registry, which i don't think it can due to the hugeeeeeee security implications it would create...i may be wrong though.
    I know it's possible in C/C++ though.

might be worth having a look at, it does say
Note:  The application does not launch when the computer
system starts. It launches when the user logs in.
but it might give you some answers

  • Stop auto launching at startup??

How do I get Spotify to stop auto launching at startup of my desktop?  I have looked all over and cannot find the option.
    Thanks.

Here's another "me too" followed by what I've done so far. In Windows 7, about three weeks ago my Spotify started loading at startup.I checked preferences, for some reason the option had changed on its own to load at startup. I reset to "do NOT load" at startupThe next time I rebooted, it started up on its own again. I checked settings, they had changed back again. Again I fixed my preferencesThe NEXT time I rebooted, it happened again! This time I not only changed the setting back to NOT load at startup, I also opened MSCONFIG and checked the TWO, count-em, TWO entries of Spotify to prevent loading at startup. Pop up box suggested restartiing the computer. I did, no Spotify loaded. Yay...for now...however,Two hours later I took my laptop with me on a business visit. When I turned on the computer, Spotify loaded AGAIN.I again opened MSCONFIG and found FOUR, count-em, FOUR entries of Spotify I had to check to prevent loading at startup. This is getting very frustrating. It's my belief that some recent upgrade to Spotify is causing this, as it only started a few weeks ago. Someone with Spotify needs to check into this! Help me Obi Wan!!

Probably below link might be useful. Where you can call a macro with the excel startup and load all the addins. If you need only SmartView to be initiazed then you might change the code to validate the addin name and just activate it. Am not good at Macro or VB .

  • Dock won't launch at startup for all users

Any thoughts on why the Dock app won't launch at startup. This happens for both my admin account and the guest account. I am running OSX 10.8.2 on a 2008 MacBook Pro. Previous to this issue I had been messing/deleting the plists associated with the Dock (as per other discussions) because of the Dock process taking up 100% of the CPU and getting the box hot. This issue has of course resulted in the Dock not appearing, as well as Alt-Tab not working, reminders not working menu bar, and other Dock functions. I can launch the Dock app via the terminal but it's still wonky, like the iTunes (newest) GUI doesn't function and the DVD player won't work (seems to be a similar GUI issue). For now I've stuck the Dock app in the users login preferences but that's a bad work around since there are the other symptoms that are still going on.
    Thoughts?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the name of the crashed application (Dock) or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • What is the "iTunesHelper" App that is set to launch at startup?

What is the "iTunesHelper" App that is set to launch at startup?
What does it do? Do I need it, or is it something I don't need or want?
It is not only set to start at startup, but it is also set to be "invisible".

    It's inside the iTunes package.
Control-click on iTunes and choose 'Show Package Contents'
Then navigate to Contents>Resources. iTunesHelper itself is also a package.
The preferences and .plist files don't give me a clue about exactly what it is doing.
The link provided by William is a possible (and plausible) explanation.
Afaik there is no official document from Apple, explaining what it does.
If you disable it, your iPod (if you have one) will not launch iTunes if necessary.

  • Why is Firefox (Mac) launching on startup?

I am running MacOS 10.7.5. It seems like around the time I upgraded to Firefox 18, it started to launch upon Startup. I have verified that my Preferences Login items does not include Firefox. My general System preferences are set not to restore windows on Startup.

    * Control-click on the Firefox Dock icon and uncheck 'Open at Login'
    * Click Accounts (in the System row of the System Preferences window)
** Click the Login Items tab
** Click on Firefox in the list
** Click the Minus (-) button

  • Why safari launches on startup

I have checked the startup items and Safari is not there. I don't want Safari to launch on startup. Do I have a choice?
    Thanks

Hi jenks2, and a warm welcome to the forums!
It shouldn't be starting on it's own without something going on.
Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something unknown is listed, like an http doc.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Deleted auto start / launch objects

    Hi,
since quite a while my iMac 2010 with the current OSX version 10.7.2 deletes most of the autostart / launch objects.
A few, maybe 3-4 objects remain but they are never the same except Xmarks sync.
Then I reenter them into the list, either by dragging the app in there or activating the autolaunch setting within the settings of the app.
Then sometimes a week, sometimes after the next restart or after a week nearly all elemts are gone.
I tried lots of things like, repairing the disk and the permissions, start cleaning and the periodic scripts and so on.
    Nothing helped.
Do you have any solution or idea?
    Thank you very much
    Best wishes
    Sebastian Tischer

Yes there are some ways, but none are muti-platform:
    - first, you can wait until MIDP3 that will include this functionnality, but we don't know when...
    - second, you can use the API available only on SonyEricsson that does auto start an application
    - third, you can develop your own daemon on Symbian or WM that will start on mobile startup and launch your Midlet using the push registry, but then you'll have a user confirmation to confirm if the user allows or not the application to start.

