Excellent signal strength but horrible connection

need help. at wit's end. both my laptop and my phone are getting a great signal from the wireless fios router but my speed is 0.058/0.241. I'm so confused! Before I found out that my phone was also going slow, I thought it was an issue with my laptop so I defragmented my c drive but to no avail. the speed went back to normal for about two hours today but now I'm back where I started. any suggestions would be helpful

The first step is to do the speed test using a wired connection to determine if this is a FIOS problem, or purely a wireless issue.
If your wired tests are good, but your wireless tests are crap, you can try changing the wireless channel on the router.  Try channels 1,6 or 11.

Just wanted to clarify what you meant in this post. If you entered the router's IP address as the static IP for the laptop, you would get the symptoms that you are describing. Try entering a IP that isn't normally used like 192.168.1.142. (That is assuming that your router IP is the default 192.168.1.1.)
If that isn't the issue, please tell me what ipconfig is returning on both the laptop and the desktop.

  • Linksys help.  Already tried to search forums.  AirPort 'on', full signal strength but cannot connect to internet.  PC, iphone, ipad all connect fine.  Any ideas?

So I have been using my imac for 15 months.  Never had a problem with going online.  Until yesterday.  Now its impossible.  I am connecting via a linksys router (model WRT54G2) version 1.5.  I have tried resetting modem, router.  Nothing.  Keep in mind my PC, iphone, ipad all connect fine to the wireless signal.  It is only the imac that won't connect.  The strange thing is when I check network settings it says it is connected to a linksys router at full strength.  But when I click Safari, it says I am not connected.  I am completely at a loss.  Any help is much appreciated as Apple wants to charge me $50 for tech support, linksys $40 and Cox Communications $75.  I love the lack of customer service.

I resolved a similar internet connection issue at a friends house recently, the problem was the router was set to only accept 5 wireless devices. This was not an issue before, but soon as his sons got a new wireless phones and a Mac Book Air, it used up all the available DHCP connections from his router.
His computer had the same issue,
    - was connected,
    - had a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx address
    - did not have the DNS or router address in his current network settings.
The key point here is the same as yours, that all other devices were connected and could surf with Safari, except for that one device, in your case the iMac.
I determined his problem by manually assigning a 192.168.1.x  IP address, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, dns for his ISP and router address of 192.168.1.1. This worked, however it wouldn't when set to DHCP... went back to a 169 address.....
The real problem, the router was config'd to allow only 5 dhcp addresses to be giving out, once the 6 device tried, it would show a wireless full bar connect, a 169 address and wouldn't connect to the internet as Safaria stated it wasn't connected to the internet.
The real fix is to raise the number of dhcp wireless devices to a higher number, or possibly shorten the lease times so others can connect. He couldn't remember the password he changed on the linksys, so I left the network settings on his 6th wireless device in manual mode till he does remember the linksys password.
I bet thats was your case too. Linksys/Cisco is one of the best routers out there, I'd use airport Apple's second, and would not recommend NetGear because of support and technical issues in the past.

  • Have just arrived in New Zealand, and have connected to local wi fi network with go signal strength, but phone keeps saying no service?  Any idea what to do?

Have just arrived in New Zealand, have connected through local wi fi network, have good signal strength, but phone says no service, cant send texts out! any ideas?

Text messages are sent via the cellular network, not wi-fi. Only iMessages are sent via wi-fi. Unless you have roaming turned on for the phone, or you have an unlocked phone that you installed a local SIM, you would continue to see No Service. That reflects your cellular carrier service. Connecting to wi-fi has no bearing on your cellular service, which is what displays on the status bar of the phone near the signal bars (circles/dots).

  • TS1398 my problem is my iphone 4s is connected to the internet(wi-fi) with full signal strength but freezes when browsing and says "Cannot Open Page, Safari could not open page because the server stopped responding".

my problem is my iphone 4s is connected to wi-fi with full signal(3 bars) strength but freezes when browsing and says
    "Cannot Open Page"
"Safari could not open page because the server stopped responding"
I already reset the iphone to its factory settings and erase all contents but still the browsing speed freezes or not searching at all. Sometimes it will work and fast but then the problem uccors every now and then. Iv'e been using iphone 4 for two years and I still have it and works fine compared to this IPHONE 4S.