  • Follow-up: Starting, Launching and Switching ...

Follow-up: Starting, Launching and Switching ... Messing around with the Windows UI - not a feature problem, but a provisioning problem! Now start listening and please fix it this time!
(Is it still program managers or people in power designing the UI for Windows? It certainly does not look like domain specialist or software engineering designing the solution here - it's just too weak for that to look like a professional solution?
Please let educated people do their work ...)
    Problem:
    - Task Bar = (is and still is originally) Start. So keep promoting task bar and kill the new Start. Task Bar is Start.
    - Virtual Desktop lacks virtual Start (= virtual Task Bar) (Virtual Desktop only have virtual launch from the virtual documents (the virtual desktop) ... you need to add virtual start beyond virtual launch.
    - Starting universal Windows apps including touch goes to the virtual task bar (add virtualization above, i.e. context changes - for touch meaning i.e. increasing the task bar (Start) areas height)
    Cause:
    Steven Sinofsky:
@Computermensch writes “The problem with this "analysis" (show me the data) is that you're only managing current activities surrounding the taskbar. So with respect "to evolving the taskbar" you're only developing it within its
current operational framework while developing or evolution of it really should refer to developing the taskbars concept.”
    0) A history reminder - where is Windows 10 now starting program: Back where Windows 7 left off.
Well, guess I do not have to remind about what happened to Windows 8. Now we're back at it. Welcome back to testing ...
I did some of them, testing Windows client for Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and now Windows 10.
Let's go back in time to 2008 - Engineneering Windows 7:
    Follow-up: Starting, Launching, and Switching
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/e7/archive/2008/09/29/follow-up-starting-launching-and-switching.aspx
Then let's go forward in time - to Windows 8 coming up with a new start and launch context namely the Start Screen - and now kind of back in time again to Windows 7 and the desktop using Windows 10. So now we're also back to the Task Bar!!!! Hence we're
back to developing and evolving the way of Starting programs.
Microsoft just have a serious problem working the provisioning in it system, i.e. what concepts you supply (provision) to the user. For instance just compare an open instance of Windows Explorer with MacOS Finder. It's the same features - but the provisioning
is just much better in Finder. The concepts are just an important mess in Windows - and needs serious clean up.
No new features! Evolvle the pinning (task bar and make it work with the virtual desktop - including touch (just add some height man ...).
And fix the freaking provisioning of concepts in the All Apps list. For instance take a look at the naming in Linux for some standard folders - instead of the bloating 3rd party names.
    1) Provisioning: Now back to Windows 10 and starting programs
It's the task bar that needs development (Windows 8 kind-of "Start Menu" in Windows 7)  Take a look at my comment above again for engineering Windows 7 about the taskbar on evolution - now in context with Virtual Desktops:
           - May add some height to the task bar - and you can have kind-of tilesized stuff there.
           - Have the taskbar configuration of pins switch (be variable) with the virtual desktop. May add an ekstra feature to pin program across all virtual desktops.
           - Do not have 2 different places for pinning programs (really bad provisioning ...). Lets see some nice categories instead when pressing the start button. It really confusing pressing the start menu button - and
then you see a place like the task bar to pin programs. Typical Microsoft end up scenario, the more, the merrier ...
Please cut it down to having a pinning feature working variably in context (the task bar) with virtual desktops.
    2) Finally the All Apps list pressing the start menu button: using navigation (categories, tags or filters!!!!!) to look up and finding programs not in use on a daily or weekly basis - now in context with the virtual desktop
The All Apps list that needs a nice feature to support categorization, really better provisioning in the UI of user or standard concepts (now come on, man - fix the mess. Just take a look at the complexity in that list ...). You could add a feature
to filter the All Apps list in context with the concepts for the virtual desktop.
At least provide the application infrastructure for categorization in the Start Menu. So you could process it as a third party. See what happens. Add app store later then. Whatever. Make categorization happen. No more bloat navigating for programs.
Add a template feature to the categorization. Provide 2-3 templates with Windows and let people tag there programs. Let them extend the templates ... the concepts when doing their own user concepts.
With a template feature a user just have to fill in the blanks i.e. tag his/her programs - and the menus will parse equally. Hey, the template feature could even parse into virtual desktops. I.e. using a dev variant of a template.
It's going to be 2015. And compositional software design have been around for some time. Including factories for configuring software variability. Some come on now. Let's work.
    4) Conclusion
360 degrees now on virtual desktops, task bar, all apps and workflow please! Make it happen.
The problem with Windows 8 was not bad features - but bad provisioning including empty programs like the new wau media players ... underdeveloped features (no really good quantity of content demonstrating value = bad provisioning) ... completely lack of
demonstrating the value of the new UI. Like if Sharepoint or any other CMS was demonstrated completely blank with no sites and empty features, no templates. Just nothing.
Please do not miss the oppertunity to demonstrate the value of an evolved UI this time.
Please complete the provisioning. Your greatest problem is releasing undone things - may be the intension is there (recall DB schemas). However the "DB extension" is empty on release? Which consumers just buy the DB schema :o). Add some "movies"
(content) please ... add frameworks for content and provisioning ... use templates. If you do not understand this ... go away program manager ;o) Let a good software engineering read it.
Now let's fully develop the virtual features in the desktop in Windows 10. And have them provisioned - so people can see how to use them. That unfortunately never happened during engineering in Windows 8.