Settings → scroll down to Safari → in Safari settings, I selected both Clear History and Clear Cookies and Data.
IF that does not work -
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Finally - if problem still present -
    Go to Settings>General>Reset
Reset the network settings - you will need to add the password of your home WiFi in your phone once more
The device should turn itself off & back on then go into Settings>Wifi and join your network

  • Full signal strength but unable to connect to the internet

I just got my ibook G4 about a month ago and have only been able to access the internet for about 2 weeks on and off. After I set up my wireless linksys router I was able to connect right away and it was fine. Then about a week or so after using it when I tried to open safari a message popped up telling me I was not connected to the internet. This lasted for about a week and then one day out of the blue I was able to connect. This lasted about a week and has since gone back to being unable to connect for the past 5 days. I have full airport signal strength and it recognizes linksys in the drop down menu.
I called Apple and was unfortunately disconnected but they advised me to reset the router by disconnecting it and plugging it back in after ten seconds. Still no luck. I even tried connecting through the cable that is normally connected to the desktop, still nothing.
Does anyone have any advice or know what could be wrong??
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Megz, first welcome to the discussions,
Here are the recommended steps to regain your connection.
If you have not changed or fiddled with any of your settings.
1st Check and make sure all of your cables are good and plugged in all the way.
2nd, Shut your computer clear OFF.
3rd, Pull the AC adapter from your Internet Service Providers Modem.
Next Pull the AC adapter from your Router.
You will have to wait a minimum of 5 minutes.
    Next In Order.
Plug back in your Internet Service Providers Modem after your 5 minute wait.
Now you need to wait untill it has regained it's signal from your ISP's server, to your modem, this normally takes a minute or so, or untill you have all the lights (normally 3).
Next you can plug back in your Router and repeat the process of waiting for all the lights again, about a minute.
Now you can turn your computer back on and you should be good.
If not, repeat the process and wait a little longer.
If there is a problem it is normally caused by not waiting untill you have re-aquired the signal form your ISP's Server. Good Luck Don

  • TS3623 I cannot activate my 3rd gn AppleTV due to NetworkTime problems, what is that? I am able to mirror fine. And my network read shows that I am accessing my network, with good signal strength, but the net work time has stopped me cold.

I am able to mirror fine, but that limits me, my wifi extend only to airplay, my ipad, my iphone, but not the store, or netflix Network stats are good, and signal strength excellent, but due to the problem of failing to  set my Network time no activation. I have unplugged and replugged so many times my i need to see a chiropractor. What gives, I have seen this question on the forums but no diffinative answer. HELP!! —Bob

Try a reset or restore if you can get to that.  I found when trying to use a wired ethernet setup (which wouldn't work but that is another story) that I couldn't even get to the menus without the atv3 wanting to connect with apple for the time.  When I went back to wireless, I got the tome sync to let me get to the menus but then an apple rep had me restore or reboot (I forgot which sorry) and then I finally got my wired connection to work.  That is, until tonight and I am having to download the 4 hour update.  Download to what, I don't know.

  • My iPad-2 is getting connected to Wi-Fi(full signal strength),but its not able to access internet.I tried few solutions from this forum, but nothing worked out.I am in India and i am in need of a remedy to it.

    Plz someone help me.

It's rather difficult to give you advice since you do not say what you have tried or anything about your networking equipment but your underlying problem may be that you are not really be properly connected to your WiFi network.
Your router may not have given your iPad a valid IP address. Go to Settings > Wifi > your network name and touch the ">" to the right to see the network details. If the IP address starts with 169 or is blank then your router didn't provide an IP address and you won't be able to access the Internet. Other devices on your network may still have a proper IP address and continue to function.
Sometimes the fix can be as simple as restarting your router (remove power for 30 seconds and restart). Next, reset network settings on your iPad (Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings) and then attempt to connect. In other cases it might be necessary to update the router's firmware with the latest from the manufacturer's support web pages.
If you need more help please give more details on your network, i.e., your router make, model and version, the wifi security being used (WEP, WPA, WPA2), etc.

  • Good Output signal strength but really quiet in headphones.

I have my output set to zero and and its registering as a strong outsput signal. However, I cannot get a good volume out of my headphones. It's really quiet. Any ideas?

    Ah...!
your make and type of headphones is...
...and your audio interface is... and your amplifier is...or your mixer...
    and they are set at...
    cabled to and connected with...
    but...
    wait...!
I can (vaguely) see something! The headphones are plugged into the send output jacks! And the send level is at -∞! That must be it! Or... is that just a memory?

  • Signal strength but no internet via Linksys WAG54G

    Hello there.
I am connected to the internet via a Linksys WAG54G ADSL Gateway. On my PowerMac - ethernet-connected - everything is fine, but on my PowerBook I am getting indications that it has successfully connected (using a WEP key) to the home network, but it won't let me on the network.
    I can't figure out what's wrong.
Nor can I figure out whether the router recognises the PowerBook or not, which leads me to this supplemental question: how do I discover the MAC address of each of my computers?
    Thanks.
    Chris Addison

You can find you MAC address, with Mac OS X, by opening the Network System Preference and going to the setting for the network adapter you want to find it for. For your Airport card it will be your Airport ID (Airport tab). For Ethernet it is Ethernet ID (Ethernet tab).
As for your issue, did you check the wireless access point for MAC address filtering?

  • WiFi signal full - but drops connectivity after 8 to 9 hours - MBP 5,4

While using MBP switched on continuously @ office for 8 to 9 hours, I cannot access internet or any local network resource, while other Linux and Windows machines still can.
But when I turn the Airport off and again on, it can connect. Again after sometime the same problem comes.
Should I remove OSX and install Linux on this?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It would prove whether or not you are suffering some problem with the software on the Mac. It might be some damaged preference or cache file. You could also backup your data twice, and selectively restore data after testing whether or not a simple basic Mac OS X install still has the same problem. If two separate operating systems are erase and installed have issues with the router, the router setup may not have the right setup for three machines. If only one erase and installed system has an issue, then it is perhaps a firmware issue with the router. If no erase and installed system has an issue, monitor what you install after the erase and install to determine if a specific installation triggers the issue.

  • E4200 - signal strength of connection is not good

This is my third router in less than ten months. I am a big Buffalo Tech fan. They make solid routers and sell it for a lot lesser than Cisco. Warranty is better too. Unfortunately, for some strange reason, both Buffelo Tech's routers would turn off the radio after 24-36 hours. I am sure that it had something to do with the Atheros chipsets, which those routers are based on, and some signal conflicts due to a large number of devices in my work area. So, I decided to try Cisco E4200, which is cream of the lot in the home router category.
Things, which I did not like right away:
    1. The physical design: Though pleasing to look at, this impractical design take too much room on the surface. There is no option to mount it on the wall (Which is my preference.)
    2. Installation: In an effort to make it idiot proof, Cisco decided to just include a CD for installation. I am fine with that. I popped the CD, and connected the router through the cable to my laptop. That was not enough, the installation program wanted to configure the router without the wire. It expects, Windows to have networking control. My Lenovo does not have the setup which the installation program expects, so it gave up, and expected me to call Support.
    3. Knowing a thing or two about networking, I decided to configure the router using the Web Interface. The logon screen came up asking me to enter the userid and password. As a reasonable person, you would expect to find this information on the accompanied CD. Guess what there is no user manual on the CD. There is a link for the User Manual on the CD, which tries to take you to Cisco.com. My router was not configured yet, so how do they expect me to go to Cisco.com. This is perhaps the most idiotic action on Cisco's part. Cisco could have included a little sticker with the default user id and password (admin/admin) on the router somewhere.
    4. Performance: It is ok. The signal strength of Wifi connection is not as good as my previous Buffalo Tech routers.
Things I liked in this Router:
    1. Configuration Options
The configuration option (Once you know the userid and password) are just perfect for a SOHO user. Cisco has made a great effort to simplify technical jargons into simple terms. They have eliminated unnecessary complicated settings, which most of us never user, yet leaving behind, enough to satisfy a medium level user like me.
    2. I really like the Guest Mode, which gives your guests a password protected Wifi network, yet keeping them isolated from your own network.
    Things to watch out:
This is a dual band router, which means that it gives you two separate frequencies to operate your Wifi Network.
    A - 5.6 Ghz
    BGN - 2.4 Ghz
Make sure you have separate SSIDs for the two networks. It is a very common mistake people have made.

Yes you are right the SSID for both the networks has to be different.. and apart from that regarding wireless in 5 GHZ you can try channel width as 20MHZ only and wireless channel to 149 or 161.
In 2.4GHZ you can try with channel width as 20MHZ and channel to 6 , 9 or 11 and then observe the wireless connection..
Make sure the firmware should be updated as well.

  • Very weird signal strength problem

Hello everybody, I have a rather unique problem with a linksys range expander. I have successfully set one up at my home and am presently trying to set one up for a friend. I set everything up in every possible way I knew how (I had a lot of experience after trying to set up my own)and I believe the range expander is set up correctly however in Wireless connection status it is still showing the signal as very low. BUT if I click view wireless networks, it shows the network as having excellent signal strength! I know that distance is not an issue as the adapter and range expander in my house is set up at more than twice the distance of my friends and it still receives excellent signal. Thus I'm inclined to think that something else is causing this problem, since I also have tried moving the range expander in case something was blocking it, to no effect. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if anyone has any ideas for a fix? Thanks!

If the Range Extender is showing two blue lights & from the wired computer you are able to ping 192.168.1.240........ we can assume that range extender is working fine ......
Let me know on wireless computer which utility you are using?