3 different ways and displays for pinning a program for Start!
Please consider merging Start (on the Start), Start Screen and the task bar - with pins extending the Task Bar and using the Metro UI icons overall including on the desktop. It would be a nice move on the look and feel - while the task bar would be
the same. Add virtualization for pins as well on the task bar. Make shortscuts and docs on the virtual desktop actual as well - binding dynamically to a virtual desktop - instead of formal and static.
Just observed the Start Screen can be turned back on using properties on the Task Bar.
Many ambigious concepts now for Starting programs instead of just using a Consolidated Start concept for Start Screen, Start on the Start Menu and Task bar.

  • IPhoto launching at startup, iSight no longer works, 10.4.8 to blame?

My built-in iSight (first 17" intel iMac) is "in use by another application" when I attempt to use it from iMovie, iChat, or Photo Booth. When I tried disconnecting everything and rebooting, I discovered that iPhoto is launching at startup.
The only thing I can think of that has changed recently is a system update about a week ago, including 10.4.8 and whatever apps were updated.
iPhoto is not set to launch in either the StartupItems folder or my user's login items. It also does not show as checked when I ctrl-click on it in the dock.
So far I've tried resetting the PRAM and installing MacOSXUpd10.4.8Intel.dmg to no avail. I see a reference to a "Combo Update" in another unrelated thread (network problems). Does anyone recommend this? Or am I just hosed until 10.5 comes out.

Problem solved. It was a digital camera driver which is no longer compatible since the new update.
03: Check your system console and see if you have any malloc errors. Are you using anything you had to install drivers for? You get the starfish for being considerate enough to reply. I hope you get it worked out.

iTunes helper launches OK, but not iTunes itself. Am I being dim?

The iTunes application should be installed on the system drive. You may need to repair iTunes to fix that error regarding a missing .exe.

  • ITunes auto launches on startup (no iPod/Phone connected)

For the last couple of weeks (perhaps longer) I've noticed iTunes launches itself whenever I restart my MacBook Pro.
There is no iPhone connected at the time.
Everything is up to date in software.
I've removed iTunes helper from my login items.
    I'm at a loss.
Your assistance in resolving this matter would be very much appreciated.
    Cheers!
    Darcy

I just tried restarting again, this time with iTunes last closed on my music tab rather than the store tab, where I realized it had been parked for some time.
iTunes still auto launched on startup, though after a longer delay than usual.
AND after I quit iTunes, it auto launched itself again. That was a first.
    For what it's worth.
